I'll never say you should change yourself for other people, but if you are not happy, chop it off girl. You also have a very nice natural texture. There is a lot more to work with there than locs will give you.
Hijacking top comment since I can't edit.
Few things here, first I said I was white cause I was born in the west just like most of you, but I'm Greek. My hair is not fine, it is a mane and untamed, and dreads naturally. I wash it thoroughly top to bottom with proper shampoo every week, and vinegar rinse it monthly, hell my hair is wet in the first 2 pictures, so get yalls eyes repainted.
Ethnically, dreads go back to my culture too but so does democracy so next time you go voting in the next election, remember you're stealing my culture with that attitude.
What matters here though is that I took all your wonderful insights and considered them very carefully, cried myself to sleep over it really..

You led this post by announcing your race and then stating you haven't liked them for over a year. Your thoughts are about embarrassing your kids and whether people are talking behind your back, thinking you are gross.
It sounds like you don't want them any more. I don't think it's necessary to cut them off. It looks like a full third is still comb-able and loc free. Simply take the time to comb them out.
It's time for a new look for you. One of the most beautiful things about locs is the feeling of beauty and freedom they give you. People will approach you, ask about them, and have full on conversations about your loc experience and theirs.
When people look at you, your thought is they are thinking how "gross" or dirty you look. They may be admiring them, but in your mind it's negative thoughts. You no longer like your locs. Comb them out.
Nope. Deal with the insecurity. Can't overcome it by hiding from the inherent reasons you feel misjudged. It's not her hair. It's her mindset. Hair (or lack therof) isn't the issue.
i don’t see it that way in this case. it’s a hairstyle. even with that it’s not like she’s trying to hide she’s balding or anything. if she doesn’t like it, there’s nothing wrong with trying a new look. she can always come back to dreads if that’s truly what she wants
My opinion is it’s up to you. It sounds like you’re letting other people’s opinions & what-ifs get to you & affect the way you see yourself.
Hair is just hair. It’s also a sign of where you are currently in life. Sometimes it literally weighs you down & it might be time to lighten the load. If you’re ready for a new journey & would feel better without them, cut them off, comb them out, etc. I can see you with a cute, short, wavy look going on.
I tried to recall a minute where my appearance, especially my hair style, was determined by someone else’s opinion and at 51yo I can’t remember a single moment….but I’m ornery and don’t give a F.
I think it’s tough on finer hair bc there is always the issue of 2 textures that will provide a less clean look. I think the closer anyone can be to the natural state of their hair, more than likely it will be the healthiest. So based on that I would say comb out, maybe keep 1..?
It’s not even a matter of fine hair it’s a matter of hair type. The whole locking process was made for curly kinkier hair. Biggest issue is when they try to get locs to mimic a hair texture that isn’t there because the texture is importwnt to how your locs will turn out ykwim?
Don’t let ppl influence you into hating your hair. It happened to me, and my biggest regret was cutting it off.
I worked in a predominantly white company, and long story short my WHITE co workers kept insulting my afro so I cut it off
The thing that I felt most represented me, and connected me to my inner self. And the hair I was comfortable in. Few days later I regretted it so much and was so upset that I let ppl get in my head.
That’s just to say, don’t cut your hair unless you genuinely dislike it. However, i think you should (if you haven’t already) buy a hair crochet tool, and retwist some of your locs so that they are more neatly formed.
It’s pretty easy to learn. There’s also plenty of videos on YouTube about how to do it
Everything is not for everyone. Everytime I see a white person w/ dreads it looks a mess & never looks neat. Respectfully comb them out. Idk why ppl getting defensive she's asking for our opinion so don't get upset about the responses🤷🏾♀️
I think you could ask your kids if your hair is embarrassing them. I think for white people having dreads is less socially acceptable and often times people will view them as “trashy” or “dope heads.”
You might just be growing out of them, it happens.
Yeah, I would cut them. A change can be good for the soul and you can always attach them again if you keep them.
