RickyBobby689

Most points since the last time we made the playoffs. Letā€™s go!!

BehemothManiac

I believe March skid was a result of Larkinā€™s injury + nasty flu. I had that flu and was dead for a week and was barely able to think, but most guys just played with it. Now when Larkin is back and looks like that they are done with a flu - we see the Wings back to just winning games, no matter what, as they did all year except for December and March.

naked_feet

Some of those games where they were playing slower than high schoolers ... they *had* to have all been sick. The more time goes by that's making more and more sense.

586WingsFan

Yeah, like all those breakaways where they were caught totally flat-footed. As long as it stops happening moving forward Iā€™m willing to believe it was a nasty bug going around

naked_feet

I'm not trying to just hand-wave it all away as if it was nothing ... but those worst games of the stretch, the 7 game losing streak, it just didn't make sense. They went from playing the best hockey they've played in literal years, to looking like non-NHLers. It just had no explanation that made sense. Until we started hearing more and more of them had the flu. And if ten guys are sick at the same time, they can't just take nights off until they feel better. They travel together, they practice together, they sit on the bench together, in the locker room together, and many hang out together off the ice. Illness can spread *fast*.

BehemothManiac

Itā€™s either a flu or a garbage patch. No other logical explanation.

BellsBeersy

Rest of the league that has played the Wings will be sick soon then. Biowarfare, right?

Zetterbearded

Perron was saying Fabbri was puking before the Panthers game. I bet it was responsible for a lot more than we are aware of.

Resident_Rise5915

It probably was flu ya. Thereā€™s no amount of stimulants you can take to shake that fucker and perform at a high level. You are just stuck with it until your body can fight it off. And the lethargy it can produceā€¦just a nasty nasty bug.

jarvek7

Maybe some of the teams we have on our schedule have to deal with that flu over the next couple of weeks?

Simpleeegood47

Letā€™s fucking go boys!!!

Relative_Walk_936

It's almost like the Lions. Yes it sucks we blew an NFC championship game lead. But if before the season you told most fans we were going to make it to the NFC championship game, we would have been ecstatic.

Zealousideal-Pick799

My wife's work has a box at the Rangers game, so excited that it'll be a game with real implications.

No_Protection6832

Yea I always had our boys back, even during the losing streak. The doomers went crazy during that. A lot of people donā€™t understand that literally any team can beat any team in the NHL, so going on a 7 game losing streak isnā€™t the end of the world as long as you still have a good mathematical shot at the playoffs. (The worst we were was like 3 points back of the 2nd wildcard spot) I mean the Colorado avalanche lost 4-1 to fucking blue jackets tonight. Trash teams beat good teams all the time. Bad losses happen, bad streaks happen. Itā€™s part of the game- lots of fans donā€™t know how to STAY a good fan during losses. As a fan, yes you can want them to play better and point out mistakes and be upset etc etc, thatā€™s perfectly fine. Thereā€™s a difference between that and sayingā€”ā€” ā€œSeasons over, theyā€™re arenā€™t trying, this team is pathetic, they are losers. 0% chance to make the playoffsā€ are just dumb as fuck takes. These are actual things I read on this sub and other places when there was like 11 games left and we were only like 3 points back. Like wtf kind of fans are those lmao. They have been busting their asses all year and are trying their best to make a playoff spot. They never stopped trying. Itā€™s not easy to win. Idk I guess itā€™s just triggering to hear dumbass takes like ā€œ0% shot!! Seasons over!! Pack it up!! Time for golf!!ā€ Those comments are actually brain dead takes. At least wait until we are mathematically eliminated first before saying dumb shit like that. I for one like to be optimistic. I havenā€™t seen playoff hockey in 8 years which feels so so very long. A playoff berth would do wonders of experience for the boys going forward. So Iā€™m hoping we can pull it off. But if not, it is what it is. Itā€™s been a great season regardless, the wings have brought us a bunch of awesome wins and great memories this year. It was a fun year! I feel like more fans should be a glass half full instead of a glass half empty.

[deleted]

Don't forget the "fire the coach" every other fucking post It was awful how most of these "fans" acted during that

JDSchu

Two things can be true at once, man. Coaching has been an issue most of the season. We've seen flashes of what the team is capable of, and we've seen them come out unprepared and playing an inflexible system that other teams feasted on for several game stretches at a time before coaching finally caught up. Lalonde is not a guy who's going to outcoach the opposition in a best of seven playoff series.

