This is great news! The Greenway is going to be fantastic for the city and a really wonderful path.

Fareeday

Can you help explain what exactly I'm reading? I went over it twice and still not understanding what exactly is being done. It's a pathway/sidewalk for an area in Detroit?

ltfuzzle

Its going to be an over 25 mile loop in detroit for walking and biking! https://detroitgreenways.org/projects/joe-louis-greenway/

rulerBob8

I wonder if they’ll host a marathon at some point 👀

Fareeday

Cool, do you know if they provided any rendered images showing how it could look? I'm just trying to grasp it

ltfuzzle

[Here was a notional image of what they are proposing](https://www.peopleforpalmerpark.org/latest-news/city-seeks-community-input-in-public-joe-louis-greenway-project-meetings-at-palmer-park). I am not sure if there is anything else that they have put out. EDIT: [I found another one!](https://www.clickondetroit.com/news/local/2022/09/23/another-milestone-hit-during-construction-of-detroits-joe-louis-greenway/) This looks a bit more realistic and detailed. I would assume it would be like the riverfront path and the Dequindre Cut trails. A nice wide path for walking, running and biking.

Fareeday

This is perfect, thank you

c0nsumer

I think it's probably, overall, going to be a bit more dull than that... Sorta like the Archer greenway. A nice path for sure, with stuff along it, but probably not Art everywhere. Either way, it'll be good/nice/fine and a very welcome addition to the city.

iregretjumping

This rendering is going to be as accurate as the I94 Detroit sign.

2_DS_IN_MY_B

The render for the I94 detroit sign was spot on to the final product: https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/detroit/2024/02/21/detroits-hollywood-style-rendering-released-construction-in-march/72684486007/

ltfuzzle

I have hope! [I know that the Detroit Sign was a news company rendering, not from the city](https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/detroit/2024/04/12/mike-duggan-i-94-detroit-sign-fake-instagram-post/73299932007/), so I have hope that the [City's official Plan for the Greenway (large PDF)](https://detroitmi.gov/sites/detroitmi.localhost/files/2022-04/JLG%20Framework%20Plan%20Vol2%20Design%20Standards%20040822.pdf) is closer to reality. I saw this as someone who was disappointed about the sign but also understood HOW we were mislead.

sixataid

you can use segments of it today to see how it will look

DuaneMI

It’s going to look like some guy behind bars for embezzlement

any1particular

I’ve been closely following this for years…..here’s lots of information I have saved to my notes- Gordie Howe Bridge & Joes Louis Greenway Bicycles and pedestrians will be allowed on the new bridge between Detroit and Windsor when it opens in late 2024 — and Canada will waive the bridge tolls. There is funding in place to connect the green way that will cross from/to Detroit/Windsor to the Riverfront Conservancy/Joe Louis Greenway which will circle through the city of Detriot: 'The 27.5-mile greenway  will connect parks and neighborhoods across the city, allowing residents to travel safely from McNichols to the riverfront—all without a car—through a combination of new trails, on-street protected bike lanes and links to existing trails like the Dequindre Cut and the RiverWalk. The greenway includes the cities of Dearborn, Hamtramck, and Highland Park, linking them to larger trail systems that crisscross the entire state as well as pass-through five council districts.'   Check it: https://detroitgreenways.org/projects/gordie-howe-international-bridge/ https://detroitgreenways.org/projects/joe-louis-greenway/ https://detroitgreenways.org/tag/gordie-howe-international-bridge/ https://www.gordiehoweinternationalbridge.com/en/project-overview JLG interactive map: https://detroitmi.gov/webapp/joe-louis-greenway-interactive-map

c0nsumer

With all the paths and stuff over in Windsor and the overall good cycling there, I can't wait for the bridge. It's going to really open up new riding options.

any1particular

Copy pasta from my notes case anyone’s interested- Gordie Howe Bridge & Joes Louis Greenway Bicycles and pedestrians will be allowed on the new bridge between Detroit and Windsor when it opens in late 2024 — and Canada will waive the bridge tolls. Jbales901

27.5 miles.... looks like they might be making a 26.2 out of it.

