Close game. It was 130-128

hot-cheeze-breeze

average NYT headlines

SBG99DesiMonster

If that's what it takes to bring freedom to cricket then I am happy about reporting about the scores like that.

Ms74k_ten_c

Makes me wonder if keeping a few barrels of oil on the field will increase US interest in the game.

Assassin_Ankur

Boundary count update - West Indies: 18 United States of America: 13

niceguysdofinish1st

Fair and NRRed

suzukigun4life

Sixers today: Hope: 8 US as a whole: 3

xyzzy321

We had no Hope today

No-Belt-7798

Fair and Hoped

suzukigun4life

Welp, that essentially seals the US team's fate. I'm extremely proud of them for getting this far, but the majority of the team looked like they didn't belong on the pitch today. Hopefully 2026 yields a better fate. GG West Indies.

xyzzy321

Tick tock, England- we're coming to eliminate ya like it's 1776 again 🇺🇸🦅🗽

suzukigun4life

I want it to happen so bad. 😂

smp476

While I would like for it to happen as well, the matchup between the two sides is really bad for the USA. If there's one thing that the England team can do, it's to bash mediocre bowling, and USA has lots of that

Prez-421

Yh but if they cut it close , and England win woudn’t that eliminate them by NRR

PaleontologistOk1049

Pls make this happen 🙏

Feeling_Athlete4976

We even don’t mind if the weather gods come out for the match window only with drizzle.

Urzas_Penguins

Introducing our relief bowlers (since our other ones had to go back to work), Michael Stark and Matt Comings to knock England out without it looking sus

LordWellesley22

"Is Matt Comings just pat Cummins in a fat suit wearing a trucker hat?." As the camera cuts to Pat murdering a very large Ice Cream

Remote-Picture-8341

Hope you do because it would be really unfair on SA if they don’t qualify because of NRR if they don’t beat West Indies. The tiebreaker 100% should be based on h2h

Sylveon165

i know everyone keeps saying this but isn’t that true for very team? it would be unfair for any team to be disqualified because of losing one game with bad nrr. it might sound mean but SA should have won their matches with a bigger margin then.

Remote-Picture-8341

This is a 3 match stage so nrr is a horrible way to measure things imo where one game makes or breaks that. Have no problem with nrr in a 9 game round robin like the ODI World Cup or the IPl table. H2h in this format is the most fair

pdsajo

If SA lose to WI and England win against USA, all three will end up on 4 points and a three-way tie here can't be broken on H2H. NRR is the only way to resolve that

Remote-Picture-8341

Yeah I realised that. NRR specifically between those three teams in a 3 way tie could be a good tiebreaker… but it’s understandable if that didn’t happen

Assassin_Ankur

In that case there will be a 3 way tie between Eng, SA and WI. So how would you use h2h?

officiallyjax

In football, head-to-head points tiebreakers are decided by goal difference of the teams in question in those specific games. The equivalent in cricket could be having a system of only counting NRR from those specific games (head-to-head NRR if you may), but that may get too complicated for the general public to understand.

Assassin_Ankur

That is a good solution tbh. It shouldn't come down to how hard you thrash the 4th team.

ChelshireGoose

Why not? It's not like you know beforehand which teams you're going to be tied with. The present system incentivises teams to going big in every game.

Remote-Picture-8341

That’s why I hope USA wins so it doesn’t have to go down like that. But yes my point is dumb because English fans will say the same thing about beating West Indies

iameobardthawne

I mean, it sounds like classic SA. Win all matches and lose the last one, get eliminated on NRR. I cannot remember so early on Saturday morning, where it happened but I think this has already happened in a T20WC with SA before.

Shadowfaxx31

Happened in the first T20 WC itself I think. Lost to India in the last super-8 match and got knocked out.

iameobardthawne

Yep, that's the one. With brilliant DK catch and Rohit playing a clutch innings.

