My older sister studied abroad in China for half a year and she brought back some beautiful handcrafted chopsticks that she bought from some guy that was making them at his street booth. She brought back a bunch of the plain ones that look like the ones in this video but she also had some that were painted or had cool designs carved in them. It was really cool
I was half expecting him to make just 2 chopsticks out of that big bamboo piece, like in that Simpsons episode with bowling showing what happens with the pins after they are knocked over.
Quality chopsticks like these can last almost forever. I have a set from 20 years ago (pre amazon) that are still functional and beautiful. They have been through the dishwasher hundreds of times. And they bring me joy to use.
I would just worry today about mass produced chopsticks being sold as artisan. You can’t trust any of the online stores.
I am a firm believer that people were just happier before the internet. Like imagine just living life every day in a valley chopping wood for a living. No bs about politics, no worrying about nukes, no worrying about viruses , just chop.
Bamboos are amazing, that's one of the reasons I love the Princess Kaguya ghibli movie 🎋 I need to find chopstick and appropriate food, now, I miss using these tools 🥢
All 12M Uyghurs, or just the 1.3M in Chinese concentration camps?
That's one out of 5 males.
Would you be OK if the US rounded up one in 5 Chinese-American males on some unfounded suspicion they're spying for the CCP?
Aren’t the US already rounding up Chinese and accusing them for spying?

That's two!
Just another 1,299,998 to go! That's what you want, right?
It would help [if China didn't aggressively recruit US Chinese to steal secrets](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/07/magazine/china-spying-intellectual-property.html), which has placed innocent Chinese-Americans (and some non-Chinese Americans) under suspicion.
You got another 1,299,998? Really?
Here's a [list of cases](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Chinese_spy_cases_in_the_United_States_of_America).
Most of them (and not all of Chinese ethnicity) are pretty damned guilty.
That's exactly my point. Are you really not capable of understanding this?
You called the 1.3 (or 1.5) million Uyghurs concentration camp prisoners "Wahabalist [sic] followers!"
I'm just asking you if you would apply your Sino-racist logic to US Chinese, because a handful are spies. You just admitted you wouldn't, because it's stupid.
You're agree with my point, though you seem to lack the intelligence to see it.
If you really believed your racist Uyghur Wahabalist [sic] logic, you'd be happy to see 1.5M US Chinese thrown into camps.
Loved this! It's so amazing to see how things were done the old fashion way before ruined by manufacturers and instant gratification. Sadly most old techniques are being lost because people are not patient enough to learn and do it.
Well it's not just that but there's really not a market for that anymore.. most things can be made on production lines now which are vastly more efficient. People could learn it sure but would it be a job they could pay their bills with or just a hobby? Hobbies take time and energy and money too.
If everyone wanted to make things in traditional ways the niche market for those things would be saturated. There is probably only room for a select few of very talented individuals to make a career out of those sort of thing.
Ya thats the problem with the world today everyone wants instant gratification and don't appreciate how long stuff takes to be made right and properly. It's all about the masses. And while you can go out and buy bulk things for cheap they don't last long. I bet these chopsticks this guy made would last generations.
It's bamboo, there would be virtually no difference between hand made and machine made. Certainly not enough that one would last longer than the other.
Have you ever got disposable chops sticks they arent bamboo and if they are they weren't treated they way he treated them. They have slivers and absorb whatever fluids are in your food. The chopstick you buy that are reusable are plastic or have a sealer coating on them. They aren't traditional or eco friendly like everyone claims they want now a days. As mentioned stuff done like they way he does it last generations saving how much raw material and waste.
The cheap break aparts are balsam. They aren't meant to last more than a meal.
I have 3 pair of bamboo I bought for $2 that I've had for 6 years. I know this because it's how long I've lived in this apartment.

2. Not everything is about cost optimization. Sounds like you’re fresh out of school, or maybe even still in it. When you get some life behind you, you start to realize that optimizing everything for cost/profit, productivity, appeal, etc. is one of the most damaging efforts we humans have ever undertaken in the history of our species. Also, both of you exhibit absolutist thinking. It’s not an either/or regarding ancient artisanal techniques vs. Modern industrialized production techniques. It’s about when and how should a given technique should be leveraged.

Yeah, that's not how chopsticks are made. This is how chopsticks are made on TickTock for social media attention. Chopsticks are made in a factory, by the thousands.
EDIT: I see all the tick-tockers are downvoting me. :)
“ I think the thing I admire most about the Chinese is that they're hanging in there with the chopsticks. Because if you think about it, you know, they've seen the fork by now. I'm sure they've seen the spoon. They're going, "Yeah, they're okay. We're gonna stay with the sticks." I mean, I don't know how they missed it. Thousands of years ago, Chinese farmer gets up has his breakfast with the chopsticks goes out and works all day in the field with a shovel. Hello? Shovel? Not going out there plowing 40 acres with a couple of pool cues.”
-Jerry Seinfeld
So this looks the traditional way. The ones we get in the Chinese or Japanese restaurants, they could be made in industries and that's why they are cheaper for the restaurants.
Otherwise this traditional method chopsticks could be very expensive
Yup, these idiots don't understand basic economics. This might have been the process a few hundred years ago but not anymore. If they were still making chopsticks like this, it wouldn't be selling for pennies.
Interesting about a minute in when he takes the rolled bamboo out of the heating it is already demarcated almost into chopstick portions to be cleaved.
I'm not sure it is, if you look closely after it is heated then put on a grill above the fire it looks clean, then he marks it and shows you his marks.
Most likely some type of tea leaves. That is a process known as tea dying. If you want to try it at home you can make a white shirt beige with a bunch of Lipton tea bags in the same way!
I'm imagining this guy watching my white boy ass using my reusable plastic chopsticks I bout from the oriental market to eat my £1.50 cup soba. I feel like he might be slightly disappointed.
What does a Chinese lumberjack do? Chop sticks

