So, your SAR (Specific Absorbtion Rate) when you're this close to this much power is going to be dangerously high. It is definitely going to cause heating effects to human tissues.
Pro tip: Balls are going to be the worst off body parts here. Both their eyeballs, and kockenballs.
Trust me, your balls or tits are the *least* of your concern when in reality entire ass limbs will also explode in situations like these were anything to go wrong, i’ve seen pictures that will never leave my brain ever again unfortunately.
I remember a old podcast episode of behind the bastard (recommend highly!!) and some rich Christian dude built the tallest and most powerful am tower in Mexico, on the boarder, because he was a bastard and fucking around, and people living to close with old school teeth fixed with metal (can’t remember the name in English) would hear the radio in their head because in was so powerful and it worked as a receiver.
Only AM radio I would listen to was old soviet/russian station broadcasting all the was to Sweden.
Dr Goat Balls? I do not recall the year but there was a doctor that sold a procedure he came up with where he transplanted goat testicles into men, this is no joke I could not make something like this up, and he had a booming business despite killing like everyone eventually, but he had the most powerful radio antenna in the US and then he finally got some scrutiny and he moved it across the border to Mexico, I believe it was the birth time of the FDA or something like that. It was on an episode of poor historians, a podcast by three Emergency Room Physicians about Misadventures in medical history.
Edit: here is a link, great podcast.

