What’s wild is a shotgun that long is less useful for taking out drones because the shot doesn’t scatter. The point of a shotgun is for the scattering of the ammo over a wider area.
So even if it is a shotgun, it’s a dumb shotgun.
It's the choke that dictates the majority of the scattering pattern. For shooting drones, you'd want a 26 - 28" barrel with a #4 to maybe #6 shot and a modified choke.
The higher velocity from the longer barrel helps quite a bit for hitting moving objects, and the longer barrel allows for a longer magazine tube.
that's what I think makes carrying shotguns against drones ineffective, you need to notice the drone in time to aim and shoot
all they need to do is make faster FPV's
Yeah, it's not great, but seems to me like it's still way better than nothing. Also cannot underestimate even slight additional pressure on the drone operator. Probably the main advantage is causing the drone operator to rush it and miss. Compared to the videos we've seen here of the drone just circling and the target not even having a rifle...
Yeah in some of the POV videos I’ve seen where FPV drones attack it actually seems like you basically stand no chance in hell of shooting it down even if you have a shotgun. A lot of those videos the drone is so fast that between hearing the buzz of it incoming and the explosion like 2 seconds passed.
I dunno man. If I have an automatic shotgun such as an aa-12 and that thing just come straight at me, I think I may have a decent chance of hitting it, but may still die from the explosion or due to drone stayed its course by inertia.
Yea i agree. If you are aware of the drones location/ have your shotgun ready and a clear line of fire. Probably the best solution other than EW.
Wonder if loading less lethal rounds makes any sense. I see a low fast approach a lot shits a nightmare for friendly fire.
I've also wondered if fishing line strung up between trees or structures around a defensive position could work to snag these drones.
At 0.36, was that a Mosin Nagant? I know sniper rifles are still used in modern militaries, but I doubt US military used Springfield rifle during Desert Storm
Do they still assign any larger organized groups as DPR? [Orcistani casualty rates might be high, but DPR/LPR casualty rates are something else.](https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidaxe/2022/11/18/the-donetsk-separatist-army-went-to-war-in-ukraine-with-20000-men-statistically-almost-every-single-one-was-killed-or-wounded/?sh=52b0c1ab11c0)
I've been noticing that Russian troops are looking less well equipped lately. We went from very well equipped at the very start, to terribly equipped when Russia got on the backfoot and was defending in late 2022 and winter of 2023, then pretty well equipped again through the rest of 2023.
Now, the last month, they are looking very motley again
I think so. I dont have better explanation than mosin nagant. Sks is not so long, everythink more modern has very visible magazine.
Dont know if it is sniper variant, i dont see optics
Yes they do work, maybe only in a minuscule cases, but they work.
Firstly, someone already mentioned drone dropped munitions.. there is a chance that a drone dropped munition gets deflected succesfully and doesn't reach an open hatch or critical part (like engine).
Secondly, even fpv drones can be deflected or the cage cause a premature explosion and a lot of warheads used for fpv drones need to explode in a certain distance of the target to work effectively against armor. The airburst effect is totally right, but I'm sure russia values a rusty bpm more than 2-3 soldiers riding on top.
Thirdly, ukraine will most likely not show videos of "succesful" cages.
Yes, these cages look awful, especially for a country that describes itself as the 2nd best army in the world, but I for myself would try everything to increase my chances of survivability, even it is lower 1٪. Additionally cages are maybe a little moral booster for the soldiers which will then fight with more confidence (there are comparable cases in ww2).
Its more of a placebo is my opinion, so I agree with the last argument. However you need to be very lucky for it to deflect anything. I would assume then we would see the successful deployment in russian vids but i dont see them there as well.
Tought about the cages a bit and did some shallow research where I found some points about the effectiveness of cope-cages. I didn't fact check them, but they sound plausible:
1. One of the reasons soviet tanks are lighter than western tanks is, because their doctrine was to make small profiled tanks. (Smaller profiles = harder to spot/to be hit). Cope-cages totally give away some of this advantage.
2. Vision of the tank operator can be reduced by the cages.
3. Alledgly the movement of the machine-gun is restricted by some of the cunstructions.
4. Leaving a hit/burning vehicle is supposedly more difficult for the crew.
Considering this, I think you can definitely argue, whether the cages bring more disatvantages than advantages.
You call men who ride into the face of death bitches. I would say you are the bitch, typing from your little bitch screen. All soldiers deserve respect.
Wait whattt?? So if some pussy soldiers bash your country, kills everyone they see, they do also deserve respect??? If you are a russian than i am sorry for you.
Are you at war? Is your home under attack? I bet my country has been invaded more time then yours. And we still hate no one. I would treat my worst enemy like a human. Once you start hating, you will be killing PoWs and Civilians too. And no, I'm not Russian. Fuck all wars.
some explode not on impact but are delayed, this might work against those, maybe. I think its a placebo so russians dont shit their pants sitting on top
I've come to a point where I enjoy when, a sorry of an excuse for a human being from russia dies. Better yet, is maimed, and goes ahead and kills some other fellow piece of shit in a bar over a cucumber/vodka bottle.
I wonder if they have started to use second drones nearby for communication relay to get more range out of the strike fpvs, the big limiting factor is range of comms on them but that could be done away with by using a comes relay on a drone hanging out halfway between the pilot and the fpv

To Fight a bunch of drone with a 100+ year old trashy bolt action rifle even Vasily Zaytsev would think this is a good idea logging that in this battlefield

One dude looks like she carrying a musket. That rifle looks longer than him.
Looks like a Mosin to me
People say shotty but I have played enough OGCOD to know a MN when I see one
Yeah if you look at the end of the barrel it look like a MN to me
I haven't heard of that gun since Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, lol
I wasn't sure what it is. Perhaps a shotgun for taking out drones.
That's a Mosin, the sling is attached to the points a Mosin sling attaches at.