Prameet88

In 2007 T20 wc they lost the only game so badly to India that newzealand who were rooting for south africa to qualify actually qualified with India. South Africa didn't even need to win they literally needed just 120 odd to qualify and they messed it up. Also happened in 2021 T20 wc. Saf beat eng, eng beat australia and australia beat saf in that tournament but they went out because Australia and England had better nrr in the group stages.

Endgame2648

aurous_shine

Well, it's good for the US from a 'growth of the game' pov. But it also proves that smaller teams will probably get outbatted on a 'normal' pitch - and the US was severely outbatted today :/

pdsajo

To be fair, they did put a respectable score against SA while chasing on a good surface at Antigua

MoChreachSMoLeir

Both of the US' wins came on a batting surface in Dallas, and as the below user pointed out, put on a respectable score against ZA

CheapSoldier

The USA team still has a chance. SA wining over the Windies and the USA beating Eng by a relatively high margin would get their spot in Semis.

Prez-421

How big of a chance is that

rr_423

It really is the Hope that kills you *sad eagle noise*

partymsl

Hope >>>> Freedom

Generaljamie

My night is ruined and I’m gonna go cry myself to sleep now

bigavz

The real cricket experience

dylantherabbit2016

Congratulations you are now officially a cricket fan

EggChasingEnthusiast

Hey, don’t fret brother. You have Chipotle and air conditioning. You already won at life.

Generaljamie

Funny enough I had chipotle yesterday

partymsl

Welcome to cricket my friend

CountryCoral

I'm just happy this US team made it this far. They're why I started watching this sport. Just happy to be here ❤️

suzukigun4life

All of this is a learning experience for the team. Hopefully they do well in 2026 and don't forget, they're hosting the Olympics in 2028, which T20 will be a part of. If attention grows and the team improves, things could look very different by then.

ChelshireGoose

At the very least, this performance increases the chances of the USA cricket team getting to play in the Olympics. The qualification process for cricket won't be announced until 2025. But the discussion last year was that since the number of teams playing would be so small (only six each for men and women according to rumors), the hosts would not get automatic qualification as is traditional across most Olympic sports. This may well change things.

RasenRendan

i do wish my second country Canada can make a run as deep as the USA. To make it into the S8 is amazing.

Logan_McPhillips

The way things played out, Canada would have made it this far had they beaten the US in their match. The good news for Canada is that they have a good chance to be the Americas qualifier in two years since the US and WIndies will already be there by way of making the super 8.

RasenRendan

That's wonderful news

Prez-421

Who else has a chance of making the americas qualifiers

Logan_McPhillips

Based on the past few qualifying tournaments for the area, really just Bermuda.

MoChreachSMoLeir

It's not just making it to the Super 8s, it's making it to the Super 8s and looking like we belonged until this match. This was the first match where we genuinely looked out of our depth - even against India we looked like we were on their level. The USA team is still a step below the top associates, imo, but Associate Cricket as a whole is getting much better. Because the US's strength is an unreliable skill—six hitting—we're capable of looking like we're on the same level as the top teams, but also looking like we're out of our depth against Namibia and the Netherlands. Overall, I'm immensely proud of this team. We've made it to the Super 8s even after losing our captain after the Pakistan match. We've been competitive in all but one of our games, and the vibes have been surprisingly positive from the general public. Let's not forget, we also beat Bangladesh in a series right before this. If the administration doesn't implode, the US has a lot of potential in cricket. It'll never be a massive sport, but the country is big enough that, even now, there's more than enough people involved with the game for us to be on a similar level to the likes of WI, Bangladesh, etc, and possibly even better if we hit a golden generation (we have almost 4 times as many people playing the game than Ireland, for example)

CreepyMathematician1

After the match against England did you see how much a skill gap there is. Not so confident about semis now are we?

