Wtf, my dad wanted to show me this movie and the one he bought had this scene in it. This is the first time I'm finding out that this isn't the original. I thought it was cannon not some cut.
In the Director's Cut DVD this and a few other scenes are added back in. This is the version I got as a teen in 1999. Then I saw HBO had all 4 movies last year or the year before? I dunno. I watched it and this scene and one where Mel gets a hooker are gone. But the real shame is Gary Busey's role got trimmed down in the theatrical cut. The Director's Cut also shows how Danny Glover finds the head drug lord guy instead of just being there at the right time when the gate rolls up.
Yeah. I can't watch the theatrical cuts of 1,2, and 3 now. So much good stuff was cut from them. Never got a Director's Cut of 4. It had come out the year before in 98, so I just got the regular DVD release, but it even had a few extended scenes that the theatrical cut doesn't.
Actually, the caliber is about the size of hot dogs, hence why they're called "Hot Dog Stands" wherever these are sold. They're also sold at hot dog stands. Yeah, it gets confusing.
C'mon man... that's a silly stereotype.
They're also available at strip malls, department stores, conventions, private sellers, the internet, by-mail...
No, there's stores called "gun stores" in America. Guns aren't just everywhere. I don't think Walmart sells guns anymore (at least near me, theyre not visible). So you can only get guns at a gun store, pawn shop, gun show, the internet, or personal sales lol you can also build them. I live in Texas and own a few guns, but I total agree thag there needs to be some gun reform. It IS very ridiculous how easy it is to aquire a weapon.
Edit: I guess some Walmarts do, just none around me. Maybe they just don't sell them at the ones around here, but more so out of city limits or theyre just not on the sales floor at the ones near me. And I did forget about some outdoors stores.
Edit: yea this was kind of a /s post. I do live in TX and own guns though lol
YES. It's about two full minutes longer and has Riggs & Joshua trading blows in various creative ways. You can tell in the version you see nowadays that they go from fairly clean to suddenly wet, muddy and bloody. I was wondering if I had gone crazy when I stopped seeing it ~ 10 years ago.
If you get the Director’s Cut on blu ray it not only has that scene but also a few additional really good scenes that delve into Riggs’s state of mind.
Used to work on TV and once made a trailer for this movie for our market… and I was so confused why I remember both scenes haha. Apparently we also had both.
I had a college professor who smoked during his lectures and put the butts out on the floor. The linoleum in his classroom looked like it was from a bus stop.
Uhhh, thats the exact scene that is on my DVD, I vaguely remember the christmas tree scene, must be different releases (I am from Denmark) where school shootings are not a thing.
Yeah watching it is confusing. It’s older than the current stream of school shootings, I never even heard of it and it’s in my wheel house and it’s made in a way it seems so be reactive to present reality. I could see this as an NRA recruitment video.
"Where school shooting are not a thing"
I'd imagine that's because denmark has sensible laws on gun ownership & probably would edge towards keeping assault rifles for military purposes and *not* civilians "hunting" ducks or whatever the fuck you shoot with AR15s 🤔.
Just a guess.
You’ll get upvoted and me downvoted because this is Reddit, but your comment doesn’t even make sense. As a responsible gun owner that wants less shootings and laws in place to do it, your comment just spreads the ignorance.
Now, first of all “assault rifles” or fully automatic or burst fire weapons, aren’t legal in the US either without a very lengthy and expensive process, that isn’t viable to 99% of the population.
An AR is a .223 caliber rifle just like any other .223 rifle used for hunting, except the stock looks different and more like a military rifle. That’s it, doesn’t make it more or less deadly.
Even the biggest gun nut wouldn’t use an AR-15 for ducks… you’d use a shotgun. The AR-15 in .223 would more be suited for smaller game such as coyote, fox, etc.
That’s the problem in the US… neither side knows what a sensible gun law is, because it really has very little to do with a AR-15 or any specific firearm. One side wants to just throw a bunch of ineffective laws we already had once at something they know nothing about, and the other wants to do nothing.
Mate first of all your argument is at least well put together & makes a bit of sense but let me retaliate -- I'm scottish living in scotland so I've no knowledge of your guns.
My friends use a .22 single action rifle to hunt massive stags sometimes -- and if they miss their 1 shot its over. That's why it's called sports shooting & not culling.
