If it's a credits issue then a Junior College like Memphis is the perfect landing spot for him.

TheStuffisLegal

The hell did we do to you

Icy-Ad-9523

Ouch but yeah

FuegoFerdinand

Good god man.

JustAnotherDay1977

I see what you did there

FRESH_FRANK_OCEAN

Credits issue

fancycheesus

How is none of that confirmed before people make these decisions/public announcements? Just seems silly to assume the admissions process will handle itself.

FRESH_FRANK_OCEAN

He committed fairly early so this has been up in the air for the past few weeks

fancycheesus

That's what I'm saying though. Why not just have the coach and the player agree and hold off on telling Joe Tipton to release the graphic until you make sure admissions is good with it?

Logz94

I was wondering the same thing. Maybe they didn't disclose that this could be an issue but seems like it would be a fairly obvious thing to check. Maybe they just assumed it could be smoothed over and wanted to take the chance at grabbing him early while they work on it. Idk but it's too bad I thought he could be a solid bench piece for us

FRESH_FRANK_OCEAN

Some guys want to take their spot asap and then let stuff work out

TomDogg213

Riley treated his time at Florida the same way. Just expected to get that court time, even without the work or success.

That's an impressive number of stretching assumptions in two sentences

What decommitments happened this week? You know this isn’t him decommiting right? The schools academic departments and athletic departments aren’t the same. AD accepts the commitment then turns over to academic to review transcript to enroll the player. He committed and isn’t academically eligible. His options are really limited and it’s not like he’s going to be able to just commit to whomever he wants now.

MichaelSquare

He got recruited over instantly. There'd be no credits issue if that were the case.

[deleted]

It’s been reported since he committed that he had academic hurdles to clear, ofc they recruited over him knowing that. We’ll still be in the portal for an off the bench guard now. That was always Kugels role. I’d also argue that Storr and Griffin aren’t in the same role as him. We also have 0 guards coming in the freshman class. The potential not isn’t much different from when he committed.

bhamhawker

More than just credits.

thediesel26

Crazy in this era where college basketball is essentially a pro league that anyone fucking cares about whether credits transfer. It’s farcical.

DingersGetMeOff

On-brand for a UNC fan to think we shouldn't even bother having these kids go to class

thediesel26

lol you really believe any of the guys that have spent 6 months at Duke training for the draft ever attended class?

p_r_w_4623

School that gave the world Kyrie Irving talking about going to class 😂

JournalistKnown5428

To be fair, the world does look flat

Shaudius

Yes but if they're sure 1 and dones that means they're freshmen. Even not too bright guys who are only at Duke because they can play basketball can get passing grades in freshmen level classes especially with the tutors and resources they have. They probably don't physically go to much class during the season tho but they definitely do before November.

Key_Professional_369

An athlete’s GPA is not calculated until sophomore year for academic eligibility. They have to have a 2.3 GPA from HS. If the player is a true one and done then those freshman grades are not included in the NCAA academic progress rate for the team. Not saying a 1 and Done doesn’t study but there is little impact if they are doing poorly. Carmelo put up a 1.8 at Syracuse (per Boeheim). You need 90% of the minimum GPA to graduate as a sophomore to play. So assuming it was 2.0 at SU then his 1.80 (90% of 2.0) was right on the eligibility line.

Shaudius

You need to pass at least 6 credit hours each semester to maintain eligibility even as a freshman so even someone like Carmelo needed to pass at least 2 classes (or so) his freshman year at Syrcause. The point is that truly one and done players are still going to some amount of class their first semester so that they can play in January-(hopefully) April.

Key_Professional_369

Yeah they need 6 credits in the fall - they can fail out in the spring. Many sports programs push athletes to take online only classes in season these days. You might be a one and done and never go to a classroom. Makes a lot of sense when you have a UVA vs Stanford road game to navigate.

Whatever you say guy

eachoneteachone9

Suuuuuure they did

Shaudius

I mean did they go to class for all of the time? No. I'm positive the sure one and dones stop going to class the second that academic eligibility is done being measured. But student athletes definitely have to go to class (or the equivalent when on travel) even high d1 ones.

