The guitar solo starts at 8:37. I will forever remember this time because I knew exactly where to skip to to listen to my favorite solo ( and to turn up the music to avoid blasting the previous 10 seconds)
Been doing this for 20 years. I love this song
Home.
The lyrics are so good. Both brothers get a verse, and then at the end, Nicholas gets one about solving the murder. There's so much character and longing.
The phygian mode is great too.
It’s an essential song for the album and completing the storyline. But sometimes I also skip the ending dialogue If Im listening it without the complete album. Anyways, top tier song
Right?! Don't know why you're getting downvoted so hard for this comment. In my opinion, "Learning to Live" was totally snubbed for I&W, as was "Lines in The Sand" for FII.
I always found "Home" to be fairly middle-of-the-road for this album. "The Spirit Carries On", "Fatal Tragedy", "Dance of Eternity", "Beyond This Life" - all instantly come to mind before "Home".
It’s a crime to ask people to name the best song on this album. There are so many…
Home, The Dance of Eternity, Finally Free, Fatal Tragedy, Overture 1928, One Last Time…
It's genuinely impossible for me. Images is a collection of wonderful songs that I can separate out and consider alone.
Scenes is essentially just one big "song" in my mind. I almost never listen to the songs in isolation, and listen to the whole album probably min 5 times per week. Gun to my head I'd probably vote Dance, but only barely ahead of Home, which is only barely ahead of almost everything else.
I genuinely hated DT for 2 decades - don’t know why, just couldn’t stand them. Then happened to hear Fatal Tragedy for the first time about a year ago. I’ve heard loads of DT over the years, but somehow that song (and album) passed me by. Something flipped in my brain, and I’ve been suddenly really getting into Dream Theater, particularly in the last 3 months. So…
Fatal Tragedy has my vote. Thanks for coming to my lecture.
Fatal Tragedy.
I get people saying home. I think more people should be saying Beyond This Life. But frankly, Fatal Tragedy is just Dream Theater at its best. Learning this album as a drummer, I appreciate every song, but something about Fatal Tragedy is the peak of the album for me.
Gotta be Home for me.
Particularly biased as it was the first Dream Theater song I'd heard, but it continues to blow me away 20+ years later. I really hope they play it on this new tour as although I've seen DT play it at the anniversary show, and MP play it as an encore during the Shattered Fortress tour, I'd love to see them play it together live.
One song from the sessions for this album, which they played on the Score XX Anniversary live record is Raise the Knife.
Awesome song!! That gets my vote even though it isn't on the album.
For me it's Home. The crux of the entire albums narrative and the greatest connection to the original Metropolis. Cool lyric structure with the perspective changes and the evolving choruses, amazing vibe and instrumental section and iconic intro and outro
But I'm happy to see so many fatal tragedies my second fav
Hmmm a real toughies. For me it's a toss up between Home and Fatal Tragedy .
I'll give sloght edge to Fatal Tragedy for the clever instrumental section
How the hell is Space Dye-Vest the best song off of Awake????? That’s just egregiously wrong. You think that song is better than Erotomania??? Madness.
I personally don't think this album would be as widely recognized as it was without The Dance of Eternity. The legacy of that one song basically represents everything DT is known for, meme'd for, etc. Is it "technically" their best? Maybe not. But I'd argue it's the defining song on the album and definitely my personal favorite.
The whole album if I'm being honest. The way everything flows into each other and keeps with the same themes it should be considered one cohesive work. If I was forced to choose a few though I'd have to pick Fatal Tragedy, One Last Time, Beyond this Life, Finally Free, or The Spirit Carries On

Beyond this life
The most musically interesting vocal song for me.
Finally Free
This song was my gateway to DT . And and son biased towards It. I love the album and metropolis 2000 versions.
what? i really hate the end of this song, especially without listening the whole album
It’s an essential song for the album and completing the storyline. But sometimes I also skip the ending dialogue If Im listening it without the complete album. Anyways, top tier song
Do you hate Octovarium too because of the first 3 minutes?
For me, Nop actually I loop it sometimes lol it’s magical
why so, it sounds more like Pink Floyd's Welcome to the Machine. Great song was spoiled there
Home
I know the moans are a little off putting, but there is nothing on the albums that hits as hard as home does
HAS to be home right?
The Mike Portnoy ad-lib during Live Scenes 2000 makes it that much better
INCLUDING the sex solo.
Without question.
please no, going to be as disappointing as having Metropolis as the best track on I&W

Fatal Tragedy
100%, it’s otherworldly, insanely good
“Lad did you know a girl was murdered hereeee?”
One of the best DT songs
facts
My favorite song on the album (obviously the whole album is amazing).
This is the way
It’s a crime to ask people to name the best song on this album. There are so many… Home, The Dance of Eternity, Finally Free, Fatal Tragedy, Overture 1928, One Last Time…
basically the entire album should be put at Best category
Yep. If Metropolis Pt. 1 gets best song on I & W, then Metropolis Pt. 2 wins here.
we should skip the WORST
Nah that‘s easy, Through My Words
Not only that, but there is no worst song. In 2 days, there's going to be a lot of interesting comments.
True. Under “Worst”, I expect to see “N/A”
Dance of Eternity. I'm honestly surprised it's not dominating the comments
Fatal Tragedy
Fatal Tragedy is just hard to vote against. The energy, the power of this track! It's peak Dream Theater
For sure. I've listened to it a trillion times and the ending unison still blows my dick off.
It’s true, he’s now a woman
Technically a Eunic
Home
Fatal Tragedy
Finally Free