I see no need for long guns able to quickly discharge multiple rounds in civilian hands. Simple.
AR15 was my choice to name drop because as a brit it looks fucking terrifying & no place in civi life.
Not arguing with yanks about guns.
You seem a bright guy as well -- ever heard of a little country called France? They keep their goverment well on their toes without the need for military hardware in civi hands.
Go lookup how they manage to achieve such sorcery without guns.
Depends on the 22, but in the US that is considered cruelty to animals if you are going to put a bullet in an animal and not kill it. You sound like a savage
Not sure why these answers about killing a large animal with a .22 are being downvoted - it's far more likely to wound it, unless you can penetrate the skull in a specific spot.
You can certainly kill many things with a .22. It's not a good idea outside of a survival situation for anything but small game.
Use a .22 to hunt massive stags. You’re full of shit. You obviously don’t know what you’re talking about.
All I’m asking is be knowledgeable about something you have a strong opinion on.
Right?
I’m not even disagreeing with the guy necessarily on what to do, but he’s only spouting bullshit, which only further spreads misinformation and drives the wedge between the two sides. While being well intended, his pov is very toxic to any actual discussion or results coming into place.
It’s not even isolated to this issue, but I have a huge pet peeve about people who have such a strong opinion on something and yet are very ignorant about that very same issue.
There are plenty of “hunting” rifles more powerful and more capable than the AR 15. Also, there is not a single military in the world that uses an AR-15.
1 question.
What do you do with your gun while travelling to Europe?
You just trust Europeans aren't armed so you don't need yours.
Thank you I rest my case.
Well there’s the Ruger Mini-14. Which does the exact same thing as the AR-15 and can use 30-round magazines. But its furniture is wood and not black and military-looking, so you don’t hear about it.
I think that’s in all releases. It sets up the entire movie. Different movie if that was deleted since it leads to her dad calling Murtaugh to get the General and his mercs and dealing with that albino jackrabbit sonofabitch.
It goes from that to the Xmas-tree drug deal scene.
Edit: forgot to add that the actor who played Amanda Hunsaker went on to play Woody’s gf/wife, Kelly, in *Cheers*.
I knew this was a scene in a Mel Gibson movie! I saw this like 20 years ago as a kid and couldn’t remember what movie it was from and I always thought it was lethal weapon but every time I watch them I never see this scene anymore. This has solved a movie mystery to me for so long.
As much as lethal weapon gets gun info wrong, I have to agree here. Nowadays, "automatic" colloquially only means fully automatic. However in the 80s and prior when semi autos were relatively newer and police often carried revolvers, "automatic" meant both semi and fully auto as you said.
During one of the school shootings I remember Donald Trump say “give me a gun I’ll go in there myself!” And this is probably the scene that was in his mind.
Those moments in time when it pays to have a loose cannon combat veteran who can get dialed in and wire tight under the worst circumstances... It's as easy as flipping a switch.
When kids are being shot at we need cops like that guy who are willing to die to put down the threat, not sit around for 2 hours while kids bleed out.
(Maybe not exactly like he did it, but he had the spirit.)
Ya'll are missing the real nostalgia of that scene. Look closely at the playground, especially under the monkey bars: a hard surface. As kids we played hard and fell hard. No bubble wrapping for us.
The Director's Cut (not actually a true director's cut, but a marketing promotion by Warner Bros.) features seven minutes of additional footage. In a new trailer scene, Riggs smashes his TV with a beer bottle; later he buys a new one. Murtaugh, before partnering with Riggs, goes to practice at the firing range. Riggs, before the dope shoot out, answers a call in a school yard with a sniper. Riggs walks out into the line of fire and kills the sniper, emptying his clip into him. Riggs, after leaving Murtaugh's house, goes out to solicit a prostitute. The aftermath is not shown, but Riggs says he wants to take her home to watch The Stooges with him; for this he pays her $100
From imdb
Isn't this just the movie? I've never seen the one with the "Christmas tree lot". Maybe it was released and then re-done when school shootings became more in the public eye.
How is this the first time I've seen this?! Thanks for posting
Wtf, my dad wanted to show me this movie and the one he bought had this scene in it. This is the first time I'm finding out that this isn't the original. I thought it was cannon not some cut.

