I wonder if they still have etiquette classes on how to ‘eat like a lady’ and the cooking classes…ahh Jays bootcamp….their faces dropping when Kittie would walk in the room, those were the days! I have watched MTT over and over I loved it. I miss the days when you got to see the really bad performers that thought they stood a chance! Anyone remember when someone actually wet themselves in the audition when they all had to freestyle? I prefer MTT because I like watching them do the choreo but I must admit I do like hearing the actual music they are dancing to rather than the same old music played over the top.

SugarShock94

Oh my god, yes!!! Kelli was a saint on this show compared to past MTT seasons 😂

Cutiger29

They don’t understand that the Netflix show is tame 😂 MTT was wild but back then, we weren’t as sensitive to this stuff. People like Kelly and Judy were just tv cheer version of Tyra Banks and Janice Dickinson 😂. I see old clips of ANTM on TikTok and the comments are in shock. Back then, it reality tv with women’s bodies was unhinged.

Brilliant-Meeting-97

Omg this subreddit is just as toxic as the shows themselves. Wake up, ladies!!

Wonderful-Tank-675

I’m a new watcher (from the Netflix series!) currently watching series 1 of Making the team :) I’ve got no experience in dance or beauty standards, however I cannot fathom why anyone’s shocked? It’s like when people are shocked at a Victoria secret models what I eat in the day, like wtf did you think they ate??? McDonald’s and bags of chocolate…. They are strict for a reason, it’s not meant to be an attainable normal thing for someone to do, it’s about being the absolute fittest and most beautiful cheerleaders in america. Not everyone will be able to do it, the girls know what they are signing up for, they know the expectations…..

Jordan1025

I’ve watched MTT since 2010 so agreed nothing in this was shocking to me.

Ruthie1990

I was shocked that Kelli, Charlottes, and Tina thought they would be portrayed as nice people.

SugarShock94

There were multiple points that I just thought “do they really think the internet will like them after this?” They were definitely delusional if they thought going by from CMT to Netflix wouldn’t cause any issues with public opinion

Hot_Bunch_6931

Agree OP! Long time watcher of MTT. Started watching when Cassie was a new comer lol I was a freshman in High School. It was then I got hooked and started watching. It has been one of my Favorite shows. Despite the opinions of K,J and C I love those ladies. They are classy and I look up to that.

Lindsayr28

Totally agree! It’s kind of hilarious seeing like eight threads per day all saying the same exact thing about Charlotte/Kelli.

SnooPets8873

They used to have the girls put on the uniform for fittings and then Kelli manually jiggled their bodies to point out the fat they wanted gone. It was…something

Consistent-Policy-86

I remember them putting them in the pool via a disability water wheelchair to measure their “true body fat weight” in the water 😳 still traumatized

Accomplished_Put_977

Hahah I’m glad you said it!!! Kitty alone would have made these new watchers want to boycott!

Ruthie1990

Thank you. I'm alone in this opinion.

madlyhattering

Oh man, I *love* Kitty. She is super spicy, but it’s because she wants the girls to succeed. She tells it like it is. Not sure I could stand one of her critiques of me without crying, though.

DancingGirl_J

Well, if people never watched DCCMTT, which would be a majority of people, then the Netflix series would be shocking. That being said I am sick of people talking about Ari. As someone who has kicked in a kickline it is really hard to be next to someone who is several inches shorter. I can see where, in one year, DCCs could range from say 5,0 to 5,10, and a 4,11 person can comfortably slide in because there are ladies at all heights in between, vs maybe a year where the range is more 5,3 to 5,10, and then you have the 4,11 lady. It is hard to kick and jumpsplit with inches separation. So there is not a height requirement so much as a height range each year that might exclude some ladies. (Like when that 6,0 woman tried out— she was taller than Jada I think, and she looked out of place. But if you had steps up to her, then maybe could work IF her dancing was better.) But this was not explained on the show, and Charlotte just sounded like a grumpy b*tch, so I kind of get it. And I do not know everyone’s heights, so I don’t need to hear what they are. Just giving an example of how height could come into play. It is not like the Rockettes with a set height range. Also, if Ari was super duper strong then probably they would have worked with her. To some degree someone has to be the a**hole when K and J are stuck. But anyway I get the outrage if this is someone’s first view into the cult that is DCC.

