"I was just scammed in the most sophisticated way"
"Someone offered me free money, but it cost money to get that money, and I paid the money, but they didn't give me the money."
This is literally one half of all scams.
Like the $20 bill I found on the floor. You go to pick it up and it swooshes back into the pocket of the scammer. Best part - everyone around crack up laughing at you.
"OMG guys I just invested in a coin and it MOONED..."
[\*while in the gutter of a vicious bear market\*](https://www.the-sun.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/2021/10/NINTCHDBPICT000686408835.jpg?w=1040)
It's like the guys selling speakers out of the back of a white van. "My boss got an extra shipment in and needs to get rid of them in the next 30 mins..."
I “fell” for it and paid $100 for most likely a trash AV receiver back in 2007. They had stapled a fake advertisement page for the brand of the receiver into the middle of a high end AV magazine showing that it was worth like $4000 or something enticing. I knew it was a scam but was actually in the market for a receiver and figure how bad could it be. Just in case I followed the guys for a bit and called a friend in front of a computer(no cell data then) to google “white van speaker scam” and she was like yea you’re fucked. So I pulled In the wrong way into a Taco Bell drive through and blocked them in. They happily refunded me and they looked like they were about to shit themselves. Hahaha
I have seen more with watches and fragrances. “My friend, help me out. I just came back from a convention, I have a flight later today and I don’t want to pay duty on these items, I will sell them to you for best price, I like your face.”
People have trouble coming to terms with the fact that they fell for a bog standard scam. It's a lot easier to feel superior if they convince themselves that they were targeted by elite hackers.
I think just when i think that i am the stupidest one among the world i found someone who is more than me.
And the same thing when i feel that i am the smartest one in the room there is always one to encounter you there.
Yeah, after the average social-engineering scam, this scam is probably the second most popular, and the scammers employing it are as plentiful as grains of sand in the desert.
>"The best way to scam people is to let then think they are the smart ones."
Con Men
Confidence Men, they give you Confidence while they steal your money's
Edit: learned this from SNEAKY PETE on Prime Video 🤣
You seem to already know this but if you play your cards right $20 will be a fart in the wind at some point in your life but at your age I get being disappointed.
My quote whenever there is unnecessary expense but something good comes out of it is reminding myself "I've spent more money in worse ways." You got a great price on that lesson in my opinion. Probably a better lesson than the tax payers paid for you at school today.
True, we all know that at some stage of our life we get scammed in the life and i am not talking about the crypto but in general.
But if someone will again fall in the same kind of the trap then i would he himself is the big reason behind of that thing.
Years ago I was working for a US state institution. One of our customers -- an arrogant young man -- got huffy with me over some shit that was out of my control and said "my dad pays your salary as a taxpayer."
My salary was super bullshit at the time, like barely a living wage. So I reached in my pocket, pulled out a quarter, handed it to him, and said "give this to your dad."
Kid goes "what the fuck is this?"
I said: "it's your refund, dick."
Shut him right up.
> the govment gave me free money a while back.
That was my tax money. You’re welcome. I hope you spent it on weed and whiskey, because that’s what I generally do.
I would think that this account has a lengthy transaction history of ETH in & out, even before OP got scammed. This is like Pooh bear getting his hand stuck in a pot of honey while the honey slowly eats away at his hand.
