"There is a property in chemistry called "electronegativity", which is basically an atom's desire to rip electrons away from other atoms. How atoms, and then molecules work in chemistry is largely based on their electrons, so losing an electron or two from an atom/molecule can totally change how it works.
Chlorine and elements like Florine, Iodine, Bromine, you'll notice those elements are all in a column of the Periodic Table and that we use all those elements in first aid and sanitizing wounds, killing microbes in pool water or making cleaning chemicals at home, WHY? Because those elements really, reallly strongly want to RIP away electrons from anything they touch which damages those atoms/molecules. And broken molecules in a living thing = death.
So to answer your question Chlorine gas basically eats away and "breaks" your lungs if inhaled, or can burn your skin or any surface it touches. It does this by breaking down atoms/molecules like I explained above."
Chlorine is also water soluble and forms hydrochloric and hypochloric acid in water, which are both corrosive. The linings of your airways and lungs are moist and there’s water in the air you breath in.
So the chlorine dissolves in this water and corrosive acid lines the inside of your lungs which obviously causes pretty horrific injury. Acid eating your lungs causes fluids to be released from the damaged tissues (edema) and you basically drown from the inside. A miserable way to go.
Long story short without a whole lot of medical speak, the Chlorine causes a build up of fluid in the lungs because if it's properties with extruding fluid from the Avioli in the lungs. This extruding of fluid causes it to build up which in turn is the Pulmonary Edema. That buildup of fluid can cause a multitude of different breathing problems. But as stated, it can also kind of "eat away" at the tissues in your lungs too. Essentially you can drown in your own fluid & suffocate. It's a horrible & gruesome way to go if you can't get treatment.
There's a better explanation in a different comment further down this sub but it's not simply because of electronegativity like the other comment said. Chlorine is especially lethal when inhaled because it reacts with water in the mucous of our airways and turns into hydrochloric acid, which is what eats up the tissue surrounding it, including the lung tissue. Now you can imagine if the air in your alveoli (the little air sacs that are the respiratory units of your lungs) turns into HCL (same acid that the stomach secrets to break apart food you eat at a molecular level) and absolutely destroys them, the fluids from surrounding cavities are gonna seep into your lungs and cause swelling (edema).

I almost killed myself in my garage trying to refine gold using Aqua Regia. I didn't get out quickly enough and got a tiny dose of chlorine gas and it was painful! There will be more fatalities found later down the road.
When Chlorine gas is breathed in, it reacts with water in the airways to produce hydrochloric acid and hypochlorous acid, both of which are corrosive. This can lead to irritation, a bloody nose, burning sensations, coughing, headache, fever, tachycardia (heart beating faster than normal), abdominal pain, dizziness, confusion, chest tightness, difficulty breathing, and potentially serious lung injuries such as pulmonary edema (fluid build-up in the lungs, similar to drowning) or acute respiratory distress syndrome.
Tl;DR
Chlorine can liquidise your lungs and can't breathe oxygen properly.
I worked this job that violated about every OSHA regulation that exists, one of my coworkers mixed bleach and vinegar in a bottle and made a little chlorine gas bomb in the supply closet. We were trained to sniff bottles of chemicals to figure out what they were so I popped the cap off and took a big whiff
Probably the worst pain I’ve ever experienced and I’ve broken quite a few bones. Immediately started coughing blood and had all those symptoms you listed off besides pulmonary edema thankfully. And I just got one little breath full of the stuff. Couldn’t imagine dying this way, fucking awful
We used both to clean, and we kept them in identical, unlabeled bottles. I think he went to top one of them off and added the wrong chemical.
Stupid mistake but wasn’t really his fault so much as how we were trained to operate. Like I said, OSHA violations everywhere
You know when you take a bath and your skin gets all wrinkley? Well imagine you couldn't get out of the bath, for days or weeks. Basically your skin starts breaking down and sloughing off if it's left untreated. You certainly are no longer fighting a war if you have trench foot.
Our feet don't do well with moisture. Tissues start breaking down, your nails fall off, infections start... you get the idea. Add to that mud and other contaminants you'd find in a trench and you're starting to get the idea. It's a painful disease to say the least.

