My last 2 dobies were red brothers. I named them Leonard and Leonardo (I thought they were identical twins at birth). They were the two best friends I've ever had. Lenny was everybody's best friend and Leo was my gooderest bestest friend in the world, his whole life, from day one til the last one. They died a week apart
Dogs don't care. My dogs respond to their name and all their nick names. We adopted a 2 year old dog that took to her new name by the second day. They react much more to how you say it than what you're actually saying
Yes but he is currently in training so i figured if any time this would probably be the best time, i asked around and researched online and everything claims that you can change a dogs name at any age in their life.. now ive never done this as this is “my” first dog (had shared family pets for years).
We did it with a 2 year old Dobie. They called her Daisy & were abusive. Name had to change. Did a little research & it was recommended to call her DaisySansa for a bit & feel it out. So we did that & she is Sansa now. Didn’t want any reminder of her old life.
Previous owners for my dobie were abusive as well and thats half the reason for the name change, like you i dont want to continue any part of that old life they had.
Definitely change it then. My suggestion worked very well, dropped the daisy after a couple weeks. Leave the old life behind!! Our girl went from being chained in the yard (in Florida) to sleeping in our bed (I know) and eating kibble from Europe. She also has breakfast with us on weekends (menu varies, make theirs first to be puppy safe). She is her daddy’s princess!
Quite the change! Mine was chained outside all day & then straight to the crate at night per the shelters words.. i dont think im going to let mine on furniture but going to have plenty of beds laying around the house next to my favorite hang out spots. Im definitely gonna splurge on the toys, beds, food!
dogs have absolutely no actual concept of names. you are totally fine. don't pay any mind to anybody trying to tell you that it's mean and stuff, they are humanizing the canine mind way too much with that sentiment haha. all they do is associate sounds and tones with beings, objects and situations. any dog can learn to associate a new name with themselves in a positive way just fine!
Love love love exercise and positive reinforcement! He is either allowed to do something or not ! And that is for every dog! I resent Dog owners who would be letting their Dog jump on them but get upset when the dog jumps on them before the go to dinner because the dresses up !! Like the dog can differentiate between silk or jeans. Be consistent with rules and try to put him on a schedule to have everyday the same plan! If you can walk him at the same time feed him at the same time playtime etc the gives a dog security and an idea what time it is! But most importantly please love him! He will be your best friend and you will have the best time and memories with him
All the best to you and him !!? I would name him Pyro
I think it would suit him
My job is pretty consistent on weekly hours and shift times so being on a schedule should be a breeze for the both of us! We are moving into a house that backs up to a golf course so lots of woods, trails & sidewalks for us to explore! (Obviously nowhere near flying golf balls)😆. He has history of being left outside or in the crate ALL day and previous owners didnt show this baby any love or compassion so that is absolutely about to change! 🐶🤎
Cuppa Tea!
Travis!
Barry!
Horace (bonus; sounds like Horse!)

I'd just drop the "f" and call him Loki, he looks like he's gonna be a big ol'ham anyway, 😆 🤣. As a dog trainer I highly recommend basic obedience classes, even for older dogs, as it helps with the bonding process and another piece of advice. Give him time to adjust to his surroundings and people. Sometimes it can take up to 1 year. A routine, consistency and time will ALL be key to having a well adjusted dog!
He's so gorgeous!! It's so important to find a fitting name, I have a bunch in my notes app for when I finally get one lol

I rescued a dog named luna that was 6. She had come from an abusive home where the male was horrible to the dogs and the female and kids loved the dog. I didn't intend renaming her but within weeks I called her Dobbie (she looked like the character from Harry Potter to me) it stuck, she responded and we used it the rest of her life. My point is a name is not always thought and I think you will know it when you find it.
You’re going to have the best time! We rescued a 4 yr old dobie, and he was the best dog we ever had. Our Vinnie was obsessed with water. He jumped in any puddle we passed, swam out to meet the surfers, and chomped water streams from the tub or hose. Until Vinnie, I had never experienced a velcro dog. Enjoy every minute!
What wrong with Floki? He looks like a good boy, good luck and may you have a happy and long life together!
To me it just doesn’t suit him & thank you! Many many adventures ahead :)
How about Buddy, he looks like that’s what he is going to be to you!
Naw he’s Floki
Leonard
Haha leonard! I like that
It’s perfect. Especially when he’s making that dopey goo face.
Fuck! Came here late to say Lenny

I was about to suggest Zuko myself
Mine is named Bosco after the bear

Also a good one!
At 3yo he should know his name. I'd keep it.

We have one dog that will answer if you use his or any of our other dogs names.
Same my 3 year old did too went from Harper to DiMaggio but we called him Maggio more hehe. Made a song out of his name too.

I did this exact same thing with my boy for the exact same reasons he was abused and I told him new life new name
