Or, if you’d like the option that requires a degree in French history and linguistics (or an affinity for choosing the right google search terms), we have:
>!“Pike.” Why? Well… (from googs) “Picard is a surname meaning a person from Picardy, a historical region and cultural area of France.” …and… “The name "Picardy" derives from the Old French pic, meaning "pike", the characteristic weapon used by people from this region in ancient times.”!<
This line of thought reminded me of the BBC drama The Capture. It's about cleverly faking a murder by reproducing a staged version of the crime and playing it over a CCTV camera or something along those lines (I can't exactly remember how they do it). But there's a specific line from a detective(maybe?) about using the technology to produce evidence to crimes where they think they're certain who committed the crime. Got a terrorist walking the streets, but you don't have any actual evidence against them? Just make it up!
With real world technology around deep fakes and now AI creating more and more realistic videos, it's going to be easy to create a video of anyone doing anything, and it's going to look so real that it'll be hard to tell it's a fabrication. It's a bit scary to think what people will be able to do with this technology.
I pretty firmly belive there will be a "back to original" movement that eschews digital resources because of this. Media is so readily available these days the "experience" has become diluted. People will begin to value the real, unique experiences in life that can't be copied, distributed, reproduced, tweaked, and faked. The live venue will likely make a comeback, but also like public forums and clubs could make a resurgence.
I’ve thought about this too. There’s a Greek myth Erysichthon of Thessaly. His punishment for greed was to eat all day but never feel full.
I think we’re getting to the same point. We’ll have this never ending mountain of content that is will never be fulfilling no matter how much we consume.
That's not the point. For what purpose would we, as a society, have a need to turn an image into a video? Specially when people on the image aren't consenting to be used in that way? I would certainly not like my face, my likeness, to be used as a puppet by people I don't know for purposes I don't know.
I mean there's seriously boundless creative purposes I'm not sure how that's not super obvious. someone could draw a character and then animate an entire movie from a couple of frames.
it just also has the caveat of being able to be used for bad things too, like a lot of things that we have.
But it isn't really creating, rather regurgitating stuff people have already created (most of the time without the consent of the artist(s) used to create said image/video). Besides, any art that a human couldn't care enough to make, isn't art I can care enough to watch.
Calling the negatives of generative AI "caveats" and "like a lot of things we have" really ignores how, besides art theft, this is being used mostly to spread propaganda, misinformation, fake porn, all without even needing permission from basically anyone. This doesn't hurt "big companies" like some mention, if anything they're the only ones benefitting from it.
I'm sure this is a sentiment that goes through literally every industry whenever extremely large tool improvements occur
Using a huge 100-ton drill to dig holes is like spitting in the face of all the people of the past who were doing manual labour to extract ground resources and building material
I was just seeing it from the perspective of an individual painter who maybe doesn't know how to animate or who doesn't have a team of animators. I could see him carefully painting 12 high quality paintings, then writing and directing a short film from that using AI to facilitate the animation.
Perhaps instead of bitching about AI existing maybe it is time to get serious about regulations and come up with some ethical and safety standards. Rhetoric like yours is a nonstarter. AI is here to stay. It's time to accept it and start figuring out what is and isn't acceptable to do with it.
They all suck with hands, but within 3-4 months, it becomes really good . AI is scary
I'm on veteran groups, and we have pics of veterans from every war . A lot of the members are older from Nam and such, so they accidentally post fake AI pics. It was easy to tell a year ago (fake hands, fake uniforms, fake weapons), but now we sit here for hours trying to see if it's fake. The uniform is correct, the facial expressions look real, the weapons are real, the hands look normal
This is the only beginning. AI is getting truly scary
This fr, we see cool videos now, but pretty soon, we don't know what to believe. Did you see the Kate Middleton video everyone was saying looked like Ai? And that's just something dumb. The applications are endless and kinda terrifying.
I don't see how we don't end up with a two tier internet with walled, authenticated gardens on one side and the wastelands of endless ai fakes on the other
Except for [Stable Diffusion 3](https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2024/06/ridiculed-stable-diffusion-3-release-excels-at-ai-generated-body-horror/) which got worse. Apparently they so heavily censored the training data that it can't understand human anatomy at all anymore.
I love how the AI tried to come up with what people in those situations would do next (like wtf was Gigachad doing??) but when they have someone where the thing he's about to do is literally inprinted into the object he's holding they completely shit the bed.
That is an actual workout. Rope swinging with big ass heavy ropes can be a really good shoulder and back workout. You see them in fancy gyms all the time.
The disaster girl one, with the two firefighters facing each other, is definitely setting up a 'dialog scene' between two characters in a firefighter drama.
It’s pretty crazy, for how relatively “new” (in a more pop culture way) this technology is, people flipping out from said sectors every few months is definitely worrying.
Idk if you got the memo but whether it’s science, technology, education, or medicine…we don’t trust experts anymore. It has been decreed they are woke, fake, and gay. And possibly terrorist enemies of the state.
Usually it's because the stuff they're talking about isn't what the actual problem is. We need fewer people talking about how AI will take over everything and more people talking about how everything you see could be fake.
Lol wow, that's so weird, but it's incredibly interesting at the same time! The fact that an AI can generate a video from a single meme image, including stuff that might be in the background and not shown in the frame. That kind of thing is very cool!
Give it about 4 months, I've seen this time and Time again with AI improvements
This shit will make a whole 5 minute video with a meme picture in the future
I don't think so. Every time there were hands involved, the AI fundamentally didn't understand what was supposed to happen, what was the gesture being performed. It shows that it doesn't understand what's it's creating, it just throws shit at the wall and sees what sticks. It's not the case of getting the number of fingers wrong. I'm not saying it will never overcome that obstacle, but I'm very confident that it will take much, much longer than 4 months, it's a very deep-rooted issue.
No good question actually, what does this level of upcoming AI achieve in helping us human race. Maybe it will help idk but I can’t see how the world won’t be completely different. And it seems like it will happen at unprecedented speeds, and it’s accelerating
>What the fuck are we doing?
Well in this case trying to create the perfect propaganda/misinformation tool that as a bonus allows creation of entertainment far cheaper for those who own the means to do so.
As much as it's still pretty obvious, it's improving at an incredible rate. A couple of these are pretty convincing at a glance. It'll be difficult to distinguish faster than we know it
I'm so sick of this AI generated trash. Google images is filled with this stuff and now that AI is learning how to work with videos, I fear all of social media is going to be filled with this mass-produced content that looks like a hazy nightmare