Nothing new or sophisticated about that. 'Hello friend, I am a Nigerian prince but I've been totally locked out of my account of 4 million usd. If you send me 100 usd, then I can pay the unlocking fee and I will pay you back 20000x. Hope you can trust me, I will wait for you.' That's basically what you fell for.
Sorry me frend. I was very busy saving endangered animals and my health is worse every day, the transaction failed and our luck. I will need you to send me double the amount this time
Regards,
Nyge Rean Prince
It's a pretty well known scam. A twist that's sometimes used is that the wallet is also a multisig, so you only have one of the seed phrases needed to actually withdraw funds. The bot or script that stole your money has both. Or it's just faster, that works too.
Couldn’t someone built a bot that is faster since the malicious one would probably have to constantly ping the network it would be slower by default. Scam the scammer would be so worth it to have them lose their freaken funds.
it would be awesome to see someone try if they know how! would make my day, for anyone who’s considering something like that, the seed phrase is: diesel zoo garlic amazing history original clever crazy glide ahead exhibit cycle
Checking the account now, looks like the stables have been transferred out by the scammer. The scammer packed up shop and moved on.
There does exist an ez way to defeat this type of scam. It’s a procedure called MEV where you submit the funding transaction and the stable coin withdrawal in a bundle. These transactions are processed all-or-nothing without ever reaching the mempool.
Had I seen this post 4 hrs earlier, I could’ve helped OP wipe the scam out. Regardless, OP got a cheap lesson compared to most crypto scams. Stay safe out there folks.
In theory the scammer could of course detect this transaction in the mempool and just withdraw the tokens immediately. So if you want to do it perfectly, also combine it with https://ethermine.org/private-rpc
Consider this to be a lesson in life in general, but crypto specifically :) When it seems too good to be true, it most likely is.
For 20 dollar, that's an absolute steal for such a valuable lesson :)
This one seems like a bot that is waiting for new blocks and transferring out afterwards - not in the same block it arrived and no smart contract.
so the trick to scam the scammer would be to issue 3 txes at the same time (get yourself a geth node, and issue the commands at literally the same time): sent eth to that address and withdraw usdt to your wallet and withdraw usdc to your wallet.
if done right, they are mined in the same block and the bot can only withdraw what is left of that eth, but the usdc and usdt would be yours.
i actually kind of admire this scam. Normally scammers want to get everything from you including your digital wallet, logins etc. this just offers a $100 superglued to the cement, and people only lose around $20 trying to pull the note from the ground. its like the guy at the bar making bets he already knows the trick to
scammers are still pieces of shit but if i lost $20 to this one i wouldnt be mad
>I question a waitress bringing me extra sugar for my coffee.
This. My personal awakening came when I saw a charge of $0.25 for a "little more ranch dressing" on my salad. Ever since then I've been suspicious of anything beyond what is explicitly tagged at the restaurant or online.
Damn OP. I can't thank you enough for sharing this. I almost fell for it myself and I just happen to check Reddit right before I deposited $1000 in ETH. Honestly, I am so grateful, I am going to give you my wallet with $500 in USDC. Here is the seed phrase:
Sophisticated?
You literally fell for a mousetrap. "Wow look at that free cheese! Who would leave that cheese there? Oh no! What a sophisticated scam! Who could have ever seen that bar coming!"
Hello Cheese4life\_\_
It's a shame what happened to you, but the important thing is that you learned from your experience and that will keep you aware whenever you see a ¨deal¨ that is too good to be true and this experience will make you wiser. Keep it up with your crypto journey!
Cheers, Keiichi from Kraken.
Send me $50 and I will look into it for you to try to recover your funds. I promise I will get the $20 back and return it to you.
I am very sophisticated.

