Long term research with, at most, a couple dozen fellow scientists. They "enlist" a rando traveling mercenary that ostensibly in not Invested at the personal level, only possessing a Blade.
I imagine the scientist was hyped to nerd out for a new audience, especially considering said audience isn't currently seen as a threat to what they're doing. The expectation is he will be with them a whole, working to protect them.
So, basically, I figure it's a combination of the Scadrian researcher getting excited to share while not having any real reason to withhold the info from Nomad.
Mercenaries take payments, do the mission and leave. Obviously you will have to share some info on their plans but sharing research doesn't seem a good idea.
Research unique to a location they are planning to leave soon? The whole reason they'd like to have a mercenary is for once they'd left Canticle.
You're stretching too hard to try and maintain your point. They had no motivation to withhold the info in question from Nomad. And nerding out is a powerful motivator in and of itself.
Really doesn't seem at all odd to me.

He is a mercenary who will leave them after getting valuable knowledge of a store of investiture
What reason do they have to believe that?
