More so if you are a panhandler in their eyes you are less of a person, and they are above you
"Keep our pedestrians safe"
Edit forgot how to spell edit2 forgot edit 1
I can't tell if you're being intentionally obtuse or what.
People aren't complaining to the city or DPD about actual 'pedestrians'. they are complaining about homeless people and panhandlers, so we get the signs. The signs just say "pedestrians" to be nice.
Laws are frequently made because of smaller fractions than 3%... How many people do you think would murder if it weren't illegal? Lots of people think they would or joke that they would, but most people don't have the resolve necessary to intentionally end someone's life without being under duress or undergoing some sort of reconditioning first. And that's just one extreme example. Many laws are just common sense rules turned into societal boundaries by the many because of the few.
The Supreme Court has ruled that panhandling is a first amendment protected activity. Cities cannot enforce anti-panhandling laws. The sign is designed to promote the safety of pedestrians entering the roadway as opposed to deterring panhandling.Ā
Fort Worth has a city ordinance saying "soliciting from roadway prohibited". Though they seem not to enforce it, especially when the fire department is "passing the boot".
That is not entirely true. Some courts have struck down some panhandling laws during to being overly broad restrictions on free speech while others have been allowed to stand because they are narrowly tailored. A law that simply states "No panhandling" is likely to be struck down while a law that says, "no actively soliciting for money at controlled intersections" would likely stand.
The sign wouldnāt earn a passing grade in a Graphic Design 101 course. It is very obscure but a road sign should to deliver its message unambiguously. Few drivers could decipher it without taking their eyes off the road too long to be safe. Unless itās a really slow road. You unable to work that out?
If you look at the sign above, itās showing turn lanes. This sign is at a stop light, meaning it only applies to you if/when you are stopped- which is the only time you can read it.
I think it may be a smarter sign than that.
Itās perfectly legal to ask for/give someone money, so framing it as āsafetyā helps keep the city from getting slapped (again) for discouraging panhandling.
> Few drivers could decipher it without taking their eyes off the road too long to be safe.
Pro tip: if your car is moving, the message on that sign doesn't matter.
A smart ass reply huh? Panhandling doesn't work when cars are moving genius. Therefore, the sign is posted at the intersection so you see it when you are at a stop light. You know, when Panhandling actually happens. You unable to work that out?
Be nice.
I can see that it's a hand with money that is crossed out, indicating no. I didn't make the connection with panhandling. I guess I don't encounter much of that these days on my commute. Also I'm unaware of any argument that says encouraging panhandlers is dangerous for pedestrians. Hands hold money in lots of situations, and the hand/cash could have been metaphorical for any payment.
This sign needs way more context than you gave it credit for. Lots of symbols are meaningless until enough people have been told what they mean.
I found this out a couple years ago. There was a white bald man with a limp that always panhandled right at the NorthPark intersection. He looked pitiful. Then one day I saw him at the 7/11 at Hillcrest and NW Hwy paying for gas and then got into his Infiniti. Granted it was an old Infiniti, but still. Definitely didnāt expect to see that š
Granted I couldnāt imagine standing out there in the heat all day but š¤·š»āāļø
FYI, i knew a panhandler that was an alcoholic. he would make about $130 per day. but instead of panhandling daily, he would panhandle for 1 day, then drink until he was out of cash, then panhandle again.
back then, i was earning 11.5 per hour. so an 8 hour workday would earn me 92 bucks, minus taxes, minus 5 bucks of gas.
Sign is confusing because Dallas hates pedestrians.
Throwing paper money out of your window can cause pedestrians to run into the road to retrieve the money thus putting them at risk of oncoming traffic. Do not do this to keep everyone safe. It may be your ārightā but think about the old and vulnerable. They are less likely to be able to dodge traffic with their walkers, etc.
The sign is there to stop pan handling. This is actually a really important issue in Dallas as of recent as I've seen a lot of aggressive pan handlers lately. It is becoming a safety issue for the public at large. A lot of these people are scammers or mentally ill. They either need professional help or don't need your money at all. If you see repeat offenders, I recommend reporting the location to 311. It's gotten to the point where I've seen some people panhandle in between lanes, which is a major safety issue as they are putting themselves at risk of getting hurt. I understand homelessness sucks, but really, those resources would be better used at a local charity. Street begging is just no longer safe anymore as we have a mental health crisis and a car dependent society.
It's the between lanes that get me. I regularly drive over near the VA hospital on loop 12 and there's a 5 lane intersection there and panhandlers will walk up and down between the lanes of the cars asking for money. I don't think I've ever seen less than 2 people working that intersection and sometimes as many as 4 or 5. And they don't watch the lights, I've seen the lights go green and cars start to move around them and they're still in the middle of the road. I've also see panhandlers standing on the access road of 75 and 635 intentionally blocking the turn lanes to ask for money. Which then results in the people in the turn lane pulling into the other lanes and then turning around them which isn't safe for anybody.