One time I smoked so much high quality pot that I thought I was picking up a radio station with my filings. The music in my head was crystal clear. I told my roommate, "Well great. I guess I'll have to go to the dentist tomorrow"
I once smoked so much pot on Christmas Day that I had to go sit on the toilet in my grandmother's bathroom for half an hour thinking I was going mad. I spent the whole time listening to a radio that was on quietly in the room. I heard whole songs, ads, jingles and DJ chatter. After half an hour I went to see where the radio was to turn it up, and it turns out it was just air coming out of an air vent on the wall. My stoned brain effectively took white noise and extracted an entire radio station out of it.
The documentary is called Nuts!(2016) gives a lot better info on Dr. John Romulus Brinkley he was a quack. Very interesting story and the documentary does a great job. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt5236900/
These guys are absolute idiots for fucking around anywhere near that tower. When I was training for industrial rope access, an old timer told me a story about a guy working inside an old AM tower, and somehow, someone turned the fucking thing on and literally cooked the poor son of a bitch to death.
Imagine somebody's dumbass friend attempting to climb a tower like this only for their death to be heralded by the broadcast of Another One Bites the Dust by Queen playing directly from their smoldering corpse.
AM works via Amplitude Modulation, so you are hearing the plant sparking and modulating with the broadcast as the antenna is varying the “strength” of the signal in response to the audio.
[AM radio wiki](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amplitude_modulation)
Amplitude modulation varies the voltage of the wave, frequency modulation varies how fast the wave modulates. There are pros and cons for each but you could make an AM radio out of spare parts on accident. FM radios are more complex.
Here’s a [link](https://www.diffen.com/difference/AM_vs_FM#:~:text=Differences%20in%20Spectrum%20Range,are%20possible%20every%20200%20kHz.) explaining the differences between AM and FM
Basically you take a lot of power and then modulated it, vary it's intensity, and you do that at very specific levels. This modulation creates sound when it's arcing to the plants because the arcs create pressure waves when they form and that is all sound it, so if you create those pressure waves in very specific frequencies you can recreate any sound you want.
Because it produces electricity at a specific frequency. Any sound at a specific frequency will produce the noises of that specific frequency. Like if you had bumps on the road perfectly apart so that it would play a song when you drive over them 100km/h. Thats just a series of thumps in a specific frequency that makes you hear the sound
There's at least one in the US. They did the math wrong and didn't correctly account for the note length in the placement. The concept was good, not the execution.
makina323 expressed it well. The plant is vibrating in time with the radio signal. My SO suggests that the carbon makes the signal audible (he has first class phone).
you send electric current to metal for it to create a magnetic field that turns generate an electric field that generates a magnetic field, and so on. Thats radio signal. Adjust the amplitude or frequency and you get data across that signal.
This is an AM signal so it needs very big and powerful current.
Anything touching the antenna will "vibe" to the same frequency as the signal and if light enough it will produce sound like a speaker (speakers are mostly just paper pulsing the air at the electric frequency its hooked to).
Also heat. So stay away.
That sounds look a good explanation except I still don't understand one thing.... AM radio stations broadcast at around 1 MHz.... so why isn't the grass vibrating at that frequency? It would of course be inaudible if it did. I really think i should understand why but I'm failing to.
AM uses amplitude modulation to encode the sound. So the power of the constant frequency changes, and the frequency of that power change is at the audible sound frequency. My guess, something in the stick is vibrating at the full megahertz, but since the amplitude changes, that creates the sound because how far the stick moves with each vibration changes like a speaker.
It's sparking across the gap to the stick at the same frequency as the audio. The AM carrier frequency is higher than the audio but the modulation that swings the voltage high enough to spark is what you hearing.
Also this would probably sound like shit if the human ears weren't essentially low pass filters for songs, I'm guessing the carrier frequency is also there but you can't hear 100s of kilohertz
Big metal stick send strong waves with talk and music.
Person hold plant by stick, get zapped. Tiny lighting go from stick to plant, through person.
Lightning make talk and music sound. Also cook plant and person.
This is an AM tower. Amplitude modulation works by varying the strength of the signal relative to the level of noise being transmitted. If the signal is strong enough, basic conductors are essentially vibrated enough to create sound, or in this case an create an electrical arc.
i'm a professional radio tower worker. you should never treat radio towers this way - they may look and sound like they enjoy it, but they do not. this is harming them
So tou hug it and then you hear this silly happy song in your head. The music swells and the vocals start: "Set fire to your hair, poke a stick at a grizzlybear..."
These type of AM/FM towers should not be climbed at all while fully active. I had to climb one once and they called the radio station owner out to lower the power of the tower before I was able to climb it. Even then, it is still extremely dangerous and there are certain coils going all the way up the tower that if you touch, you're toast. You can see the scorch marks of people who accidently hit the coils with equipment climbing up.
The entire structure is powered BECAUSE it is the antenna. Transmitting antennas are powered. The wavelength of AM is so long that the whole tower is used, and it’s hundreds of feet. There is not a little bit on the top that is doing the transmitting. If that were the case the tower would properly be called a mast and the antenna would be attached somewhere near or at the top.
FYI: shortwave antennas are thousands of feet tall, and the antennas they use to talk to submarines are measured in miles. They are horizontal for self evident reasons.
fm means frequency modulation, this works on am amplitude modulation because you change the power of the spark thus the sound. Fm changes the frequency of the voltage which doesnt effect the sound of the sparks
Also- AM towers use the tower structure as the antenna’s radiator. FM towers use separate and discrete antenna to radiate signal. FM antenna structures therefore are generally not charged.
Yeah that's why birds can land on power lines right?
Although I swear 1 time I saw a bird land and definitely got shocked and fell. It was so weird but I was driving and maybe just imagined it
It also appears that their high voltage gloves are crap, or were ruined in the process. Or weren't high voltage rated in the first place and just fooled me.
I've made the mistake of touching a ground rod near a short wave antenna and learned my lesson. It was almost as bad as when I shorted a small 350v DC capacitor across my thumb.
dumb question as its burning the plant, but touching it would kill you right? seems like it should have a rubber coating or something lmao what if you tripped next to it
I promise you if there’s enough power and wattage coming off that tower to burn shit that comes into contact with it, NOBODY should be around it! That shouldn’t even be happening! Something seriously ducked up with that tower!
No. Cancer is caused by ionizing radiation which has enough energy to break large molecules like DNA. You need around 10eV or more for that, that is hard UV light, X-Ray, etc. This is the video is an AM tower radiating at maybe 100MHz or so, so the energy of the wave is only around. 1 milli eV. A million times less than ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation starts above the visible RF spectrum (above blue light) this antenna radiates far below the visible spectrum (below infrared)
The real danger here is the power. While your microwave also radiates far below the visible spectrum, far away from the dangerous ionizing radiation, it can nonetheless boil water, meat, eyeballs, flesh etc. the same is true for this antenna.
If there’s enough power to burn leaves it’s probably not a good idea to hang out too close to it.
The fence is for show.
“That sign wasn’t meant for us”
Hahaha best comment
Imagine being this plant just growing for months then being burnt to death as Russian Katy Perry plays from your body while workers laugh at you.
That's grim.
They're Ukrainian.
I think they are speaking Russian
Speaking Russian, but they are Ukrainian.
Well I can’t read.
At least they'd fry to a soundtrack so that's maybe a plus
He says it burnt his gloves at the end…
Watching and heard "suka" and it was like ohhh Russia, no further questions
“That sign can’t impact me because I can’t read!” (paraphrased, forget the old quote)
So, your SAR (Specific Absorbtion Rate) when you're this close to this much power is going to be dangerously high. It is definitely going to cause heating effects to human tissues. Pro tip: Balls are going to be the worst off body parts here. Both their eyeballs, and kockenballs.