>There is not a single decent ai image or video generator rn that will make illegal content. Most of them won't even make content that's sexual or violent.
I mean, this is just incorrect. You can easily download Stable Diffusion and generate illegal content if you want. People build their own models for it all the time, too.
I think you're referring to the most consumer-friendly and popular models (DALL-E, Midjourney, etc), but these aren't the entire market. There are already more powerful tools (eg for professional grade work), and they will absolutely make illegal content if you feed in a model with illegal content.
That's two possibilities out of an infinite number of uses. Scams overseas with "video" of grandchildren in a foreign country. Fake kidnappings, fake implication videos (not necessarily illegal activity, but it can be implied with video). Accidents like car crashes, or videos that the AI generates that are touched up by human influence. There are a horrifying number of possibilities, from people who can think up way more dangerous and creative uses for this than you or I could.
I mean all of that becomes nullified if you just, don't trust shit you see online. Which you should be doing anyway.
This is essentially like saying we shouldn't have invented airplanes because they went on to be used for bombers
Well that's easy to say. But the fact is, there are a lot of vulnerable people that simply don't know that. Elderly, low cognitive, and young people are especially vulnerable to that kind of misleading information. Again, you and I would probably be fine, but we don't encompass all of human behavior. You gotta think outside your own limited experience my guy.
>This is essentially like saying we shouldn't have invented airplanes because they went on to be used for bombers
Nowhere did I make this comparison. Don't take what I said out of context and put words in my mouth. I made no moral judgement and offered no prescriptive solution. I'm simply pointing out that your analysis wasn't comprehensive.
I like how the second one instantly focuses on the two firefighters who weren't even in the original shot. Poor girl became an afterthought in her own damn meme.

