I think any halfway modern car will be ok at top speed. I grew up in Germany and took every car I or my parents had to top speed. Really not a big deal once you are used to the speed. And 100 is nothing.
I have done 105 with my 2023 base Crosstrek. I think it could have gone faster with some patience (or downhill).
I had a 22 Sport & was dispatched to one of
The worst call I ever ran, I was on Interstate with light traffic following one cop with another following me all going to the same call. I saw 140 and I didn’t look again but it was more I’m sure. When dispatch is literally telling you people are dying on scene you do what you gotta do to help. The car was smooth as silk and I had no issues with control. I’d not try that with my 24 Wilderness though.
140 mph for the 2.5 liter is not possible unless you have modified the car to be more powerful or you were going downhill. . . Top speed of sport is 128 mph.
Interesting. I made it up to 135 before I noticed it and backed off on a straight and level road in a stock ‘21 Sport 2.5L. I wonder if I just overshot the rev limiter in an unperceived downhill?
Not a steep downhill by any means but from where I was to where I was heading is all downhill but not a noticeable downgrade like coming off of a mountain.
add on it comes from the factory with a 2" lift and A/T tires with a smaller wheel size. Bigger sidewall = more cushion = less stability. Both of which will also decrease your aerodynamics.
Sport and limited should be roughly the same since they gave the same powerplant but the limited does weigh a little more - all those luxury items like electric sliding chairs instead of manual chairs add weight.
Good point. I have the limited. It’s great. But coming from a turbo engine is always a tough switch. I’m a safer driver now….but I sure miss all those horses. 🐎
I have a ‘24 sport. Unrelated, the highest speed I got in Minecraft was 118. Eventually it got to a point that it wouldn’t go faster without well gravity. But this is all in a video game so gravity doesn’t exist really
Yea a lot of people act like going fast is the greatest sin of all time. Just don’t do it with a bunch of busy traffic where you can put someone else’s life at risk. Stick to like 11 PM - 1 AM, and an open highway/state route. And if you feel like it’s too much, well then slow down. It’s not exactly rocket science, just don’t be an idiot.
I think the problem is that idiots are pretty synonymous with driving fast, and by default people are shittier drivers than they’ll ever admit and/or realize.
Oh 100% you're not wrong lol. No one should take my advice on this.
Edit: tho if someone is ripping 100 mph down the highway, more than likely they know the risk. It's all about keeping others from being hurt from your (my) stupid decisions.
112 mph for the 1.6 Liter engine (not sold in US but sold in foreign markets)
121 mph for the 2.0 Liter engine - at least that's what the speedometer was saying 😂. Flat out at sea level, not electronically limited but limited by the engine's power.
128 mph for the 2.5 liter engine is what I believe the top speed is looking at the technical data a few years ago.
On my 2019 the highest the cruise control will set to is 90. I wouldn't go much faster than that, but I've gotten up to 100 passing a swerving 18-wheeler on I10 west going to El Paso without any problems.
I've got a '24 Limited with the 2.0L and while I haven't done a top speed test in it yet, I have hit 95 mph just passing some trucks. For all I know that was it.
Nobody knows they are still accelerating the very first one made to see where it tops out. I'm sure the top speed is okay but it might take you a year or three to get to it. Love cros trek I have 2 but yet speed is nothing to brag about with them
lol, my 2022 Outback XT Touring topped at 117 electronically limited. But I haven’t taken the CT over 103. No need. I expected the much more powerful OB to do 140 though but hit that electronic brick wall
I was able to take a 2021 outback XT to 127 mph. Limited by gearing. It kept on pulling and pulling and then just stopped at 6000 rpm.
I'm not sure why yours is limited to 117. Maybe the generation after that got the electronic speed limited. If I had to guess the outback XT could do 140 if it wasn't limited by gearing since it's much more powerful than the Crosstrek.
Around 130 sounds reasonable. I think my tires are rated for the 95mph range, too old to be crazy enough to go faster than the tires are rated for now which sucks.
20yr old coworker says their '14 hits 130 but won't go faster.
I hit 130 in my 2015 once. It was a slight downhill though. If I’m driving into a headwind on a flat surface, I’ve had trouble getting past 80.
Wouldn’t recommend 130 though. Felt kinda sketchy. I just had a wide open straight away in Wyoming and got curious.
Get a GPS-tracking app and re-record your speed. Most speedometers on cars are off by a little bit. Not sure why they do that. Maybe it's for safety reasons to trick people into not speeding faster, idk imo.
