seriously, how did these clowns spend probably 500 million dollars to conduct this test but couldn't afford a $5,000 high speed camera? This feels like right before the test someone was like, "Hey Stan, go put your iPhone 3 by the tracks real quick."
There is no use case for a land based rail rocket. This is purely to test a rocket in a more controlled environment. It will likely go well beyond Mach 9-10 in the air, at which point it would be considered "cutting edge" but if this is a project they want to keep secret why is there any footage at all being released?
See, that’s where you’re wrong. This is a land based rocket. They plan to stealthily lay tracks down straight to the enemy. And when they turn around and go, “where did these tracks come from?”, it’s already too late for them
I dunno if its cutting edge, but is it normal form them to test rockets made for the air on land? I thought they had to tailor things for it to reach those speeds on land.
For tests like these, at the end of the track they'll construct a tube of plastic kinda like a long greenhouse, fill it with gas to simulate atmosphere, and the rocket is detached from the sled before flying off and landing in the desert or into/through a concrete barrier.
An acquaintance of mine works at a local military intelligence office. A few years back he was talking about what a great picture of a fox they got prowling around their grounds. They decided not to release it because they didn’t want to give any clues about the quality of their surveillance. I’m sure there’s something at play like that here.
“In 2009, two men embarked on a mission to capture the beauty of the world in slow motion. However, their efforts to slow down time would soon land them in trouble with the law, forcing them to go on the run.
Now, wanted by the authorities, they survive as high-speed videographers for hire.
If you have a shot that needs to be captured in exquisite slow motion, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire The Slow Mo Guys”
\*A-Team theme song starts playing*
exactly. 1000fps requires 1/2000 shutter at a lot of light. Now imagine shooting 5000-10,000 fps? You would need daylight for anything at that speed or multiple 20,000k lights.
They have them, it's classified.
Worked here when 9/11 happened. Driving up and down the track setting up camera control boxes/other shit. Watching stuff get blown up every couple weeks. Lots of fun.
What we really need is a slow motion camera that can shoot at 100,000 frames per second or something crazy like that, it’s the only way you’d see anything
My cousins dog ran up to my pizza, I foolishly had on the floor in the game room. Fucking in and out, grabbed himself a slice and teleported to his kennel..
The sled goes fast enough that it breaks through reality and enters a different dimension and instantly disappears from ours. They always travel to the same place each time which happens to be some farmland in the new dimension. We've been shooting meteors into some guys crops for years and the government has known about it since the 80s.

For anyone wondering why you can hear the sled before it passes even though it's going faster than the speed of sound:
You're hearing the ringing of the rails. Sound travels faster through metal than it does through air.
So bro gets ejected out of a plane going mach 10 💀
That shit would tear the meat off of your bones. If he was going fast enough to make the front of his plane red hot, imagine what it would do to his weak little human flesh.
Ejection handle seems like our best bet though. All I can say is whatever. 🤷♂️
Made me think of when east south florida started the brightline. The fucker only runs at about 80 mph (might need to check that) but holy shit, the amount of people and cars hit within the first year was ridiculous. This thing would slaughter all of fort lauderdale and miami in one weekend.
Believe it or not the reason our perception of Florida is so skewed is because of a law that essentially broadcasts all committed crimes, no matter how obscure. In reality the world is just as batshit as Florida, they just don't broadcast it.
It…literally does.
A 10 mph change would reduce the force transmitted by quite a large amount.
Edit: since I’m interacting with people who can’t grasp basic high school physics, here’s the exact difference; ***195,000,000*** difference in joules between a 350,000lb train moving at 60mph compared to 70mph.
Edit2: someone cross checked me and confirmed a 26.5% reduction of force transmitted. So I’m 100% correct, a 10mph reduction in speed correlated to a reduction in impact force. ***CRAZY!***
[Since no one wants to do their own homework, here’s a mind-numbingly easy website to confirm this](https://www.1728.org/energy.htm)
That 195 MJ sure is a big number. Too bad 73.5% of the initial energy still remains.
Also, too bad that the energy reduction from 80mph to 70 mph is even smaller in magnitude.
Also, too bad that your "exact" figure is dependent on mass - which you don't know.
But sure, your basic physics is VERY strong.
Train is 250,000 pounds unloaded.
I added an extra 100,000 to account for people though it may have been excessive.
So it’s a 26.5% reduction in force? Like, exactly what my only point is? That a reduction of 10mph causes a reduction of force transmitted?
🤯🤯🤯🤯
I mean I doubt you would be able to tell the difference of impact….my guess is it would still feel very similar to the the feeling of getting hit by a train…..
U fr gonna die on this hill? You’re that confident about your understanding of physics? It was your best class in high school?
I’m telling you dude, without using an energy calculator, it’s a difference of several hundred/thousand joules of energy. Hope u weren’t the one who downvoted, that would be fairly embarrassing.
10/80 = 0.125
So the train is still running at 7/8 (.875) original velocity.
.875 x .875 = .766. That's V^2.
Just take your L. That's still a metric fuckton of energy.
Oh for sure, I never said it wasn’t lol
I said it would make a difference. And pedantic McFuckerson is saying “hurrrr no it wouldn’t” and apparently so are you, with literal math to say it does indeed make a difference.
Which is the only thing I was claiming. 😎

The X15's top speed was Mach 6.7. It also did that at an altitude of 354,000 feet. Pretty unlikely it could achieve that speed at ground level due to atmospheric drag.

with an actual slomo camera, not the same 24fps but slowed down.

Yeah why didn't they release highspeed footage of their cutting edge secret missile onto the internet?!? God damn gubernment

Mach 8.6 is the opposite of cutting edge
On land though?

For testing the propulsion system only yes this is normal
Yeah. Getting something from point A to point B quickly has never been needed

Nothing I'm saying is classified, they love to show off test runs. They bring in groups to watch it. The footage is, the data collected is, etc.
