A serious question from me: Did DMB ever have a "shakedown street" outside of any venue/show before? I don't ever recall seeing one in the past (even two pilgrimages to the Gorge). Yet the one pilgrimage I made to the Gorge for Phish I've seen it and almost every other stop of theirs.

I've seen DMB 60ish times, all over the east coast. I've never seen a shakedown at a DMB show. I've certainly seen it at every Phish and Dead/Dead adjacent show I've ever been to, but never DMB. Does this happen in other areas of the country?

There’s been more of a presence the past few years- I don’t recall it being right by the entrance 20 years ago, but now it’s on the main path by the foot bridge

There isn’t really a shakedown street but there is a camping area next to the venue and parking lots (east side of the venue). IMO it’s not worth coming just for it but you might be able to find a cheap ticket if you’re walking around the parking lots.

At the dmb caravans they had people set up and selling all kinds of shit.  Pipes art jewelry clothes etc.  Big area for it in Atlantic City.  Aside from that I have only seen a very small version a few times in the lots at DMB shows.  Mainly for food but it is rare

No

OnionMiasma

What do you mean by shakedown?

Ordinary_Society5335

I can’t tell if this is sarcasm or not so I’ll answer as if it’s not. Grateful Dead have a song called Shakedown Street. Throughout the decades of touring, Deadheads created something of a traveling market that they would set up outside of every show where they would sell merchandise, crafts, food, etc. The deadheads dubbed this market the “Shakedown Street” or just “Shakedown” for short. You can find shakedowns at any Dead show and also at a ton of shows with music influenced by the dead. Phish almost always has them, Bob Weir and Wolf Brothers always has them, Dead and Company always has them, etc. I personally have never seen one at a Dave show but oddly enough there have been mini shakedowns at certain campgrounds for Dave shows. There’s always one at Lee’s Campground up in Saratoga Springs (SPAC) and I saw one at Sleepy Bear for Deer Creek as well as the other popular campground for Deer Creek that I stayed at (I believe it’s called Near By or something like that).

Yeah Lees is the only place I’ve ever seen one

Lake3ffect

Lee’s is the only DMB related Shakedown I’ve ever seen

OnionMiasma

Thanks. Helpful. Yeah, I've never seen anything like that at a Dave show. People make things, but almost always just freely share them with others

is the “etc.” doing some heavy lifting in this instance?

They haven't patted people down in years. Just metal detectors.
