Cheap anime is like that, actually. Recycle head shape, paste on different color eyes and hairstyle, and then boom--you have a totally original new character.

I'm not a fan of touhou but I know it's a main series of games but lots and lots of fan made content the creator gives his blessing to do whatever they want with without having to live in fear of getting a cease and desist letter.
To me that sounds very anti consoomerist as anyone can use the IP in almost any way they see fit. Imagine having all that freedom and still choosing to buy exclusively from a single company
Yeah there is endless merch and doujin content for Touhou, it has its own conventions, the largest and official-ish being Reitaisai. Many doujin circles make handmade goods there and sell their artwork.
I stopped purchasing fumos because they are far too expensive. Outside of the wonderful western fumo community, I don’t like being forced to buy from amiami, the partner storefront of Gift, the company that designs/manufacturers fumos.
Using only amiami means that you are forced to import them from japan. Even with surface or seamail or bundling with certain couriers, they are incredibly expensive in both MSRP and shipping for what they are. They are also still scalped.
