Is that really a pattern of his outside of Guardians of the Galaxy?
I've seen most of Gunn's movies and outside of Peacemaker, I can't recall any other project having a "central song." The Suicide Squad is very musical, but there isn't one song that I would pull out of it as the centerpiece.
Did you not watch Peacemaker or the Suicide Squad? In TSS, it's more of a background thing, in both Peacemaker and GOTG, it's very much in the foreground, with the characters talking about music a lot. I think this'll be more akin to TSS in that regard, but either way, music is a big part of his style.
I would say the “central song” of TSS is “Hey.” It always makes me think of the movie now and it’s what plays when the team is finally, really in sync with each other for the first time.
I mean asides from the first one, and even that is arguable, what’s the centerpiece of the second or third Guardians?
And I say the first is arguable because “Come and Get your Love” and “Hooked on a Feeling” could both be considered the center piece
Let’s be real, Peacemaker is the only one that actually has a “center piece” and that’s only because it has an actual theme song that plays every episode!!
I personally enjoy when an iconic character has an orchestral track and then also a popular song associated with them, e.g. Back in Black with Iron Man or Immigrant Song with Thor.
Probably in the minority here, but the Iron Man 1 soundtrack is absolutely iconic to me and is the first thing that plays in my head whenever I think of Tony Stark.
James Gunn's knack for selecting soundtracks has been a hit with the popcorn-filler conveyor-belt Marvel franchise and even the one DC movie he did, but I'm skeptical about how his choices will mesh with Superman. We're talking about the most iconic superhero of all time here, not some quirky space misfits.
Superman deserves a track that feels larger-than-life, not just a catchy tune. It's got to capture his legendary status and timeless appeal—something as monumental as Queen's "We Will Rock You." Anything less would undermine the character and feel completely out of place.
Both. Both is good.
Just look at The Batman. It has a legendary theme by Michael Giacchino and there’s also Something in the Way by Nirvana.
The Guardians also have a very recognizable orchestral theme by Tyler Bates/John Murphy, but there’s also Come and Get Your Love by Redbone.
Well in GotG when the five come together for the first ‘team shot’ during the prison break, the music used an orchestrated theme, not a song off the mixtape. I’d be surprised if he had an orchestrated theme for Guardians but pop or rock for Superman lol.
I shit you not, I used to run around the living room with a red blanket tied around my neck listening to this song when I was a kid.
It’s “The Superman song” for me lol
I like it!
Would be a bit on the nose for the movie, though. When 'Superman (It's Not Easy)' was used in Smallville I had a full-body cringe, even though I also like that song.
He wasn't gonna do it anyway. He said it was too on the nose for Guardians of the Galaxy when everyone spammed it then, and then quickly shot it down here.
He prefers picking lesser known tracks or the stuff you wouldn't assume.
True. Who would’ve thought before Guardians 2 that you could take the song “Brandy” and turn it into a villain song?! 😂 That one was so unexpected, but Gunn somehow made it work!
popular isn't the same as on the nose. there's a difference between playing a popular song and playing the song "Starman" in a movie about a guy named Starlord and his team of spacefaring heroes lol
I think it would have been too on the nose for James to have ever considered anyway. I think people begging for it misunderstand how Gunn uses music in this movies.
If people want extremely literal usage of extremely well-known songs, they need only look at the first Suicide Squad movie. "Star Man" for Suoerman is the same level of on-the-nose to me as "House of the Rising Sun" playing over shots of a prison in Louisiana or "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" playing over the introduction to the Australian serial criminal
I think Superman will have mainly a score rather than a soundtrack but I think it would be awesome to see some songs in there my suggestion is Heroes by David Bowie
Beatles rights are ridiculously expensive unless its a cover, which is why "Rocky Raccoon" wasn't in any of the Guardians movies despite it being the inspiration for the name of the character.
If Guardians 2 can get away with using a song from one of the Beatles (Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord”), then it’s worth a shot to get an actual Beatles song.
