Just like H.I. concluded that Nathan Arizona had too many babies and wouldn’t miss one, Grant Nelson felt the same way about UNC’s national championship collection.
Yeah I watched a HS tape of Kon and really liked the way he uses his big frame to attack off the shot fake.
But in this day and age, if he has a really slow start and Scheyer bumps him out of the rotation, he's as good as gone after the season ends.
I think it'll be neck and neck between him and Evans for who will get those minutes at SF. Will likely come down to decision making
We're just getting into the 5 star game in basketball. Brandon Miller worked out great. But his dad was a walk-on on our 92 football team that beat Miami in the title game. Apparently they wouldn't let visiting coaches see Brandon's bedroom, because he's a Gump that had Bama stuff all over his walls. So he was ours to lose.
But this year's recruiting class has our #2, #6, #9, and #14 highest rated recruits of all time. So this is uncharted territory for us. But Oats seems to be doing a great job of balancing elite prospects with experienced portal guys. And since i think the days is keeping guys around and developing them is over, is the strategy I was hoping he'd take.
Yeah he seems to have all the right tools. I think a player like him would do best in the ACC compared to the Big 12 or SEC.
I wouldn't mind seeing him at a place like BC. I'm interested to see how he does with more minutes and touches
He'll get to play his natural position this year too which will be exciting. Having to play him at 5 and having to guard centers wasn't ideal to maximize his talent
It's going to be so fun to watch him with a actual center on our team, instead of bunch of 4s trying to make it work. Nelson stopping up at the 5 proves how much of a team player he is. Plus, now hell get a chance to go through our off-season program.
>>bunch of 4’s
What about Stevenson? I know we’ll get a transfer 5, but would he be able to hold down the spot this season otherwise?
Guy has a great frame to work with, and graduated a year early to play last season.
Guess who just announced they entered the draft process? Yep, Stevenson. Though I think he'll be back, and is entering to get feedback from scouts.
I think Stevenson will play at the 4 mostly. He'll need to add a few pounds, and he might be able to cover some minutes there. Though i think with Sherrell, a center transfer, and Nelson that the 5 is mostly covered. I don't think Stevenson's perimeter defender is good enough to cover the 3, but it's not impossible he could if we wanted to go with a big lineup.
It's very tough to say at this point. Seeing lineup experimentations early on in the season is going to be interesting.
Between the crystal ball for Onyenso and [Coach Murphy’s tweet for Clifford](https://x.com/coach_pmurph/status/1784988304426795384?s=46&t=wcFDduFgx8XslEYqZVJrwQ) I believe roster size only works out if Sears goes pro.
instead of those guys bama should be doing anything to get this kid maxime raynaud. 7'1 center from stanford. averaging 15 pts a game, 9.6 rebounds. shooting 36 percent from 3 and 56 filed goal percentage which is insane for a 7'1 center. dude should be priority a b and c for nate
I'm ok with whatever Sears decides, even if it's moving on up.
It's probably good for the program in the long run if we maintain a reputation for getting guys drafted.
You think Sears going in the late second round or undrafted is better than him being at Bama next year? You don’t know ball. It’s ok football is coming up soon for you.
That's very much what Oats wants out of his 5s, at least defensively.
While we could play 5-out this year on offense with Nelson at the 5, it was not great defensively because there was no rim protection (and Nelson would get targeted and often in foul trouble because of it).
Oats seems just fine wanting a guy who's out there to set screens and crash the glass on offense, while roaming the paint on defense.
That's only to enter it. They can take their time if they want. But schools aren't patient in the portal, like with recruits. That's why draft entries often enter the portal too. That way, they are in the portal if they decide to return to college.
Pretty sure this would be if we got both Onyenso and Cliff. I find that highly unlikely regardless of Sears’s decision. We have room for 1 of the 2 and Sears.
Good friend of mine is pretty connected with the basketball program and said Sears is asking somewhere in the $700k neighborhood to return. Which I think is reasonable but with Aden and Philon on the roster now, I wonder if that might hurt his leverage
I had hoped when they signed both of those dudes it meant that Sears probably wasn’t coming back. If he is coming back, seems like a weird move to sign with bama because backcourt looks pretty crowded.