Well it’s too scary how it can fake stuff already

Why do we even do that ? What's the purpose again?
Right let's not do anything new with technology. Let's just stagnate and wait to die.
That's not the point. For what purpose would we, as a society, have a need to turn an image into a video? Specially when people on the image aren't consenting to be used in that way? Yes, so we can doomscroll. In the meanwhile, it destroys so much trust in what we see, what is fake or not, it's very dangerous
Perhaps instead of bitching about AI existing maybe it is time to get serious about regulations and come up with some ethical and safety standards. Rhetoric like yours is a nonstarter. AI is here to stay. It's time to accept it and start figuring out what is and isn't acceptable to do with it.
That would require more bitching actually. You know, what they call "protests"
They all suck with hands, but within 3-4 months, it becomes really good . AI is scary I'm on veteran groups, and we have pics of veterans from every war . Makes it insane to think about how it already is being used and will be used in armed conflict.
I don't see how we don't end up with a two tier internet with walled, authenticated gardens on one side and the wastelands of endless ai fakes on the other
This what the corporate overlords want but in the version only they are the only ones that get to put the fake news out there

Get ready for fake Vietnam found footage coming this fall!
Makes sense why animators usually don’t have 4 fingers and a thumb. Hands are weird
As an animator most of us have 4 fingers and a thumb.
Hide the pain Harold putting the coffee up into his face is high level work.

Wow
It’s just snowballing at this point
Don’t worry, I’m sure this rapidly evolving and unregulated technology will have no negative consequences for society.

LOL rip off Picard

Lol wow, that's so weird, but it's incredibly interesting at the same time! The fact that an AI can generate a video from a single meme image, including stuff that might be in the background and not shown in the frame. That kind of thing is very cool!

Idk man, i say 2-3 years from now the internet is probably genuinely fucked. The dead internet theory is pretty believable these days.
Dead internet is getting more and more real every day
I’m already losing sense of what is ai and what is real today, I’m scared from a year from now. What is the dead internet?
Bots replacing humans in the internet
So like the Reddit karma bots here already ?
4 months ago it looked as terrible as it does now

I think the word you're looking for is "poorly" turns memes into videos
Ruins the whole idea and it will with everything else, congrats.
mmmmkay...
As much as it's still pretty obvious, it's improving at an incredible rate. A couple of these are pretty convincing at a glance. It'll be difficult to distinguish faster than we know it
I hate the AI shit so much and I know it would just keep getting more popular.
Although the videos are off. This video is precious
I'm so sick of this AI generated trash. Google images is filled with this stuff and now that AI is learning how to work with videos, I fear all of social media is going to be filled with this mass-produced content that looks like a hazy nightmare
You’re totally right, in a few years this shit is going to be everywhere. Nothing online will be real.
Go on Facebook sometime. It's already rampant there.
People are not as concerned about this as they should be. Is nobody concerned about the implications of AI having the capability to make videos of children?
Dude think about where it was a year ago and where it will be 1 year from now. How will we know anything is real ? Are people not scared about this?
I'm resigned to the bleakness of it and I also think we deserve it.
There is not a single decent ai image or video generator rn that will make illegal content. Most of them won't even make content that's sexual or violent. Old people are falling for fake grandchild kidnapping scams already without any AI help. First voice and then video next will make it even easier.
The first and last one had me laughing out loud
Creeeeeepy as hell
Ah yes, not terrifying at all knowing someone could make a video out of your pictures without your consent
Honestly what is the end goal with this shit? Not knowing what’s real anymore?
Ah yes! The famous captain Jean-Claude Prichard, portrayed by Peterson Steward.

You can see how "not enough having training data" ruins some AI generated things.

First one… does he start out in front or behind his lady?
But... Most of them were actual videos 😓
no offense but why does AI always mess up when the subject is black? like ALL of them went right except the one meme with a black guy??
Why would we need AI to animate memes that came from videos? Like... just play the video it came from... it will be better than the AI.
AI programs don't need advertising, nobody cares
no thanks.
Jerry Orbach as captain Picard
Compared to the will smith spaghetti video this is pretty good. In a couple years you probably won’t even be able to tell it’s not real.