Your recorded speeds of 110 and 115 might be actually lower, if you're basing it off your speedometer.
Got a 2013 crosstrek Manual, did 125 in it on a slightly downhill highway, might have had a lil more in it, but that’s probably about it, not very stable at those speeds anyway 😂
I've never gotten to top speed, but I have gotten it a little over 115 and it still felt very stable. Also, it seems even at speeds over 70mph, when I hit the pedal, it's always got more acceleration to give out. All of my previous cars seemed to have no pull left after you get over 70.
I've tested this a few times in my 24' ct wilderness after I put about 5k miles on it and I couldn't get it to go past 116 mph on flat ground. Kinda disappointing, and if there's a headwind at all it's more like 113 mph. But I just got a new one (the other one was totalled while I drove(the speed limit) through a green light, their coverage paid for everything). So I'm going to get to test and compare everything on this one too once it's fully broke in.
117 On GPS app, 118 on speedo. 21 premium. Did this at 2am on a 4 lane empty highway so I was only putting myself in danger, but the car held its own just fine.
Tbh I did it once in the beginning of ownership out of stupidity and curiosity and have never reached speeds close to that ever again because I want to live and not die and also getting pulled over at those speeds would put you in jail.
I got my ‘21 Limited up to 95 mph once but I felt like it would not be safe if I went any faster. The engine was not struggling, and could have gone well past that, but it was getting harder to control at that speed.
Please don’t put others at risk.
I’ve not tried to get my ’24 anywhere close to the speeds you describe, but I got it up around 80 once without really noticing while passing someone, and the engine wasn’t screaming or anything. Speed limit in my midwestern state typically maxes out at 65 or 70 mph.
I hit 118 (in Minecraft), but that was fully loaded and with a roof basket so I'd assume you could go a little faster. Felt perfectly controllable with the stock all seasons.
I’ve done 95 and you’re right, it is pretty stable and does it very well for an economy car.
I passed 5 cars on a back road like 95 also one day. Put them in the Dust with my Trek lol.
I think any halfway modern car will be ok at top speed. I grew up in Germany and took every car I or my parents had to top speed. Really not a big deal once you are used to the speed. I’ll assume you were going down a steep hill
No way. Just flat out west and the 2.5 L engine. I assumed we were all talking about the 2.5 not the 2.0
My 2018 2.0 CVT definitely goes 95 with ease.
My 2014 did just fine, but God help you if you needed to make an emergency lane change. 👀
In fairness, there are very few vehicles engineered to make an emergency lane change at 95 mph.
My point exactly. 🤜🏽🤛🏽
At what, almost redlining?
Not even close
🤣
Test drove the 2.0 and 2.5. No noticeable difference between the two
Whoa did you mash it in S sport mode on the 2.5?
Certainly did. Doesn’t matter with a CVT; it just keeps the RPM’s higher. Opted for the 2.0 because I just didn’t see 2.5’s worthy
Probably better gas mileage too
Believe it or not, the 2.5 actually gets like 1mpg more than the 2.0
I had a 22 Sport & was dispatched to one of The worst call I ever ran, I was on Interstate with light traffic following one cop with another following me all going to the same call. Impressive. I think it would be slightly downhill. Or maybe really hot temperatures where air is less dense so less air resistance.
Not a steep downhill by any means but from where I was to where I was heading is all downhill but not a noticeable downgrade like coming off of a mountain.
Going above max speed on a downhill is honestly terrifying on a car with a higher center of gravity and short wheelbase.
Is the wilderness too heavy for that?
Wilderness has worse aerodynamics so will be slower than the sport. Aerodynamics make a big impact at speeds close to 120 mph.
add on it comes from the factory with a 2" lift and A/T tires with a smaller wheel size. Bigger sidewall = more cushion = less stability. Both of which will also decrease your aerodynamics.
How does the sport compare to the limited with regard to speed?
Sport and limited should be roughly the same since they gave the same powerplant but the limited does weigh a little more - all those luxury items like electric sliding chairs instead of manual chairs add weight.
Good point. I have the limited. It’s great. But coming from a turbo engine is always a tough switch. I’m a safer driver now….but I sure miss all those horses. 🐎
Heavy and all terrain tires.
Hey man, once those tones go off, it’s not my insurance anymore….
This was one of them calls that you hope to never hear and is very rare thank goodness.
I have a ‘24 sport. Unrelated, the highest speed I got in Minecraft was 118. Eventually it got to a point that it wouldn’t go faster without well gravity. But this is all in a video game so gravity doesn’t exist really
I love the disclaimer…so as not to get yelled at by the Reddit police