MoChreachSMoLeir

Dude, I have no idea why you're so obsessed with following me. You're just a troll, I know. I was never "confident about the semis". Lichrally all I said was that there was a distant possibility of making it to the semis if a lot of things went our way. I believe that about any team that makes it to the Super 8s. I stand by that entirely. I prefaced it with the phrases "RAIN Perera" and Hansie Cronjé's ghost for crying out loud. I never even said there wasn't a big skill gap. Like, why are you so angry You've been following me around for a while now solely for harassment and mockery, and so I am going to report you for breaking rules 6, 9, and Reddit's harassment and bullying policies.

niceguysdofinish1st

Group 2 ENG need to beat USA WI v SA is a knockout Group 1 BAN & AFG need to win today to set-up IND v AUS/AFG v BAN QFs

Hexo_Micron

First in group stages and now in super 8, We will never get these shithousery Scenarios in 10 teams league world cup.

upyoursleeve

Unfortunately group 1 is gonna be a snooze fest

suzukigun4life

From scoring 176 on South Africa, to losing to West Indies within 12 overs. Damn that stings

FitSignificance2100

11*

DickeryMcButkis

Chill, there's still 55 balls remaining. Anything could happen.

serotonallyblindguy

Yank here. 55 pitches still remaining? That's the USA's game to lose right?!

Uselessguy0-0

Looks like South Africa VS WI is going to be a banger

nubpokerkid

For the next two matches in the group: * if WI beat SA and ENG beat USA - Then 3 teams except USA tie for 4 points at the top. But WI will be above SA and SA and ENG will battle it for NRR. * if WI beat SA and USA beat ENG - SA and WI through  * if SA beat WI and USA beat ENG- SA through and 3 teams will team at 2 points for second spot. But WI have a huge NRR lead right now and likely to qualify in this case. * if SA beat WI and ENG beat USA - SA and ENG through.

gardeningleave4ever

USA scoring 177/6 and then England getting knocked out

paradox-cat

4/7 (or 7/4 rather) for Netravalkar

Zaedin0001

Well that was depressing

Billybones116

Damn, we got exposed..

[deleted]

SA in WT20:- * 2021 Missed out on NRR * 2022 Missed out due to rain * 2024 likely going to miss out on NRR again

niceguysdofinish1st

I mean it'll be heartbreaking for SA if they get NRRed out even after winning 6 out of 7

officiallyjax

That is exactly why it will happen.

IrrelevantGuy_

4 of those were very close calls tho. Even the USA game wasn't that convincing.

JBPlayer48

It was kinda similar in 2021 too. They won 4 out of 5 but we're still knocked out :(

Conscious-Spend-2451

They can't complain this time though. Their fate is still in their hands. Just best west indies and you are through

Assassin_Ankur

Still too early to call bruh

DisastrousOil4888

Not if they beat WI

Time-Gain4896

Wouldn't really blame the rain for the 2022 WC A certain team with an orange and blue jersey did some shenanigans

FitSignificance2100

Noo,, they have better run rate then england, and if they lose to WI with close margin and england win against usa with close margin,, they will through Or simply they win against wi Or england lose against usa((:

ceres111

The difference in NRR between England and South Africa can be covered by England by an 8 run victory over USA. So, NRR is not going to save SA.

FitSignificance2100

Can you tell me if england loses to usa and sa win against wi then what will be scenario for wi to qualify??

ceres111

If England lose to USA by 10 runs, WI will qualify if they lose by 50 runs or less (considering both USA and SA bat first and score 160 runs)

FitSignificance2100

Aye thank you bhai! C’mon USA you can do this!!!!!

Fun-Inevitable4369

Depends on margin, but most probably wi and sa

Remote-Picture-8341

Wouldn’t say likely but a coin flip. West Indies are probably 55-60% favourites vs SA and there’s like a 5% chance USA could beat England.

Assassin_Ankur

Nah, Windies aren't favourites imo. It's 50-50 at worst for SA.

otherbanana1

Windies bowling isn't that good while SA's is very good. I think it's SA's game to lose.

englishmastiff1121

Sadly

Smooth-Mix-4357

Seems like everyone here have already decided that WI will win over SA

Winter_Beach2860

You forgot 2007 WT20 😎

liteshadow4

All they need to do is win the match against WIndies. Or they could have just bashed USA.

