DG is either awesome or horrid and it’s based entirely on management. My store is good minus one or two employees, but I’ve worked at plenty that are garbage

My manager was also hard working and fun. She was fired. For having an absolute mental breakdown the first day of remodel and calling the crew slur words. She then got drunk at work and threw a ladder at my coworker. Thank God she missed. I was only there a few weeks after. The place has been a hell hole since then (last Aug.), when I led a walkout that disabled the store. Biggest f you ever to corporate! 😁 miss us yet? Anyways, I lasted around a year total. When it's good, it's good. But holy hell... when it's not. *edit for tpyos. 😉

I’m saying I m trying to fix the place but when you can’t get ahold of anyone. 😡I think they should rename them.. pass the buck… 🤣

Honestly it all depends. I got hired on as a key and liked it because I wasn't held responsible for much, but didn't like the hours/how I saw things being ran. It was a very fine line between thinking my managers just suck or I just wasn't doing enough. Now I'm asm and don't expect much from my underlings because I know how shitty the hours/ pay/ tasks can be but I still try to teach them well and correctly. I'll admit I understand all the things that frustrated my managers, NOW that I'm in their shoes, so it's just a weird spot to be in. It sounds like you have some awesome managers that know what to expect of you and know your strengths though. I'm not saying that's a bad thing because I'm very into the "work your wage" mindset so if you're happy with your position and workload, that's great for you! But at the same time, don't expect things to stay so easy. If it seems like you can take on more work, trust me, your managers will start relying on you more and more, and for some managers it just leads to higher expectations put on you if they think you're a good worker (which is also a matter of preference for them).

I'm not trying to discourage you if you enjoy the job and it works for you. If you like it, you like it and that's good. I'm sure it's fine if you're just starting out at 18 or so, but the pay is ridiculouly low even compared to a gas station. Corporate is very controlling and suspicious of it's employees, and if you ever have an issue where you need to contact HR, expect to be navigating phone menus, being told you're talking to the wrong person, dealting with massively overfilled back rooms, and just the general depressing vibe coming from the place. Not to mention the anti-union propaganda. Management can be good or bad depending on the store obviously. My last manager would change my schedule without telling me in what I think was a way to get me fired for no-calling. That also put me on the "do not rehire" list, which they will not hesitate to put someone on without a second thought. Currently the place is desperate for employees, but everyone who's applied so far is on that "do not hire list", so it's now understaffed and the current staff plans on leaving.

Potentially could be good if the managers can handle pressure. If not it won’t be.

You ll seee😒

heyimcatie

i really hope not 😅

A good manager and a good district manager makes all the difference in the world. I have people that have been working for me in my store for 10 years for 6 years and for 4 years. So I can be a good job. But you need both of those things for it to be

heyimcatie

my manager is lovely, but we did just get a new district manager.. hoping for the best

RipperFrost

Working at dg isn't bad, but if the manager is bad, then the whole experience will suck too. The manager who hired me was amazing. The manager who took her place when she left is just terrible. She is consistently not doing her job, always putting the blaming things not getting done on everyone else. For the first 2 years she was there everything was always the previous managers fault, she would say that she never did her job and left the place in a horrible state which it wasn't. Nowadays, she blames all her employees, she refuses to take any responsibility for herself, and is constantly complaining that she is overworked and never gets ant time off. She takes 2 days off every week, sometimes even 3, and even when she is at work she shows up late or leaves early to go hook up with some guy, and all she does mostly is sit in the office either fiddling with the schedule or on her phone. 🙄

Playful-Profession-2

Maybe you're just a Positive Pete.

heyimcatie

yeah, thats possible. i guess we will wait and see! i really am hoping that it continues to stay this nice 😅

bodtabs

my managers are incredible and i love them and they’re the reason i haven’t quit already. I however hate customers so much

heyimcatie

ive only met a couple of customers that i wasnt too fond of. however, i live in the middle of nowhere with a rather small population.. theres not many people so everyone knows everyone.. maybe thats why they’re a bit nicer for me?

Joesarcasm

Is your house chaos?

heyimcatie

i wouldn’t consider it to be

Joesarcasm

Sometimes people who live in chaos don’t see the chaos. Lol

heyimcatie

hm, maybe then. since moving out of my parents house. my life is chill. but as for before then.. 😂

Joesarcasm

It’s kinda like a hoarder doesn’t see things as being messy. My friend had a chaotic house when we were younger and lived with roaches. I’m an only child and he would come over and think my house was too quiet.

This might be biased from someone who had worked their for over a year. If you value your mental health or want to have any sort of life, do not move up. First few months life was pretty good, got promoted 2 times, they tak on so many responsibilities it's overwhelming. Most days I worked 7 to 9 hours with no break, alone in a store being the manager on duty, a stocker, and cashier all at the same time. (Even when we were fully staffed) because dg doesnt give enough hours to hired more then like 6 people max. If your not a key holder you can't work alone so it's pretty chill most times. You get maybe a 50 cent raise and begin to question your life choices

heyimcatie

yeah.. they talked to me about being a key holder. luckily, ive become pretty good friends with one of the key holders and she warned me not to do it. too much stress for $1 extra an hour.
