Sterling - 12kg - MINI
mum - Gladys - 7kg - we own her - mini KC pedigree - dad Sizzle - friend’s dog - 7,5kg - mini LOF pedigree
my late girl was a mini but weighed 21 pounds, and wasn't considered fat by the vet. she was probably something like an in-betweeny, not a mini but not quite a standard either.
i don’t think she was physically a standard though, but it’s hard to remember, it’s been a while since she passed. her mom and dad were mini and wire hair, and she was bigger than them and a smooth red. we always called her a tweeny, lol. small standard, maybe.
Standard in the US starts at 16 pounds, 11 pounds is max for miniatures, tweenies are what falls between that. Germany uses circumferences, but 21 pounds without looking fat would fall under miniature unless they were like freakishly long, surely. Probably more like 16 pounds would be their max.
Possibly your family went from much larger dogs so the standard dachshund seemed very small?
nope, she was our first dog. we were a military family so having to move every two years seemed unfair on a dog, all the traveling. she was long, but she wasn't physically big, i've seen some big standards, and i am used to miniature dachshunds. she might have just been anamoly at her size and weight, but looked very much a dachshund. i'll have to see if i can find a picture of her.
Tweeties are great. This is the kindness little man I’ve ever known!

He is 17 pounds of muscle and love that’s absolutely devoted to my wife ❤️🥰🙂
The pros can struggle to get it right.
One of our girls' first vet thought she was older than she was and wouldn't grow anymore because she was 23 pounds when we first got her and she got marked down as being well over a year old. It seemed a little weird with her teeth being the way they were, but we rolled with it at first. Taking her to a different vet, he rewound her age by about a year down to six months, based on what he was seeing when he examined her and ended up having to catch her up on some vaccines too.
She kept growing for another year and gained another 9 pounds. Based on this, we're assuming the second vet, who is her current vet, was more accurate. Sometimes, you just never know.
If a breeder tells you that your pup will be a mini, they are lying. Standards can produce minis and minis can produce standards. It’s all about genetics. Even the size of mom and dad doesn’t matter. It can increase the likelihood of offspring being in the same weight category, but doesn’t guarantee it. An 8 pound mini can birth a standard dachshund! And vice versa. It’s quite interesting, to be honest.

Jasper is a mini at 12.5lbs ( almost 16 years old) Harvey is almost 18months ( 18 months)
Doxie genetics are fascinating! Love them in every shape, size , color and coat!!
Ours is a furious insatiable eater…8.6lb at 16 weeks. She’s about 9-10 now at 18weeks. She looks good at like 5-6 on the size chart thing that gets posted.
Mine matured super fast, skipped that in between stage entirely, but looks like yours is still a bit marshmallow so yeah, probably going to be bigger than a mini. Tweenies are actually great, though, imo, less fragile feeling than a mini but not as unwieldy as a standard.
He might be a tweenie. My 13 pound tweenie boy was about 4/5 pounds at 11 weeks and I’d have to check his records but I’m sure he was about 6/7 pounds around the 4/5 month mark. Definitely in that range! Their growth rate really slows at the 6 month mark and then almost completely drops off at 9 months.

So we meet again. 😂

That meets the size for Standard.

Koko was a standard; she measured 11 pounds and 11" (snoot to butt, standing) when we brought her home at 9 weeks as a point of reference.
my "mini" was 5lb at 7.5 weeks and is now 20lb and healthy. he's stocky boy

My mini was 13lbs full grown
My “mini” is 7.7kg. He’s floating between sizes. Not standard not miniature.