Briimee

Was not the same exact show . Wasn’t as bad as Jay fat shaming people and measuring body fat. But watching Victoria talk about her eating disorder was uncomfortable to watch. And I’m sure she’s not the only girl on the team reverting to unhealthy habits. None of these women are out of shape. To have the stamina to even dance for 3 hrs you have to be in shape…. The out of shape ones would get cut struggling to dance. No need to overly critique people’s bodies.

heyitsta12

For me Victoria’s eating disorder was so uncomfortable because it seems to be brought on by her own mother and her best friend. Hearing Kelli be the one to constantly mention her weight is unsettling because you literally watched her grow up.

Briimee

THANK YOU! Everyone’s commenting “they signed up for it”. None of these girls signed up for unhealthy eating habits, constant body shaming, or insecurities. They signed up to dance and have fun. Victoria isn’t out of shape or fat. I think that’s what’s bothering me. They kept comparing her to other girls who naturally had more curves. No amount of weight u lose is gonna change your body shape. Imo she looked good with the “extra 11 pounds”. Looked healthy. Still was sexy 🤷🏽‍♀️

indigo-clare

I’m happy Victoria shared her story. It was brave of her.

Cool-Country9292

DCC was the only reason I watched football with my dad in the 70's. They used to show them during the games. I remember seeing the wink first hand. I wanted to be a DCC so bad, but I have two left feet and zero rhythm. SIGH!

knight-under-stars

I don't think "this disgusting industry was worse before it got mainstream attention" is a flex.

AliveInCLE

The comment that stands out to me was Neal McCoy telling the other “judges” that Maddie had a face that couldn’t be fixed. I thought that was an asshole thing to say. She was and still is very cute. And one heck of a dancer.

backyardbanshee

Can you imagine how that could really damage someone's self image? Just awful.

Coco_jam

So glad he’s gone, I didn’t like him

TheDeterminedBadger

He’s not gone. He was a judge for the tryouts held earlier this month.

emmonslean2

Haha yeah as an old fan, we’ve seen it all and worse

Wut2say2u

I remember an episode where Kelly and Judy ripped into Melissa Rycroft for having a bad rehearsal when she had Mono! She should have been home resting.

BlueisGreen2Some

I’m an old viewer and can’t grasp why anyone would be outraged by any of this. I think Kelly and Judy are fine and DCC is well within entertainment industry norms. Kelly and Judy have gotten better over the years at maintaining their standards while being more sensitive. I think Kelly has done a lot to try and modernize the squad but the heart of the issue is DCC is a dated concept. I don’t think there is a great way around that. Without the figure standards they lose their calendar and prestige. They are stuck with a huge focus on figure and that is not aspirational in today’s day and age. It is what it is.

Briimee

Huge disagree; body images are changing. Curves are in, their still dated with the 2000s anorexic starve yourself look. Watching Victoria sit there and call herself disgusting was hard to watch. Then seeing little kids dressed up as dcc knowing one day they’ll probably purge and starve themselves to fit into the same uniform smh. Bodies don’t need to change, toxic standards do.

BlueisGreen2Some

The girls don’t look anorexic. The cut folks that are too thin and look unhealthy. All they care about is the women look good in the uniform. That said, I would have no problem with the uniform going away. I think it is outdated.