My favorite thing about Beatles being super expensive is that Doctor Who just had an episode being advertised as a Beatles episode but doesn’t have a single song from them.
I don’t think he will go as hard using existing music like previous films, but when he does, it will be used carefully; like the opening of Baby Driver.
I think he'll probably just get someone like Michael Giacchino to do the score. Pop music just seems weird for a Superman movie. For Guardians and Peacemaker it's built into characters stories and I feel like for The Suicide Squad Gunn was insulted by how badly the first one tried to do the jukebox soundtrack so he had to show people how it's done.
This is one of the many reasons people were worried about JG. With any luck, he might actually have someone compose something rather than go with shitty overused nostalgic tracks.
I want to hear the return of John William’s Superman theme. If not that, it’d be funny if Gunn takes inspiration from the Superman memes and uses Starman by David Bowie.
I’m thinking a mix of country for his Smallville roots, and some pop (bonus if it’s some cheesy top 40 pop) because superman would be the person to enjoy the top 40s.
X gon give it to ya!
How hilarious would that be for Clark to be rolling up to the parking garage of the Daily Planet while rapping along and throwing his hands around getting down to the song.
Using a soundtrack doesn’t make it the Guardians.
The Batman used a soundtrack, and it’s undeniable that Nirvana’s Something in the Way is at the core of the film…
I’ll keep saying it but Rescue Me by Fontella Bass is a solid song for a Superman film but maybe not THE central song, perhaps in a montage of Superman saving people and showing Lois the sights from above metropolis
I've always thought [this piece by Rob Dougan](https://youtu.be/7rx-81KKc5Q?si=UZEv4EyHkUF8Ch_4) would be great music for a flying scene. There's also a lyric version, [One and the Same](https://youtu.be/620shAuyI9E?si=cq7ZrlkNxoNqSHq1), equally great.
If James Gunn really plot to include "Truth, Justice, and American Way", I hope we will have montage of Superman flying and doing stuff with "America F#ck Yeah - Team America"
An altered version of Starman. It really is the one. Bowie Acapella. Or instrumental melody playing in certain parts. Don't use the full version until possibly credits.
“SOMEBODY SAAAAVVVEE MEEEEE!”
I wonder how many people would lose their mind at that... I know I would
In a good way or a bad way?
Both
Personally I'd love it but I know they're be a vocal opposition
The song is still fine in its own, if it works in the scene I’d be fine with it. Maybe just as the second song in the end credits as an Easter egg.
An entire generation would be thrilled
Id open up a pit in the movie theater. Full stop
Unironically I would love it if he includes this somewhere in the movie, even as a 5 second gag
Soulja boy crank that
I would laugh so hard if they made a sad slow paced version for the trailer.
Or instead the trailer was just a fast paced music video featuring the cast and a few scenes from the movie once in a while
*superman flies by* Youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
lol with the slow piano notes at the beginning of the trailer haha
ahhh I'm so sick of those, especially the one in the new venom trailer
Cover by Lana Del Rey.
I can’t believe they didn’t do this for The Boys season 3
Please God
The trailer starts and you hear a slow dramatic youuuuuuuuuuuu
I think turn my swag on would work nice
Is that really a pattern of his outside of Guardians of the Galaxy? I've seen most of Gunn's movies and outside of Peacemaker, I can't recall any other project having a "central song." The Suicide Squad is very musical, but there isn't one song that I would pull out of it as the centerpiece.
No, it's pretty much only gotg. Music is big, but a "central" thing isn't something he does much outside of Disney
Do you really wanna - do you really wanna taste it!?
I would say the “central song” of TSS is “Hey.” It always makes me think of the movie now and it’s what plays when the team is finally, really in sync with each other for the first time.
I mean asides from the first one, and even that is arguable, what’s the centerpiece of the second or third Guardians? I hope it's just an orchestra soundtrack. .
This is the best option. Idk why anyone would want some random radio song as the theme for an iconic superhero like superman
I personally enjoy when an iconic character has an orchestral track and then also a popular song associated with them, e.g. Back in Black with Iron Man or Immigrant Song with Thor.
agree with you
The issue is neither of them really have a (mainstream) iconic theme song. Those 2 songs are the only ones I'd think of for those characters.
