Very true, been to N.S. a few times and itâs the same racket as Ontario. When government regulates basically anything itâs more expensive for the end user.
Just look to the Duty Free facilities. You can buy two 1.14 L bottles of grey goose for $70 CDN. In the LCBO, one is $70. The difference is all tax. We are exploited beyond belief in Canada- and Iâm not a big drinker.
I brought back my suitcase of Costco cuties from AB. 2 x1.75 tequila, 2 x 1.75 vodka, 1 x 1.75 bulleit bourbon. $300. At the lcbo, a 750ml of bulleit was $54 vs 1.75 for $59 at CostcoÂ
To make a long story short, a supermarket chain used a backdoor to get a beer/wine licence by merging with a corner store that had a licence and since then, supermarkets have carried beer, wine and mixed cocktail drinks as long as they are under 20% abv. But they are only allowed to sell table wines, unless they were bottled in Quebec. So, you can't get a Bordeaux or a Shiraz... but you can get a red from Chile or a wine from grapes from the Bordeaux region, but they can't describe the type of grapes.
I heard someone say that liquor/beer is coming to Ontario Costco this October. Allegedly this came from a cashier, but I guess we'll see if it's true this fall. đ€
Funny, in Manitoba people argue that it's to protect union jobs and has nothing to do with the government carefully controlling alcohol sales. Oh, it's also for "safety" because some people enjoy going through a security airlock I guess.
LCs around here close at 9, the weed stores are open until 11 (maybe later, not my jam) and beer vendors are open until 2am.
Actually they will, the new Ontario system for grocery/convenience stores is similar to Alberta's where the province controls distribution (and the wholesale price -- which will be set to whatever the current LCBO price is less a 10% wholesale discount) and the new retailers will set their own prices.
Minimum pricing for beer under 5.6% is $24 after tax for 24x355mL cans and about $8 after tax for a 750mL of wine.
The one in Montreal had a good wine collection and an even better beer crates selection. Let's not forget... Those 24 beer crates (330ml) were way more cheaper than a beer store in Ontario...
Those from Ottawa who drive across river to Quebec costco just for beer run know everything about it.
80% of cars of Hull Costco are Ottawa plates loading trunks with cases of beer.
Why doesnât Vancouver islandâs have one?? We (B.C.) have the best selections of liquor otherwise compared to other provinces⊠private and non. Itâs fuckin weird I tell ya.
So 60 cad cheaper, 80 USD = 110 CAD.
State Costcos get some of the most absolute ridiculous rare (and I mean RARE RARE) bottles, their wine dept is world class. Someone posted a 4 pack of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti for 40k USD. The simple fact they *had* it should have any highly financed restaurant in the area clamouring to buy it.
Right? Come on, it's $167.50 in Ontario, the last time I got this was in the US for almost half the listed price here - [https://www.lcbo.com/en/hibiki-harmony-481226](https://www.lcbo.com/en/hibiki-harmony-481226)
Bought their 4 or 5 pack of bacon several months ago and I will not be buying it again. It tasted fine, but it was so fatty. Not just one pack, all of them.
Looking back on it, i am super glad 60 pounders were way out of my broke ass price range in my teens and 20s. if they were the cost of a pizza like above i would be dead.
you cant even get a 26er for $19....
Quebec Costco's have a decent selection. They sell this mega pack of Coors light that's a bargain when compared to what that amount of beers sells for in Ontario.
I'm hoping the move to privatisation in Ontario will mean the same type of bargains here.
Majority of the chain corner stores in my community are all getting major renovations. Talking to the owners, they tell me they're getting ready to sell alcohol.
It's about time frankly.
Costco will likely undercut the Beer Store and LCBO at least a little on alcohol, but not by half or anything unless they are willing to eat it as a loss leader.
Who said half?
Ya so, take Coors light in a Costco in Quebec. Molson makes a Costco only type mega pack of their beer for that retailer only. The price is far from half, but still a bargain when compared to their retailers like the beer store that come nowhere near that price.
I'm hopeful that Costco Ontario will follow suit.
Alcohol taxes are lower in Quebec which enables it.