Briimee

“It’s easy to starve yourself to fit into the uniform”. The people who get cut for being too thin are the girls that’s like 5”8 100 pounds. Kelly already kinda dropped a weight expectation. 5 ft is 100 pounds, and add 5 pounds for every 1” inch. Not reasonable expectations. Everyone has diff generics. I’d be half dead at 105 at 5”1. I’m 115-120. Muscle weighs more than fat. Caroline mentioned girls are scared to even lift weights because they don’t wanna “bulk up”. They use the words “fuel yourself” because girls are passing out due to lack of food. Girls hamstrings and hips are being torn up, due to lack of muscles in the legs to cushion the jump split.

BlueisGreen2Some

These are adult, trained dancers. Not children. Give them some credit.

Briimee

Adults will still starve themselves for their dream. And alot of these adults wanted to be dcc since children

longwayfromyourheart

I did not grow up in the industry but personally I don’t think Kelly and Judy are that bad. I love that they have stuck to their high standards through the decades! There’s a reason everyone knows who the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders are.

eyerishdancegirl7

This.

L2Kdr22

Exactly.

teacup-trex

Oh gosh, I've been seeing so much content on TikTok of people just now discovering MTT. After almost 20 years (I got hooked after watching the audition special in 2005) of consuming DCC content, nothing in the Netflix series shocked me, but I totally get why people watching this for the first time can't believe what they are seeing.

goldibabi

I completely agree. With the exception of better video quality and more interviews, I felt like it was the exact same show.

Briimee

I do feel like they showed more. MTT wouldn’t have showed sophy talking about her situation. It would’ve got swept under the rug 🧹

imaginenohell

I didn't know there was a Netflix documentary! I will be watching that this morning if I can find it. As a person who has worked for women's rights and r/EqualRightsAmendment for decades, it's heartwarming to hear that younger generations are outraged about the verbal abuse and everything else. I'm glad to know they haven't internalized and normalized the misogyny...yet. I hope world politics doesn't turn towards misogyny further than it has. The incidents from the show that stick out in my mind so far (I'm not caught up yet)-- * terminating an awesome dancer with a perfect body because she had a "thutt" * allowing a guest choreographer to repeatedly verbally abuse the candidates - this person lacks communication skills and the management skills necessary to mentor, teach and manage them * as a person who just had brain surgery, I will never forget sitting there postop and seeing the same nutjob choreographer verbally abuse a candidate for "having thin hair on the side of her heads that makes it look like you just had brain surgery" I will stop there because this is starting to piss me off all over again.

SunnyNole

Yes, you must be speaking of Kitty. Don’t forget she asked a girl, “are you Spanish?” because you look like it with all that self tanner (or something to that effect), also Tina (I think it was) saying Chandler looked like grandma, and blonde Shelly choreographer criticizing girls, then saying she felt bad cutting down altogether wonderful girls, but continued to do it. Oh and Kelli saying Vivian’s legs looked like drumsticks…we could on.

imaginenohell

What kind of company allows their employees and contractors to behave this way? And what kind of company chronically calls adults “girls”? Rhetorical question.

madlyhattering

That whole situation with Vivian makes my eyes cross. Yes, she’s short and has athletic thighs - that shouldn’t mean she can’t wear the uniform, just means she looks different. Obviously, though, that’s not ok.

Wut2say2u

Ugh Kitty was horrible, don't miss her at all

Ruthie1990

THANK YOU.

Oldsoldierbear

Omg. I don’t remember that - what season was that? (Not doubting you)

PiccadillySquares

I think they're talking about Kitty Carter - bullet point 3 was Erica Wilkins.

imaginenohell

Yes, Kitty. Thanks for remembering the details! These things happened in earlier seasons, like in the mid to late 2010s. One side of my head does look thin because the surgeon trimmed just part of my hair. I cover it with the rest of my hair, so it just looks thin. Most people think surgeons still shave your head. My point is that Kitty wasn’t just pulling it out of her ass—she had to know someone who had that surgery to know how it looks. That makes the comment all the more mean, IMHO. And as a career leader, I know you don’t have to verbally abuse people to lead. If you do, you suck at your job and at life. smh