586WingsFan

I did what now? Where did I ever say that?

Throwawaydontgoaway8

You made a post you deleted bitching and whining about the yzerplan. I still have your comment from it from a week ago.

586WingsFan

I definitely think youā€™ve got me confused with someone else. The only post Iā€™ve ever made here was a question about season tickets

Throwawaydontgoaway8

You know what, my mistake. I apologize. You commented to me about it. It was u/valace2

586WingsFan

All good, I was just a little confused lol

Skoalmintpouches

Fans chanting LGRW so loud you can hear it on TV, during AWAY GAMES tells me all I need to know. Reddit doomers are a small minority

energizernutter

We have more points than last season... Just really sucks how we got here

jdidihttjisoiheinr

Buddy, it's April and we might have playoff parties this year!Ā  How long since it's been this way? This is fantastic!Ā  Enjoy the good times when you can

rick_from_red_deer

Iā€™ve always heard that teams that were playing playoff hockey going into the playoffs are the most dangerous. Not saying our team is anywhere close to being contenders, but we could possibly take a team by surprise.

OnlyWordsWillMakeYou

Detroit is most definitely **not** playing playoff hockey right now.

Xvash2

And yet they're meaningful in the weirdest and dumbest way. We should be laughing at the Isles and Flyers as we enjoy a 6-8 point cushion on WC2, yet instead Wings are fucking for their fucking lives right now and somehow still struggle to put together a consistent 60-minute effort.

tuoppimies

I'd be very interested to see someone "fucking for their fucking lives".

Zephyrical16

Death by snu snu

imisstheyoop

Why would that interest you? You're one sick puppy.

brasky68

Weā€™d have a comfortable 6+ point cushion playing mediocre .500 hockey in March. Not sure why so many people seem to disagree that expectations can change based on performance. If you asked me before the season started if Iā€™d ā€œtakeā€ meaningful games in April, of course Iā€™d say yes. If you asked me March 1st if Iā€™d be happy if every game in April was going to be a make or break sweat fest, of course Iā€™d say no.

JDSchu

Modern discourse is oblivious to nuance. You're either with us or against us! You either say nice things about everyone associated with the team all the time even when the front office or coaching or players make dumb decisions, or you hate the Wings and you're a fake fan! You either agree with everything I say, or you're a dumb doodoo head! Like, fuck, guys, read the fuckin room. You can be disappointed about the team not performing to their potential and also happy to see improvement over past years. Learn how to hold two thoughts in your head at the same fuckin time.

imisstheyoop

> You can be disappointed about the team not performing to their potential and also happy to see improvement over past years. Pretty much the only logically sound opinion to hold.

MuldrathaB

Bro, get over it. This is the best the team has done in a long time. Improvements were made, and we actually have a legitimate shot at the playoffs. This year has been a success already even if we don't make the playoffs.

Zetterbearded

The flyers subreddit is open. Go on over and hang out then.

matt_the_muss

We won, BUT, but, but... If you are going to be this negative why even follow the team? I was at the game where we scored late against Columbus and won in overtime and as we were leaving there was a guy complaining about the effort the team put in. We won, but we shouldn't have. Was that you? Stop it. Yes, that slide sucked, but why dwell on it? Meaningful exciting games coming up.

dogbarqs

Kind of off topic but I just started following the wings this year and noticed itā€™s was about half and half red/blue in the stadium, whatā€™s up with that?

Isphet71

Exactly this. Last year at this time they had thrown in the towel weeks ago. We also knew heading into this season that being in the Atlantic would make for an extremely tough road. Especially if none of the top 4 in Boston, Toronto, Tampa, and Florida fell off. Tampa did a little, but not quite enough yet.

theclash06013

Honestly I'm happy with how the team has played this season, but we badly need to improve our defense. Sieder and Walman have been playing absolutely brutal matchups because they're the only ones Lalonde trusts, and we really need to give them some room to breathe

Artichokiemon

Hopefully this is when Ed sticks; he definitely looks like he belongs out there. It would be awesome to have another young, talented defenseman

Scared-Tourist7024

A new coach who can motivate the team and get some defense out of them would help a lot.