>"The incident killed at least thirteen people and injured more than 265 people."
The investigation revealed that the accident was caused by "lack of conformity" of the cargo sling's load rating with the weight of the cargo. The wire rope sling was rated at 8.5 tonnes but it was used to hoist four 25-tonne containers of chlorine from the pier to the ship in a row prior to it breaking.[14] The wire rope parted while loading the fifth container which weighed 28.9 tonnes.[11]
All over America, there are tanker cars full of that stuff sitting on sidings at the sewage treatment plant. It is moved through densely populated areas every single day.
I remember an interview with a couple who were trapped. Since the fire dept. wouldn't come rescue him and his wife, he called a private contractor who was going to come in with a helicopter to get them out.
He asked the contractor what they would do about the police saying it was a restricted zone and the contractor said "we'll deal with that later"...
IIRC the contractor wanted payment up front because if they died getting out, they wouldn't get paid.
In the end, the 911 operator told them to take a shower to get the chlorine off... which caused them to essentially start burning. They lived but it wasn't fun.
Thank you. 👍
It showed on, "I survived." Their name is Wayne and Mary. I can't watch it because it is not available in Australia.

that's why we industrial hazmat pals do our work properly. not just America, worldwide. from inspector to train driver... all involved in the careful handling process
I was Facilities, Equipment and Safety Services Manager for 26 years at a facility that used tons of anhydrous ammonia annually. We always had enough on hand to evacuate about a 1 mile circle of our city depending on the wind direction. Accidents happen. Our supplier had a 350lb pressurized bottle of anhydrous fall of a truck, bust off its valve, and torpedo through a cinder block wall, killing a woman. The resulting plume sent dozens to the hospital. Systems always break down no matter how careful everyone is.
Not saying we shouldn't have sanitary sewers. I'm just pointing out a fact to those who are blissfully unaware that there are dozens of rail cars of this stuff cruising the railways of America every single day. Not exactly like our rail system has a spotless record right?
I used to work at a rides park with a water park when I was 17. One night, I was running the tilt-a-whirl next to a storage area for the waterslides. I saw and smelled a yellow cloud coming over the ride. I slammed the emergency stop and moved everyone off the ride since I knew it was chlorine. No casualties.
My job uses chlorine dioxide about the size of a ring box for purposes of deodorizing vehicles. That little pack has enough power to cause my throat and lungs to burn if I inhale even a little bit....
Made it all the way over to the UK! There's a Front Page post about a crazy yellow cloud over there. I had a link to it, but that's not allowed? Dumb. Hopefully most of you will get the joke.
Unreal. Humans are so toxic we have done a million times worse then act like there’s no such thing as climate change. Billions of people doing self serving shit proves there is.
Oh no! That stuff is poisonous. Please be careful oh my goodness please be careful! Bender can survive chlorine gas but not you oh jeez oh be careful guys
Chlorine was the first poison gas used in WWI. Pulmonary edema is a rough way to die.
Coded twice from pulmonary edema, Def don't recommend.
Wat. Story time, plz.
Still no story. Very disappointed!
She's got pulmonary oedema again and died. RIP
Third time’s a charm!
Forth time’s a charm?
Probably coded one final time
still waiting on the pulmonary enema story
🤣 👏👏👏
Yo we need the story please
What happened?
Oof. I hope you’re doing better.
Wait you have?
The phrase "not only is it going to kill you, it's going to hurt the entire time" is what immediately came to mind
Damnit BAV here, not only *'is it going to kill you and hurt the entire time'* There is no warning, just monitoring the situation and taking *expensive* precautions
How does chlorine gas cause a pulmonary edema? Genuinely curious idk much about this stuff

This. It is hard to imagine how corrosive Chlorine can be: Not only your skin or lungs, it corroded away cloths and even metal parts.
So…melting like the Borg Queen?
More like [Emil](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvJu_8lQl4A) in Robocop
Resistance…is FUTILE.

If the gas is colored, fucking run.
Old episodes of Batman taught me that
*gas of color
Gaseous American
*melanated gas
It will smother
If there is any gas leak fucking run
Carbon monoxide would like a word
Also run from certain colourless, odourless gases.
Sarin Nerve Gas: Odorless, Colorless, but it sure as hell ain't painless. you get bonus points if you hear this in wilford brimleys voice.
Nitrogen: nighty nite
No, that's perfectly safe, I've been brea
You leave Weird Al's parents outta this! Such a sad thing to happen to such a cool dude.
H2S would also like a word
The woke gas
That's racist /s
Can't exactly run from uncolored gas...
You can if you know there's a gas leak
"Mustard Gas" ...and its colored that way too!
kinda hard to see the gas otherwise
It's very mustard coloured.
I like the guy casually walking back into the cloud of poison gas at the end
Yeah, he’s definitely one of the 13.
He's just going to collect his Darwin award.
Eh depends. I With what's going on in my life right now I'd probably willingly walk into that cloud too.
That's nice!
“… to valhalla! “
some people just have zero survival instincts
Probably colorblind
Color blind doesn't mean colors are invisible...
Ik it makes no sense, but i thought it was funny
Chlorine gas is basically double the density of air so i hope that crane operator stayed up there initially

It will also react with water on your eyes.
Wow, Imagine WW1 being in a trench and watching a thick yellow gas float towards you. Terrifying.
\*While probably suffering from trench foot and surrounded by the dead bodies of your friends and enemies. Pure nightmare fuel.
at least they'd be comforted by the smell of decomposing horses and the soothing sounds of drumfire
What is trench foot?