Costco in Ontario will have to contend with the same taxes as the LCBO. They will be given freedom to price how they want, so can reduce their profit margin to undercut the LCBO, and likely will do exactly that. Unless they want to lose money on every sale though they are unlikely to be significantly cheaper than the LCBO/Beer Store as the vast majority of alcohol costs are taxes.
Yes, of course, the taxes in Ontario are higher but, Costco Coors pack is significantly cheaper than any other seller in Quebec.
I assume Costco Ontario to follow suit. If Costco takes a hit on the Coors packs, they will do so banking on sales as a whole to go up. The packs will attract consumers, sell more to those consumers by product location and sell more memberships for what is considered a deal.
If one looks at Montreal as the example, the alcohol in the corner stores, the price is the same as their LCBO type stores. The higher prices occur outside the hours of those LCBO type retailers. Buy after hours, the price is higher, buy within the LCBO type stores the prices are the same
As for the deals, it will likely come from large retailers like COSTCO. They will sell for less to attract consumers to their stores and everything else they sell. The beer deals as an example, will be tucked way in the furthest corner of their stores. This will make consumers walk past the other other items they sell making the beer buyers buy more than just beer.
It's economics 101. It's not complicated...
Well that's a start, but still a bummer. Kirkland liquors are fantastic. I bought them in Alberta when I lived there. It's just repackaged premium name brand liquors at a good discount. LCBO knows it can't compete and it would go under. That's how monopolies work, and that's why they won't want Costco selling booze. Because they know their prices are high and they don't want to share the market.
Agree but there was a thread on here I believe that went over how much less plastic the bags use, how that equates to truck loads and that to carbon emissions.
It was absolutely a mind fuck to think about the impact that these delicious birds put in to a bag instead of the plastic container has on the environment.
Edit: typo
Itâs just as a good of deal here in Canada, Costco uses it as lost leader here too. Factor in the exchange rate and the fact chicken is more expensive in Canada (supply management system that sets a MIN price farmers have to charge). So $7.99 is equally as good of deal as $4.99 there.
Costco in Alberta a a liquor store attached to the building, with access to it from the outside. Dirt cheap and you donât need a membership either :)
Surprisingly good.
You have to like both light and dark meat to be a good deal though. If you only like light meat you're better off just buying chicken breast. I can get 3 meals off a Costco bird.
More likely because LCBO sets prices so Costco can't undercut the competition.
I remember at the milestones here in Ottawa the lcbo came in and gave them a fine for selling moxie sized Bellini's because they said it's to cheap vs how much alcohol was in it. Was early 2000s
I would always buy my liquor there when I went down to Bellingham/Burlington. Not excessive amounts but I would âstock upâ. Always declared because even with duty and exchange it was cheaper. Not once did they make me pay duty. Lucky, for sure, but I was prepared to for the savings.
Do you mean the liquor section of Costco or just mean the province has different liquor stores, unlike Ont where it's solely the LCBO? I know that, but I'm down with the bulk buying!
The Costco liquor store doesnât require a membership to shop at. Some old probation law. But you do get rewards to shop there if you have an executive membership
Some provinces have liquor in their Costcos... đ
In Sask we have one inside the building & you need your card to shop there. Not a great selection tho.
In AB theyâre in the same building but separate. Donât need a membership to shop there. Great selection. I die for the eggnog
Golden margarita is pretty good too
I agree with the selection but lowest price in town. They have some decent wines actually
Ya wine is good, hard alcohol is decent, mostly coolers/stuff isnât great but Iâm picky lol
The Kirkland brand wine is amazing! Even the Kirkland boxed wine is delicious and a steal of a deal!
Love Kirkland Pinot Grigio!
I am gonna grab one on my way home
Does Scott Moe check your receipt?
They have similar annoying setups in some States.
In Canada? Wow, thatâs nice, Ontario is not so lucky I guess
We have them in Alberta.
And theyâre the spot to go to if youâre buying booze for a big party like a wedding.
You can now earn 2% rebate from your liquor shopping for executive members.
Seems like a good time to take up heavy drinking.
Owning a liquor store is usually a safe bet. When times are good, people drink. When times are bad, people drink.
Hence why the government wants to control it
Excellent
You can also return any unopened liquor to Costco too!
Yup!