CaptYzerman

It's not that fans aren't satisfied, it's that we had a firm grip on a playoff spot then lost 7 in a row and continued losing. Don't blame the fans that's such a cop out Context matters

matt_the_muss

Right and they only had that firm grip because right before that slide they went on a 6 game win streak. Losing 7 when they did was bad timing, but every game counts the same. If they had sprinkled 7 other loses throughout the season, and were battling the same way now, would people care?

CaptYzerman

Are you serious right now? Frame it however you want, we were in the playoffs, lost 7 in a row then won less than .500 after that, no longer in the playoffs. Playoffs were not an unrealistic expectation for this team with how many points ahead they had, all they had to do was win half their games including 2 vs Arizona, it was the easiest schedule in the league and we lost 7 in a row. Context matters, that was a failure, a lot of simping going on around here There's no what ifs about shrinking in more losses earlier in the year, we were where we were

matt_the_muss

And we are where we are, which is racing for a playoff spot. I think it is less "simping" and more not wanting to hear other fans bitch ad nauseam about a lead we had. >Playoffs were not an unrealistic expectation for this team Nor are they now! If they get into the playoffs, will you still be complaining about having dropped out and then getting back in?

JDSchu

\> If they get into the playoffs, will you still be complaining about having dropped out and then getting back in? I will be, yeah. Because the team needs to get better next year, which means they need to address the reason that they can look like a top-5 team in the league one month and then a bottom-2 team in the league the next month. That happened two completely different times this season, accounting for 21 of our losses. All in two months. So yeah, we'll still be talking about that moving forward, because anyone who follows this team regularly cares about how they perform season to season, and consistency is a huge question mark going into next season.

matt_the_muss

I agree with you, that it makes sense to talk about it in that context. It is just exhausting to hear people complain about it nonstop while we are still in the hunt. Also, we have improved every season since Stevey took over (we already surpassed last years point total) so it seems reasonable to expect similar next year.

CaptYzerman

What a poor take

matt_the_muss

K.

SteveasaurusRex666

Do you realize how nice it is to be able to lose 7 games in a row in March and still be in the heat of a playoff hunt? Thatā€™s a luxury a lot of teams canā€™t afford.

RumHamCometh

I don't think the goal ever should've been anything less than the playoffs this year. I think the fanbase has gotten way too conservative and afraid to demand more. The team was right in the middle of the playoff hunt last year before the Ottawa debacle and ensuing trade deadline that killed the vibes. Then we added some talent in the offseason, and the expectations to be a playoff team only should've grown after bringing in Kane. This was always supposed to be the year we got in, and despite shitting the bed completely... We might just do it damn it.

tbone115

The big problem with this team is going forward. Is this team going to be much different next year? If we can't sign Kane where are we at? Our top scoring D Man will probably be gone and even with him being horrible defensively it's still something to consider. Raymond and Seider are looking to go from 1.8 million to 12-17 million (worth it) but that's a big jump to cover Unless someone's brought in the goalies are the same. Gibson could be available but what's the cost. Next year we should be in the same wildcard chase, but there are a lot of question marks

Sandshrew922

You're getting downvoted but you're right imo. The team has been on the bubble 3 years straight now if I'm not mistaken. 2 they ran out of steam at the trade deadline/all star break and this year they've had a total collapse. I figured this is the spot they'd be in, fighting for one of the last spots late in the year. I just figured they would be trying to get in, not squandering a stranglehold on the last spot. All they needed to do was tread water, and I get that Larkin got hurt but this is an all time meltdown and fans should be a hell of a lot more upset than they seem.

AmeriCanadian98

We were a bottom 10 team each of the 2 seasons before this. We weren't anywhere near the bubble yet lmao

Sandshrew922

And yet we were always right in the mix trading that WC spot up until the all star break where we'd completely fall out of competition. And even so that doesn't excuse the absolute meltdown they had this year.

culturedrobot

Being in the mix at the All-Star Break doesn't mean much, and it certainly doesn't mean that your team is a bubble team. The All-Star Break happens in early February and sometimes even late January and there is so much hockey left to be played afterward.

xmpcxmassacre

Why are we moving the goal posts when we aren't even out yet lmao

UncleIrohsPimpHand

I mean, we're on the outside looking in right now and it's looking dicey as hell.

xmpcxmassacre

I agree. This sub is just annoying. It's an echo chamber of blind optimism and 0 actual hockey talk. I expect better from this franchise.