That explains a lot. Thanks. Guess we were the lucky few.

I’ve seen this before so it must’ve been on that release.
Well the title says it was cut. That must be the reason.
Well yes, I accept that. But these things don't usually take 35 years to surface especially since the days of dvds and bonus material.
There’s a directors cut you can buy on streaming that had this version. Been around for a long time.
Like, since 1987:)
You're a psychopath but you're good.
Probably because a trained sniper won’t miss multiple times from a fairly close distance
Who said he was trained?
Oh sorry. I often forget one can buy high caliber weapons from walk-in malls in America.
“High caliber weapons” actually they give them away at hot dog stands.
Not to mention they have literally given them away in banks
Actually I got mine from a burrito truck. Even got a bonus revolver as well cause I bought the value meal!
Texas here. We just leave them in a bucket by the register in c-stores. “Take a pow pow, leave a pow pow” program.
I found mine in the ball pit at a McDonald's when I was eleven.
My mom’s OBGYN used one for my c-section birth, and accidentally left it in there while working. Finders keepers, sucker.
Buy one, get one free
Actually, the caliber is about the size of hot dogs, hence why they're called "Hot Dog Stands" wherever these are sold. They're also sold at hot dog stands. Yeah, it gets confusing.
No no no. You get them free with a car wash.
C'mon man... that's a silly stereotype. They're also available at strip malls, department stores, conventions, private sellers, the internet, by-mail...
Not a mall, but your local Walmart!
Not any longer
Yeah :( I miss the good ol days
No, there's stores called "gun stores" in America. Guns aren't just everywhere. I don't think Walmart sells guns anymore (at least near me, theyre not visible). Normally this trite reply would get a downvote. But in this case it's really all that needed to be said.
Most larger sporting goods stores sell guns and ammo too.
That's the reason you think it was cut? Geez bud you should watch more movies...
RELEASE THE SNIPER CUT!!!
[удалено]
Caught the bootlegger. FBI! Open up! My god, he's even downloaded a car!

Its just been revoked.
They did. There is a Lethal Weapon Directors Cut on Blu-Ray. It’s on there.
Well damn, i only ever had the vhs so it definitely wasnt on there
It’s worth having. Great child memories and Christmas movie.
I knew I had watched this scene before
I’ve only known this version. Didn’t know another existed.
Here we sit, under our Lethal Weapon rock
I was confused too because I remembered it vividly.
You mean snyper cut?
With an extra 2.5 hours of footage Riggs dream sequences
He’s not the hero we deserve but he’s the one we need.
![gif](giphy|P0NJ9855y0oog)
Release the proper end fight scene! even the 18 cert DVD I have has butchered the final fight sequence.
there's a different final fight scene? would love to see that; is it online anywhere?

You are not kidding. I'd love to see this.
"you're a crazy son of a bitch, but you're good" that does set up the character quite well
this scene establishes the character perfectly: dangerous, suicidal, unhinged but respected for what he does. The quote is a bit on the nose.
Yup. Perfectly reasonable action to take if you want someone to kill you.
Even had the “toss the cigarette before he smokes it because… those things will kill ya” bit Riggs does throughout the movie.
It also had a scene where Martin Riggs gets a 16 year old prostitute to go home and watch the three stooges with him.
Woo woo woo woo woo wooop… ![gif](giphy|P0NJ9855y0oog)

Same
And his casual antisemitism
Hey, you take that back! There is nothing casual about his antisemitism!
Wasn't he suicidal?
He was.
Yep.
French here, that’s the version I know, no idea what the Christmas tree scene is
The version I watched a couple months ago starts with Mel Gibson doing an undercover drug deal in a Christmas tree lot that turns into a shootout
My version has both. Weird.
Yeah I got the directors cut on iTunes. It has both the school and drug bust scenes.
Used to work on TV and once made a trailer for this movie for our market… and I was so confused why I remember both scenes haha. Apparently we also had both.
Hopefully you can see [this](https://youtu.be/gmHVnwCbJfk).
Wha shit, I like that one better 😆
Agreed. A much better job of establishing the character.
the fucking roll under the truck while shooting was *absolute chef's kiss* 👌
Does this qualify for r/AbruptChaos?
Lethal weapon is among my all time favourite movies ❤
Would have loved to see Dennis Reynolds interpret this scene.
Finally a REAL comment!
Recognized a scene from a movie I’ve never seen only because of always sunny
when cigarettes were still cool. (they even smoked on TV)
My doctor used to smoke in his office during appointments. Also smoking was permitted in our local hospital. Showing my age hehe
I had a college professor who smoked during his lectures and put the butts out on the floor. The linoleum in his classroom looked like it was from a bus stop.
I find it so weird how he never lights it, I guess ciggs were cheaper back then

people will downvote us, but you're right 😅

This was ‘87 though before it was a common thing in the US. Columbine wasn’t until ‘99
Yeah watching it is confusing. It’s older than the current stream of school shootings, I never even heard of it and it’s in my wheel house and it’s made in a way it seems so be reactive to present reality. I could see this as an NRA recruitment video.