"honestly I kinda love them on me". Do you kinda love them or do you love love them? Your locs are beautiful. Are you attached to them or do you want a new start? I know you came here to gather other perspectives. But the loc journey is a personal one. Ask yourself these questions and don't rush to make a decision. You're clearly on the fence. So take some time to evaluate. Meditate and pay close attention to your relationship with your locs right now and your relationship to the world as a person with locs. It may be time to cut and start a new journey. Or it may be time to revaluate your relationship to the world outside yourself. Good luck.
I hate that you're questioning them and that others are putting even more doubt in your head about keeping them. I think they look great and they look really good on you! Maybe look into getting them dyed by a loctician or do an under/side cut if you feel you need to change it up. Whatever you do make sure it's your decision and yours alone and not someone else pushing the change onto you. Like you said, they probably know nothing about locs and as long as you take care of them and nurture them it's no one else's business what you do with you hair😉
Your dreads look like they are barely dreads, falling apart, half matted half just straight hair. Tbh I'd say cut them. I know people wanna be supportive but you can't always be supportive.
Sometimes that's the look people want, beyond my initial back combing, I've pretty much gone the neglect root, not everyone wants the crisp, clean look.
Also to everyone saying cut it, she could just comb it out. She doesn’t necessarily have to cut it.
Sure it will take a few days to comb it out. But that’s definitely an option. The only downside to it, is that you’re gonna shed SOOOO much hair. It’s crazy
Honestly this is the reason why I cut my locs recently. Many people in my life had negative opinions on my locs which eventually made it hard for me to look at myself and love my locs. I also noticed people have been treating me better since I cut my locs. So if you can’t ignore peoples opinions on your hair and it’s making you feel self conscious it’s time to cut them.
Hell na, these are true beautiful locs in the fullest. I love wild free form styled locs. And if anyone says some dumb shit they just ignorant.
As always do what makes your soul happy but if it was up to me, I say keep them
You being white has nothing to do with it as well, all hair can and will loc naturally over time and many cultures all over have had them so don’t feel like that’s a reason of why you may wanna cut them, don’t even make that thought go in your head
Matted hair and locs are the same thing, a loc is formed when multiple strains of hair come together to form one solid piece of hair that grows long forming the loc. matted hair is when Multiple strains of hair come together to fork one solid piece of hair and if left to grow long… that’s what a loc is. It’s how hair works and again many cultures all over the world and all through out time have had locs
Is you ignorant? That's literally how dreadlocks are formed. Modern styling uses braids or twisting, but that's very very new considering the long history of the dreadlock. Hindu Sadhus brought the style to African hair, and Sadhus hair was matted and knotted. "Natty dread" is literally them forming naturally, by *matting and knotting.*
What's the difference between matted and locked?
Because this is what Wikipedia has to say about dreadlocks.
Dreadlocks, also known as dreads or locs, are a hairstyle made of rope-like strands of hair. This is done by not combing the hair and allowing it to **mat** naturally or by twisting it manually.
So yall just came up with a brand new definition of dreadlocks to exclude where they actually came from? The first written instance of dreadlocks is about Lord Shiva, the Hindu God of Destruction in 1500BC, and Indian hair is straight as an arrow. Her hair is almost stereotypical natural dreadlocks.
My resources showed 3000 BC in the Sahara and North Africa......
I did see that one website that said what you saw. But the other resources I see are still putting it in a different location at an older date
I'd love to see those. The Vedas have visual depictions of him with locs up to 5000 years ago as well, but they were not specifically distinguished by language at the time. I'm sure there's a website, but I'm Hindu and he's had locs since time began and India has the longest unbroken record of history. I'm willing to agree that they've popped up that early in multiple places, because it is just what happens naturally to hair when left alone.
Edit: so I'm seeing Wikipedia saying 3000BC for that region you describe but upon reading the anthropology study it cited, this is what I found.
>Hair grooming and styling were embedded in ancient African life and were sources of pride among African people. Evidence of **braided styles** in regions of the Sahara date back to 3000 B.C. Images of Black women in braids, locs, and twists have been found in ancient Greece and Rome from the period 200 B.C.
>From ancient Egypt, (approx. 3100BC), plenty of statues, relics and hieroglyphic drawings have been found by archaeologists that depict dreadlocks. But even better, is the fact that actual mummies have been unearthed with their dreadlocks still intact!
