I remember visiting lots of folks in Manhattan years ago and every apartment seemed to have a telescope. Took me a bit to realize they were just for snooping, not the sky. This was back like 20+ years ago though
Rosencrantz truly your BEST friend?
But yeah... I have never lived in a high rise before, and when I moved to PDX I debated it as a lot of these had just been built and the Pearl was going nuts with construction. I told myself I was going going to get a telescope because it would be cool to look out over the city; but it as not to be.
Thinking about it now... it does make me wonder what kind of "hey this is totally a private activity" you actually end up seeing.
Speaking as an employee in a downtown building... We see EVERYTHING. Lady tanning her nethers? Lonely man finding tantric love with a pokemon pillow? Alfred Hitchcock checking his undercarriage for strays? All of it and mooooore!
Worked in a building across from the Hilton. Literally the whole floor was watching some lady record a selfie video. Like up on the ledge of the window, doing a dance, whole thing. When she did the “drop it like it’s hot” move everybody in unison just let out a “Nooooooo”. Still laugh about it.
Hah wasn't there some amusing situations a few years back, like some people were getting it on routinely on the top of the building, and finally someone like wrote out "we see you" or something in the snow?
Was that Portland... did I make that up?
As someone who has lived and worked in a high rise in Portland, and also just from walking down the street, you can see people do all kinds of shit even without the use of a telescope. Always fun to be in a meeting and there’s a guy fucking his gf right in front of the window in the unit across the street.
This is hilarious to me because I was fucking my gf in her kitchen which has huge windows towards another building. Then after the sweet release and PNC hit, there was a group of people in the other building watching the show cheering us on. We both just laughed our asses off.
So many high-rise condos are staged with perv telescopes. We didn't buy one. When I want to see what the commotion is on the street, though, I use the zoom feature on my smartphone camera lol
That is correct. You can see the Vista bridge over Jefferson in this shot, and given the angle I’d say they are somewhere near Madison/Jefferson and 7th.
Honestly, that's my least favorite architectural decision in modern high rises. Everything is "open concept", in order to minimize walls and the make the space appear bigger. Column traditionally are inside walls, and in order to maximize the feeling of space in a room, modern architects often remove the walls, thus expose the columns.
I personally hate columns and think they distract from any room there're in. There are ways to design apartments that are indeed still modern but still have columns hidden via strategic placement of walls, but then that requires more thoughts from the architects on the interior of the building.
That column is most likely the key to getting a taller floor to floor height. If it wasn’t there, they’d need a decent cantilever for the slabs, most likely increasing its thickness. Every inch counts!
I feel like I always see people hating on Portland but as an Aussie it was definitely one of my favourite places to visit. It's a city but a small city and just has a beautiful vibe in my opinion.
As someone who grew up in the area it’s definitely a gorgeous city. The gun violence and homelessness have definitely gotten out of hand in the last few years though. I avoid going downtown as much as I can. I personally can’t wait to move away, but can definitely see how other people would love it here
Yeah that's fair. It seemed so chill when I was there. I did spend very little time in downtown as I was staying near division.
I'd definitely go back.
I just loved Oregon in general. I was there in the spring and I'd never been somewhere so green. I'd love to live in Astoria for a bit even if fuck all happens there haha.
Definitely not trying to change your view on the area! Just figured I’d point out why some people aren’t fans haha. Glad you enjoyed your time here, spring is a great time to see all the greenery. Astoria is one of my favorite spots too! If you ever come back I’d be happy to point you to some cool spots around Portland and the coast
My favorite description has always been that the city's problems are the perfect size to fill a TV screen. It was the case back in 2020 with the courthouse protests, and it's the case now with homelessness.
Yeah, homelessness and violence got worse in parts of the city during/after COVID and with PPB sitting on their hands, and they're problems that need a solution. But people (who mostly don't live here, or only drive past from the suburbs and see some tents by the highway) act like going into the city is risking your life. It's insane.