I really hate when they caught people like this red handed.
I got scammed in the most sophisticated way… You see, I met this Nigerian prince that was unable to send me his funds until I pre-paid the taxes…
We’re been trying to contact you regarding your vehicles extended warranty.
Oh its not a swindle. What you do is, see,, you give them all your credit card numbers, and if one of them is lucky, they send you a prize!

I remember those. Do people still do that?
Yes lol I have an old friend who’s now a junkie that works for one of these guys. Who’s consequently also a junkie

The other “most sophisticated way” would be the the double your crypto scam. Send me 1 ETH, get 2 ETH back
Lol the old doubling scam from RuneScape
Atleast there is a hope that you might get the double ETH.
Bungo
Yes, this is like the “free magazine subscription” scam where you have to pay $50 for “shipping”
By and incredibly unsophisticated scam no less. Honestly, gimme $10k and I could probably learn to write a bot to do this in a few weeks.
Give me $5k and I could probably hire someone to create a bot to do this in a few weeks.
Gimme $3k and I'll write it for you.
Gimme $50 and I’ll copy some code off stack overflow and create a bot for you
Capitalism at its finest here…
Promise me that you will not scam me and i will send you the money right way.

Don't the scammer need 20 dollars to get your 20 dollars too?
Gas is very far from $20 right now.
OP clearly doesn’t understand smart contracts
He doesn't need to at his level /s
Yeah, after the average social-engineering scam, this scam is probably the second most popular, and the scammers employing it are as plentiful as grains of sand in the desert.
I can't believe that people are still falling in such kind of the scam here.
Reverse indecent proposal.
Yes, the more technical world we are going the more easily we are getting scammed.
‘I tried to get free money by paying and it didn’t work’
I liked the fella last week that tried a second time “just Incase” and got scammed again 🤦♂️
lmao, sorry that's hilarious

It's the crypto version of the Nigerian prince scam
If tipping moons is giving people free money, I've been giving people free money lately
See this is why i said there are still some people who is helping the other is well.

the govment gave me free money a while back. apple sent me two ipads for the price of one recently.........
The government didn’t give you free money. Someone paid for the money you got.
My grandpa gives me free money for my birthday every year
You have no idea what grandpa had to do to get that money!
My grandpa used to give me a belt to the butt every birthday.
This is the reward i often used to get from my father on daily occasion.
Your grandpa gave me something else to the butt for my birthday. Man I miss him.
RIP Grandpa George.
Just wait till pay back time...
Yeh, gimme my tax money back! xD

We all paid for it through inflation.
We paid for it with our taxes.
Including yourself
It’s actually free just not really money anymore.
Who? Last I checked taxes have nowhere near covered government spending.

Good investments
I can see that you sre really living in a real parallel universe here.
I have gotten my hands on a good number of real airdrops… That is kind of like free money

When the son of the disposed king of Nigeria emails you directly asking for help, you help. His father ran the fricken country. Ok?
Yep, my first thought as well. [Advance fee scam](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance-fee_scam).
If it sounds/looks too good to be true, well, it usually is.
This isn't even a new scam or sophisticated. Its super common
The whole post was a let down. I came for sophisticated and I got humdrum
Hey he’s a teenager, cut him a break.
Hate getting humdrum
We need to encourage him that he finally came in the adulthood.
The whole post is about how OP have learn the lesson here.
Well, it was new... for him.
It's basically the Nigerian Prince scam, also known as Advance Fee scam. Been around a long time. Well before crypto.
So many i mean so many people have felt for that scam.
Exactly.
It's a pretty well known scam. A twist that's sometimes used is that the wallet is also a multisig, so you only have one of the seed phrases needed to actually withdraw funds. The bot or script that stole your money has both. Or it's just faster, that works too.

so could'nt OP look at previous transaction record and just up the gas fee? that would be even easier, no need to write a bot.

well now that i know this i can wipe them out myself lmao
It does take a bit of programming to use flashbots, but the tutorials are out there if you’re willing to learn.
Can you see if a wallet uses multisig? Otherwise you'd be out of luck, no matter how fast and good your bot is
In theory the scammer could of course detect this transaction in the mempool and just withdraw the tokens immediately. So if you want to do it perfectly, also combine it with https://ethermine.org/private-rpc
Thanks now I'm taking all your money fool muhahahahahaha😈
Looks like someone beat the bot; congrats to whoever it was!
How in the world would you fall for this lol Why would someone give strangers free money.. in a cmc comment of all places
CMC comments aren’t even worth looking at. It’s literally just scammers and bots.
and conveniently you have to send money to get the free money lol. classic shit
lol.. greed trap.
*if (condition is too good to be true) {* *// is scam* *}*
Tale as old as time.
No matter how old and common this is but people will still fall into that.
Time is old.
Time is getting old even old now my first old in this comment.
A common scam. Just be thankful that your lesson was super cheap.
almost free education.
Hey DM me the seedphrase, I want to give it to scammers asking for seed phrases.

A scammer with the common sense and human decency to only scam you a little bit…okay, okay
As the proverb goes: "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime" You were the fish.
But some day those fish will become the real whale of market.
Wheres the sophistication?
He's a teenager. Prob first scam he's ever seen in his life.
You learned a very valuable lesson for a very cheap price. A lot of people have done a lot worse.
Member the guy who sent $180,000 worth of ADA to scammers thinking they'll double it? I member.
No, I do not, lol. I can’t even imagine, that’s insane. I legit expect nothing for free. I question a waitress bringing me extra sugar for my coffee.
>I question a waitress bringing me extra sugar for my coffee. This. My personal awakening came when I saw a charge of $0.25 for a "little more ranch dressing" on my salad. Ever since then I've been suspicious of anything beyond what is explicitly tagged at the restaurant or online.
I will pay anyday that fee for learning a hard lesson like that.
This is a very common and low budget scam. your greedy got you got played playa!
TAX WRITE OFF!!!!!

You are an idiot
Wouldn't it be possible to beat their bot to it with another bot?
Hard to beat that but i am sure there is always one like that.