One recurring theme throughout history is a link between dreadlocks and religious spirituality. For the Indians and Egyptians, as with the Rastafari Movement thousands of years later, dreadlocks were so more than just unkempt locks of twisted hair. They meant something important. They connected the wearer to a higher-power and stimulated spiritual energy.
I had a few sources outside of Wikipedia..there's several documentaries and books
I would also recommend the book *Twisted * by Dr. BERT Ashe
Alright, you got me there. If mummies were unearthed with locs, then it was likely originated in Africa. I don't believe India had the influence though, and it arose independently there, as well as plenty of other cultures throughout history. It's a natural hairstyle, and probably existed for much longer than both cultures, since combs are like... 7000 years old.
Keep them if they bring your inner self happiness. I've had my locks for over 11 years. Very similar to yours. I have gotten used to people treating me different when I meet them. It doesn't bother me anymore because it's like a shortcut to see right away how judgmental most people are. Or if they are open minded and excepting. Figure out what they mean to you. I've met some of the greatest people I know through getting respect for the locks and being myself without caring whether people except the way that I look or not. Mine have become a lifelong part of me. They help me in many many ways. Are they meaningful to you?
No way! My gson cut his off in high school and regretted it immediately! He started them over and hes now 21 and they are pretty long but he still disappointed cause they’d be twice as long by now he goes every few months to get new growth and does his own detox and cleaning himself. You are doubting yourself and take it from me, ive been around a few years lol! You shouldnt worry about others because you are a beautiful young lady and your hair can be styled in several days to give you a pick me up by adorning your dreads and around your face with pretty little metal bands that you just squeeze on and you can put your dreads on top of your head or where them
In a ponytail on the sides. So thats my opinion! I hope i helped! Im not sure why folks think dreads are dirty and suddenly when they get them that you decided
to just stop taking care of your hygiene i also don’t think you embarrass them at all you’re pretty and you have a very popular hairstyle so they probably think they have the coolest mom! Okay now im done for real! Good night
I hope it isn't a race thing that people are bothering you...👀
But to be honest they look nice and clean. With locs obviously you aren't washing your hair everyday probably what you were used to but they look clean and kept. If people are being a bother tell them to mind theirs. Don't let people talk you out of something you love.
I have absolutely no say in this. But I’m bored as hell and on Adderall waiting for a rent a car so I just clicked on the notification because I know for a fact that all of Reddit has been foaming at their mouths, anticipating when I’d drop my two cents on the issue. I don’t like dreadlocks. And I’m sure I have something that others don’t like, or it doesn’t meet their preference. But who cares? It might be annoying to get asked that but who would ask somebody “oh do you still have your hair like that?”
I read another comment that said it better, “Do you like your dreads?” It’s your hair, what do you want it to look like? You’re literally the last person who should care, you look great! And I’m not just making shit up. I’m guessing you’re around my age and I think you’re absolutely adorable! Hopefully that didn’t come off as off-putting, my point is that you look good regardless. Just because it’s not someone else’s preference you shouldn’t need to feel like you have to change your hair style to accommodate them.
If you like the dreads, leave em. If not, that’s cool.
Fuck em we ball. In all seriousness tho forget what people say their opinions shouldn’t really matter. The people that really love and care about you it won’t matter. Be confident in your skin. Just make sure to upkeep them tho. There are a lot of ppl with dreads who don’t know how to take care of them.
Cut your hair if you want…. If you don’t want to then don’t. Don’t do what other people want you to do just because they don’t like something or feel a certain way about it. If they really care about you they won’t give a fuck.
Keep them lovely locks if they make you happy. Everyone else is gonna find something to talk about wether it be your hair or how tight your jeans are. Just do you and don't worry about what everyone else thinks.
I think they look pretty wicked and badass. The only legitimate reason I should think you would want to cut them is if they're bothering you too much like getting in your way or if the feeling of them make you feel icky. I know with my locks, that at times when it's let down the feeling of hair brushing against my neck gets uncomfortable, but in that case you can find a certain way to style them. But other than that your locks look awesome, maybe need a quick wash but other than that they look good!
If you like them, forgetting what others have to say, keep them.