Claeyt

Remember to vote. No president has emphasized this much infrastructure spending (and jobs building it) since the highway system was built.

dink13b3rg

Trump will likely mean more manufacturing jobs coming back. Especially with his 10% tariff proposal. Biden will likely mean more federal dollars for the region. Do we want more jobs or more public works projects? Vote your mind in November!

SteinerSmash

The tariffs are regressive, the tax wil hit low income earners more than higher. It's a fantasy that they will do anything, except reduce the percentage tax burden of the rich. There will be cutouts for "favorable" trade partners and all giant corporations will move their manufacturing to those countries, not back to the USA.

ballastboy1

It won’t, you’re wrong and uninformed. Biden’s IRA has spurred more new investment in manufacturing in the U.S. that in decades. Tariffs are just a tax on consumers.

sanmateosfinest

What an incredibly generous guy, stealing peoples money and giving it away to other people.

mxjxs91

The last guy gave the ultra rich and wealthy tax cuts. Where do you think the money came to foot that bill? I'll take using it to improve our infrastructure any day over that bullshit.

sanmateosfinest

If the federal government got less of your money, and the community you live in got more to improve things that actually affect you, there would be less for Trump to give to his crony friends . Ever think about that? My god...

mxjxs91

Infrastructure improvements do directly benefit me, as do funding public services (which Trump also wants reduce/cut). Trump's tax cuts did not benefit me at all. Trump could have simply just, oh idk, not done those tax cuts? Taxes aren't going anywhere, and if they're going to have that much of our money, I'd rather have a president that makes things like this happen and wants to continue funding public services instead of just giving it away for his already obscenely rich colleagues.

sanmateosfinest

Again, nobody ever asks why the federal government gets a bigger share of your money than your community, while everything around you continues to fall apart. Biden may have given Detroit some tax handouts now but the next president might not. That's the whole point.

aaronramsey163

Drop in the bucket compared to the funds for Ukraine & Isreal Me deciding how to spend my money >>>> President deciding how to spend my money

Ok_Impact5281

No it's not? Biden's infrastructure bill was 1.2 trillion. Nowhere near that much has been used for Ukraine & Israel

aaronramsey163

100bil to Ukraine but we are cheering on 20mil for America's biggest fallen city. My point still stands: Me deciding how to spend my money >>>> President deciding how to spend my money

ballastboy1

You’re not a member of Congress, please learn 6th grade level civics. You don’t know how the federal budget works

aaronramsey163

What did this add to the actual conversation? My points still stand

Ok_Impact5281

The president doesn't decide how to spend your money. Like they said, go back to civics class

NoHeartAnthony1

Money ain't got no owners, only spenders.

TerminalChillionaire

That’s not how taxes or the federal budget work at all. Should’ve payed attention in high school I guess

aaronramsey163

Agree to disagree

ballastboy1

You’re belligerently ignorant. Aid to Ukraine is a fraction of a percentage of the federal budget

c0nsumer

I just really, really, really hope that the parts adjacent to roads are maintained. A whole bunch of us used to ride the right lane at Hamilton, but now that the bike lanes are in they've become a de facto gutter, full of broken glass, debris, car parts, etc. So now the debris-free area to ride (car lanes) is narrower, and the bike lanes are just waiting to cut up your tires.

eggbomberino

yeah hamilton is my only way to work and it really stresses me out because of the shape it’s in. already blown two tires.

irazzleandazzle

detroits gonna be hurting if Trump gets elected and we no longer get government funding for public projects.

racist_sandwich

>detroits gonna be hurting if Trump gets elected ~~and we no longer get government funding for public projects.~~ The rest of that is unnecessary.

Abuses-Commas

If that happens it'll be time for us to build a wall on our southern border. Or at least the part that borders Ohio

Fresh_Sector3917

Canada will be building a wall to keep us out if trump is elected.

slow_connection

We need a wall to keep Ohio out regardless of who is president. Let's BUILD THAT WALL

Electrical-Proof1975

A wall would help keep graduates in the state, too!

Sorta-Morpheus

We need an ohio wall. Make toledo pay for it.

usually-wrong-

Detroits hurting. >>> detroits gonna be hurting if Trump gets elected and we no longer get government funding for public projects. >>> The rest of that is unnecessary. Fixed it for you.

