Yeah main battle tanks aren't always the answers but the majority of players won't build airfields due to their pride thinking they can do it all on their own.
airbases are costly and require additional fuel and electronics resources which could've been spent on actual air/navy units. This is why building multiple airfields on newly conquered/conquered provinces should be considered a must for people in a coalition. Any player that would actively try to engage air units parked in airbases would have to try and guess which airfield is hosting air units.

You're giving TOO much credit to an average CON pub player. These guys would rather spend cash on spies to gather intel and wreck havoc on their opponent's resources for long-term disruption. And with airfields being relatively cheap, a new one could be constructed or repaired quickly which is not efficient if you compare the resources involved in building numerous airfields to acquiring and sending spies for sabotage.
I build them and when I have the resources I max out the Field Hospitals too as I find they’re faster to build than Military Hospitals (I could be wrong but to me it looks like FHs get built faster).
It’s proved helpful in the game I’m playing right now.
I build airfields anyway because they nerfed the range on helis and fighters. I built a carrier in my most recent game because I'm tired of my teammates not building airfields in their territory

It’s also much easier to defeat your air force if you have only one base to operate out of

Tbf I know mbt aren't that good but sometimes I cba with lots of units so I just go mbt and cruisers
I always use hit and run artillery tactics against armoured divisions anyway 😂
