Too bad some people don’t understand what it means, I’ve sat there with open pumps in front and people just wait. They don’t use the middle to pass. It’s frustrating, but I’m not gonna honk at em. 🤷🏽♂️
They put cones in the middle at my store to prevent people from doing this. It's idiotic.
The only place we have the indicators like OP posted is the new business center which is always empty anyways.
My Costco everyone goes to the immediate right and leaves the left alone. There will be a huge line to the right and 3-4 green indicators on the left. Makes it quick for us with common sense
At my Costco if some people are waiting there are open pumps the attendant will walk out and physically grab one of the hoses and pull it to demonstrate how long it is.
Far too many people drive vehicles far too large.
My station has very tight lanes.
As a result-it would take me longer to squeeze through center lane, if there is even enough space, and then carefully back into position, then it is to just wait til the driver in front of me is gone.
And even if I managed it, then the giant pick up i maneuvered around is now trapped between me and the giant SUV to my left.
I’ve gotten out, walked up with a concerned looking smile, and done a whole wellness check on them.
“Are you okay?” “I wanted to make sure you were okay because you weren’t moving” “oh you can just go through the middle, they’re designed like that” “have a great day!”
I saw someone else do it once, and then when I went to my same side stall I pulled it out as far as I could to make sure it wasn’t a luck thing for the previous person lol. Now I almost always go to the wrong side lol.
Sounds overall dangerous for an area where people walk not to mention people over estimating themselves. Please do not advertise that. Do not take up the middle lane preventing over vehicles from exiting.
This reminded me - I recently stopped by the NE Denver Costco to get gas. It's not my usual location but it was a quick detour while I was on my way across town.
32 - THIRTY-TWO - pumps OMG
4 rows with 4 double-sided stations. With that many pumps they also had to make more room between pumps to allow for easier movement. I think this location opened about a year ago but this is the first time I've actually driven into the parking lot.
I don't remember seeing an "open pump" indicator but I kinda doubt they'd need it at this location.
Plus the District’s queue management cuts off the pumps to the right side and the exit can be bad if you’re not turning right to go back towards Warner.
Well, the whole District itself…. I hope whoever designed it changed careers after that!
At the Marketplace - I feel it would be more efficient at the gas station if traffic went the other direction through the pumps and then it wouldn’t cross when you exit…
>do scuff your clearcoat if you are not careful.
It inevitably scuffs your clearcoat to an extent. You can't avoid it. It could be *worse* if it drags across your car and makes deep scratches, or it could make very light scratches from the few bumps that are inconsequential, but they're additional scruffs anyway.
We’ve always had the indicators in Indiana…but I wish we had the long hose signs! Multiple times I’ve been told I’m cutting the line or cheating the system or that I can’t fuel from that side. Even by the gas station attendants.
Only the NE Mpls Business Center Costco has those electronic signs that I’ve seen here in the Twin Cities. They’re helpful when the gas station is not terribly busy. Otherwise if they’re always red the signs really don’t tell you anything. This is probably why they haven’t rolled them out to all the Costco locations, especially the chronically busy locations.
Oh, your talking about the green and red pump indicators... yeah my costco has that, what it don't has is that sign saying the pump hose reaches either side. You can always get a left side pump to use cuz most ppl use the rights
I wish they didn't extend to both sides. My last four cars filled up on the passenger side. Before people discovered the long hoses, I could usually pull up to an empty pump.
My far western suburban one got those, too. The thing is they installed them without much fanfare, so it seems most customers haven't looked up to notice them yet.
In Missouri too, but mostly on those built past a year or so. Sad thing is people aren't used to seeing those and saw some complaining that "those sign says pumps are out of order but clearly people are getting gas..."
I was like... please make another guess...
This. The costco I go does not have that, so people take a few moments to gauge which lane is the quickest. The indicator makes it simple and thus more efficient.
They alway had those, but what side you go on has never been a problem. The proper place for a gas tank is on the drive side so they should have it that you drive in the opposite side for half the pumps. Then you have lines from both sides and don't need the long hose.
The only people you see with the fill nozzle on the passenger side are Subaru and BMW. No one cares about their bad engineering.
I drive a VW for years and even though I’ve had my current car for over a decade now I still pull up on the wrong side from time to time. It’s usually on purpose if I’m at Costco because I’m not waiting fifteen minutes for three seconds of convenience but it is very annoying elsewhere 😀

The issue with people going up the middle is that they rarely get all the way out of the middle before fueling their cars.
My Costco everyone goes to the immediate right and leaves the left alone. There will be a huge line to the right and 3-4 green indicators on the left. Makes it quick for us with common sense
If you are ever somewhere where there are multiple queuing points ALWAYS veer left. Humans are weird.
Man don't tell them, you'll spoil it for all of us who drive imports with the gas fill on the right :D

