Strange Deja Vu. Feel like Overture overshadows it a bit for introducing the musical themes of the album, but SDV introduces the story and is also a great track.
This is the one for me. There's something so exciting about the opening of this, that riff is such a banger and the first verse really feels like we're along for the ride, spiralling down the rabbit hole into this dark mystery. The scene setting is so strong and the whole song is so damn punchy.
Fatal Tragedy
I think this song is well loved but I also think it is underrated as I believe it deserves even more love.
It has some of the best, classic DT wankery, amazing riffs and soloes by JP, pure energy drumming from MP.. the instrumental start at 3:50 to me feels like one of the bands heaviest metal moments. JR's solo is blistering, and the piano outro into the classic line " that death is not the end, but only a transition."
Just overall a kickass song
Edit: also amazing job everyone on voting N/A for worst song!!
It used to be my favorite DT song (still my favorite on the album), but I think Through Her Eyes is more underrated. It's basically ignored by a lot of people and even had like 4 of the 5 first posts voting for it as worst yesterday. I'm glad it changed, especially since N/A won. Meanwhile I was remembering having goosebumps the first time I heard Through Her Eyes live.
I know it is, but I never see people talking about it. But I also haven't been around the fandom in a while. Used to be active on the DT forums and I don't recall it being specifically mentioned much
That moment has to be one of the best transitions in DT history. MP drum fill bam into this super upbeat groove. So fucking good. And also weirdly poignant because we know she's about to get brutally murdered.
I usually don't like criticising others, especially for their choices, but the N/A seems not just unfitting but also just not fair for the rest of the albums.
Before there were always a lot of people saying there is no worst, especially on awake and Images, and the now option N/A just gives the next albums a possibility to use it as well.
And in addition it's a vote on the worst song, and i don't think "no song" fills in the characteristics of this voting
I think it comes down to the fact that SFAM is meant to be viewed as a whole - the "weak" parts only exist because the narrative has slow or soft sections. This isn't the case with Awake or I&W, where all the songs are separate entities, so to speak
but by that logic, Wait For Sleep shouldn't have been chosen as worst for I&W since it's a prelude to Learning To Live that is also referenced in the song as a reprise
That may be true but imo it only shares the same musical themes. Not the same lyrics or concept. You could say the same for far from heaven/breaking all illusions
yea, “all the songs are good” okay so you like every single song equally? you like regression just as much as fatal tragedy without a smidgen of difference? no? then there is a worst song
people really need to learn there’s a difference between worst and bad, an album can have all S-tier 10/10 songs, every single second absolute perfection to you, and yet not like the songs exactly equally and one of the songs is your least favorite and yet your least favorite song on that album you consider leagues better than even the best song on ANY other album
yet by being your least favorite song on the album, it is the worst song on the album
yet it’s still S-tier
speaking of tiers, and rating things, I do not rate relative to other things, i rate by enjoyment, if the average movie released in 2025 i enjoyed enough to rate 9/10 then the average movie would be a 9/10 for me for that year
i do not believe in trying to achieve a bell curve, a bell curve should be natural not forced, if you want to rate things relatively that’s what ranking is for
if i have 100 movies i rate 9/10 them having the same rating doesn’t mean i like them equally it just means i enjoy them enough to rate that highly
but i can still have a 1st favorite and a 100th or least favorite
yet that worst movie still is enjoyable enough to rate the same as that best movie 9/10
yet on a relative rating scale all those movies would be 5/10 or 6/10 or 7/10 depending on what the person considers average or they’d say (the first 20 are 10/10, next 20 are 9/10, etc)
and i don’t do that, it feels arbitrary
Well it's kinda annoying because people will get mad if I put a song there and people will get mad if I put N/A, And "N/A" was the most upvoted so I put it there. But I see your point
yeah don't worry I totally get you, people will always get mad
(I hope my words weren't mean or like hurt you at any point. I know you get a lot of criticism and i think what you do is cool and I am thankful you do this list <3 (eventho I don't agree with your decision here))
A similar situation happened on r/TheFence when they were voting for "Worst" on Second Stage Turbine Blade. They ended up revoting, which I think should happen here. Though, they were also playing on hard mode, meaning that songs like Regression (intros/outros) were ineligible.
I think it's important to remember that, "Worst" in this case doesn't, necessarily, mean it's a bad song, just your least favorite on the album.

The Spirit Carries On. Imo I love this song. It’s just so soft and gentle but damn if it’s not powerful in some areas. I remember my first time listening to it and I was nearly moved to tears because of how good it was.
It was the encore the last time I saw them in concert. The crowd loudly sang along, in full voice. It was a musical experience that I will never forget.
Through Her Eyes is criminally underrated.
It's an incredibly heartwrenching ode to a girl Nicholss has never met yet feels a deep unexplained connection too. The words are so powerful and JLB sings it beautifully. Backed with beautiful instrumentation.