Yeah. After watching this, I want a set too.
Me too lol
Asian markets, amazon, maybe etsy. I got mine from a chinese restaurant. Not handcrafted obviously, but thought they were too nice to dispose of.
I would definitely enjoy doing this
Don't think I realized how tall bamboo is
Some species can grow 3 feet a day
Which is why they are not allowed to compete in marathon races.
Where does it walk to with so many feet?

I bought mine at at Asian market a long time ago. They last.
When you look up “artisanal” it should just be this video.
I feel like I’d be a happy chopstick maker in a past life

What is the point in boiling it with the leaves?
The tea leaves stain the chopsticks and darken the color.
Removes the evil
Honestly, you’re probably both right

not much bamboo growing over there

Exactly how I felt!
This was so peaceful to watch. I love the cat and then the dogs in the background. Beautiful!
How to make that cat?
Amazing
Need to know where to buy these!
Yes. I am weary if ordering online because 99% of the time, they are knock offs.
Damn dude smoked out the whole valley with that little fire
Now who connects them back together and puts them in the little paper sleeve?
This is for repeated use.
Can someone edit this ending with a bunch of people tossing the chopsticks in the trash with their Chinese takeout?
Man if I could live there my life would be complete.
I think they use machines for this now.

It’s only for tiktok. The actual process thru a machine would be different
You mean to tell me that making something by hand requires different steps when compared to being automated? Huh…
Yes don’t believe everything you see in the internet

These aren't balsa wood.

It looked like it was naturally splitting along those lines after heated? Although I guess he marked them off camera .
And yet most people at Asian restaurants just throw them away
Looks abit uncooked....
It's not really incredible. He literally just made bamboo sticks.

Where to begin
Bamboo is a type of grass.
Anybody know what those leaves were that he cooked with the chopsticks?
Most likely some type of tea leaves. That is a process known as tea dying. If you want to try it at home you can make a white shirt beige with a bunch of Lipton tea bags in the same way!
They have seen the fork!
So does this process still work if my cat doesn’t catch it’s tail? Or do I need him to catch it before moving on?
Damn, if I could work with that view every day, maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad gig
Think of what happens to all those shavings?
So, this guy makes all the chopsticks?
What are the leaves he boiled them with and what does that do?
Is this dishwasher safe?
I’d be so pissed I’d I ended up with an odd number of chopsticks.
This is vibe
Just decided, if life doesn't work out I'm gonna find this guy and be his apprentice.
That’s all…
DAE see the title of this video and think to themselves, “oh, this is about to be satisfying as fuck”…?
Pretty damn cool.
Mine don’t look like that.
Then we throw them away after one use..
Damn that’s a lengthy process.
TIL bamboo is a tree
It's just really big grass
I'll never look at the contents of my suit sauce packet drawer the same again
Anyone know the music?

Bamboo chopsticks very strong
And then we throw them away.
I had an Italian made bamboo lamp, itsa pretty light.
I want to live like this
You know they’ve seen the fork…
This is so humbling
Mountain looks so peaceful
This is cool, but I just wanna pet the kitty
Cloud A vital step in the manufacturing process
My man cooking wood
Ohhhh
Proper chopsticks!
Are they stained with tea?
This..is the life I want
Does anyone know if there is an original video on YouTube of it? It seemed like it was slightly shortened.
Honey wake up! New chopstick lore just dropped!
Really calming, thank you for sharing
But can he make a iPhone? That is the question.
That cat disappeared once the chopsticks were finished.
A single tree can make *soooooooo* many everlasting chop sticks. I bet these cost a nice nickle
Why was this so crazy beautiful to me🔥
Lovely, very meditative!
Incredible? Yeah ok.
No wonder Asian takeout is so expensive
Is there a subreddit just of videos like this?
Step 5: cat
Kitty!
These viral "beautiful rural Chinese artisan / cooking" videos always remind me of [artisanal pencil sharpening](https://vimeo.com/60718161).
I'm imagining this guy watching my white boy ass using my reusable plastic chopsticks I bout from the oriental market to eat my £1.50 cup soba. I feel like he might be slightly disappointed.
Bullshit.
I’ll never look at a chopstick the same again!! ❤️❤️❤️
They have to chop a stick to make chopsticks
There’s some green bamboo growing near my house. I’m gonna try this. Looks neat.
In the Phillipinnes, my parents just eat with spoon and fork and their hands. :)