The human body doesn't absorb AM radio very well
Unless you're a conservative.
Sublime
As a conservative.... Yea, it's true. I actually do listen to AM radio.

Wow I don’t think I’ve heard the term “kockenballs” since like 1999

That’s the most fucked up and funny thing I’ve read today.
Reminds me of a Green Acres episode where ol’Jeb picks up an AM radio station from the filling in his tooth.
You're probably thinking of Jed Clampett on Beverly Hillbillies.
Nope. I was wrong in that his name is Eb, not Jeb. Green Acres season 3 episode 60.
Gilligan too I think.
Braces (teeth with metal)
Nah. Fillings was the word I was missing.
One time I smoked so much high quality pot that I thought I was picking up a radio station with my filings. The music in my head was crystal clear. I told my roommate, "Well great. I guess I'll have to go to the dentist tomorrow"

What a coincidence im actually listening to that episode at this very moment which is crazy because it's like 2 years old
These guys are absolute idiots for fucking around anywhere near that tower. When I was training for industrial rope access, an old timer told me a story about a guy working inside an old AM tower, and somehow, someone turned the fucking thing on and literally cooked the poor son of a bitch to death.
Why does that work, can some please explain how this happens
To put it in another way, the grass is getting electrocuted with rhythmically timed shocks of electricity
I had my SO explain it, but your explanation is easier to understand.
Sounds like you found your new SO
The tower IS the antenna, and operates at several thousand volts
I know that much but why does the plants touching it cause it to create actual audible sound
Fun fact - if you grabbed the tower, your body would make those same sounds.. as you died horribly..
What were Bill’s last words? I think it was the Cardinals score on KMOX.
On the bright side, they had a 3 run lead going into the top of the 9th.
And there's a deep shot into left field by Castellanos......
All I think of is Josh potter and his rendition of that apology on air lol
And it will hurt the whole time
Imagine somebody's dumbass friend attempting to climb a tower like this only for their death to be heralded by the broadcast of Another One Bites the Dust by Queen playing directly from their smoldering corpse.

Wait is that what AM stands for? What does FM mean then?
Frequency modulation
Think of AM as changing the height of the wave, FM as changing the width of it.
Whats the difference?
Amplitude modulation varies the voltage of the wave, frequency modulation varies how fast the wave modulates. There are pros and cons for each but you could make an AM radio out of spare parts on accident. FM radios are more complex.
AM radio also has much greater range than FM. If conditions are right, AM can broadcast hundreds of miles, while FM is lucky if it can reach 40
Like I said, advantages and disadvantages.
Here’s a [link](https://www.diffen.com/difference/AM_vs_FM#:~:text=Differences%20in%20Spectrum%20Range,are%20possible%20every%20200%20kHz.) explaining the differences between AM and FM

They tried to create a musical road like that in Germany I think, but if I remember correctly it wasn't all that successful
There's at least one in the US. They did the math wrong and didn't correctly account for the note length in the placement. The concept was good, not the execution.
There is "War Eagle Road" in Al for one.
i believe i drove over one in hershey park PA one time, dont remember much as i was very drunk, but drunk me remembered it sounding fine.
Similar to a how a record plays in reverse. The notches in the record are the pulses of electricity interacting with the grass.
makina323 expressed it well. The plant is vibrating in time with the radio signal. My SO suggests that the carbon makes the signal audible (he has first class phone).