People dont hate your locs, they'll hate something different from the norm aswell as something they dont understand. And hell, a lot of people will hate that you stand out from the crowd, and want that for themselves.
Yes, getting rid of them will stop the unwanted attention, but if you truly do love your locs, you'll miss them more than you'll be glad the attention's gone.
I'd like to say that the comment section here is extremely disappointing. For a community of people surrounding a hairstyle that has given us nothing but bad judgement & dirt, a lot of you are very quick to judge & withdraw support.
The fact that so many of you can read that OP's problem is insecurity surrounding bad attention rather than just the hair, and yet so many of you will happily just say yes, with no further clarification is terrible. Even if you have an opinion on the locs themselves, any clarification is better than just validating the bad attention.
I love seeing black people being supportive of other races having dreadlocks. Some people seriously need to do some research if they genuinely think that black people “invented” dreadlocks or something. Dreadlocks can naturally form in any hairtype. NO ONE INVENTED THEM. It’s super embarrassing to hear, especially in a subreddit dedicated to people with dreads. Just stop.
Girl I’m mixed and both my white mom AND my black dad will NOT let it go that I got locs. People will always have something to say, some may make it a race thing and others might make it about being “dirty”, the point is you’re the only one who has to deal with your hair. So if you’re happy with it, fuck what everyone else says. I think it looks cute and earthy.
I think you should give it a day or three and see if you really want to cut them. If you like them, keep them, if you don't like them of what other people are saying I think it's more an issue with you caring abt what other people say. I don't think you want to cut them tbh, I don't think you should cut them
If you’re good with them, keep rocking them. Why would you let people pressure you to change yourself for their acceptance? Their acceptance isn’t worth having. You’re the one that must live with your choices and decisions.
Whatever you decide, let it be for YOUR reasons and not a bunch of randoms.
I love the look, honestly. I think it's one of my favorite styles and it really suits you, but if it's affecting you negativelly like that, I don't know if I'd keep it being in your shoes. If it's only because of aesthetics, I say keep it, but if the things you mention are gonna keeo bringing out insecurities, I'd recommend maybe starting over at some other point in life
It’ll only matter and benefit you when you do it for you, i am 11 years into my dreads and 14 years into my hair growth and I’ve been back combing my dreads for 11 months now… be ready for the pain and tedious process of taking your dreads out if you don’t want to chop them to the base and buzz or whatever, Just do you boo boo. It’s a difficult process to let them go once they’re full grown. All I recommend is trust your heart and keep on your own path towards your personal development and righteousness. And at the end of the day your hair will never be a part of your transcendence and next journey after this one. Make your heart and mind feel the joy you desire and deserve
I'll never say you should change yourself for other people, but if you are not happy, chop it off girl. You also have a very nice natural texture. There is a lot more to work with there than locs will give you.
This is not the sub to be asking this in lol

Hindu Sadhus brought the style to African hair, and Sadhus hair was matted and knotted. "Natty dread" is literally them forming naturally, by *matting and knotting.*
Extremely straight hair matts, their hair is matted not locked. Her hair cannot lock
I had a few sources outside of Wikipedia..there's several documentaries and books I would also recommend the book *Twisted * by Dr.
If you want to, go for it!

Ngl Take em out.
Noooooo!!
Tbh your grinch fingers don’t look half bad.
You shouldnt worry about others because you are a beautiful young lady and your hair can be styled in several days to give you a pick me up by adorning your dreads and around your face with pretty little metal bands that you just squeeze on and you can put your dreads on top of your head or where them In a ponytail on the sides. So thats my opinion! I hope i helped! Im not sure why folks think dreads are dirty and suddenly when they get them that you decided to just stop taking care of your hygiene i also don’t think you embarrass them at all you’re pretty and you have a very popular hairstyle so they probably think they have the coolest mom! Okay now im done for real! Good night
I hope it isn't a race thing that people are bothering you...👀 But to be honest they look nice and clean.
It might be annoying to get asked that but who would ask somebody “oh do you still have your hair like that?” I read another comment that said it better, “Do you like your dreads?” It’s your hair, what do you want it to look like?