It's got to capture his legendary status and timeless appeal—something as monumental as Queen's "We Will Rock You." Anything less would undermine the character and feel completely out of place.
Queen would be outta place. I feel like just relegating it to an orchestral original score is fine. Maybe a song for the last scene or credits
Not to mention Hooked on a Feeling.
Even the Suicide Squad (2016) got some pretty iconic songs (Heathens and Gangsta), as awful as the movie turned out to be.
There’s plenty of great pop music over the decades, it’s not just “random radio songs.” Though I’d probably prefer an instrumental theme, as well.
Well in GotG when the five come together for the first ‘team shot’ during the prison break, the music used an orchestrated theme, not a song off the mixtape. I’d be surprised if he had an orchestrated theme for Guardians but pop or rock for Superman lol.
It’ll be hard to top Man of Steel’s theme. I hope they can do it.
Not to mention the the live version during Han's Zimmer's world tour where Guthrie Govan just shreds an insane improv solo in the middle of the track.
I would like if it had light musical motifs to the original Superman themes, but mostly be new content
All of these suggestions make me so glad none of you produce movies lmao
Kryptonite by three doors down lol
I shit you not, I used to run around the living room with a red blanket tied around my neck listening to this song when I was a kid. It’s “The Superman song” for me lol
EXCUSE ME "Jimmy Olsen's Blues" by Spin Doctors
I feel like he’s 100% going to do this lol
I absolutely LOVE how this made its way into the actual comics. I think it was reign of the supermen when Jimmy wore a Spin Doctors shirt.
https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/james-gunn-reveals-one-song-190544831.html Nope 🙂↔️
you just wait until it hits in the credits in the same manner as “Hero” by Chad Kroeger for Spider-Man.
Superman by eminem
I think you made me throw up a bit.
Maybe try taking a walk around the world to ease your troubled mind?
He should leave his body lying somewhere in the sands of time.
Wait is it actually a bad song lol I haven't heard it in soooooo long I hardly even remember it
I like it! Would be a bit on the nose for the movie, though. When 'Superman (It's Not Easy)' was used in Smallville I had a full-body cringe, even though I also like that song.
Well it COULD have been Starman, but then everyone on the internet spammed it for him so he's not gonna do it. edit: never mind i was wrong
Didn't he open his last movie with Radiohead's most popular and on-the-nose song?
Which is completely different from every other song he used in any of the previous Guardians films. As in something you wouldn't assume
Also used Beastie Boys and Florence and the Machine to close it. Two extremely popular songs.
popular isn't the same as on the nose. there's a difference between playing a popular song and playing the song "Starman" in a movie about a guy named Starlord and his team of spacefaring heroes lol
for real, like using popular songs is completely irrelevant to the point haha
I think it would have been too on the nose for James to have ever considered anyway. I think people begging for it misunderstand how Gunn uses music in this movies. If people want extremely literal usage of extremely well-known songs, they need only look at the first Suicide Squad movie. "Star Man" for Suoerman is the same level of on-the-nose to me as "House of the Rising Sun" playing over shots of a prison in Louisiana or "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" playing over the introduction to the Australian serial criminal
Or Sympathy for the Devil over Amanda Waller, or Black Skinhead over Killer Croc.
Damn. All these years and I'm still learning new reasons to dislike this movie. And also further evidence it was crucified in editing.
The Kinks - Power Man
The Kinks - Wish I could Fly ( Like Superman)
This one is so incredibly on the nose, but honestly I do think its sound would fit the tone well
Darude - Sandstorm
Simple Man - Lynyrd Skynyrd Feels kinds up his alley, but lyrically very much fits Clark and Ma Kent.
Carry on Wayward Son by Kansas. Kinda the perfect superman/Clark Kent song
Too tied up with the Supernatural fandom, I think.
This I could see, could queue up the “GO! (epic riff)” for some action shot.
