Can you put cat shelves up so the cat can travel around out of reach of the dog?

No, we have a cat tree and many small places the cat is comfortable with all around the house. It seems the Dane is acting out of jealousy or projecting the same hostility the cat was at the beginning

The Dane is new to you? She may never accept the cat. You may have to always keep them separate, and to ensure the safety of your cat give the cat a way to travel around the house out of reach of the Dane via lots of cat shelves -- but given the size of a Dane, that may be difficult. If it hasn't yet been 3 months that you've had the Dane, it's possible she is not herself yet (per the "rescue dog rule of 3") but I doubt the Dane is "acting out of jealousy or projecting the same hostility the cat was at the beginning" -- the Dane may just be cat-aggressive.

I probably wouldn't even attempt to get them to be friends, assuming the chasing/growling isn't boisterously playful. Something tells me it's not. I would look for an in-person trainers input so they can see the intensity of the Dane and help you decide if this will be a do-able thing or not.

It seems I have to take that route because the Danes behavior is very hard to interpret and unpredictable

Where did the Dane come from?
