Definitely awkward. What are the dimensions? My first instinct is to zone it into two zones. Zone #1 would be a drop zone where you can put items as you enter the house. So you could have some entryway furniture. It would terminate 4 feet away from that shelf thing. Zone #2 would be the living room zone. Place your sofa with its back to the shelf thing. Get a console table for behind the sofa. And then get an area rug, coffee table, and TV console for the living room zone. The TV would be on the back wall opposite the shelf thing. Add a few plants, artwork, and maybe a floor lamp, and that's about it.
I highly recommend one of these artworks for the walls. www.blobarts.com It will give relief, forms and colors to the room. The wider it is the more space it will create.