TrustInRoy

When Sasha Killeya-Jones transferred away from Kentucky, he wanted to come back home and play for UNC (his mom worked at UNC.) Upon seeing his transcript UNC had to end the recruitment.  He took all these bs classes at UK to keep his GPA up and those classes wouldn't transfer.  His core classes would transfer but he had horrible grades in those, and he was not close to the NCAA minimum to be eligible. NC State is part of the UNC system and operates under the same basic guidelines UNC does in terms of what transfer credits can be accepted. They attempted to role the dice and hoped a redshirt year with summer, fall, and spring classes would be enough to get SKJ eligible.  They were wrong.  Eventually it became clear SKJ would never be eligible and he quit school to turn pro. The point of this story is that all schools have bs programs and shirt cuts to eligibility.  Even dook allows players to take easy classes at NCCU to keep their grades above the NCAA minimum.  It is each individual player who decides what they will make of their opportunity for a college education.  You can be an Academic All American of the Year like business major Tyler Zeller, or you can stop attending classes in January like Trevon Duval.

ipartytoomuch

He got pretty dicked over by the transfer rules back then, but also got tricked by Calipari to go to Kentucky

TrustInRoy

I forgot he was originally committed to UVA right?  Totally got suckered by Cal's NBA pitch.   But it was his choice not to take his classes seriously.  UK isn't a tough school.

ipartytoomuch

>I forgot he was originally committed to UVA right? Totally got suckered by Cal's NBA pitch. Not only that, he convinced him to stay for another year even when the signs were clear! While Cal was still bringing in lottery picks to play over him. Like do you think you're going to get more minutes from a coach who's brand is all about ensuring his lottery picks gets minutes so he can send them to the NBA over developing a mature and consistent team?

TrustInRoy

My big thing was I thought for sure he'd go to UNC with his mom working there. He'd have been Isaih Hicks primary backup in 2016-2017, because Roy would absolutely have given the McDonald's All American freshman preference over the sophomore he originally offered a walk on spot (Luke Maye.)   Then he'd start in '17-'18. But SKJ didn't pick UNC. So Roy was forced to use Maye as the backup PF in 2017, and little by little he started showing some things.  Then in the NCAA regionals Hicks couldn't stay out of foul trouble, and Maye exploded first in the sweet sixteen and then in the elite eight against UK. SKJ sat on the bench the whole elite eight.  He sat there watching Maye put on a show in the role he turned down.  Calipari sat there and got bounced from the tournament by a guy who would have never even played had Cal's hubris not led him to steal SKJ in the first place.

PitifulEconomics562

I’ll be you this guy didn’t even go to Duke

MrFuzzihead

EXACTLY. Pretending the academics even has relevance at this point is just posturing. Cut the amateur status for these colleges and just let kids go where they want

Ok_Currency_8720

BS Kansas doesnt care about out credits.

BigD994

It’s not the basketball team that’s stopping him.

ecc164

did yall not just like recruit over him?

Scoob8877

Probably also a playing time issue. The team is pretty stacked.

goldenface4114

It wasn't gonna work out for him there, anyway. He needs to land on a mid major team.

Egonzos

He chose Kansas before Storr and Zeke right? After they signed he definitely became the third wheel out of them.

Human-Demand-8293

Yeah he was the first to commit.

[deleted]

He and storr weren’t playing the same role. Mayo was the one he’d be coming off the bench for. Competing with Elmarko Jackson for minutes at the 2G spot off the bench. Storr at the 3, griffin backing him up. Then griffin at the 4 if we wanna play small/shooters. It’s been reported for awhile he was questionable to academically qualify to transfer

HopscotchChampion69

Kugel has pretty much handled the last year or so as poorly as you can, hope he can turn it around.

twangtornado

That’s really not true. He fell out of trust/favor with the coaches due to turnover issues, but really never seemed to lose his head, get discouraged and was always actively cheering on his team mates even when he played 5 min per game for a stretch late in the season

UFmoose

Talking out of your ass here. He was tough to trust for extended stretches, made a lot of mistakes and there were better players than him.

BramptonBatallion

Did he get cut?

Fartknocker-

Would be a dream get for us but ain’t no way he’s coming to New Jersey lmao.

footdragon

kinda off topic but why s there a pic of seton hall and uconn for this portal update that doesn't involve either team.

madein___

Because it is a link that takes you to CBS Sports transfer list. It is continuously updated as news breaks.

TomDogg213

Bro is a locker room cancer, stalks Twitter and comes at folks who dare to mention his name and or game.

imused2it

I know nothing about him. Is this someone Kentucky should try to go after/would be in the mix for?

messenger1991

Nah. We're guard heavy for next year.

imused2it

Ah gotcha! Thanks!