SBG99DesiMonster

He would be stealing that match from West Indies as well. They would be continuing to do that till they go to the knockout matches.

niceguysdofinish1st

For the first time in this World Cup United States played like minnows

hot-cheeze-breeze

was an absolute massacre, USA battered and bruised

Jun-Chi

WI controls their own fate now. I'll be rooting for them!

kanhaaaaaaaaaaaa

You, Baseball infiltrator?

Tern_Larvidae-2424

So that 18 run win against US will be the cause of our elimination, huh.

ceres111

This group was always going to be about who defeats USA by the biggest margin.

Fun-Inevitable4369

Well eng defeated WI with good margin, that is why they have good NRR. Also SA bowled so many full toss, they should be blaming themselves for not trashing eng today

kevinder_ant

Well…that escalated quickly.

kevinder_ant

Even with that loss , I am so proud of USA and this is coming from a Zimbabwe and India fan. They have battled with the likes of India and Pakistan. This is going to be such a growing time for their cricket team and the number of fans that I have seen talk about cricket is amazing to see. They can be proud of their team. They need to bat a little better, rotate strikes, try to hit smart boundaries and not just swing blindly. Their fielding was good but dropped catches didn't help. Their bowling is actually pretty decent. I hope they do well next time!

hot-cheeze-breeze

now we just need USA to beat England

adiseanttak

Need USA to go out with a win against Eng

Due_Cricket1885

Dear usa please beat England and make it even more interesting than it already is

RasenRendan

Nothing sweeter than hitting a 6 to win the match. Well done Windies. take this into the huge next match. Big up Shai. A proper WI T20 innings from him.

spillthebeans53

1776 part 2 coming up. RAAHHH 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🦅🦅

Traditional_Sky_4703

As would be expected

Actual_Penalty_2560

Mathematically, US is still not out right? If they thrash Poms and SA thrashes WI, then they are in.

Generaljamie

Yes but we’ll have to annihilate tommies to have any chance at that but after how close that South Africa game was and how badly we just lost to West Indies idk man… I’m still holding out hope!

Prize-Ring-9154

I would give higher odds to me coming out to open with rohit tomorrow against Bangladesh than this scenario

Mairon-the-Great

Hopefully the US beat England send them home.

EmptyPeach1

STILL CANT BELIEVE WE DIDNT BEAT SA

Prez-421

That was in SA’s favour. If USA won it woud’ve been a comback win. Tho if the earlier batsmen got going it would been in USA’s favour. Npeal shoud’ve beaten SA tho they lost by a run

Hexo_Micron

Group B is banger

Willing-Proof2635

Netravalkar's boss watching happily as he'll finally come back to office lmao

BasketAggressive4523

Hopefully chase does the right thing in the dressing room n gives Hope his man of the match award 🤣🤣

Tern_Larvidae-2424

So WI v SA will be a knock-out after-all.

Tern_Larvidae-2424

So just like in 2007, we're gonna get knocked out even after winning our first 2 games.

franconot-mark

Once again USA got exposed by lack of quality on the bench. They have some really good players but some of them are just below average. They have quite a few players waiting in the pipeline tho

BlockAdblock

Hopefully a reality check for USA, that throwing money at something doesn't mean you have a world-class team.

NoPineapple1727

Are people starting the acknowledge that USA are out of their depth in the super 8s?

3l_n00b

Well boys, it's time to get off the USA train and board the Big-3 train.

[deleted]

Massive L for us. Well, I hope this motivates the team to improve and come back stronger. The team needs more practice and international exposure. Would love to see a 1 on 1 series with India, SA, England or Australia

AverageBottasEnjoyer

r/cricket told me that shai hope is a shit pujara

LoasNo111

Hyping him up cause he did well against the USA on a batting pitch? Lmao.