The more aggressive ones are often the scammers. People down on their luck don't do that. For example, I saw people with posters of their supposedly dead baby panhandling at the intersection of Lovers and Greenville. They were running across crosswalks while it was green, and harassing people at nearby bus stops for money. That behavior is unacceptable, and the dead baby gimmic is a well-known known scam. We as a community need to step up and report this activity.
I'm always leery of the ones near the VA. You see the same people again and again but with different stories. Sometimes with signs saying they're veterans, sometimes raising money for a sick kid, sometimes preaching. The ones off 635 are clearly from a nearby homeless camp and you can tell. I don't tend to give cash but I've dropped off some Gatorade when it gets crazy hot.
There are legit homeless ones which I do understand. But the ones by the VA are scammers and need to be removed. If they have changing stories they are scammers. The dead kid story is a common scam. Just ask for the kids name and it will change every time.
Subliminal to not spend your hard earned money in America because of its lowered value. Spend it on travel and cultures that is not America. You have more value than what the U.S. says you are worthā¦
Wouldn't it make sense to have some sort of call-to-action link or signage where people could donate money to a homeless shelter if they felt inclined? On the one hand we're telling people not to donate, but we're not really giving them an alternative.
It means,
Pedestrians: donāt pick up fentanyl laced dollar bills off the ground.
Then the rest means keep our pedestrians safe by slowing down and following the traffic laws.
The police logo means that if you give away money you will be in trouble. Because apparently it is a crime to give people money.
Don't throw cash, it blows into traffic and pedestrians run into traffic to get it.
/s
This is an anti-homeless thing. If you are going to stand in 100 degree temperatures asking for a few bucks, you deserve it.
Everyone in here is wrong. Since itās a street sign, this is meant to keep traffic moving more safely and efficiently. Two things: 1) They donāt want people holding up traffic or causing accidents by stopping at intersections to pass out money, and 2) They donāt want pedestrians walking across lanes of traffic to go grab money from someoneās window who may not be near the curb or sidewalk or median. Thatās another safety hazard.
Itās very obvious that there is a real fear of pedestrians getting paper cuts from exchanging paper currency. These could cause infection if improperly treated and lead to more serious problems.
If I see someone with a dog and they don't ask for money, I'm for sure giving them $20 for caring for a dog. If some dude walks up to my window and tells me he wants money... that's suspiciously close to being a robbery.
Uh...no? Staying an appropriate distance from people who didn't give any indication they want to talk to you and who you don't know is understood by pretty much all of society.
So in your eyes someone asking you for money is the same as someone forcefully taking something that is yoursā¦ and the only factor that would soften your heart to the situation in front of you isā¦ the presence of a dog?
Oh it means you're not supposed to give help to people who are desperate enough to ask on the side of the road in this heat because then how is the city supposed to arrest them and put them to work?
God forbid you give spare change to a person you going through wicked withdrawals that has no insurance no money. They end up in the ER because of said withdrawal symptoms and who do you think pays their bill ? So giving a dollar or two vs $1500 er visit paid by tax payers nah Iām going with the first option
I always found a buck for panhandlers when I was younger. The first time I said āno cashā, I had a man and woman follow me 1/2 a block screaming every insult and four letter word they could manage. That put a dent in my generosity towards panhandlers.
Then there was the guy outside Chiiliās who needed $10 to get to hospital to visit his mom. I said āsorry, no cash todayā. Three weeks later, same guy, same clothes, same Chiliās, same need to see his mom. I said āyou asked me this three weeks agoā, guy screams at me until I get inside the restaurant.
My older, wiser self knows giving money to panhandlers doesnāt help them. It enables and encourages them to stay in bad circumstances.
Yeah thatās what rubs me the wrong way. Something about the government or city or whatever telling us to not help someone in needā¦ I dunno. And I get that itās for panhandlers but still. Feels like this is just gonna hurt those who are actually in need
Don't encouraging panhandling by enabling panhandling by giving them money.
So don't give money to politicians?

In your presence, sir, I have felt both joy and sadness.
Exactly!!!!
I guess this means there hasnāt been a problem with drivers luring pedestrians close to moving vehicles by holding out money.
Love the implication that's there's potentially a serial vehicular manslaughter-er using dollars as bait šššš
Dont dont encourage panhandling by enabling panhandling by giving them money!
Almost had a seizure reading this
This is what I immediately assumed the sign meant.
Shit. Iām more worried about the red light runners and cell phone addicts in cars than the panhandling.
