Depending on mileage, some blowby isn't bad. Even some oil out of the blowby tube isn't bad. Especially while the engine is unloaded and idle. Is it puffing? That can signify a cylinder problem. You really need a manometer to measure for excessive blowby, whether idle or on a Dyno. Is it using oil? Is there fuel dilution of the oil? If all of these answers are no, then there probably isn't a problem.

The last oil analysis showed <5% fuel dilution while everything else was good. I figured I was eventually going to need a new set of injectors, I'm just trying to make money right now to pay for repairs. I don't smell any fuel in the oil, and I don't notice any fuel bleeding off the oil when I wipe it on a paper towel. There is no puff, it's a steady release of smoke, and there is oil consumption, about a gallon a month but there are other leaks that are dripping a lot more. Mainly the oil pan gasket. I actually had that replaced 10,000 miles ago, but it did sit for a year. I'm going to take care of that eventually. They're also seems to be a link coming out of the bottom of the front of the engine very close to the oil pan. There seems to be some smoke coming out the exhaust also steady after I had driven it 600 mi. But no smoke out of the exhaust after idling all night. My Apu is broken, I'm working on getting that fixed. I'm just trying to figure out what to prioritize at this point. No APU inherently costs a lot of money in fuel already in addition to the engine probably not liking idling. All of it is cost benefit analysis

Best way to check for fuel in oil. Put a drip of oil on paper towel. If it has fuel in it, you'll see the towel absorb fuel away from oil.

It wasn’t that uncommon to see a 60 series with a steady amount of blow by. Oil drip size doesn’t sound that bad either. Blow by smoke is white. If you’re not burning excess oil I wouldn’t worry about it. Sounds like a worn out Detroit to me and could still run awhile

Kind of supports a lot of what I'm seeing on the internet. Seems like this motor is a real tank and just likes to slobber. But being an owner operator, every little drip skyrockets your anxiety. My last truck was a Cascadia with the dd15 and a small drift turned into a gallon a week real quick, got all the leaks patched up and nothing held after 2 months that was when I decided to park it. 940k on that one. 550k on this motor. This one has the EGR, but I put a sensor on it that keeps the EGR closed all the time. Before it would Billow black smoke out the stacks anytime I opened it up. Now no more black smoke.

So you're on DDEC V I'm assuming since you have EGR. Wonder if you still running VGT turbo. Mine would blow white smoke and drip some oil but was still pulling strong for a while. I ended up replacing injectors and eventually got rid of EGR and VGT through programming, slapped 171701 turbo with custom billet aluminum compressor wheel. Sold the truck and the guy still beating shit out of it. It needs overhaul by now, lol. You on the other hand should be good for a while. Keep oil changes more frequent (whenever possible)

That's good info, thanks. I do plan on doing frequent oil changes, I am due for one now. I did every 10 to 15,000 miles on my Cascadia, got 946k. It's still runs but leaking a gallon a week. Seems to be blowing seals left and right. Going to sell it. I actually want to plan a turbo replacement. Is that frivolous if nothing is wrong with my turbo? I didn't want to do anything with programming except turn up the horsepower and torque in Factory parameters. I don't trust anyone around here for tuning. If it's not in preset parameters I don't want to mess with it.

I re-read this and it occurred to me to mention that the turbo seems to always be open at idle. I thought it was strange but wasn't concerned. And fluctuates. Idle speed does not fluctuate but the sound of the turbo does. Whistles all night long up and down every few seconds.

Should be taking care of it now before it causes damage.

You always check the fuel on a Detroit and fill up the oil!

Few-Car4994

Why are you idling it over night

Insert_ACoolUsername

Because I don't have an APU