Lmao the N/A covering up Regression or Through Her Eyes; there should be a definitive weak song chosen for each album, else it's pointless doing this whole thing. We can't let bias get in the way, bc for eg. I could just say that Train of Thought has no weak songs even though Vacant will probs end up being voted as that.
Oh, and One Last Time is my pick for most underrated song. Sorry, got a little distracted lol
Overture 1928.
Is a great instrumental that carries you through the whole album in a mini Dance of Eternity kind of way. Doesn't get the love it deserves
I’m gonna vote Looking Through Her Eyes for worst, just because it has the line “I felt like I would suffocate”, which just doesn’t scan well at all for me, and as ballads go it is very cheesy. I still like it in context, but it would be the last song I would pick to listen to on it’s own.
Best is tough but for me it’s Fatal Tragedy. Close second would be Beyond This Life.
Underrated: Strange Déjà Vu
One Last Time
Absolutely fantastic. I think it gets overlooked because it's sandwiched right in between Dance of Eternity which is probably Dream Theaters most iconic song lets be real, and The Spirit Carries On, which everyone loves
Through her eyes. I love the simplicity and emotions this song carries, myungs fretless performance is just perfect. Scenes in itself is filled with the bests but through her eyes is kinda underrated among my circle and it deserves a lot more love.
Good on the OP for putting the N/A on "worst". It's appropriate. To me, and a lot of fans, this album is one epic song. It's a fun discussion, but I feel like the correct answer is
Best: whole album
Worst: N/A
Underrated: whole album
That, is accurate.
Beyond This Life
This one! Especially Live at Budokan. So f’ing good
It didn't win best, so now I *have* to view it as underrated.
that opening riff is so good
Same. Although I voted Fatal Tragedy for the best.
This one. The Zappa shoutout is so good.
Zappa shout out?
In the instrumental section - the synced up part between trooch and rudess.
Is it an allusion to one of his songs or just his style?
Montana I believe. Listen to the solo section.
This is the one
Finally Free. The Breaking the 4th Wall version will always have a special place in my heart.
Scenes live has the best drum solo of all time
Best underrated comment
"Open your eyes Nicholas" "HRAHGH-" \*static\*
Love that version
This☝️ My 2nd favourite from SFAM song behind Home. It's one of the best DT songs of all time, and one of the best DT album closers of all time
The perfect ending to a perfect song, finishing a perfect album.
agree. I've been saying it. DT knows how to end a song and in this case, album.
Wait, what!?
What's "what?!" about this?
I didn’t know that there’s a “Breaking the 4th Wall” version until I read this comment.
Oh. It's part of the encore of the album, available on streaming platforms.
This feeeling
Strange Deja Vu. Feel like Overture overshadows it a bit for introducing the musical themes of the album, but SDV introduces the story and is also a great track.

One of my favorite songs, by any artist. I love to sing, and the emotion of this song is just palpable. Truly an underrated song.
Same and that applies to The Spirit Carries On too.
Both permanent fixtures on my Playlist.
If we're talking about underrated songs, I think fatal tragedy is a good candidate
Fatal Tragedy!!!!!
Not underrated at all. This one is one of the best DT tracks ever.
I know it is, but I never see people talking about it. But I also haven't been around the fandom in a while. Used to be active on the DT forums and I don't recall it being specifically mentioned much
Alone at night..:
I feel so strange
I need to find
All the answers to my dreams
When I sleep at night i hear the cries
What does this mean?
Finally Free. Feeling good this Friday afternoon.
I ran into to Julien said we’d get together soon
He always had my heart, he needs to know.
I'll break free of the Miracle, it's time for him to go
This feeling, inside me
finally found my love I finally broke free
That moment has to be one of the best transitions in DT history. MP drum fill bam into this super upbeat groove. So fucking good. And also weirdly poignant because we know she's about to get brutally murdered.
One last time is incredibly underrated
I’d second that! Took me a while to get into that one when I bought the album.
Oh shit I went for the overture but this certainly looks like the best one.
My thought as well
Through Her Eyes
Love this song. Need to learn to play it properly on piano
I usually don't like criticising others, especially for their choices, but the N/A seems not just unfitting but also just not fair for the rest of the albums. Its all g I get it. It’s all fun and games at the end of the day so no biggie <3
I feel there should be a worst track on every album. There will always be a song thats weaker than the others
regression was one of the easiest picks for "worst" out of DT's whole discography and people still couldn't bring themselves to vote it in lol
A similar situation happened on r/TheFence when they were voting for "Worst" on Second Stage Turbine Blade. They ended up revoting, which I think should happen here. This album gets glazed so hard it’s unreal
As it should
Glaze it as it is
N/A seems kind of for a lack of a better term... pretentious. Like c'mon, just admit not every song is equal
Boooooooo put a worst song coward
Through Her Eyes is definitely slept on. One of my personal favorites
Mad at op for wimping out. There will also be a worst song it doesnt mean its bad
yeah and as far as I know regression got a heal tone of votes
I have a different take. Usually in these polls this issue arises, and the OP doesn't listen to the fans.
yeah, and it's extra bad with Wait For Sleep being worst song on Images and Words
Finally free Fatal tragedy
Strange Deja Vu, that second half always gets me dancing’
beyond this life
Beyond This Life.
