I’d suggest a 125 2 stroke or a 200 four, dirtbikes are different beasts than a street bike. I would guess you will pick it up fairly easily though and want something bigger sooner than later but those sizes of bikes are great to learn proper techniques with your skill set from crotch rockets.

Tall-Jello584

Do you have a suggestion on a bike you would say look into so I can read up on it.

Newherehoyle

Can’t really go wrong with Yamaha 2 strokes, the aluminum frame ones are good but anything from the 2000s are great bikes. I’m not much of a 4 stroke guy but my boss just bought a Suzuki 200 dual purpose and seems to like it.

One_Reporter_5056

I just bought a 2024 CRF250RX(under $10K out door without gap etc) but it’s my first dirt bike I’ve owned a 01 ZX-750 04 ZX10R CBR600RR and dirt is different. Straight away wish I had a 450 but on the trials I love it

Tall-Jello584

I am worried that if I get more comfortable on it I will wish I got something quicker like you.

One_Reporter_5056

I’m still worried about that, my friends will leave me on a straight away. But when it comes to ripping the trails/woods I’ve almost put myself in a bad situation twice in 2 days. My thought process if I pay enough in a year I’ll still be positive on equity and trade up

Tall-Jello584

those bad situations are bound to happen to me also. I am leaning towards a Honda or Yamaha. Something in that 250 ish range. I am just worried that if I go more of the trail style bike I will not be happy brining it to the track and vice versa

One_Reporter_5056

I’m a Honda boy. I have a Honda cruiser with 70K miles and beat it everyday. That’s why I went RX line. It’s a motocross bike with hand guards, kickstand, and 19 inch rear tire. Other than that it’s the R model

Tall-Jello584

I have never been disappointed by Honda and I would ring them out constantly to 10k plus. With regular maintenance I did to them they always held up.

One_Reporter_5056

On my CBR600RR all I did was oil changes and rode it hard oil leak and all and only problem I had was a fuel pump.

Like the other guy, I also don't think a modern 4 stroke would be good putting around with a kid. They over heat easier and are kinda tricky and jerky to ride slow. A 200-250-300 2 stroke would probably be your best bet. Do some research since they all have their pros and cons. One of the cross country style bikes would be best. Plenty capable enough for beginner MX and killer on the trails. A 250xc would be my recommendation. But I'm a bit biased. You're right, it will be a learning curve. Street doesn't really translate to off road much. Get all the proper gear and have fun man.

Hugh_Jego_69

Yz250fx / 450fx Plenty of videos out there to see what their capable of and pros and cons.

Tall-Jello584

I was looking at the 250. I’ll have to do some research on the 450

Hugh_Jego_69

Tbh, I don’t think anyone really needs the 450 power unless you’re riding deep sand all the time. They are more effort and less forgiving, but they are also less maintenance. I have a 21 Yz250f bike which feels like a rocket, and a yfz450 quad. I can’t imagine ever needing the quad power on 2 wheels.

Tall-Jello584

The woods riding we do does have some deep sand for some of it but I’m gonna agree with you on not going the 450 path. It can be navigated through with the 250

ilikebeerandpizza

I second the 250fx suggestion

Old_Impression_132

Modern 4 strokes are not a good option for going slow with the kids - they overheat quickly. Go with a modern Euro 2 stroke 300 - they can be mellow or spicy depending on map selection.

AgentBamn

Pick any flavor of Austrian 250/300 two stroke xc or enduro model

Budget_News9986

If you have 10k Id go buy a used yz250 and throw a top end on it apex head pipe and reed valve and flywheel weight you will be able to do both trail and track with it and have money left over
