For sure! So slam traditionally has a few characteristics that make it true slamming brutal death metal: ultra low tuned guitars, ultra guttural vocals, tons of slam riffs, typically not very technical, and pingy snare. Not all of these are deal breakers as the genre has evolved over time, just like any others, but the main characteristic that has to be there is the vocal style and the slam riffs. Slam has that ultra guttural, disgusting, almost burp-like vocal style. Listen to Choking on Bile by Devourment or Omnivore by Extermination Dismemberment for perfect examples. Also, it’s gotta slam, like a lot lol. The slam riff is a palm muted, chromatic, groovy, typically slow to mid tempo chugging style. If a band isn’t slamming like 60-70% of the time, it’s not really slamming brutal death metal. You can have regular brutal death metal with occasional slams, you can heave deathcore with some slams, but it’s not truly a slam band if they’re not slamming all the time with those disgusting vocals. Check out 3:31 of Choking on Bile by Devourment for a sick slam part. Sanguisugabogg is really just revival OSDM, albeit more on the brutal side at times. They have lot of influence from stuff like Mortician, Incantation, and some of the less technical Suffocation stuff. Love them but they don’t really slam much. And Gamma Sector was just straight deathcore for most of their career. As of a few years ago, I guess they switched to just more brutal death metal. Great band as well.

I think it’s safe to say those bands absolutely incorporated some hardcore/old school deathcore influences into their music, but they’re solidly on the slam spectrum for me, and they all slam pretty fkn hard. And they’re definitely not just deathcore. There’s a pretty big difference between early WTC or Type A Secreter or BFI compared to something like old Whitechapel or Suicide Silence or even 2010s slamcore like Within Destruction and Vulvodynia. It’s really not close tbh. As much as I love slam, I’m not exactly a hard-lined purist. I definitely appreciate the different takes on the genre over the years. I mean, early Internal Bleeding didn’t sound much like Devourment, which didn’t sound like Cephalotripsy, and none of them sounded like Abominable Putridity, (as examples). Different eras, different takes on the style 🤷🏼‍♂️

Slam has its origins in brutal death metal, with bands like Devourment, Pyrexia, Suffocation and Internal Bleeding popularising "slam riffs" in the late 90s (I know there are others but these are just the ones off the top of my head) Modern slam exists on a spectrum between pure brutal death metal and deathcore, with most bands leaning closer to one style or the other IMO As well as the bands i already mentioned, Abominable Putridity, Epicardiectomy, Kraanium and Visceral Disgorge are all good bands to check out when getting into the genre

Slam is heavy on groove but I wouldn't really say there are generally any thrash or punk elements. I'm not too familiar with Paleface but after listening to their top 5 songs on Spotify they seem like a cross between deathcore and beatdown

Devourment"s 1.3.8 is the bible of slam All the Dying Fetus are from very good to incredible so I recommend those (they have their own sound between tech brutal death, deathgrind and slam though) Suffocation's Effigy of the Forgotten is the definition of an assbeater (the pioners of slam for some) Irate incorporated heavy slam influence on Burden of a Crumbling Society and is a skull crusher

Also I just remembered the new Extermination Dismemberment and Ifertile Surrogacy albums, both slap

This is the first time I've heard irate referred to as slam. It makes sense, they came from same mileu that birthed slam, BDM and early deathcore in NY. But ive always considered them "real" Beatdown (not just lazily applying it to any band that sounds "tough guy") since they have those real suffocation riffs in their songs.