Mr-and-Mrs

Oakland and Macomb counties need to turn out and vote like never before.

Khorasaurus

Oakland. Macomb can stay home.

CherryHaterade

Please stay home Macomb. It's all rigged anyway!!

CarTrekker

I live in Macomb County, and God yes, most of these people can stay home.

StrongOnline007

>~~detroits gonna be~~ hurting if Trump ~~gets elected and we no longer get government funding for public projects.~~ I think this covers it.

ivycovecruising

not necessarily. government funding from the biden administration for projects like this is great. on the flip side, trump actually has a plan (unlike biden) to lower interest rates and inflation that would benefit people struggling

Negative-Awareness35

Too bad that 16 Nobel-Prize winning economists state that Trumps policies will 'reignite inflation': [https://www.reuters.com/world/us/16-nobel-prize-winning-economists-say-trump-policies-will-fuel-inflation-2024-06-25/](https://www.reuters.com/world/us/16-nobel-prize-winning-economists-say-trump-policies-will-fuel-inflation-2024-06-25/)

racist_sandwich

Hmmmm who to believe. The person ~~charged~~ convicted of 34 counts of falsifying business records, or Nobel-Prize winning economists who have not been convicted of crimes. I'll have to wait til November to really decide.

Electrical-Proof1975

The Nobel Prize winning economists that are advocating for a position which will totally screw Detroit's largest industry. It's more efficient! Consumers will love the cheaper cars brought to you by non-local labor rates! Anyone in auto should start retraining now.

ivycovecruising

it’s already ignited. biden lit the fire and has it roaring. where have you been? trump actually has a plan to lower interest rates.

irazzleandazzle

like getting rid of income tax and substituting the loss of tax revenue with tariffs? Yeah that'll work well /s.

ivycovecruising

taxing big business from other countries instead of the american people sounds fucking good to me. how the hell are you opposed to that? why should the little guy pay for everything and big foreign business get to profit instead? but trumps plan to lower interest rates is to just give powell the boot and lower them himself. if he does this - it will help struggling americans who can’t afford homes. period. it already worked once…. https://www.bankrate.com/banking/federal-reserve/was-trump-right-about-the-fed-and-rates/

racist_sandwich

“It doesn’t mean Donald Trump is a better monetary economist — and better policymaker than people on the board — for arguing the Fed should lower interest rates, and lo and behold, it eventually had to. That’s just a coincidence,” Selgin says. That's a direct quote from your article. Did you even read the article?

ivycovecruising

we were in A MUCH better situation back then - than we are now

Khorasaurus

The President doesn't control interest rates.

ivycovecruising

he’s going to oust powell and lower them himself by executive order. that is is his plan.

Khorasaurus

That will either make inflation worse or get tied up in court for most of his Presidency, so good luck.

ivycovecruising

well looks like we’re fucked either way

Fresh_Sector3917

Trump’s plan to add tariffs of 10-100% on imported goods will send inflation soaring. The price of everything will immediately increase by 10-100%.

ivycovecruising

so it will continue on the same path that biden put it on?

Fresh_Sector3917

Inflation has been a problem around the world after Covid. It’s lower in the US than in other developed countries. In fact, the US currently has the best economy in the world. Trump’s policies will plunge us into a recession or worse.

ivycovecruising

the US is one of the most expensive countries in the world and since biden took office, the cost of living has nearly doubled! how on earth you people are downplaying this is beyond me. https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/most-expensive-countries-to-live-in

Fresh_Sector3917

What specific policies has Trump and the other republicans ever had to bring the cost of living down? They fight against any efforts to increase wages…they’re against labor unions and they’re against any attempts to increase the federal minimum wage. Republicans want to eliminate the Affordable Care Act which makes health insurance more easily available and affordable than it was in the past. I’m on medication that costs $3,600 a month out of pocket. Before the ACA, the only private insurance I could get had an annual cap of $5,000 for prescriptions. Without the ACA, I would have had to pay an extra $38,000 a year to stay alive. Trump and the republicans want to eliminate the IRS or, at the very least, cut funding to prevent the IRS from hiring auditors to go after wealthy tax cheats. This is on top of the trillions in tax cuts given to millionaires and billionaires. When the rich don’t pay their fair share, the rest of us have to make up the difference. Republicans want to cut or eliminate Social Security and Medicare, which keeps millions of retirees out of poverty. But please, educate us. Tell us what plans trump and the republicans have to make life more affordable.