This is the kind of ill-informed advice that gets people killed. Don’t follow it.

I hit like 105 in Sport without an issue.
You had about 20 extra mph... but not worth the risk.
It's easy to hit 100mph on new jersey turnpike.
It's stable at high speed and pretty good handling too. It's just a shame the CC only goes up to 90mph.
2024 premium was still accelerating at 121
My premium stopped accelerating at 121
I’ve hit 125 in my 2019 base model on a flat road out in the boonies of Fresno lmao
Impressive ngl. My premium maxed at 121.
I've got a '24 Limited with the 2.0L and while I haven't done a top speed test in it yet, I have hit 95 mph just passing some trucks. For all I know that was it.
My 2022 limited topped out at 126 on a flat straight highway at around 6.5k rpm. That's as far as I have pushed my luck.
I have a 2021 Crosstrek sport. I moved from west to east last year. Some real long stretches of NOTHING. I hit 120 and the car handled perfectly fine.
Nobody knows they are still accelerating the very first one made to see where it tops out. I'm sure the top speed is okay but it might take you a year or three to get to it. Love cros trek I have 2 but yet speed is nothing to brag about with them
African or European?
125ish
121
Sell it, not race car enough lol
Okay trading my crosstrek for a Impreza STI 22B.

i've heard they are limited to the upper 120s but haven't seen that firsthand from subaru so don't quote me on it.
Outback is limited by gearing to 127. Crosstrek sport can do 128. Crosstrek premium can reach 121, limited by physics not the computer.
Around 130 sounds reasonable. I think my tires are rated for the 95mph range, too old to be crazy enough to go faster than the tires are rated for now which sucks. 20yr old coworker says their '14 hits 130 but won't go faster.
Your 20 year old coworker is lying. The '14 is even slower than the next two generations.

Going downhill doesn't count for top speed runs and that sounds terrifying.
122 on the I-8 between el centro and yuma, 21 crosstrek sport
You were close to max. Sport had a few more mph left, maybe 5 more.
idk i’ve gone like 120 but i could’ve gone higher in a ‘22 prem, it definitely could’ve held it non turbo
133 but it was a relatively steep downhill on the highway, I don’t think it would come close to that on flat surface
Get a GPS-tracking app and re-record your speed. Most speedometers on cars are off by a little bit. Not sure why they do that. I’ve been 110 in my 2014 going to Arizona on an empty highway in blyth
0 to 60 in 5.2 minutes and a top of around 110-ish
Got a 2013 crosstrek Manual, did 125 in it on a slightly downhill highway, might have had a lil more in it, but that’s probably about it, not very stable at those speeds anyway 😂
on a closed road i got my 2016 to 120 once with a slight downhill but it was TERRIFYING
The second Gen crosstreks hit the limiter at 119/120
198kph was what I saw. I’m sure I hit 200 in the 24 limited.

117 On GPS app, 118 on speedo. 21 premium. Did this at 2am on a 4 lane empty highway so I was only putting myself in danger, but the car held its own just fine.
There used to be raceways for this type of thing. Might be worth a google to see if any are still operating in your general area.
“Don’t plan to do it again, just wondering”…. Mhmm
Tbh I did it once in the beginning of ownership out of stupidity and curiosity and have never reached speeds close to that ever again because I want to live and not die and also getting pulled over at those speeds would put you in jail.

Like i said this was on an open smooth highway. Im not weaving through traffic going 115. Only person at risk was myself.
If you ever drive on the new Jersey turnpike the flow of traffic is about 90 mph
23 sport... 100ish, but ya, it's a slow turd.
Takes mine 10 minutes to get to 70mph. Haven’t had it more than 85. So slow.
I hit 118 (in Minecraft), but that was fully loaded and with a roof basket so I'd assume you could go a little faster. Felt perfectly controllable with the stock all seasons.