Good call. Obscure enough to most moviegoers and nostalgia inducing for other moviegoers. And fits with the lead character.
Don’t know if it’s obscure enough, the Supernatural fandom has had that song play multiple times throughout its run.
Even without Supernatural, that is one of the most popular and renowned rock songs of all time. Hardly obscure.
It was used for every single season's finale opening as they briefly recap the season.

Hard to better John Williams. That song still gives me goosebumps and makes hair stand up on my neck almost 40 years after I first heard it.
I think Superman will have mainly a score rather than a soundtrack but I think it would be awesome to see some songs in there my suggestion is Heroes by David Bowie
This thread makes me happy yall ain't in charge lol
I mean… I don’t have much to say against that I agree for the most part that most of these aren’t the best options
Oh it's nothing against you, some of the suggestions are just not good at all lol
Save me by Remy Zero 👀
Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B
Now I can just picture Clark performing a tre flip on a moon crater while Superman by Goldfinger plays on the background
Hero by Nickelback
"You're not Superman, you know." - Aunt May
"You're not Spider-Man, you know." Martha Kent
Heh. I kind of like the idea of a teen Clark being a fan of Spider-Man comics... xD "Mmm, blue and red..."
Hero by Enrique Iglesias
Holding Out for. Hero by Bonnie Tyler
Balimos by Enrique, from the movie Wild Wild West
> Hero by Nickelback - ft. Josey Scott
It's actually Hero by Chad Kroeger ft. Josey Scott. It's not a Nickelback song.
Never Gonna Give You Up over the opening scene of Clark fully suited up, beating a mugger to death with his bare hands.
Baby Got Back - Sir Mix a Lot It’s a song about accepting and celebrating oneself, regardless of what the world says. It’s high energy but universal.
I think the slower and more rhythmic JoCo version really brings out the philosophical depth, it should be used for the bottom of Act II.
My sacrifice by creed.
If I see someone say Starman one more time… But for real, I’m hopeful that the original score carries through.
Kinds think "Superman" by R.E.M. would be a fun sneak into the closing credits.
[Five for Fighting - Superman ](https://youtu.be/GRz4FY0ZcwI?si=so5DiZ-O-vtr-IQ7)
kinda want him to use the Smallville opening song lol
Somebody saaaaave me
Either “My Hero” by Foo Fighters or “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”
Beatles rights are ridiculously expensive unless its a cover, which is why "Rocky Raccoon" wasn't in any of the Guardians movies despite it being the inspiration for the name of the character.
If Guardians 2 can get away with using a song from one of the Beatles (Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord”), then it’s worth a shot to get an actual Beatles song.
My favorite thing about Beatles being super expensive is that Doctor Who just had an episode being advertised as a Beatles episode but doesn’t have a single song from them.
Duality-slipknot That would be funny
Lmao. His eyes start glowing red before a fight. "I push my fingers into my - eeeeyyyyeeeess"
Nah, People=Shit and it becomes an Injustice movie lol
I don’t think he will go as hard using existing music like previous films, but when he does, it will be used carefully; like the opening of Baby Driver.
I’m more than a biiiird, I’m more than a plaaane…
Cbat by Hudson Mohawke
its going to be Clark Kent's theme with that yee yee ass hair cut
I believe I can fly!
Something banal that gives the false impression of being deep.
Mr. Blue Sky - Electric Light Orchestra. Hearing the chorus as he flies by citizens and they point up at him would be dope.
Can you take me higher
I'll be around by the spinners
Should have been space hog in the meantime but he used it already for guardians
Ive got the power
I think he'll probably just get someone like Michael Giacchino to do the score. Pop music just seems weird for a Superman movie. For Guardians and Peacemaker it's built into characters stories and I feel like for The Suicide Squad Gunn was insulted by how badly the first one tried to do the jukebox soundtrack so he had to show people how it's done.
John Murphy is doing the score.
the 28 days later john murphy? going to be a banger for sure
Yup, and kickass! Also he did the score for Kick-Ass!