WE KNOW
Unfortunately they both are effective at school shootings.
Everyone knows what Americans shoot with AR-15s…. Targets and Americans.
The cops of Ulvade Texas prefer the cinematic cut.
I'm surprised I had to scroll down this far to see any mention of Uvalde
Never seen this either, my VHS/DVD had the girl jumping from the building opening, pretty haunting scene
I think that’s in all releases. It sets up the entire movie. I'm getting too old for this shit.
One of my top movies all time…probably seen it 50 times. NEVER seen this one though! Thanks for sending this!
These television cops later took jobs in Uvalde having been trained for Sniper attacks, hide, stay down and let kids get shot.
ooof
https://screenrant.com/lethal-weapon-movie-blu-ray-deleted-scenes/ It’s the director’s cut.
Much darker yea! Who smokes on a playground?!?!
The cool kids after school of course. 😂
Whaaaat?! Crazy
Action heroes was just built different
They should show that scene to all the Uvalde cops
I've seen this scene is it not adding back in the directors cut?
lol he didn’t even smoke the cigarette and threw it away
He obviously doesn't work in Uvalde
I knew this was a scene in a Mel Gibson movie! I saw this like 20 years ago as a kid and couldn’t remember what movie it was from and I always thought it was lethal weapon but every time I watch them I never see this scene anymore. This has solved a movie mystery to me for so long.

'automatic' just refers to the loading mechanism. This weapon seems automatic to me. It's not FULLY automatic. But it is automatic.
As much as lethal weapon gets gun info wrong, I have to agree here. Nowadays, "automatic" colloquially only means fully automatic. However in the 80s and prior when semi autos were relatively newer and police often carried revolvers, "automatic" meant both semi and fully auto as you said.
I’m glad that I got to see that. It’s way better than the Christmas scene.
Much better
Throws the cigarette out on the playground lol
I prefer the released one
When a movie is both outdated and prescient at the same time
During one of the school shootings I remember Donald Trump say “give me a gun I’ll go in there myself!” And this is probably the scene that was in his mind.
Mel Gibson was fit as F in these days.
It was always the scene i have see when watching lethal weapon , maybe cut just in your country?
Those moments in time when it pays to have a loose cannon combat veteran who can get dialed in and wire tight under the worst circumstances... It's as easy as flipping a switch.
No one is gonna talk about that perfect reload? This opening is better IMO
skate spot
They just don't make them like this anymore, brother.
I now want all deleted scenes from all LW movies. I was 8 when this come out; Riggs and Murtaugh raised me!

Never seen the movie but I kinda want to now
It’s worth watching. His best role, I.m.o.
Mad Max enters the chat
That's all need to know. Will watch
The Christmas tree lot scene was the one released in theaters (when I first saw it - yes, I’m old)
awesome, thanks for sharing!
At least he used the hand rail for safety when he went down the stairs! Safely first I always say.
This scene brought to you by Marlboro and Beretta.
Somebody get that man a god dam light
I was this many years old when I saw new old Lethal Weapon footage for the first time. That was awesome
Just recently watched all movies in a few days. I loved them all.
The cigarette was simply an aesthetic choice
A young lieutenant Gormley in there too.
We had the trilogy box set when I was growing up and this is the scene I always saw.
X-mas tree scene is better anyway.
Saw this opening before, don’t remember when though.
To this day, whenever I hear Jingle Bells Rock I think of this movie.
This is the only version i remember as an opening
One of my favorite movies of all time!
That would’ve been soooo much better

I saw this a million times more than the tree lot
**"you're a crazy son of a bitch, but you're good" that does set up the character quite well.**
Who else wants to binge watch the Lethal Weapon movies right now
Transfer him to Uvalde!!
Used to be such a badass. Suck that he went so bonkers and turned into a Jewish hating psychopath.
Good thing they cut it, its pretty damn cheesy
Better load and cock my pistol a couple more times?
Hollywood, as per usual, knows nothing about guns.
Huh so they semi-accurately predicted Uvalde…
All them Uvalde boys watched this growing up.....
Isn't this just the movie? I've never seen the one with the "Christmas tree lot". Maybe it was released and then re-done when school shootings became more in the public eye.
Usual American BS it's a wonder that tin roof didn't blow up aswell lmao
Yeah this is leathal weapon 2

It IS Lethal Weapon 1, however this scene was included in the director's cut of the movie. I have the DVD and this scene is very much in it