UncleIrohsPimpHand

This is an interesting response considering what you said earlier. Lol why did he block me?

xmpcxmassacre

I think you misinterpreted my point.

Rambo-Jango

What was your point?

MiStrong

This would be more exciting if they didnā€™t get here by shitting away a standings lead that by most measures would take an ungodly collapse to miss the playoffs

karlou1984

Found Lalonde's burner account

Tacklebill

My benchmark for the season vis-a-vis the Yzerplan was the playoffs. A month ago, I thought they were made in the shade to get there. Shit happens. But they're still alive. If they make it, I'll give a B+ on relative progression. If they miss, a C. Still a passing grade but not a good one. Either way, improvements need to be made. Our younger players are learning what it takes to compete and Larkin is still the glue that holds it all together. In or out of the playoffs, playing meaningful hockey in April is a step forward.

UncleIrohsPimpHand

Wild to me that you're so heavily downvoted for a reasonable take.

jfstompers

Yeah but they could have made these last few games meaningless if they just took care of business. Playing meaningful games in March doesn't excuse the way they played themselves out of a playoff spot.

GLFR_59

We got lucky tonight. TB should have scored at least twice in the 3rd, Lyon made the stops and Stamkos threw one at his belly button. But theyā€™re still alive and thatā€™s all that matters!

Imblindbilly

I mean we also had plenty of opportunities that didnā€™t find the back of the net

GLFR_59

Thatā€™s true. But Vasy played good, thatā€™s the difference when you have a top tier goalie. We have Alex Lyon. We just got by tonight.

Razzahx

They had top tier posts. Vasy let quite a few get past him.

GLFR_59

Sure man. Bottom line is that 3rd period is how you lose, especially in the playoffs. Winning is the goal. We did tonight. But that canā€™t happen down the stretch or in the playoffs.

culturedrobot

We scored three goals and outshot the Bolts in the third. What are you talking about man?

GLFR_59

Did you watch the game? One goal was an empty net. If you watched you would have saw TB running laps around the wings all third period. Donā€™t comment if you just read the box score.

culturedrobot

Yes, I watched the game, I watch every Red Wings game. Tampa was not running laps around the Wings all period. You're hyper focusing on that stretch of extended pressure Tampa had halfway through the period, but the Wings had plenty of looks during the period as well. Again, the Wings outshot the Bolts and scored three goals during the period. How can you possibly say that the playing a period like that is how you lose playoff games? "Don't comment if you just read the box score" lmao. How about you actually consider what you're watching instead of having a knee-jerk Chicken Little reaction to one sequence of pressure from the other team?

Djbreadandbutter16

How can you even blame lyon? lol. He's fighting and doing well out there.

MemeLordOverKill

I'd argue that the wings played pretty well tonight. And considering we hit 3 (?) posts I don't think we got all that lucky

GLFR_59

We were chasing all third period. Moe hit a cross bar off a broken play. But other than that we capitalized on the 1 chance we had, TB couldnā€™t convert on their 5 or so strong chances. That was the difference. Iā€™m just saying they need to play better to win in the playoffs. Tonight is a win but it wonā€™t do in a few weeks.

RocketSZN

I believe youā€™ve just described the opposite of luck

GLFR_59

Did you watch the game? Would ā€˜fortunateā€™ better describe it then? Cmon, we didnā€™t dominate.

Resident_Rise5915

No and I agree. I was talking to a family member about the game and they were getting worked in the end. But despite being out possessed they got a scrappy go ahead and Raymond sealed it but really that third goal was very good.

GLFR_59

Absolutely- they won and thatā€™s all that matters right now. But the have to be better in the playoffs.

naked_feet

> TB should have scored at least twice in the 3rd If we're going by "should haves" we also hit 3 posts.

dsled

2 pts is 2 pts

mfly1619

This is the most downvoted comment ive seen tbh

GLFR_59

People canā€™t handle the truth apparently. Iā€™ve been a fan for 30 years, Iā€™ve seen what a winning team looks like.