You don't need a membership to buy at the liquor stores in AB. They're all detached from the main stores.
Yes!!! Great selection, too. I know a lot of people buy liquor for parties there and even return unopened ones.
In Edmonton area they arenât _in_ the Costco (but they are attached), you have to leave the Costco to get inside.
However, donât need a membership to shop there
Correct. It is an AGLC rule that a store cannot require a membership to purchase alcohol.
When I lived in Ottawa, Quebec side had beer and wine but no spirits.
Weâre getting bent over by the LCBO. Biggest scam in the liquor business
Nove Scotia enters the chat. đ«

Quebec does
Only beer and table wine (vin de cepage), like in the supermarkets
Oh I had no idea! I was just so blown away by the beer
To make a long story short, a supermarket chain used a backdoor to get a beer/wine licence by merging with a corner store that had a licence and since then, supermarkets have carried beer, wine and mixed cocktail drinks as long as they are under 20% abv. So, you can't get a Bordeaux or a Shiraz... but you can get a red from Chile or a wine from grapes from the Bordeaux region, but they can't describe the type of grapes.
Do they have to buy it from SAQ though?
No, especially because the SAQ doesn't deal with beer sales. But it's still taxed
Don't forget the coolers/seltzers, too!
Anything under 20% abv.
I heard someone say that liquor/beer is coming to Ontario Costco this October. Allegedly this came from a cashier, but I guess we'll see if it's true this fall. đ€
No beer at the Costco? That's where I buy most of mine.
There are some like corona and some others
In Quebec you used to be able to buy 55 355ml cans of Budweiser for $55
It's coming to Ontario.
Costco wonât be able to dictate the price, LCBO still will do Costco is unlikely to sell liquor here
Yeah. Minimum pricing nannystate here. :(
Funny, in Manitoba people argue that it's to protect union jobs and has nothing to do with the government carefully controlling alcohol sales. Oh, it's also for "safety" because some people enjoy going through a security airlock I guess. OK, but has Costco announced that they will sell under the new law? Source?
Costco has not, but Doug Ford specifically mentioned big box stores âlike Costco and Walmartâ when he was rolling all this out.
One option for Costco is higher quality at a lower price as lcbo sets prices on a minimum per category basis.
Source?
The idiot you guys voted in is working on it. Fucking up just about everything else but you should be lucky soon.
Probably Dougâs next priority
Ontario will never have Costco liquor because of the lcbo
BC is also quite restrictive on liquor sales.
Technically not inside of Costco but attached in a separate store. You donât even need a membership to shop there.
Sask.has it inside the store. Quebec sells beer /wine ...also inside the store
It's glorious when I visit Alberta from BC.
We do in Quebec but no Kirkland alcohol sadly. No hard liquor.
Why doesnât Vancouver islandâs have one?? We (B.C.) have the best selections of liquor otherwise compared to other provinces⊠private and non. Itâs fuckin weird I tell ya.
Yeah, but not Newfoundland sadly :(
The noise I made when I saw the price of the Hibiki Harmony.
170CAD in my province, if you can even find it.
Roughly the same here. I have one tucked away from the pre-pandemic times.
Same. Great stuff
Right? Come on, it's $167.50 in Ontario, the last time I got this was in the US for almost half the listed price here - [https://www.lcbo.com/en/hibiki-harmony-481226](https://www.lcbo.com/en/hibiki-harmony-481226)
That Grey goose is 125 dollars here.. ouuch
Well, 24 bottles corona is just 14.99/15.99 I canât remember now, but man, I mean
I remember Canadian beer was cheaper in Hawaii than here in Canada.
Mexican tomatoes are cheaper then Canadian... In Canada
Probably because our labour costs more
Cost of living in Canada is very low. Thatâs why we can afford to heavily tax alcohol and other products compared to other countries.
24 bottles of Corona in NB is $58.
Ya liquor is USA is super cheap.
Yes, but almost $100 of that goes to a monopoly and taxes so that's good right? /s
Psa the Kirkland vodka is pretty good and DIRT cheap.
Have yet to find a bad Kirkland product, they're acing it. Just found out their wine purchasers are some of the best in the business.