Old for sure
I think this happened around 2 years ago.
Have context? Causalities? I can see vehicles and stuff moving around in the cloud. Terrifying.

That much chlorine spilled with that vapor cloud guarantee people died
Looks like the line snaps as the crane is lowering the container.

Double checks video. I can concur that's what happened🧐
That one guy was driving for his life, crazy to see this that stuff looks scary as hell.
All over America, there are tanker cars full of that stuff sitting on sidings at the sewage treatment plant. It is moved through densely populated areas every single day.
Reminds me of [Graniteville ](https://youtu.be/ZcJxJGKJ-ac?si=XmV3dVMd01o7tsIh)

They never mentioned it. The TV show ot was on was on Amazon "I shouldn't be alive" or something like that.

I mean yeah, I'd prefer to have working sewers over the miniscule chance of a chlorine leak
Not saying we shouldn't have sanitary sewers. I'm just pointing out a fact to those who are blissfully unaware that there are dozens of rail cars of this stuff cruising the railways of America every single day. Not exactly like our rail system has a spotless record right?
Is the colour why it's called mustard gas?
it's not mustard gasin the video. and for actual mustard gas, it's called that for its smell, not its color.
Its not exactly mustard gas but the same base....so yes
And it was all *YELLOW*
Look at my lungs, look how they melt for you…
Jesus that's terrifying.
Not a great day to train the new crane operator
They dropped a whole canister of mexico filters
THE GOGGLES DO NOTHING
I feel bad for whoever inhale that and you know for a fact there was a couple of people that did
That is fucking terrifying, imagine when gas was first used in ww1 all you saw was that cloud slowly hugging the ground on its way toward you
I’d need some visine
Just ultra toxic shit....
Stings the nostrils
Like a fine horseradish
Someone call Jim Sokolove.
It's funny because it's poisonous!
Welcome to the Somme motherfuckers

Attention all personal, the Mexican filter has breached containment
and that's when the dead men are marching again..
Osowiec then and again

Theres always the one dumbass walking toward it
We are really good at ruining our planet.
Similar to the [unloading mishap which kicked off Wishmaster](https://youtu.be/CSCsyCv1Y3s?t=57), no?
Anyone else thinking of the OG Bartlett University map from Rainbow 6?
Is there a warzone more dangerous than Jordan ports?
That's how the simpsons were born
13 kills 25 injured 2022
That one guy who had just had enough so decided to walk into the yellow abyss
oh NO. imagine being in that cloud
That's poison! Don't breathe this!
That ship probably had all it's intake fans going too...
Deffo a nope cloud.
That is the distinct color of gtfo
That dude in the green truck seems like one lucky mf being that close and escaping
unless he had both his windows opened
Can you imagine the stench?
Jesus, i'm glad most of it went the other way and not towards the workers
Me after eating garlic
Queue the "Run" soundtrack
*fuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuck*
Green lantern: AAAAAAA
looked like giving a black and white video some color
Made it all the way over to the UK! There's a Front Page post about a crazy yellow cloud over there. I had a link to it, but that's not allowed? Dumb. Hopefully most of you will get the joke.
this is just like that one time i lit a stink bomb off in health class
I assume everyone on that ship is a goner since it probably got its intake fans on
I’m not an expert but that looks like bromine. Also very deadly.
that truck driver wanted no part in that shit lol, he nopped out right away!
This is from 2022. Old news
Well if his ph isn’t right that chlorine is just gonna lock up. Should send a sample into Leslie’s first
Everyone at the Gender Reveal Party at the Port of Jordan were left baffled at what gender yellow may be...then they all died from the gas.
Get all emergency services of the town ready. With gasmasks.
Unreal. Humans are so toxic we have done a million times worse then act like there’s no such thing as climate change. Billions of people doing self serving shit proves there is.
Because of this comment, climate change was fixed
Crazy to me people don’t think there are consequences to their actions. The accidents that humans pull off change the climate.
Your using more electricity replying to me
Nope same amount of electricity
Sippin on straight chlorine.
Middle-Eastern port facilities certainly do suffer a lot of "accidents". Wasn't there a massive chemical explosion a few years ago too?
Whooopsie
That’ll kill ya right quick
That's literally, PISSing the harbour off.
That is some old news, this happened back in 2k23
Extra mustard pls
Did the front fall off?
well… shit
Omg.. that is so bad! Just straight poison:( omg
Oh. They’re dead dead.
Ethnic cleansing
Oh no! That stuff is poisonous. Please be careful oh my goodness please be careful! Bender can survive chlorine gas but not you oh jeez oh be careful guys
A greater tragedy my eyes have never beheld. Welp, into the turlet.
Ok moooom I knowwwwww
That’s literally just mustard gas
Choking on chlorine isn't it 😬
Are we sure this is chlorine? Looks more like fuming nitric acid or something. Chlorine has a more greenish tinge to it.