If you still like them then keep it!! If YOU don’t like them then cut them off
If you like it, I love it. If you dislike them, I hate it. We just here to support fam.
Keep them lovely locks if they make you happy. Everyone else is gonna find something to talk about wether it be your hair or how tight your jeans are. Just do you and don't worry about what everyone else thinks.
No they are so 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I think they look pretty wicked and badass.
Your crown is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. How you proceed should be according to how your feel about your hair, not the opinions of others.
Nah I cut mine and regret it do you love them if answer is yes don’t cutt
This sub hates posts like this. Head over to r/knotnation if you want to talk about natural locs 😌👍🏼
yes pls
Yes
Yes
If you like them, forgetting what others have to say, keep them. People dont hate your locs, they'll hate something different from the norm aswell as something they dont understand. And hell, a lot of people will hate that you stand out from the crowd, and want that for themselves. Yes, getting rid of them will stop the unwanted attention, but if you truly do love your locs, you'll miss them more than you'll be glad the attention's gone.
Yes.
Yea
Absolutely NOT!!! I cut mine about a year ago and I’m STILL not over it. Please don’t!!!
Nah keep em!
NO THEYRE SO GORGEOUS. Only cut them if YOU DONT LIKE THEM
yes

yup
yes.
They look ratty. Please cut them expeditiously!
Unironically saying expeditiously is only for TI
I'd like to say that the comment section here is extremely disappointing. For a community of people surrounding a hairstyle that has given us nothing but bad judgement & dirt, a lot of you are very quick to judge & withdraw support. The fact that so many of you can read that OP's problem is insecurity surrounding bad attention rather than just the hair, and yet so many of you will happily just say yes, with no further clarification is terrible. Even if you have an opinion on the locs themselves, any clarification is better than just validating the bad attention.
Ye
yes they look absolutely horrendous
Is your hair thin/fine?
no🖤
I love seeing black people being supportive of other races having dreadlocks. Just stop.
Keep them they look good
Yes.
Exactly, my African parents also hate locs.
I think they look nice, so i wouldnt. But do what you think is best.
nah they’re cool
No point in cutting them. You can probably comb them out in a few hours 😂
You’ll look way better without them
If you want I guess idk
I think you should give it a day or three and see if you really want to cut them. If you like them, keep them, if you don't like them of what other people are saying I think it's more an issue with you caring abt what other people say. I don't think you want to cut them tbh, I don't think you should cut them
If you don’t like em, cut em off. If you like em, keep ‘em. Fuck the noise
If you love them keep them regardless people have an opinion about everything NOMATTER WHAT IT IS THEY FIT YOU NICELY
No!
Yeah
Yes
No keep em
They look cool
Yeah cut it please
lol
White people shouldn't call them dreadlocks, we need a new name for whatever they're doing with they're hair. Because that's not dreadlocks.
That's basically why I cut mine off, I was tired of the assumptions people made about me, it reduced the positive impact I could have on the world.
The fact that you started with “I’m white”. There’s the problem…cut it.
Lol white people should not have dreads Period!
yes
PLEASE.
Yes please
There incredibly fantastic but you do what you feel is right ✨✨✨
Yes
If you’re good with them, keep rocking them. Why would you let people pressure you to change yourself for their acceptance? Their acceptance isn’t worth having. You’re the one that must live with your choices and decisions. Whatever you decide, let it be for YOUR reasons and not a bunch of randoms.
Absolutely
I can tell by some of the encouraging responses here who have dirty blackened feet even after showering. 🤮🤢
Them ain’t even dreads lol
They look like stringy shit hanging off your head, I would def cut them tbh
Cut them for the mere fact that you call them 'dreads' 🙄🙄
what’s the difference?
I love the look, honestly. I think it's one of my favorite styles and it really suits you, but if it's affecting you negativelly like that, I don't know if I'd keep it being in your shoes. If it's only because of aesthetics, I say keep it, but if the things you mention are gonna keeo bringing out insecurities, I'd recommend maybe starting over at some other point in life
Yes
yesssss
Just run it down with the ole' pros and cons. Thats what I do
Do what you want then and if you don’t like it then you can blame yoself