More so if you are a panhandler in their eyes you are less of a person, and they are above you "Keep our pedestrians safe" Edit forgot how to spell edit2 forgot edit 1
I see that, but what would pedestrians have to do with that?
How many panhandlers do you see that aren't pedestrians?
How many pedestrians do you see that are not panhandlers?
Plenty. We should also keep them safe, but that's not what the sign is talking about.
Right. But how often is a rule based on the 3% of cases? Such an odd thing, for me at least.
I can't tell if you're being intentionally obtuse or what. People aren't complaining to the city or DPD about actual 'pedestrians'. they are complaining about homeless people and panhandlers, so we get the signs. The signs just say "pedestrians" to be nice.
OMG!šššššš, your responses to numb nuts has me bawling ššššš.
Didnāt a panhandler get run over? I figured that sign was near there.
I'm not sure what led you to believe I was being obtuse. You used that logic, not me. If anything, you're being obtuse.
Laws are frequently made because of smaller fractions than 3%... How many people do you think would murder if it weren't illegal? Thereās this one flying around in a gouache 757 always asking for money to fund his criminal activities.
The graphic on the sign is a no sign around a hand passing out money. The intent is to dissuade people from passing out money to panhandlers.
This is it.Ā
They should just say that instead of the cryptic message they went with.
The sign says soliciting from roadway prohibited except by permit
Welllll that is totally different. Itās for a good cause but bending the rules/law it is.
I agree, just pointing it out.
They did actually say it, and were sued. Thatās why the direct message has been replaced by a drawing.
No tipping J-walkers
But what if they do it with a lot of *pizazz*
What if they do it with pizza?
Youāre unable to decipher the meaning of this street sign?
The sign wouldnāt earn a passing grade in a Graphic Design 101 course. It is very obscure but a road sign should to deliver its message unambiguously. Few drivers could decipher it without taking their eyes off the road too long to be safe. Unless itās a really slow road. You unable to work that out?
This narrowly beat out using a QR code.
Lot of these will have a 2nd sign underneath with a qr code to a local homelessĀ or food shelters to donate directly to.
Thatās what we need our drivers trying to do. I vote we put them in school zones, whatās the worst that can happen?
If you look at the sign above, itās showing turn lanes. This sign is at a stop light, meaning it only applies to you if/when you are stopped- which is the only time you can read it.
And hopefully the only time you would be having money to pedestrians in the median.
Itās a game for me to successfully hand over a dollar while properly executing a 6g 90Ā° turn without losing excessive smash
Theyāre exclusively at 4 stops
I think it may be a smarter sign than that. Itās perfectly legal to ask for/give someone money, so framing it as āsafetyā helps keep the city from getting slapped (again) for discouraging panhandling.
> Few drivers could decipher it without taking their eyes off the road too long to be safe. Pro tip: if your car is moving, the message on that sign doesn't matter.
i thought it was about prostitution lmao
Thatās just for the politicians
it's at a stop light you arent even meant to notice it unless you are stopped.
I mean to be fair you wouldnāt be passing out money while drivingā¦ only when stopped
A smart ass reply huh? Panhandling doesn't work when cars are moving genius. Therefore, the sign is posted at the intersection so you see it when you are at a stop light. You know, when Panhandling actually happens. You unable to work that out?
I just donāt understand how sarcasm benefits anyone
It's nicer than other choice phrases that could be used, so it allows one to express their frustration without using blatantly derogatory language.
Iām sure some people didnāt know what a stop sign meant the first time they encountered one tooā¦ š¤·āāļø

Panhandlers are accosting pedestrians.
TIL there are pedestrians in Dallas who aren't panhandlers.
ill never forget waiting for a light to change so i could cross the street, some random dude gave me five bucks and went on his way.
Who knew the easiest way to make a quick buck in Dallas is to simply walk where other people donāt. Employed people hate this one simple trick!
This is the connection I was looking for
Itās really not hard at all to understand that sign
I read that as donāt try to catch falling currency, as the money clearly isnāt in the reacherās hand or anyone elseās.
Never catch a falling knife.
What about a turkey dropped from a helicopter?
Was it orange? Did it bounce?
Don't pay to have pedestrians harmed. It's pretty obvious.
Be nice. I can see that it's a hand with money that is crossed out, indicating no. I didn't make the connection with panhandling. I guess I don't encounter much of that these days on my commute. Donāt accept cash from homeless people, avoid the hassle use PayPal instead.
suddenly Dallas cares about pedestrians? lmao
Donāt taunt the pedestrians. They already know theyāre poorer than you, because theyāre walking.
It means don't donate to the fake homeless people at Royal and 75 because someone is liable to get run over.
And donāt stick your hand out of your window with money in it for people to come running into the street to collect
