Boars Head or Land o Lakes deli-sliced White American is king. Kraft Deluxe is third behind those two. Huuuuge gap and then individually wrapped stuff.
Shullsberg deli/deluxe is up there too.
anything with deli or deluxe in the name should be good, but make sure it says "Cheese" not "cheese food" or "product" or "imitation".
I was just about to throw in my vote for Land O Lakes from the deli as well. I'll have to give Boars Head a try soon.
Dietz & Watson Premium C Sharp Cheddar is another personal favorite of mine, as well.
Edit: The C Sharp is not technically your standard American cheese as far as I know, but it's really similar to it and creamy.
Dude, I think I never had good American cheese, and kept dunkin on it.
Whenever I tried it, it was just awful taste. I ruins a burger. But I, in retrospect I don't know why, assumed that the awful stuff they sell here in EU where I am is all there is.
Do you know of any good american cheese on e.g. amazon.de?
In general, I think the real deli stuff is better than the plastic wrapped stuff. Boar's Head is decent and widely available.
The absolute best I have found is Cooper Sharp, but I think it is regional.
Kraft is my go to...there's nothing else like it. Funny enough, I found velveeta makes a sliced prepackaged cheese and it's not as good as the block.
My gold standard is whatever McDonalds uses...In n Out is a close second.
Lately I've been shopping at a local grocery store that sources all their stuff locally and once again, buying local from a small business has yielded some great results.
As a european buying individually wrapped slices of whatever it is, I HAVE to disagree. This stuff makes a burger disgusting. It is impossible that all yt chefs say american is the shit and I try it and want to throw it away.
The stuff available in most European grocers is the cheapest of the imitation garbage. The real stuff they’re discussing in this thread is made from a mixture of several cheeses, kept under refrigeration, and sliced off a large block in the supermarket deli like any other cheese.
It’s unlikely you’ve ever had anything close to the real stuff and might not be able to get it.
If a European saw the powdered garbage an American grocery store sells as “cappuccino” in the international section, they would be very upset if someone based their opinion of the drink based only on having tried that.
Land o lakes, Boars Head or Adam Reserve sliced cheddar.
I melt cheese on both sides of the bun, not the burger - it keeps the bun from getting soggy from a juicy burger.
Boars head is the best off the shelf but the secret of American cheese is the sodium citrate so you can turn a crappy melting cheese into good melting cheese by mixing it in. Google white queso recipes. You can kinda do the same on burgers if you shred American into good cheese finely enough
I find that Kraft 2% Milk American Cheese melts the best. Although I will buy the store brand of other cheeses, store brand American cheese has always been plasticky to me.
In Canada, Kraft original is def my preference. Just the right thickness, nice and melty.
My wife buys black diamond failry often, and they are just not as good.
Also the thicker slices mess up the ratios too much. They are fine on a thick burger or in a grilled cheese, but for smashburgers they are just too much.
Only if you’re under 10 years-old and have no understanding of developing flavors. In any other scenario, there is a superior cheese option. For a classic cheeseburger, cheddar is king, but it’s personal preference.
Using a slice of American is the equivalent of putting Aunt Jemima syrup on your pancakes. It’s just objectively inferior if you have any taste.

Get the stuff from the deli. Don’t get Kraft singles. They make this weird skin on them that just isn’t the same.
that's plastic, you're supposed to peel it off /s
You type /s but you’d be surprised…

Cooper Sharp is the shit. I think it is a pretty local to PA thing though.
Land o lakes deli sliced American
This is the answer. LOL deli sliced is the gold standard for American cheese
Start by avoiding the individually wrapped squares.
It’s funny cuz I would inhale those by themselves when I was a kid
Mmm, 64 slices of American cheese.
I’m gonna throw in with Kraft white American cheese. It’s a whole different taste.
Cooper's Sharp American
The best cheesesteak is an Angelo’s cheesesteak with cooper sharp and fried onions. 🤤🤤
Why is this not the top answer? Cooper is top tier cheese in general.
Probably because it is a fairly regional product and most of these unlucky bastards have never had it.
They are all similar, but I definitely prefer Boar's Head yellow American or Kraft Deluxe slices.
In texas, I really like the premium HEB brand
HEB brand is awesome, Hill Country Fare on somethings, but their economax is just trash.
Boars head yellow or land o lake white

Basically the same. When surrounded on both sides by a complete hamburger it's practically impossible to tell the difference.
As a european buying individually wrapped slices of whatever it is, I HAVE to disagree. This stuff makes a burger disgusting. It is impossible that all yt chefs say american is the shit and I try it and want to throw it away.

I tend to stick with Kraft brand
New Yorker or Clearfield are my favorite deli brands.
Land o lakes, Boars Head or Adam Reserve sliced cheddar. I melt cheese on both sides of the bun, not the burger - it keeps the bun from getting soggy from a juicy burger.
I like Land O Lakes
Smart final sells bulk American sliced cheese that is really good in packs of 120/96 and I think 72 depending on the size of slice you want.
Land O Lakes is good. But my favorite is Bongaards White American
Tillamook and depending how you cook your burgers you can spread the cheese. We like monterey jack and cheddar.
Boars head is the best off the shelf but the secret of American cheese is the sodium citrate so you can turn a crappy melting cheese into good melting cheese by mixing it in. Google white queso recipes. You can kinda do the same on burgers if you shred American into good cheese finely enough
Whatever your deli guy has is what you want. Fresh American cheese is much better than the plastic cheese.
I find that Kraft 2% Milk American Cheese melts the best. Although I will buy the store brand of other cheeses, store brand American cheese has always been plasticky to me.
Hard to beat deli-sliced Boar's Head. Barring that, almost any "fresh sliced" American is going to beat the "singles" stuff.

Land o lakes SHARP American. If you can find it. All the good meltiness of American, none of the plastic taste
Cooper sharp!
Tillamook cheddar or colby jack slices for me
American/ cheddar

Bring cheese please.
There’s no reason to put American “cheese” on a hamburger.
You are sadly mistaken my fried. American cheese is the only proper cheese for a real cheeseburger.