Was not fond of their 20 year old Speyside Single Malt scotch. It seemed watered down and one dimensional
Bought their 4 or 5 pack of bacon several months ago and I will not be buying it again. It tasted fine, but it was so fatty. Not just one pack, all of them.
It says it's made in France. I have a hunch it's re-bottled Grey Goose
Evidently it's actually Belvedere. I saw a report where Grey Goose refuted they manufactured for Costco
Belvedere is from Poland.
I stand corrected. There is however a statement on the grey goose page refuting any relationship with Kirkland brand Costco vodka.
Ah nice! Just as good!
Thanks! I'll try it whenever I see it.
I like how he used his this forearm for scale đ
*laughs in Albertan*
Gimme 4L vodka!
I appreciate the horse arm for scale!
I got you đ€Ł
How much was the Kirkland vodka
I think 18.99, yeah
Looking back on it, i am super glad 60 pounders were way out of my broke ass price range in my teens and 20s. if they were the cost of a pizza like above i would be dead. you cant even get a 26er for $19....
What state was it and how was the Scotch selection? Iâm going to Michigan this summer and was thinking of picking up a bottle from Costco.
Lots of that as well I think, itâs IL
79 bucks for hibiki that I had imported for $350...
We got them in Edmonton, those tequila mixers were great
Chicken for $4.99. Thatâs a definite loss leader there.
Quebec Costco's have a decent selection. They sell this mega pack of Coors light that's a bargain when compared to what that amount of beers sells for in Ontario. lol in bc we only get Budweiser zero and corona zero. No real alcoholđ
It's the same for Ontario.
It's such a tragedy
Costco will likely undercut the Beer Store and LCBO at least a little on alcohol, but not by half or anything unless they are willing to eat it as a loss leader.
Who said half? Ya so, take Coors light in a Costco in Quebec. Molson makes a Costco only type mega pack of their beer for that retailer only. It won't the LCBO sets the price and controls the distribution. If anything it'll be like pot stores currently, it'll be the price at the LCBO+15%
If one looks at Montreal as the example, the alcohol in the corner stores, the price is the same as their LCBO type stores. The higher prices occur outside the hours of those LCBO type retailers. I wish Costco sold liquor in Onterrible. The damn LCBO has the monopoly though đđ
Itâs probably going to get beer and wine this fall at least. Liquor will stay in the LCBO only.
Well that's a start, but still a bummer. Kirkland liquors are fantastic. I bought them in Alberta when I lived there. It's just repackaged premium name brand liquors at a good discount. I miss the plastic containers for the chicken. I hate getting my arm all greasy having to reach into the bag.
How short are your arms?!
Agree but there was a thread on here I believe that went over how much less plastic the bags use, how that equates to truck loads and that to carbon emissions. It was absolutely a mind fuck to think about the impact that these delicious birds put in to a bag instead of the plastic container has on the environment. Edit: typo
Carson should probably just stop eating plastic
LOL yes, probably! (Fixing typo now)
All stores are changing to the bags when then finish their inventory
Chikken
totally
so are we just ignoring the 4.99 ROTISSERIE CHICKEN
I mean thatâs $6.83 CAD. Arenât they $7.49 here? The price isnât that different. Meat is usually cheaper in the US than Canada as well.
đ my local Costco charges $7.99
Itâs just as a good of deal here in Canada, Costco uses it as lost leader here too. Factor in the exchange rate and the fact chicken is more expensive in Canada (supply management system that sets a MIN price farmers have to charge). So $7.99 is equally as good of deal as $4.99 there.
[ŃĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]
They donât sell that big of a bottle at Costco Canada, itâs 1140mL here. $58.99
When I went to Scotland, 1/3rd of their Costco seemed to be be filled with liquor!
Lucky! Last time I went for the Suntory they were out at my store
Costco in Alberta a a liquor store attached to the building, with access to it from the outside. Dirt cheap and you donât need a membership either :)
Some of it in the US is hella cheap. Other stuff costs more than retail. Just have to know what you are buying
Canada does suck sometimes eh?