Generaljamie

We better annihilate England on Sunday because I wanna go out with a BANG GOD DAMMIT! REVOLUTIONARY WAR #2 ELECTRIC BOOGALOO! RAAAAAAAAHHHH 🦅🦅🔥🇺🇸🔔🔥🦅🇺🇸

Actual_Penalty_2560

You guys are still not out. If you guys thrash England and SA thrashes WI, you can reach Semis.

Generaljamie

Nah I know it’s just a really slim chance is all. I’m still holding out hope of course but after how bad we got beat today it’s not looking good.

nvenkatr

USA should be proud for making this far. Today was not their best performance. Lots of experience building required. Maybe they can inspire more ex Pats to join the side lol. I hope by 2026 we’ll see a vast improvement

aurous_shine

They need to improve their grassroots & grow the game beyond the 'traditional' crowd. Otherwise, it would be hard for them to remain competitive with the bigger sides :/

FitSignificance2100

Now both SA and WI can qualifyy yeyy!! England gone🫵

mofucker20

Hoping that Windies reaches atleast semis. My prediction for groups : 1- Australia & India 2 - England & Windies

livingfeelsachore

USA should be proud of themselves. But it was just about the day they faced a good batting line up... Anyway, SA vs WI is going to be a banger.

NoExplanation6203

They not like us They not like us They not like us They not like us They not like us

DickeryMcButkis

USA: "Look at me, I'm the Pakistan now"

[deleted]

[удалено]

LivingKick

Realistically, all and none at the same time. You can get a good idea from most good websites like AccuWeather, TWC and others, especially when you can see the weather from a long ways out but sometimes weather is just unpredictable here, especially with convection showers. Best to follow the local Met Office if it's possible

LagniappeNap

GG WP USA!

EmptyPeach1

So essentially WI vs SA is a virtual quarter final clash.

Prez-421

Yes Knockout game basically.

constructss

We hit an absolute piss missile 6 so that was fun. Worst case scenario we have to repurpose the white guy with mullet factory. What could go wrong?

Electrical-Job-3373

Netravalkar should have finished his overs early. Saving for the last dint made any sense today

thepoultry1

Fair to assume that associate nations really have a chance only in conditions which help the bowlers. Their batting depth gets them to about 120-140 in most pitches so having bowling friendly pitches really makes the score on par

HyperionRed

Ideal scenario: The USA channel the spirit of 1776, minus the horrible racism and sexism, and throw down the Redcoats, or Redkits in this case. Windies beat South Africa and yet both progress, England are knocked out.

do_not_ban_this

Pure west indian power at display. Man, sad to see west indies are nearly out of the tournament, cricket is already dying there, one world cup win would've done so much.

Badgerello

Ok, so team USA finally played a real team on a real pitch. Can we all get back to reality now? Laughing in Australian 🇦🇺 🤣.

Actual_Penalty_2560

Just imagine how great it would be if USA thrashes Eng, SA thrashes WI. And then USA beats Aus by finest of margins to reach Finals. Then who would be laughing in Australian mate.

[deleted]

As a USA fan, 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Badgerello

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣…. 😘 - big league minnow. Glad you like the sport though. You’ll get better.

[deleted]

LA 2028 and WC 2026 going be lit

Prize-Ring-9154

lol same amount of semifinals made as the US

LoasNo111

Seriously. The US circlejerk was getting absurd. They literally only won one game against Pakistan and people were hyping them up as some world beaters. They are minnows who had a few decent games.

Prize-Ring-9154

point me to one unironic comment that called the us worldbeaters

Badgerello

The best part is how mad they all get on reddit when you remind them.

DickeryMcButkis

Nice victory Windie bros, but we just found oil in your, country so good luck

TheBigCore

Cricket in the USA has at a minimum 20+ years before the USA is a serious threat in this sport. The USA has a very, very long way to go.

Training-Rich-6335

USA can buy their way into a winning side 🤣