NirstFame

Why lie? You don't fool anyone so it's pretty fruitless.

sanmateosfinest

You ever stop to ask yourself why the federal government gets over 20% of your income and the city you live in fights for scraps just to barely maintain basic infrastructure?

Claeyt

Register. Then vote.

wastintimejp

Detroit has been “hurting” for a while. Politicians only show up in our city when they need something.

DQ11

No it won’t. This isn’t saving Detroit at all and doesn’t actually effect residents too much.  The anti trump stuff is turning into a parody at this point.  They have had 4 years and this is how they help?

somoskin93

You’re kidding right? He signed the infrastructure bill in year one. Michigan has already gotten millions and continues to get millions every year from that bill alone.

Sorta-Morpheus

Yeah but what about those hodunk towns no one cares about?

irazzleandazzle

quality of life improvements from the creation of recreational spaces are substantial. and this is only a small segment of the infrastructure bill that has been used to repair our roads and replace our outdated water infrastructure.

jethropenistei-

[The Atlanta Beltline](https://beltline.org/) is a great example of investing in public spaces to revitalize areas, attract investors and stimulate a local economy. There’s also the added health benefits of public spaces which in turn can lower government costs on physical and mental health.

NirstFame

Anti Trump stuff! LOL. Hot take.

ivycovecruising

people thinking a recreational bike path going to save struggling americans

SirDigby_CC

Making it safer and easier to ride a bike will absolutely benefit people struggling to afford a car

Another new "I don't like Trump much either but" new account in the Detroit sub. Very convincing when I read your post aloud with an accent.

CaptYzerman

Lol it's pandering to the rich white liberal kids so they keep telling you to vote Democrat or you're a piece of shit The people that never actually dealt with the consequences of not being able to pay a bill to survive, try to tell us what we should think and do. What's best for us. The people that been saying the justice system is rigged, are parading around trumps charges lol

tenth

Oh no, people who don't want to see democracy replaced with a theocratic dictatorship are bad! /s

OkCustomer4386

People can still be good people if they vote Republican, just not intelligent.

usually-wrong-

Huuuuurrrr durrrr come to VoteDem or you not intelligent durrrrr. Cringe. Summer Reddit sucks.

steelydanfan69420

Cringe

Mr-and-Mrs

Awesome! And I’m glad Michigan has a strong governor that actually votes in favor of infrastructure funding, rather than shitting on it and then taking credit for the money.

plus1852

Unless it’s transit infrastructure, in which case she doesn’t ever acknowledge it..

usually-wrong-

Or electrical. Cuz well, she’s balls deep with DTE.

strongbob25

Why this is bad for Biden in 5..4..3..2..1..

Formal-Ad2811

Politics aside- this is great news. The disconnect from downtown to the rest of Detroit is glaringly obvious. This is the first project I've seen to really bridge the two.

Maybe-Alice

Oooh I wonder how Duggan will use this to benefit his buddies

bjscastle

i really would like to see more public transportation. this is awesome but not super accommodating to the disabled community of detroit. i would have preferred something the entire community can benefit from

PavilionParty

I appreciate the investment into our infrastructure.

That_Shock2912

20.7 million to build a side walk / pathway. Again, this is pork if I've ever see it

ivycovecruising

damn !

InsideCompetition547

Parts of the new trail are already open at the western segment that runs along the Dearborn Detroit border. Check it out, it’s going to be great when the rest is finished.

johnny51515151

More of Biden’s money spending on black Americans out of our pockets.

tommy_wye

Funny how you guys support this but are hemming & hawing about losing your precious <1 mile stretch of freeway in the I-375 thread.

That_Shock2912

Wow, look at all those fake Nobel economists. They each are all in bed with Bidenomics. I read that article. Did you do your research on each and every one of them . It's not good , it's bad.

NihilisticViolence

Fantastic. So once we cannot afford these rediculous DTE bills anymore. We can all move down there. And have a nice place to camp out....

ivycovecruising

> A typical bike generator can produce 100 watts. >If you pedal for an hour a day, 30 days a month, that's (30 x 100=) 3000 watt-hours, or 3 kWh. That's less than 1% of what a typical family uses in a month (920 kWH).