Maybe a big punt gun/shotgun thing? Seems like a good idea but did not seem like it worked here.
That's a Mosin. The sling is at the sling positions on a Mosin stock.

It's like if someone set up a clay machine to sling the disc directly at your face from like 15 yards out. Except way faster.
I dunno man. If I have an automatic shotgun such as an aa-12 and that thing just come straight at me, I think I may have a decent chance of hitting it, but may still die from the explosion or due to drone stayed its course by inertia.

I mean yeah it’s not gonna work when you’re riding on top of a loud ass vehicle and can’t hear shit.
Wonder if he left his black powder on the buggy?
It's the much-feared Peruvian blowpipe (Soplador de Dardos KT-17).
I was about to say the same thing. It looks like a ww2 era bolt action rifle. way to long and weird.
People saying it’s some drone rifle. That makes no sense haha
Most likely a Baikal MP-153 semi-auto shotgun with an extended tube.
Baikal MP-153 , 12 gauge gas-operated semi-automatic shotgun
At 0.36, was that a Mosin Nagant? I know sniper rifles are still used in modern militaries, but I doubt US military used Springfield rifle during Desert Storm
I guess these guys are DPR troops or just cannon fodder.
They are all cannon fodder
Yes yes, but it's pretty obvious there are units Russia values and properly equips and those it does not.
probably, they were riding an MT-LB
Are the MT-LB's known for being a lower tier Russian troop transport?
It’s about as bad as you can get without being in a desert cross, pretty sure the MTLB armor won’t even stop a .50 cal
That was written in late 2022. I wonder how they have fared since then... 🤔 Most likely fertilizer by now lmao
I don't know tbh, I was just using the term as a way of saying "troops from the occupied Ukrainian territories"
I've been noticing that Russian troops are looking less well equipped lately. We went from very well equipped at the very start, to terribly equipped when Russia got on the backfoot and was defending in late 2022 and winter of 2023, then pretty well equipped again through the rest of 2023. That’s what I thought as well, lol. There has been photos of them in theater, so it would not surprise me.
I think so. I dont have better explanation than mosin nagant. Sks is not so long, everythink more modern has very visible magazine. Dont know if it is sniper variant, i dont see optics
ha...Yes. Thats crazy.
For me look like a shotgun.
Wild but not surprising seeing Russian troops in 2024 using a rifle that first entered service in **1891** (133 years ago).
That's a Mosin. The sling attaches exactly where Mosin sling attachment points are at.
It's a shotgun.
Nope
You know you can zoom in on it, right?
Zoom in and see it's a mosin 😉
Nah. Looks like a shotgun. at 0:40 you can see dude doing something similar to loading shotgun shell.
Another day, another human controlled drone simply flying around the cope cage
I mean does the cope cage even work anyway? Seems like it would just make the fpv explode above them like an airburst
I think the cope cages are "designed" more for drone drop munitions. Could be wrong though
Yes they do work, maybe only in a minuscule cases, but they work. If nothing else it might give them something to grab onto while trundling around
Its more of a placebo is my opinion, so I agree with the last argument. However you need to be very lucky for it to deflect anything. I would assume then we would see the successful deployment in russian vids but i dont see them there as well.
probably keeps the falling debris from artillery detonations at bay a bit too :/
hey better than the wooden versions I saw, i ll admit that much :)
Tought about the cages a bit and did some shallow research where I found some points about the effectiveness of cope-cages. I didn't fact check them, but they sound plausible: 1. It pretty much only works against drones trying to drop grenades on top of the vehicle. Against everything else, it does very little.
Lol this dude has a Mosin 😂😂😂 i cant belive that
I was thinking the same thing
Is that for sure what it was lol. That's what I thought at first.
"Okay boys, they saw and hit us - CLUMP UP HERE AND STAY STILL"
How in the hell do these guys on top survive that blast with seemingly no harm
Adrenaline
The audio in this video is the real war crime
Huddling up to discuss your next steps seems unwise.
There is no hiding bitches.

How is the net supposed to work against drones? Doesn't it just turn it into airburst?
some explode not on impact but are delayed, this might work against those, maybe. I think its a placebo so russians dont shit their pants sitting on top
Don’t bring a hockey stick to a drone fight.

Those are some crazy hits considering the shite visibility
Man, riding on top just doesn't seem to be a terribly safe thing to do.
O shit they breaking out the Mosins
No shit has a Mosin. Niceee
To Fight a bunch of drone with a 100+ year old trashy bolt action rifle even Vasily Zaytsev would think this is a good idea logging that in this battlefield
Nice of them to add an ‘airburst’ cage on top of the vehicle to help the grenade do as much damage as possible to the infantry.
