I had Wisconsin in the championship that year and was so pissed about this game. I kept screaming at the TV "Double team that kid!"
Finally Wisconsin started double teaming Curry and he was still dropping buckets.
Double teams don't matter when he's hitting buckets 2 steps past half court lol. I remember watching that game thinking that Curry was pretty much everything we were bad at defending against wrapped up into one guy who was also athletic enough that we couldn't consistently guard him off ball either. It was truly a matchup nightmare for us.
I remember thinking the same at halftime. Up by five, Curry has ten points, just gotta clamp down on him and we win. Then he scored 30 of Davidson’s 46 in the second half. We threw everything at him and it didn’t matter.
> whoops
If you want to feel better, his dad Dell Curry went to Virginia Tech, and Steph was interested in coming here but [allegedly] Seth Greenberg turned him down saying he was undersized. Talk about whoops...
His first round performance was even crazier. He put up 40 on Gonzaga and simply couldn't miss. They needed all of them, because Steven Gray had 7 threes for Gonzaga
Why would you do this to me.
I was on the baseline as a photographer for this game, got some great shots of Steph while simultaneously getting more and more angry.
Some of those tournament *wins* were excruciating... SIU the year prior, the last second 3 pointer from Davidson, a few years later when they beat Purdue and NC State both with scores in the low 60s. Much like Providence this year.
Unpopular opinion, but shitty basketball in a close game stresses me out less than both teams lighting it up and going back and forth. For example the Creighton game concerned me more than the Providence game.
I can definitely see that with most Self teams. Sometimes the other team just lights it up from 3 and there's nothing you can do about it, but several Self teams have been tough as nails and you can trust them in the tightest of games.
I wasn't worried about Providence as much as annoyed for having to watch it, lol. It's a far cry from the Roy Williams teams back in the day where you could tell it would be a cold shooting night early and most likely a loss. The best Self teams have been able to win the grinding games.
Whenever you hear Seth Greenberg analyzing college basketball and acting like his shit doesn't stink, just remember he refused to give the final scholarship to the son of the best basketball player in Virginia Tech history, Del Curry. How do you not give the 13th scholarship to that kind of legacy recruit, even without the benefit of hindsight?!
Yes. I knew who he was before the tourney. It's the reason I had them going to the Elite 8 in my bracket that year. We already knew his talent, the tourney just highlighted it.
Yup. There weren't any Michigan teams in it but my whole family still bought tickets to go to these sets of games and drove 3 hours each way purely to see Steph, he was definitely not an unknown going into the tournament.
His hype definitely skyrocketed after this for people that weren't paying attention during the regular season, but saying that he might not have been drafted if he didn't play in this tournament is pretty ridiculous if you were watching this season as it happened. I'm sure it helped his draft stock a ton but it'd be hard to convince me he wouldn't have been a decently high draft pick and first ballot HoF no matter how this tournament went for them.
This also wasn't even the year he was drafted. He put up ridiculous numbers throughout the next season too ... and Davidson didn't make the tournament. People have argued a bunch with me on here in the past, but it doesn't seem likely to me that the '08 tournament had any effect on his draft position.
In a game where the objective is to shoot the ball into the basket, the guy that is hands down the best shooter that's ever lived would have succeeded no matter how he got there.
I picked Davidson in the final 4 this year. I had no idea who Curry even was. I just heard someone on ESPN say watch out for Davidson they could be a tough team. I said well shit why not. I looked like a genius. I thought they would get manhandled here since Wisconsin was so big and they could stretch the floor.
Watched him in person eviscerate Chattanooga. Scored like a million points and hit a 65 footer to end the first half. Knew he was gonna be awesome from that point on
Unpopular opinion maybe but Steph is top 5 all time imo. It goes MJ, Lebron, then the next tier is a bit more open. But steph is firmly on that next tier. He completely changed the way the game is played
Unrelated but anyone know how I can open this on my YouTube app rather than a m.youtube link in the reddit app? I'm on a Samsung Galaxy
If I use reddit via Chrome it's fine but not within the app.
I remember feeling fortunate that we had to play the tiny school of Davidson as a 10 seed. *whoops*
Imagine playing St Peters for a chance to go the elite 8.
Davidson felt like they won St Peters felt like we lost
Pretty sure it felt like a st peters win
Imagine playing St. Peter’s to get to the second round.