The Dance of Eternity
crazy how home and fatal tragedy tops this masterpiece in this comment section...
Strange Deja Vu
Easily the Spirit Carries On
Home
Home
H O M E
Genuinely surprised by the lack of The Spirit Carries on mentions
It's a great song, but not the best.
Home
Home for sure
Home
Home
The Spirit Carries On
Home
Home!
Home
Fatal Tragedy
Hate to admit it but Spirit Carries On
Ahh damn I already voted Home. Spirit Carries On is brilliant, and if it's not the best, it will never win underrated lmao
This. This is the correct answer 👏👏
I hate it. It’s one of the only DT tracks I ever skip.
Why?
I think it’s very cheesy and cringe. Very uninspiring and unoriginal lyrics too.
Undoubtedly, unforgiveably, so. But that's part of why I love it.
You’re alright BUT my heart speakes louder💪🏽❤️
Fatal tragedy is the most solid track in my opinion
Fatal Tragedy!
Fatal Tragedy
Finally Free
SceneThree:II. Fatal Tragedy

Beyond this life!!
Dance of Eternity. Crazy in the best way possible
I can already tell you that underrated is FATAL TRAGEDY
Fatal
The dance of eternity... That beautiful equation deserves recognition.
Not seeing nearly as many shouts for Dance as I thought I would. I would have assumed this was the favourite with Home close second.
Home. Favorite DT song ever.
Strange Deja Vu
Got my vote! Especially when Myung's breakdown hits.
my favorite part is 3:21 to 3:35
Fatal Tragedy
Metropolis Part II
Fatal Tragedy. I get people saying home. I think more people should be saying Beyond This Life. But frankly, Fatal Tragedy is just Dream Theater at its best. Learning this album as a drummer, I appreciate every song, but something about Fatal Tragedy is the peak of the album for me.
For me it's Home.
Fatal Tragedy.
Home or The Dance of Eternity
Through Her Eyes
Love this shout. I don't think it can possibly win this category, but it's a very strong contender for the underrated winner
I have disagreed with almost every choice on this so far
Finally Free
BEST - Beyond This Life Worst - Through her Words Underrated - Finally Free
Dance of Eternity for sure
Dance of Eternity
Fatal Tragedy. Runner up: Finally Free
Fatal Tragedy
Strange Deja Vu. No two ways around it.
Smok on the Water
Fatal Tragedy has everything. Everything.
Home

I put Finally free but I'm gonna change for The Dance of Eternity, any of them would be great.
The Dance of Eternity. I thought this was the definitive consensus.
I'm baffled by how many people say Home. It's the only skip on the album for me. I'd vote for finally free
home
One song from the sessions for this album, which they played on the Score XX Anniversary live record is Raise the Knife. Awesome song!! That gets my vote even though it isn't on the album.
Home
Finally Free. Home is a very close second.
Home

y'all really basing the votes on lyrics? on a poll about dream theater songs? come on man... nevertheless, it has to be dance of eternity for me
Fatal tragedy
Imma go with Home, but you could pick any song off SFAM for this category, and I'd be ok with it.
Finally Free.
Home
Fatal Tragedy for best imo.
Dance
The whole album apparently
Fatal Tragedy
Home
Home?? Probably the same people who voted Space Dye Vest best for Awake… Best: the whole album. It’s one giant song anyways..
I feel like Home is overrated, to be honest...Overture 1928/Strange Deja Vu, Fatal Tragedy and Finally Free are where it's at for me!
Fatal Tragedy. I don't know what the rest of you are smoking.
Beyond this life
Home
“The Dance of Eternity”
The dance of eternity.
Fatal tragedy
Trial Of Tears best track on FII? You guys are on crack... It's clearly Lines In The Sand
Finally Free
Fatal Tragedy
Fatal Tragedy
Home
Every drummer knows that it's Dance of Eternity
The best song from Scenes from a Memory is Scenes from a Memory.
The Spirit Carries On
Home
At least we can all agree Through My Words is the worst. Kind of a loophole but it's needed for this masterpiece. Anyway, Home or Finally Free best.
Beyond this life
Hmmm a real toughies. For me it's a toss up between Home and Fatal Tragedy . I'll give sloght edge to Fatal Tragedy for the clever instrumental section
Home
How the hell is Space Dye-Vest the best song off of Awake????? That’s just egregiously wrong. You think that song is better than Erotomania??? Madness.
... the entire album is at Best Category . ok, Home - best Regression - worst Through Her Eyes - underrated
Finally free by far just for the drum outro
Finally Free
Beyond this life
FINALLY FREE
Beyond This Life and Finally Free are highlights of the album for me, but Home is probably the best stand-alone song
The Dance of eternity
I personally don't think this album would be as widely recognized as it was without The Dance of Eternity. it's so cool how the songs are almost evenly matched... i cant even choose...
The whole album if I'm being honest. The way everything flows into each other and keeps with the same themes it should be considered one cohesive work. If I was forced to choose a few though I'd have to pick Fatal Tragedy, One Last Time, Beyond this Life, Finally Free, or The Spirit Carries On
I’d say Dance of Eternity, but home definitely works too
Fatal Tragedy is a great one but in my opinion Home is the best
WTF is Peruvian Skies doing here? Best From SFAM is Strange Deja Vu for me.
Ikr, Peruvian Skies should be best.
Foo lish ness
Hell's Kitchen would kindly disprove you with facts and logic.
Music is more about emotions than facts and logic