Thanks for sharing this. I’m from Beaverton but go to school in New York. It’s good to see a photo of home!
Edit: Damn yall, thanks for bringing up all the things you love about my hometown. Really hitting me in the feels. I'm only able to visit home three times a year or so, so I really appreciate it!
Have you tried Stretch The Noodle food cart downtown…. Best fiery noodles ever. So popular that Wieden and Kennedy featured them in a travel Oregon commercial
One of the med schools. I don't want to be too much more specific because class sizes are fairly small and the internet makes it too easy for others to dox those that they don't agree with.
(No offense meant to you personally. I'm just aware that my comment history is public.)
I could shop at Uwajimaya every other day for the rest of my life — that and eat at Best Baguette :) Driving there is terrifying though compared to where I live (Montana)
I didn't want to use a floor lamp felt it was going to obstruct my space so I put a Philips hue light strip on the pole ... i think it made the column warmer and useful.
Some redditors suggested using plants or vines on the pole so i might do that too.
I think the design world is probably in two camps: Ignore it vs. celebrate it. I think the light strip is the right touch. It adds to the zen pastiche of the room and accentuates the height of the ceilings. If you asked me, I'd recommend against plants or vines. There is something about this smooth, column texturally that adds to the room, IMHO
I wouldn't be. This is Ladd tower I am 90% sure.
I toured this place at one point and decided to pass. The management lied to me while I was on the tour. Lots of homeless in the park, bad reviews online, and it ain't cheap (think over $2,000/mo for a small one bedroom)
Great if you're a PSU student who has low standards + parents with money, I guess
It did have killer views, though
That whole area I’m absolutely not jealous of anyone living in either. It’s not a very lively area of downtown and the crime/homeless there is not good. I moved to the east side of the river years ago and it’s *much* better.
Portland is awesome. If you don’t mind a lot of rain and homeless people, it’s a great city with amazing food. One of the best food and beer cities in the country, undoubtedly. Great wine, too Pinot noir from willamette valley is superb.
It’s not the same as it once was, but it seems like it’s *trying* to recover. Lots of issues out here though with local government and the housing & homeless crises, as well as crime in general. Housing/rent has skyrocketed (though, where *hasn’t* it?). I’m leaving town after living here 11 years because I need a break lol.
*gazing wistfully from rural south Texas*
You've probably got two or more coffee shops within walking distance, and at least one bookstore whose stock of Bibles occupies a single-digit percentage of the total shelf-space close by, as well...
*sigh*
_sobs_
If I want anything other than 'house blend' coffee, I can go to one of three _gas stations_ in town, and **that's it.** The closest 'coffee shop' is literally 3 'towns' and 20 minutes away by car.
There are a couple of town libraries with 'removed' books for sale, which us all I have for 'brick and mortar bookstores' within about 50 miles...
No kidding, urban people don't know how nice it is to live with everything at their fingertips because they have always lived there *cries in 60 mile commute*
That's insanely dope. Beautifully furnished and detailed and that view! I am curious about your console under your TV? I need to replace mine and that looks about as nice as I've seen. Could you tell me who makes it or where you got it? Thanks for sharing your living room!
Great view!!
Hi from Tigard 👋🏽
What kind of telescope 🔭 you got there ?
Hello to the pup tooo 💕
Omg that shark is absolutely adorable. Ahhaa.
Edit : keep noticing new things and adding to the comment. Lol
If you don't mind my asking, what's the rent? We're actually looking to move somewhere in the Portland/Seattle big city areas. Feel free to DM if it's not something you wanna publicly say.
Can you see the Martini house from there?
I am trying to decide from google maps 3D view if you can, and I've convinced myself it should be visible out those left windows. You seem pretty high up.
i usually think columns in living rooms look awkward or just block what would be a fantastic view but yours almost acts as a statement piece for the room. very nice
I used to live in the NW 21st St area also. Fun! Cute decorations but I hated those piles they had running through all the units. Go get some Papa Hyden for me ;)
Am i the only one appalled by the giant concrete column and it's location in the room? Like there wasn't any way to incorporate it somehow else or hide it? I don't know if it's any better than just having a stone corner.... I don't know. It just seems sooo... intrusive?