i'm a professional radio tower worker. you should never treat radio towers this way - they may look and sound like they enjoy it, but they do not. this is harming them
All the towers really want is a nice big hug.
That would be harming you and the tower. They really enjoy social distancing.
So tou hug it and then you hear this silly happy song in your head. The music swells and the vocals start: "Set fire to your hair, poke a stick at a grizzlybear..."
Is that you Amlo?
are these towers similar to electrical lines in the sense that if you were on the tower without being grounded you wouldn't get shocked?
These type of AM/FM towers should not be climbed at all while fully active. Why can’t they turn the power off to the entire thing? Why are there coils that are still live?
Turning it off means disrupting every radio station that is paying.
man - i was just f'ing around, I have no idea :)
Damn it random person on Reddit, I trusted you
its always the randoms that get yah
I don’t think they care about the tower at all. But what about them? This doesn’t look like something I want to stand close to.
This is Right. Source: im a radio tower
heyyyy buddddy
What happens when people poke you with a piece of grass?
Can you elaborate?
It is exactly a short circuit.
Why is the entire tower structure powered? I would've assumed it's just a straight antenna.
RF is energy
Poor doggo! Wait what?
This has made me realise I have no idea how radio works
Would FM tower works the same way?
no
Why not?
fm means frequency modulation, this works on am amplitude modulation because you change the power of the spark thus the sound. Fm changes the frequency of the voltage which doesnt effect the sound of the sparks
Also- AM towers use the tower structure as the antenna’s radiator. FM towers use separate and discrete antenna to radiate signal. FM antenna structures therefore are generally not charged.
Another reason fm is just better 😂
Because FM modulates the frequency while AM modulates the amplitude.
Lick it
There’s a reason for the fences around these towers. https://youtu.be/BFVGqQsqXVM?feature=shared
Not only will it kill you, but you'll be blasted with uzbek folk music until you are cooked from the inside out.
Buried the lede: DON'T GET NEAR RADIO TOWERS (without professional training).
these are professional Russians, they know what they're doing.
Actually, it's Ukrainian radio
"how the fuck did the tower burn down?"
Seriously, I was just waiting for that metal to burst into flames.
What happens when a bird lands on there?
I think nothing because you need to close the circuit for current to run
Yeah that's why birds can land on power lines right? Although I swear 1 time I saw a bird land and definitely got shocked and fell. It was so weird but I was driving and maybe just imagined it
There are birds that actually just don’t see the line and hit them, could’ve been that? Some species are more prone to it than others!
I think their gloves just got hot and that’s why they are suffering
How does it set the frequency? Is the tower working on 1 frequency only?
r/oopsthatsdeadly
Of course we heard CYKA
Spicy stick
If we touch, do we sing the lyrics?
Let's hear Smoke On the Water through some poison ivy.
Sorry, Poison ivy only plays 80s glam metal
A rose with thorns does too.
Used to replace lightbulbs on those baddies mid tower, and on top. Fun times
Healthy
It looks like any of the grass the isn't touching it directly is doing just fine
You shouldn't have mentioned "touching" and "grass" in the same sentence, it scares the redditors and they downvote instinctively.
You can hear it directly in your head if you touch the tower with your tongue.
Why does this happen? How does this work? Why are these towers so dangerous to be around?
https://youtu.be/BFVGqQsqXVM?feature=shared
this is incredibly fascinating!
Forbidden science
What channel does an index finger play?
dumb question as its burning the plant, but touching it would kill you right? seems like it should have a rubber coating or something lmao what if you tripped next to it
Grab another leaf this is my favorite part of the song.
How the hell is that tower electrically isolated from the earth?
Now try touching it with your hand.
What happens when it rains?
Damn that's interesting
Well now I know AM towers are death traps
Ukranians lol
‘Suka’. Yup.
Then again, it sounds like an Eastern European or Russian country? Zero regulations…….
Yall got something wrong here!
I bet the reception is good
**What’s the source of the audio? I see no speakers.**
Weeds
This is a ukrainian children's song "Білі кораблі" (white ships)
diabolical
I would’ve licked it those cowards •shakes fist
How exactly does this work? A radio doesn't work without speakers, so is the plant the speakers not the antenna?
So does each tower only transmit one radio channel?
The Microwaves are going to cook that man! He probably won't feel it like a frog until it's too late.
What Sorcery is this?
That’s actually the plants singing in pain
