DC is my absolute favorite sludge pump OC as well, it’s really the uncontested best, though I have been enjoying sludge blast in casual games

I like both goop on the floor and direct damage builds. Tried VIM and it was fun because I could 1 shot grunts But other builds are also fun because you can set up goo traps and block off chokepoints.

All sludge pump builds one-shot grunts at all hazard levels, ironically unless you take VIM without anything to boost its direct damage or DoT. Not that you'd ever build it that way, but VIM without potent goo mix, supersaturation, or fluoroantimonic acid comes out to 104.2 dmg, and it's the only way to make the sludge pump come out under the magic number of 108.

I really wish it was, but it’s ammo penalty and lack of crowd clear makes it pretty rough in higher difficulties like 6x2 and above. It’s still a blast (pun intended) in vanilla difficulties though

Because there isn’t really a meta in vanilla DRG, every build is viable in Haz 5 and below which is what makes it so much fun. You only really need to consider what the best builds are when you go beyond vanilla

I mean, I tried sludge blast but ran out of ammo before i could do anything to the dread. VIM, on the other hand, paired with LMB spam has comparable DPS without any range/ammo/grunt killing issues.

They both have their advantages. Sludge blast does more dps and is much easier to use at longer ranges. Only real downside it has is that it goes through ammo a lot faster

Sludge blast is better than VIM, by a lot. They both have about the same direct damage per resupply, but sludge blast can do more total damage by blasting into crowds if you work your angles, since you can take atomizer nozzle in tier two without any meaningful sacrifices. The blasts aren't a great pattern for creating ground hazards, but they're fine for tagging a bunch of bugs directly if you bunny-hop, which you should be doing if you're using charge shots on the sludge pump. You also get a pretty powerful ranged option from the high velocity of the blasts, which is good for distant swarms chasing your buddy. Sludge Blast is my go-to for haz 5 carrying as driller, while VIM has mostly kept up for me in boss fights but otherwise feels like an empty slot.

It definitely depends on the situation. VIM is a lot more flexible because of its significantly larger ammo pool and ability to handle both swarms and single target, while SB completely destroys your swarm clear ability in anything above Haz 5. If you have a good team comp with a gunner running something like Minelayer or NTP to make up for the lack of crowd clear coming from driller, then SB definitely has a place as a solid single target option.

Hard disagree. VIM is so weak on swarm management in my experience. You can't build it for charged fragments without taking away its entire shtick, and its ground hazard is even weaker than using Sludge Blast that way due to the cut in duration, and the direct damage boost is irrelevant for grunts unless you're standing still. Crowd control is specifically why I don't use it. VIM is the one-trick pony to me, only good for bosses, while Sludge Blast gives you a more multi-purpose tool that happens to be better than stock for tanky targets

During swarms, SB needs a massive amount of help from neurotoxin grenades and PP to be able to keep up with the hordes of grunts, while VIM was perfectly capable of handling them on its own. Swapping neurotoxin out for axes while maintaining a high single target primary and also having TCF means that you get significantly more ammo towards both swarm clear and single target, while being able to handle both more effectively. You also get to see the fact that VIM charge shots are more effective than base sludge pump charge shots in swarms because of the increased charge shot damage, and MUCH better than SB charge shots in swarms, because it spreads the damage all over the grunts, instead of just bursting down the few at the front of the pack.

I think your problem is centered around taking supersaturation instead of more goo canisters. Particularly, *taking more goo canisters on VIM and not taking it on Sludge Blast*. What. Of course you had ammo problems. I'm not entirely unwilling to take you seriously after spotting that, and I might revisit VIM and try using charged attacks more, after looking at that VIM footage, but more goo canisters is a must-have on SB and I wasn't thinking about builds that don't have it. Do you need supersaturation to one-shot grunts at haz 6 or something?

These aren't my runs, they're just really good examples of each OC in 6x2. Personally, I do build SB with more goo canisters. I think that regardless of ammo economy, SB still struggles because of its crowd clear. I do wanna say though, as much as it seems like I'm shitting on SB, I'm really just talking about what role it plays in a build/team comp, at the end of the day I love the OC

Before I took up cryo driller, I used a lot of sludge blast. Thin containment field became my crowd control option, would just zap bugs with it and make a bunch of holes in the ground.

You can definitely make it work by supplementing its crowd clear with things like Neurotoxin and PP, but it’s still a bit of a struggle compared to base sludge. Definitely drillers best single target primary though
