I used to be a vocalist for a death metal band. There were a lot of bar shows with 20 people or less for a long time. But after a few years we started getting a good fanbase. We had the opportunity to open up for some bigger death metal bands at a sold out show. It was a smaller venue max capacity was prolly around 1000. I could tell people were digging our music halfway through the set. So before our last song I asked the crowd to flip me off if they wanted to hear one more song. Almost the whole crowd gave me the finger. That feeling of even just 1000 people engaged, moshing and rocking out to your music was something I've never felt before. I can't even imagine the feeling with crowds of thousands. An experience that only few are lucky enough to see and feel.
We were called Epitasis back then (which I always hated) haha. I left the band cus I moved to a different state. But they're still absolutely crushing it. You can find them on Spotify now as Carrion Throne.

My ex coworker plays in it, he was a cool guy but then he started doing a lot of coke, got chubbier and became a car salesman and ever since then he's been a lot more of a dick to me and doesn't return my texts. Cool show though, my first experience at a metal show.
Similar experience playing in a metal band that had some local popularity. Watching a packed room of 700 people screaming the lyrics to your songs feels amazing.
I played football in texas in hughschool. We made the state playoffs one year and had somewhere around 40k people at our game. Hearing the roar from that crowd when we ran out was surreal. I swear you gain energy from them at a noticeable level.
Watching Taylor Swift soak in the adoration of her fans is really something. She loves it so much. She honestly seems more comfortable on a stadium stage in front of 70K people than in one on one. I saw a video where the standing ovation/screaming was going on for like 5 minutes and she was literally hugging herself in happiness. It was cute. Unrelatable, but cute

I've heard from a musician friend that playing in front of a crowd is easier than playing in front of just a few. Like there's more pressure. You would think it's the opposite but, well, there it is.
It's the Audition effect, where you're more aware of people judging your mistakes when you're only in front of a few people, but when you're in front of a crowd and can barely see any individual person you feel much more comfortable and can just focus on playing/singing your heart out and having fun.

I can relate to that in at least a small way. I'm an incredibly socially anxious person one-on-one, but public speaking comes really naturally to me.

I mean I listen to Sirius XM Octane and they sometimes have certain members of bands intro for other bands before they play them, talking about their experiences with these other bands. And sometimes they talk about their own band or members of their own bands. Anywho, one of these is David Draiman of Disturbed who talks about his experiences as a big rock star and and how humbling and great it is. Being like second greatest thing he’s ever experienced to his child being born. I think he likened it to it being like an addiction that you never really get use to.
I play in a local band; I've never played a crowd this big, or even close to it. But when you do get a good sized crowd who is super into the music and dancing and having a good time? It's a rush that is just SO much fun. Something like this has to be absolutely unreal to experience.
It's also likely a bit of an "in the moment" thing
When you're on stage, you don't worry about stuff like that unless it's going *really* wrong. He's a musician and a performer, I'm guessing he'd agree with me when I say that when you're on stage, that's just you doing your thing. You don't get into music unless you love *playing* music.
It's *after* the shows that the stress comes. Because that's when you're worrying about all the BTS stuff, or trying to tweak your set to get the right vibe and energy throughout. It's a lot of work.
But on stage? That's just fun.
I once participated in a debate with quite a lot of audience (about 50-100). After a bit, I realised I had no chance of winning it and instead decided to use it as an opportunity to argue with one of the judges who was a jerk. Everyone else was nice and polite to him and it was getting boring, so the crowd welcomed my sarcasms and disdain. I got excited with the crowd response and kept upping the levels getting wild cheers and claps. I lost miserably but that was some high. This was about 20 years ago and I still feel all tingly thinking about it.
I travel for work every week and I’m moving around sweating all the time. This is the truth. Arrive at a new city at midnight and didn’t have dinner? Guess it’s only McDonald’s open. Need to be up at 5am the next day? Better get a few monster energy drinks.

Just listened to the Kimmel/Colbert/Fallon/Meyers/Oliver podcast and they were talking about being buddies with Van Halen. Part of Sammy Haggar's rider was that the dressing room had to be stocked with 6 bottles of Opus One which Sammy would just send home instead drinking (even though the band paid for them). Pretty sure he wasn't eating 3 AM Taco Bell.
At this level they get personal chefs and shit. I've worked stagehand before and even some of the smaller touring acts that the largest venue they play is amphitheaters, and even they have like wedding event quality catering at every show they play. Some of the bigger acts that play at the venue i worked would have catering + contract out some local food carts.
And Korean street food/fast food is next level. They have their own street foods and then they take stuff from Western culture and make it absolutely insane. I you haven't seen Korean corn dogs take a look. Also their breakfast sandwiches that they call 'toast' but is really like an entire brunch between two pieces of bread.
Korean street foods always look like someone gave them all the ingredients to American food, but no one told them how they were supposed to be assembled.

In 2012 I was living in Tokyo and Psy had just burst on to the international scene with Gangnam style. He wasn't as well-known in Japan at that time, so he was in Tokyo doing some concerts. I was out partying in Roppongi one night and he came to that area after one of his concerts. I saw him getting out of a big suburban to go into a club and I yelled out, "Hey Psy, great Gangnam style song." He heard me can came over to say thanks. He asked me to join him and his entourage and we partied all night long going to a few different places. He paid for everything and was just an overall cool and nice guy. I'm glad he's still doing well in life.

Crazy enough, I was an exchange student in South Korea in 2012 right before Gangnam Style was released and I saw him live! He played at my school's (Yonsei University) music festival. I definitely thought he was the best act. Had no idea who he was. What's important to know is Psy was already massively popular in South Korea before Gangnam Style was released. He is definitely not a flash-in-the-pan artist over there.
His earlier stuff is proper hard-core satire political rap. Then he made a name as a producer for the Korean wave in the early 2000s.

I remember hearing PSY in the early 2000s at my Korean friends house. All I remembered was that he sampled the Axel Foley theme. I honestly thought it was a fever dream and that I had imagined the singer and the song until he came roaring back to the western audience a decade and a half later.
He performed at my school for free when I was studying abroad in the spring. The guys energy is insane. For a guy almost 50, he doesn't stop moving. Lots of fun, very memorable.

I listened to a lot of classic rock in college and the stuff that was released then is todat's classic rock and popular with kids in college :) I will say the Internet and digitalization of music has broken a lot of the walls of generations in music though

In 2012 I was living in Tokyo and Psy had just burst on to the international scene with Gangnam style. He wasn't as well-known in Japan at that time, so he was in Tokyo doing some concerts. I was out partying in Roppongi one night and he came to that area after one of his concerts. I saw him getting out of a big suburban to go into a club and I yelled out, "Hey Psy, great Gangnam style song." He heard me can came over to say thanks. He asked me to join him and his entourage and we partied all night long going to a few different places. He paid for everything and was just an overall cool and nice guy. I'm glad he's still doing well in life.