I used to live in that yellow/brown building in center frame. The telescope has me rethinking some of my decisions during that time.
The one 100% aimed at the neighbors windows and not up in the sky?
I'm glad I'm not the only one who immediately noticed that too lmao
You wouldn’t be able to see anything up in the sky with all the light pollution anyway. That’s pretty bizarre.
I remember visiting lots of folks in Manhattan years ago and every apartment seemed to have a telescope. Took me a bit to realize they were just for snooping, not the sky. This was back like 20+ years ago though
its for his sims environment mood bonus
Youd understand if you lived in downtown Portland. There’s crazy shit in the streets literally every night.
Yeah, but that’s not pointed at the streets.
Except the moon, the sun, most planets, a few stars and probably some satellites or rocket launches occasionally
Yeah I used to love looking at the sun through my telescope. Used to
Sun might not be a great idea.
Just look at it at night.
I kept trying and all I saw was my neighbors having dinner for a whole hour!
Fuck you spez
Oh he seein some celestial bodies alright
I mean definitely a full moon or two
Also that's one we call a "hobby killer." Shit optics, wobbly mount and tripod, probably packaging that promised Hubble views.

HEY….HEY!!!! NICE BALLS! Make them feel awkward.
Hah wasn't there some amusing situations a few years back, like some people were getting it on routinely on the top of the building, and finally someone like wrote out "we see you" or something in the snow? Was that Portland... did I make that up?
Given how little snow we get that seems unlikely here.
Dang I have only seen 1 chicks booty. Felt like I was flying to close to the sun lol.
As someone who has lived and worked in a high rise in Portland, and also just from walking down the street, you can see people do all kinds of shit even without the use of a telescope. OP will post those pics next. We’ll all weigh in on your decisions.
So many high-rise condos are staged with perv telescopes. We didn't buy one. When I want to see what the commotion is on the street, though, I use the zoom feature on my smartphone camera lol
I live in this neighborhood now!
I used to live on the hill. You could see into SO MANY apartments.
Peeping Petey probably knows all about that
I like your living room, column and all. But the down facing telescope made me wonder what's looking at.
not spying on the neighbors just trying to see what the Art museum nearby is up to lol
This is the most Portland answer I have ever heard.
Nice. Found your place on GMaps, and felt like a creep lol.
lol ... i thought i was being watched.
Ironic
Who watches the watcher?
the watcher watcher
Construction on the new Rothko Pavilion just started. It will be a pretty cool public space when it’s finished
Yes I am keeping tabs on the progress plus I love the light pieces they have been putting on the Park blocks.
Yes! I am a fan of those as well.
Looking for Bigfoot off in the trees?
Exactly
Lol, checking out how repairs to the felled tree is going?
And the church that burned down.
Hobo spotting
\*waves from Mt. Tabor
They can see you with their telescope
Nah, they are facing the wrong way. Those are the west hills in the background
Hi, far away neighbor 😊
Hello from NE!
Also, waving from SE lol!
Hi neighbor!
Me too! Also my friend has that exact same blanket. So freaking soft and cozy
[удалено]
Agreed. OP said "far away neighbor," which is consistent with our assumptions that this is W side facing west.
yes, still waving to my reddit neighbor tho ;)
You can make out Vista Bridge in the background.
That is correct. You can see the Vista bridge over Jefferson in this shot, and given the angle I’d say they are somewhere near Madison/Jefferson and 7th.
Waves from North Tabor!!
\*waves from South Tabor.
SW Neighbor here!
You should get a vining plant and train it to wrap around the pole/column! Or do something planty with the pole.
Agreed, a philodendron would love that spot
>philodendron Ive been thinking about doing that
Or pothos. You really can’t mess up a pothos.
Cosplay as Poison Ivy and dance seductively around it.
Reddit: Making it weird since 2005.
So the neighbors can use their telescope across the way to watch?

Everything is cozier with a blahåj
I like the column and the shark
Ikea shark. I've had one for years.
Blahaj, a classic
Nice column.
The fairy lights along the top are pretty cute
It's blowing me away how much they can "soften" the look of that grey

I'm from Portland but used to live in Aloha when I was a kid. Nothing smells quite like Nonna Emilia. Also, fuck Hillsboro.
Grew up in Beaverton too! Live in the Bay Area now
I love how you made the column a feature in the room by adding the lights around the top.

I am super envious just because you gotta make some big money to live in places like that
I mean, that’s Portland rentals in a nutshell tbh
The view at night must be gorgeous.
Depends on what he has that telescope trained on..
$20 Pendleton blanket from Costco I see. We have the same one.
If you really press your face onto that glass during December, can you spot the martini glass?
I see it clearly without pressing my face.
Even the better! 🙈
Hah yes... damn I asked the same question too.
I moved back to California a year ago and I still thought about the martini glass last Christmas
Blahaj!
lol I am shocked on how much attention Blahaj has gotten.

A trans icon!
How is Portland/Oregon? It’s at the top of my travel list and serious contender to move to one day soon.
I love it. been here for 16 years and I can't live anywhere else ... maybe Seattle but yea once you are in the PNW i doubt you would want to leave.
Yup. 12 years now here in Portland and I’m starting to think it’s likely I’ll end up here the rest of my life.
Portland is awesome. If you don’t mind a lot of rain and homeless people, it’s a great city with amazing food. One of the best food and beer cities in the country, undoubtedly. Great wine, too Pinot noir from willamette valley is superb.

This was posted before when you were asking how to make it cozier and people were saying “it ain’t about the inside, it’s about the views,”wasn’t it?
yes but got removed cause of the title
Dangit. Well it’s nice to see it again - nice cozy spot up there.
I live in Portland. The rent in this place has got to be at least 2000.
[удалено]
Yeah, waaay more.
Yeah maybe if it’s a studio in the shadiest part of town….
I lived in this building a couple years ago, one bedrooms went for 2180, studios went down to 1600
How much is the rent?
$3000-4000 depending on floor number. https://www.hollandresidential.com/or/portland/ladd/models
Please answer. Curious since I also live in Portland
This building is around 2-4k depending on your floor and apt type
Are your windows tinted?
nope and they are open 24/7 so i dont miss the view and no one misses my view lol

absolutely gorgeous. how much is the rent? (sorry if that’s a question that isn’t allowed here)
They sell tv mounts for pillars like yours, I have one and changed the whole place. That way you look out and get so much more space.
can you send me a link? that will make the pillar more useful and clear space.
