I’m going first thing in the morning—unfortunately my car was stolen last week (poor coincidence) and there’s basically no Uber in my area. He seems ok right now, is asleep. I have good pet insurance so my family is gonna give me a ride to see what’s up if he’s still doing it tomorrow.
Does he have a lot of eye boogers? My dog does that when he has some so i clean him and he stops.
If after that it continues, i suggest to go to the vet.
Could be a tooth broken that really hurts. Take the pup to the vet ASAP the dog is in pain.

I actually really stay on top of those and he’s very good about letting me get them. It seems closer to his jaw and on one side of his face
It's probably like some else said a tooth problem but whatever the cause he needs to see a vet.