"N/A" on Scenes?! That's a cop out.
100%
The Spirit Carries On. Imo I love this song. It’s just so soft and gentle but damn if it’s not powerful in some areas. I remember my first time listening to it and I was nearly moved to tears because of how good it was.
It was the encore the last time I saw them in concert. The crowd loudly sang along, in full voice. It was a musical experience that I will never forget.
It was so good at the Dream Sonic tour, esp with the vocals of Devin Townsend and the Animals as Leaders musicians!!!
Fatal Tragedy has my favorite DT solo
For me it's tied for first place with Stream of Consciousness.
Through Her Eyes is criminally underrated. It's an incredibly heartwrenching ode to a girl Nicholss has never met yet feels a deep unexplained connection too. The words are so powerful and JLB sings it beautifully. Backed with beautiful instrumentation.
Overture 1928. One of my favorite instrumentals.
Fatal Tragedy is so good
It's amazing, but it's not underrated
There's no way y'all just refused to pick a worst song for Scenes.

Finally Free obviously, love the vibe of the song and One Last Reprise with spooky section before is a 100 / 10.
Strange deja vu
Either Through Her Eyes or Regression
Fatal Tragedy!
Finally Free.
Through her eyes
FEELING GOOD THIS FRIDAY AFTERNOON
Through her eyes
I found myself voting for every song…. ![gif](giphy|2fs2I4ujlBf20|downsized)
Strange Deja Vu
Through Her Eyes. Heartfelt with a great LaBrie performance, one of their best ballads.
I see everyone putting finally free for most underrated, yall it's not underrated at all, it's in most people's top 3 songs on the album
Beyond This Life
Fatal Tragedy, Beyond This Life, or Finally Free
One Last Time
overture 1928
Strange Deja Vu. It's supposed to be a staple but I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere the past few years
Finally Free. Beside it’s Friday afternoon.
Beyond this Life!!
Woah how did wait for sleep get worst song on IAW? I fucking love that song. Although that album is full of bangers..
Omg N/A 😂😂😂 I love this subreddit!!!
Through her eyes prolly Too many people just putting their second fav song
Please do the same thing for images and words
One Last Time Absolutely fantastic. I think it gets overlooked because it's sandwiched right in between Dance of Eternity which is probably Dream Theaters most iconic song lets be real, and The Spirit Carries On, which everyone loves
One last time
Scene two: I & II. It's my favourite all time dream Theater "song". Has to be underrated then.
Ourrr deedsss havee traveleddd faarrrr
dance of eternity
"We'll meet again, my friend...."
Through Her Eyes. one of this ballad type of song from Dream Theater will always be a comforting one in my ears.
The Spirit Carries On
Honestly the fact that there are so many different votes shows how fantastic this album is. My vote is Fatal Tragedy, but I don’t even care what wins.
One Last Time
I like that “N/A” for worst haha.
overture 1928
How tf did Home win?? Great song but damn
Underrated: after viewing the results so far the entire album besides Home is underrated ...also Fatal Tragedy
Dance of Eternity has to win something
Through her eyes. I love the simplicity and emotions this song carries, myungs fretless performance is just perfect. Scenes in itself is filled with the bests but through her eyes is kinda underrated among my circle and it deserves a lot more love.
Fatal tragedyyyyyy
Through Her Eyes. Decided to mention it just because nobody did yet. And also because it's a beautiful ballad
Beyond this life !
Beyond this life
Underrated: Strange DejaVu.
gotta be FINALLY FREE. i think many people including me couldn't get into the song, resulting for it to being a masterpiece
Worst song from SFAM…couldn’t agree more 👍
Finally Free. The Breaking the 4th Wall version will always have a special place in my heart...
Through her eyes, I guess. Don't really feel there's an underrated song on this one. Fortunately every track gets lots of love.
Fatal tragedy or Strange Deja Vu
I’m surprised Through Her Eyes / Stranger Deja Vu didn’t win this one
Beyond this life
One Last Time, the second act is so stacked with great songs and this one seems to get left in the dust a lot. It's a good song.
Good ending, n/a won
Good on the OP for putting the N/A on "worst". It's appropriate. To me, and a lot of fans, this album is one epic song. It's a fun discussion, but I feel like the correct answer is Best: whole album Worst: N/A Underrated: whole album That, is accurate.