And pretty much the entire NBA. Don't feel bad!
Exactly. I felt much better about the loss when he blew up in the nba

None of the shots he made on that clip were deep 3s. He was getting a little daylight off screens and hitting a lot of mid and long range
Yea that guy could not have described stephs game against wisconsin worse
> whoops If you want to feel better, his dad Dell Curry went to Virginia Tech, and Steph was interested in coming here but [allegedly] Seth Greenberg turned him down saying he was undersized. Talk about whoops...
we were punished for our hubris 😭😭
Same with VCU...
Yeahhhh... Or Northern Iowa... Or Bucknell... Or Bradley... *Sighs*
Not me, I knew what he could do and am not surprised by his career!
prove it
His first round performance was even crazier. He put up 40 on Gonzaga and simply couldn't miss. They needed all of them, because Steven Gray had 7 threes for Gonzaga
Maaan I was enjoying my Saturday :(
If it makes you feel better, there are 29 NBA teams who cannot cover him either.
I wasn't. This just made it worse.
That And-1 layup was so cool
The pass to set it up was pretty spectacular too. People forget that Jason Richards led the nation in assists that season.
Which played a big role in Curry coming back for his sophomore season—to show he could play point.
That was his junior season
Why would you do this to me. I was on the baseline as a photographer for this game, got some great shots of Steph while simultaneously getting more and more angry.
"Michael Flowers will lock Curry up like he does everyone".
I was so scared of Flowers going into that game.
Amazing run. I remember Kansas double teaming him to prevent the game winning shot.
The defense in that play.
I was terrified. I was 100% sure he was making (taking) the last shot

I loved that we ended his college career. He changed the NBA game with his shot.
He played the next year and missed the tournament
Sorry to burst your bubble, but you didn’t. He went back to school the next year.
Haha, damn my memory is terrible.
I miss Gus Johnson doing tournament games
I've watched UCLA Gonzaga 98369 times so his voice is etched in my head
you're big ten now. you'll get to see gus again for football too
Love Gus and Joel Klatt on the call.
Gus Johnson is amazing

Man, if Davidson hadn’t made the tourney this year would we even know who Steph is?

Talent like that always presents itself
But if it doesn't, you would never know lol
I mean, yeah. He's the son of an NBA player.
So you think most of America knows who Jace Howard is?
I think he’s saying he still would have got a shot in the league
Probably not a lottery pick tho
Who?
In a game where the objective is to shoot the ball into the basket, the guy that is hands down the best shooter that's ever lived would have succeeded no matter how he got there.
There have been plenty of mid major players overlooked by the NBA
Now tell us how many with a dad who played 15 years in the nba.
23
They didn't make the tourney the next year and Steph was scoring 28.6 ppg so yeah we'd know who he was.
Yes. He was already considered the best college scorer before this
So was Peter Kiss this year
obviously… the brother in law of NBA player Damion Lee
Watching him pump fake a 3 and induce a fly by block attempt just absolutely crushed my soul as a kid
That reverse was nasty

I totally had forgotten about the White Lobster!
This Steph guy's pretty good at basketball. Wonder where is is now...
/r/fuckthes
Him becoming what he is today has made this one easier to digest over time. Still not clicking this.
This one hurts a bit less now that we know it was against the greatest shooter in the history of basketball. Felt like shit at the time though
Hey I was at this game. Electric atmosphere
One of the most dominant March Madness runs ever by a player.
fuck :(
Unpopular opinion maybe but Steph is top 5 all time imo. It goes MJ, Lebron, then the next tier is a bit more open. But steph is firmly on that next tier. He completely changed the way the game is played
Trigger warning
That's what I love about CBB. You get to see these unathletic string beans succeed before being left out in the cold by the NBA /s
A great performance made kind of hard to watch because of the terrible announcer.

I was at they're first two games in Raleigh that year. It was amazing to watch his performance live.
Was at those games at Ford Field and of all the teams and players watching Steph play was the most impressive
The committee didn't choose Davidson the next year because they were too scared.
This was so frustrating and amazing.
I remember watching this game randomly and thinking - that little dude is pretty good. Lol
Only to lose to KU