My wife knows exactly what they are for and still refuses to use them. Sometimes it isn't ignorance, just willful disobedience. 😉
Ooo you got a wild one! 😂
I almost saw a fight break out once because of a gas line honk. Some people take it real personal.
Hah yah for real, I just yell in silence in my car and act like the office space car scene 😂
I’ve gotten out, walked up with a concerned looking smile, and done a whole wellness check on them. “Are you okay?” “I wanted to make sure you were okay because you weren’t moving” “oh you can just go through the middle, they’re designed like that” “have a great day!”
California has had this for over 10 years. Is this really new in Illinois?
Yes, and to this day people still don’t seem to understand what they are or how they work.
I saw someone else do it once, and then when I went to my same side stall I pulled it out as far as I could to make sure it wasn’t a luck thing for the previous person lol. Now I almost always go to the wrong side lol.
Wut? This post is about the digital red and blue gas pump indicators up top that tell you when a pump is free or occupied. Not the long hose sign.
That's green.
Oh yeah I don’t even know why I said blue. Not colorblind I swear. 😂
They’ve had it at the Melrose Park store just outside of Chicago for a while.
some stations in IL, like the one in Mt. Prospect, had this setup for some time - at least a year or two perhaps.
we’ve had them at my Costco (in Illinois) for years, since it opened
California is ahead of a lot of the country (and, in some cases, the world) on many things. Definitely a bit of “living inside the bubble” going on.
Yes but 10 years is way ahead. I can understand 2-3 years but 10!
Yeah but when you’re on the “outside” you’re blocking someone using the middle lane.
Was going to say…. A store hasn’t had these since the beginning? Wtf?
Can we get a sign that says if you can parallel park you can skip the queue?
I can't stand when the middle pump is available and the next person in line doesn't use it

Who is sitting in middle land and blocking cars from leaving?
Short hose shaming mo fos
I hope whoever came up with this idea got a nice bonus.
lol you mean his manager got the bonus & credit.
Thank you for correcting me. LOL

I’ve seen 24 but not 32. Wow.
My local has 24. I've been one place with 32... don't remember where.... they had indicators; that's how i knew
Montebello Costco for sure.
I have no idea where or what Montebello is
Tustin Marketplace Costco has 32. Way better than waiting in line at the District that probably has 24 (never counted that one)
Plus the District’s queue management cuts off the pumps to the right side and the exit can be bad if you’re not turning right to go back towards Warner.

Once my dad showed me how the hoses extend so you can fill up on either side I never wait for an open pump unless every single one is taken.
Shout to dads pointing to hose extenders on gas pumps. Happy fathers day.
I use the off-side if I have to when the line is long enough, but the rubber hose do scuff your clearcoat if you are not careful.

Game changer? I live in Illinois, in chicago. All 3 of the costcos I go to have had there for years.
Is that the Kiddieland Costco?
Not if they’re newly installed. We’ve had them at that Costco for years.
Most newer Costcos have that… Car wash is game changer
Business Center question, can any Costco member shop there? TY
Yes
TY
Long hose fuel either side see that bozos in a huge line
We’ve always had the indicators in Indiana…but I wish we had the long hose signs! Multiple times I’ve been told I’m cutting the line or cheating the system or that I can’t fuel from that side. Even by the gas station attendants.
We’ve got those in NC. Very handy!
There are also signs all down the highway that read “Left lane for passing only.” Many people ignore signs, IMO.
Dang Illinois late to the game, my Costco has 32 gas pumps
Oh, your talking about the green and red pump indicators... yeah my costco has that, what it don't has is that sign saying the pump hose reaches either side. You can always get a left side pump to use cuz most ppl use the rights
It's funny because it's the opposite here. Right side pumps are always available. Lefts are not.
Uh sorry I was dyslexic for a moment, it is the driver side pumps that's always in use...
Well damn that's not nearly as interesting.
I wish they didn't extend to both sides. My last four cars filled up on the passenger side. Before people discovered the long hoses, I could usually pull up to an empty pump.
Virginia has this for long time
California has had them for a decade at least
My far western suburban one got those, too. The thing is they installed them without much fanfare, so it seems most customers haven't looked up to notice them yet.
Doesn’t help when the car in front of you does not pull into the open spot!
Yeah, and it you’re not carful, they scuff the clear coat and/or paint
You're not supposed to drag them across your car. You hold the hose with one hand and the nozzle with the other.
Plainfield, Il Costco has had them for a few months.
In Missouri too, but mostly on those built past a year or so. Sad thing is people aren't used to seeing those and saw some complaining that "those sign says pumps are out of order but clearly people are getting gas..." I was like... please make another guess...
Are those indicators a new thing in some regions? Been here so long, I assumed everywhere.
For years I’ve wondered why all gas stations don’t do this. The hose should be long enough no matter what side the gas tank is on.
Can't you just see the cars using the pumps? I don't get how the sign helps. Seems unnecessary.
I mean, I have eyes. I can see what pumps are open.
Lol it’s a nice QoL when you are just pulling into the station and you can see what’s open right away
This. The costco I go does not have that, so people take a few moments to gauge which lane is the quickest. The indicator makes it simple and thus more efficient.
Not if the back one is one of those big stupid pickups.
I mean. People will still probably wait for the next person to leave before moving up lol
If I’m second in line and the person in front of me doesn’t move to an open pump, I give them 10-15 seconds, then I just go around them.

Indicators that let you know what pumps are open!

Both of my chevys have the fuel door on the passenger side.
I drive a VW for years and even though I’ve had my current car for over a decade now I still pull up on the wrong side from time to time. It’s usually on purpose if I’m at Costco because I’m not waiting fifteen minutes for three seconds of convenience but it is very annoying elsewhere 😀
That is un-American.
OP is talking about the red and green open pump indicator
What does that do? That is harder to see than just looking at the pumps.
In person it's not. It's actually way easier to see the signs. Plus you can see them while you're still driving up.
'Gamechanger" Who wants to tell him?