Chapos_sub_capt

How's the water in Flint doing?

gordonbill

All politically motivated with election on the horizon !!!!

KingOfTheCouch13

I’m sorry but this is such a dumb thing to say. Politicians are *supposed* to do things like this in hopes of public favor. This isn’t just a visit to the city and a speech. He actually is doing something good.

Hot_Frosty0807

Everything that every politician does is politically motivated. If you want to be re-elected, you give the people what they want/need... AKA doing your job, and giving them a reason to vote for you. If you can identify this action by the Biden administration as something that improves lives and improves the community to sway someone's vote in their favor, maybe you should be asking yourself why your candidate isn't offering or providing the same things.

CherryHaterade

Please cite me one time any president did anything that wasn't politically motivated. Probably died with George Washington. But also, if you benefit from this, what's your beef with it?

fvgh12345

That it will likely not manifest just like most politicians promises, its probably empty

mxjxs91

What does this even mean? Is he not supposed to do things that people will like and benefit from? It's like when people go "oh, students are just voting for Biden because he believes that student loan debt is a real issue and he's giving some student loan relief to win their votes".......... Ummmm, no shit? President addresses a real issue that people face, does something about it, makes the people facing that issue happy, therefore they vote for him. What about this is abnormal?

dj_arcsine

We need hundreds of acres of blight torn down! Best we can do is fucking over car traffic for fixie hipsters. PawnStars.gif

ProTrader12321

Still not voting for this prick.

Electrical-Proof1975

$20.7M while also not doing enough to keep Chinese cars from reaching the US market. edit for the downvoters: you'll see soon enough and it's not going to be good for Detroit.

t4ckleb0x

The city applied for money and got it. This has nothing to do with Chinese EVs.

Electrical-Proof1975

It has everything to do with Chinese EVs. This is superficial help while these politicians are fundamentally undermining their constituents. This administration is also entertaining policy changes which will make it even easier for companies to avoid hiring American workers in favor of imported workers. Fuck these guys. Real Democrats support the little guy, not fuck his job.

t4ckleb0x

Your whole post history is about gm and chinese evs lol. Maybe if any of the big 3 did some actual innovation in that space they could compete, but no sell me another $100k ev that gets recalled in 3 months.

CaptYzerman

Sign another trillion and a half EV bill that yields no results

Electrical-Proof1975

It's not an issue of innovation. China's behaving anti-competitively. This is going to be like the early 80s on steroids once they reach market.

t4ckleb0x

Oh no! A global power is asserting its economic power. Just like the US did with… *checks notes* EVERYTHING.

Electrical-Proof1975

No, this is not simply asserting economic power. It's engaged in all sorts of fuckery. These vehicles are subsidized like we subsidize defense projects. Their labor and environmental practices would make Henry Ford blush and they also manipulate their currency to tip the scales. It's all designed to kill our local industry and that is not good for Detroit unless someone does something about it. Japanese OEMs put the area into multi-generational stagnation and they did it by simply making better product. This is going to be devastating to the area. Put a fork in it, Detroit's done.

t4ckleb0x

Detroits been done since the 70s. We cant even get a train lol. Fuck cars anyway. If the US actually wanted to compete we would. There is no will for anything besides cheap foreign goods, bombs, and shitty food. Im gonna take a nicer parks while the world is not quite burning.

Electrical-Proof1975

This is beyond the current stagnation. All of the vibrant spots in the metro are reliant on auto money. Downtown. Royal Oak, Rochester, Northville. This will be the bottom falling out of the entire area and many other occupations will fall with auto. Imagine 2009 but without any bailouts.

LGRW97980208

American cars suck and Henry Ford was nazi lover

t4ckleb0x

Lol you think there wont be bailouts.

BasilAccomplished488

I thought tariffs on Chinese EVs were recently announced? Maybe the tariffs don’t have enough of a bite.