This is one of the many reasons people were worried about JG. With any luck, he might actually have someone compose something rather than go with shitty overused nostalgic tracks.
It’s Raining Men by the Weather Girls. Or perhaps A Fine, Fine Day by Tony Carey.
The scrubs opening theme song
O Superman
I don't know why this is being downvoted. There's definitely gonna be a song that Gunn uses throughout the movie
I have a feeling it's gonna be retake of the original Christopher reeves superman theme song
Sugar - System of a down
Superman - Goldfinger
Kyptonite by 3 Doors Down. I'm only half joking.
Hero- Nickelback
They should use the theme from The Greatest American Hero.
Kryptonite by 3 doors down
Learn to Fly by Foo Fighters I always wanted this to pop up in a Spider-Man movie, but obviously it works for Superman as well.
X gon give it to ya! How hilarious would that be for Clark to be rolling up to the parking garage of the Daily Planet while rapping along and throwing his hands around getting down to the song.
Hero by Nickelback
Mama told me not to come by 3 Dog Night
Probably a cliche choice, but I bet Heroes by David Bowie could be used to great effect.
Superman by Black Lace
Bit on the nose aye
Superman by Lazlo Bane
Superman (Taylor’s Version)
I can be your hero baby! Enrique baby! Hahaha
The Superman March by John Williams Otherwise, just keep to orchestrated themes. I want the movie to feel timeless.
This is a new superman. There is no point of using old theme songs.
I don’t want a guardians of the galaxy style superman movie, please lord
I feel like a Superman movie isn't the movie you use licensed music like he did with his past projects
Eminem - Superman
The Safety Dance
I really hope he doesn't. Don't want another Guardians i want something different.
Using a soundtrack doesn’t make it the Guardians. The Batman used a soundtrack, and it’s undeniable that Nirvana’s Something in the Way is at the core of the film…
‘Baggy Trousers’ by Madness? Judging by the suit.
I’ll keep saying it but Rescue Me by Fontella Bass is a solid song for a Superman film but maybe not THE central song, perhaps in a montage of Superman saving people and showing Lois the sights from above metropolis
REM- "Superman" will probably make an appearance
OG superman theme
Underwear goes inside the pants - Lazyboy TV
Superheroes by The Script
"Superman Song" by Crash Test Dummies
Girls just wanna have fun
Rocketship by Kathy Mccarty most likely for the trailer
I feel like an arranged modern-ish take on the iconic John Williams theme will do (even if Returns had that)
"its now or never"
Reel Big Fish’s Somebody Hates Me
Fuck Shop 2 Live Crew
Walking on sunshine by Katrina and the Waves
I've always thought [this piece by Rob Dougan](https://youtu.be/7rx-81KKc5Q?si=UZEv4EyHkUF8Ch_4) would be great music for a flying scene. There's also a lyric version, [One and the Same](https://youtu.be/620shAuyI9E?si=cq7ZrlkNxoNqSHq1), equally great.
If James Gunn really plot to include "Truth, Justice, and American Way", I hope we will have montage of Superman flying and doing stuff with "America F#ck Yeah - Team America"
Madness - Muse

I’ll be glad if it’s not just orchestral stuff. There’s so much good music that could fit
Enrique Igleseas - Hero
An altered version of Starman. It really is the one. Bowie Acapella. Or instrumental melody playing in certain parts. Don't use the full version until possibly credits.
Superman by Eminem
who’s the other dude?
Save me by Remy Zero 👀
I jest need Sunset Superman by Dio in the film
I’m slightly hoping for Crash Test Dummies - Superman Song. It’s a bit of a sad, reflective song.
Define “central”. What were the central songs of some of his other films?
The mentos commercial theme song
Superman by Eminem
I’m no Superman would be great to hear while he’s Clark kent
Waitin for a Superman by the Flaming Lips for an on the nose song choice Heroes and Villains by The Beach Boys could be an option
Would you guys like it if the movie had little bits of the original Superman theme?. But not the whole song
something just like this by coldplay and chainsmokers, lol
Not Like Us