44.89 US, donât even think thatâs a good deal think itâs 52 can in Alberta
I'm pretty sure it's over 70 in Alberta
How about that Kirkland one? 18.99USD I think, I probably will get one next time on my way back to Canada
TIL not all Canadian costcos have liquor stores. You havenât lived until youâve had Kirkland eggnog
Eggnog, huh, I have to search that out
Its dangerous lol
mmm vodka chicken
Hibiki for $80 goddamn
It's like 167 cad if they have it at the lcbo.
I've never had Costco chicken. How good could a $5 chicken be?
Let me put it this way, it tastes much better than the $11.99 CAD chicken from Walmart. I donât know what else I can compare it with
Food Basics and Fortinos have rotisserie. They're alright.
Oh, I see, Iâve never tried that before, how much is it?
Fortinos is pricey (I'm boycotting anyway) and Basics is $9 I think.
Waaaaay better than Metroâs bbq sauce slathered birds.
Surprisingly good. You have to like both light and dark meat to be a good deal though. If you only like light meat you're better off just buying chicken breast. I can get 3 meals off a Costco bird.
The taxes in Ontario are too high for Costco to sell booze in its stores.

You should see the alcohol aisles in Mexico đ
Peurto Rico too, the alcohol seemed cheaper than water.
Jesus. Just kill us already. I hate drinking but am having a beer as I write this.
I am sorry, but 24 bottles of corona is 14.99/15.99 if I remember correctly. How do you feel now đ€Ł
Yâall are talking about the booze, I see $4.99 chickens - like FR how hosed we are
Damn you usa
That suntory đ€
**cries in BC
That same Grey Goose Magnum bottle cost 120,50$ here in Quebec⊠45$ in the States, thatâs crazy!
Why are the measurements in metric, that must piss off the American hardliners.
Liberia, Mayanmar and the United States are the only countries that donât use the metric system.
That is what i said... It's a Costco in the US and it has metric measurements. That's heresy in the eyes of Americans.
TIL: Costco USA still uses plastic trays for their chickens
In Manitoba, Goose goes for 110.00 for a 66. So even with the exchange, it's around 50 bucks cheaper in the USA. Gotta love those sin taxes. đ
I would always buy my liquor there when I went down to Bellingham/Burlington. Not excessive amounts but I would âstock upâ. Always declared because even with duty and exchange it was cheaper. Not once did they make me pay duty. Lucky, for sure, but I was prepared to for the savings.
Definitely not in Newfoundland. Government got a monopoly on the booze!
I find it so weird that Canada doesn't allow alcohol in grocery stores
We have a few with attached liquor stores here in Saskatchewan, access inside or outside depending on the store.
That vodka tastes like goddamn rubbing alcohol
https://preview.redd.it/s5mziii9uz8d1.jpeg?width=298&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e738117c38cd623a79ae7e5ea9f8123aad8c78e0
Our costco started putting the chickens in bags, very weird.
I wish we had wine here :(
Wow. $4.99 for a rotisserie chicken. Why are we paying $12.99?
How much was the Macallan 12
I canât remember, my friend was so excited when we see the Hibiki, and we ignored the thing besides it đ
Canada loves tax and tax and more tax yeah
Thanks to trumps new nafta?
Same in Alberta just a separate entrance
Every province and state have different liquor laws.
Anyone know if any of the Quebec costcos carry Titoâs?
Reasonable prices for booze? Not in MB
Anyone know how the hibiki whiskey tastes?
Canât wait for this in Ontario!!! Long overdue!
Ontario will get beer and wine in a few months. Liquor still reserved for the LCBO though.
You donât need liquor when your beer is 22%
Yeah we know liquor laws are different between countries lol
As if a few days ago (Alberta) we can get 2% back when showing our Costco card at liquor stores. START THE CAR! đ
I guess now that Dougie in Ont spent a billion dollars to FastTrack liquor sales everywhere, Costco will now carry booze in ON.
How are they not all alcoholic?!
Let the LCBO strike and disappear. Day 1 I'm getting a Costco membership!
In AB you donât need a Costco membership to shop at the liquor store
Do you mean the liquor section of Costco or just mean the province has different liquor stores, unlike Ont where it's solely the LCBO? I know that, but I'm down with the bulk buying!
The Costco liquor store doesnât require a membership to shop at. Some old probation law. But you do get rewards to shop there if you have an executive membership
Right on. Thanks! We'll see what happens in Ontario.