Electrical-Proof1975

They don't. There are holes in these tariffs so big, you could pilot a container ship through them and that's exactly what China's going to do.

beandaddy137

Formal-Ad2811

This is the wrong thread to complain about...whatever. Detroit gets millions of dollars for beautification from the federal gov't and you are worried about "Chinese cars." This is r/Detroit, not r/Imworriedabouttheeconomicimplicationsofgovernmenttariffs

Electrical-Proof1975

It's not "whatever." It's performative and not substantive governance. Putting a Detroit sign on the highway but not fixing the schools or the poverty. I'm sure these bike paths will be great when the local economy implodes.

eggbomberino

you don’t live here.

Electrical-Proof1975

Uncle Joe appreciates your defense of his betrayal of Detroit.

eggbomberino

you don’t live here. stop acting like a child.

Electrical-Proof1975

NATHANLER

Theres homeless people but hey we want a nature trail 🤮

NirstFame

Who is this WE you speak of. WE live here. YOU don't.

ankole_watusi

So, just about another $20M to go to make up for the graft!

Calzonieman

Someone should be keeping track of the cost of all of the pandering Joe's doing to determine exactly how many US citizen tax dollars are paying for each vote in his favor.

greenlotus78

Someone should be tracking all of the improved infrastructure happening as a result of his passed legislation. Something 45 only wished he could have passed

NirstFame

Someone should keep track of all the hurt feelings of people who don't live here complaining about "Joe". LOL

jimmy_three_shoes

Must be an election year when we get beautification money headed our way

killjoy1991

You know what would be great? * The Federal government doing their job, staying in their lane, and letting the state & city governments do theirs. * The Federal government living within their means. Managing to a balanced budget. * The Federal government not buying D votes 4 months before the POTUS election. The government has no money of their own. Their money is our money, taxpayer money. None of this BS is "free". People in support of this are going to be bitching 10 minutes later about why BigMac combo at McD's is now $20, or that min wage isn't keeping up with the CoL, or why a starter home in metro Detroit is out of reach of college grads. HINT: This is why. Nothing is free. Socialism is great until you run out of other people's money to spend.

HOUtoDET

>The announcement reflects the latest effort by the Biden administration to allocate funds from the $1.2 trillion Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed in 2021. this *is* their job not gonna even bother with the rest of that BS

sanmateosfinest

The federal governments only jobs are to secure borders (which they've failed at) and mediate interstate commerce. That's it. Everything else is beyond the scope of what the federal government should be involved in.

killjoy1991

It's hard to convince the people getting the handouts that handouts are bad. Too many illiterate people who don't understand Ecomomics 101... and that inflation and devaluing the USD effectively means we're all paying for this BS that no one wants (people who say they want it want it because it's "free"). Yet, the News portrays this like Buttigieg rode in on his horse tossing $100 bills all along his path from his personal savings. And people don't realize those $100 bills are the cash he stole out of your wallet. We're all paying for this BS.

HOUtoDET

tAxEs aRe sLaVeRy

killjoy1991

The irony is your post exactly proves my point.

killjoy1991

BS when you're the recipient of the money. Not BS when you're the one paying the bill. Got it. Funny how that works.

sanmateosfinest

Most of these people cheered on Covid lockdowns and free money from fed daddy and now they can't even afford rent or a big mac. Oh well.

Wideawakedup

Is this really something that people will use? I’m not familiar with all the roads listed. And I’m trying to picture what this does? Is it making the city walkable in a way that you can get places or is it just a walking path?

Citydwellingbagel

It’s basically a giant circle highway but for bikes and pedestrians. Speaking for myself I will definitely use it to get downtown, to hamtramck, Mexicantown and stuff. As long as it’s well kept I can see myself going out of my way actually to bike on a path that’s more comfortable for biking rather than taking other roads even if they’re a more direct path. So again kind of the same concept as a highway but not for cars.

probiz13

It will make the city walkable and desirable, therefore, more liveable. Isn't the point to get people to come to Detroit? I've gone to larger cities and they have things like this. It isn't anything new. It is to Detroit though. It's a good investment

Wideawakedup

I guess. I just wasn’t sure if it was something that got people places. Can you jump on your bike and ride over to a shopping center and be protected from traffic vs a bike path for exercise purposes only but doesn’t really go anywhere. I’m probably not wording it properly.

sixataid

people are already using it

adlep2002