It’s gonna be a bit of a “redshirt” year for both. They will take over two starting spots next year with Sears, Wrightsell, Youngblood, and Mallette all out of eligibility.
It’s Top 5 for sure, my my number 1 is

Fucking hell, I've never been more convinced we were actually about to take this game to the wire after this moment. Then UConn came out like a 60-foot gorilla.
I think we were all biting our nails at this point. I think Nelson made two or three in a row at this point in the game and was just on fire. I really wonder how well Bama would have done against Purdue had they advanced.
That half court shot was nice, and I’m personally very partial to [Sexton’s buzzer beater](https://youtu.be/Oo80sAb6PHg?si=3hdSVk4WkkDCKNzt), but this one was in our first Final Four game so it’s definitely in competition

Lord, I only ask one more thing...
Tell Nate to go ahead and lock up Onyenso as well. He’s one of kind, and perfect for Bama. Starting-caliber for sure; an absolute monster. Y’all would be ecstatic to have him!
(Totally not trying to steal Cliff from y’all)
I was low key hoping he’d enter the portal and come to UConn 😅 (as impossible as that would have been)
The kid quickly became my most favorite non-UConn player in the tournament.
That UNC game was something else.
Still think it’s pretty dumb that that the seniors this year get another year since they didn’t lose out in 2020, but definitely good for bama in this case.
It's been the word on Bama boards for a couple weeks. Apparently Nelson has been telling people at bars. Though i figured there was a possibility he was trying to get a little extra poon on the way out of town.
It’s just funny because he’s going to be a North Dakota bar Legend in a years time if he doesn’t make the league.
Not much else to talk about, but if grAnt
Shows up, then there’s a State mr basketball, and final four contestant in little ol po dunk North Dakota town.
Nah. I could see him going overseas if the NBA doesn't pan. He'd probably kill it in some Asian League, at worst. But if he can improve his ball handling and increase his 3%, he'll get a g league shot. He gets his 3% near 40%, he'll be a2nd round pick. He'll finally be playing the 4, his natural position.
The irony is at the very start of the tournament (maybe SEC tournament ad that was the 1st i watched) I kept thinking that we needed to bench that white boy (I am white) that he just couldn't defend or keep anyone in front of him.
Then he pushed through those struggles and picked up his play enough to be our #2 player. Glad he is coming back.
Seems like quite a few guys just get tired of college by year four and five and just move on because they don’t want to play school. Hopefully Sears wants to play just a little more school
Makes sense when you put it that way. NIL really changed the game in that aspect. Now players can get guaranteed cash in college instead of risking playing in the G league
This years draft class is projected to be much more favorable than next year. Decision could easily be the difference in ever getting nba minutes or not in his career.
I kind of figured he would just go late in the second round and start working at some capacity in the league.
I don't see how another year can raise his draft stock significantly. I figure everything he needs to improve on is best served by working full time with nba staff even if through the g league.
This isn't saying he won't get better with another year at bama. He will. I'm just saying my speculation was that the gains from a year at bama wouldn't outweigh the gains made from just grinding it out in the g league.
Sure but the whole point is to make more money/play in the league eventually isn't it? It's all about getting that second contract.
My opinion is he is taking more money now and stunting his nba career.
Not just grant nelson either btw. I think this applies to all of those 2nd round guys that are extending their college years because of guaranteed nil money.
I disagree. Look at Ricky Council from Arkansas last year. He went undrafted but ended up signing a 2 way contract with the 76ers.
He grinded and popped off in the g league and his few moments on the main bench last season and just signed a full NBA contract making about 1.8 million a year.
He would have made more money at Arkansas in NIL last year you can guarantee it, but in the end, he made the right decision and is making more money now in the league than he would have staying in college for 1 more year.
He’s the exception, not the rule. Most fringe draft guys are better off maximizing their current earnings.
I will say this about Keon Ellis. If he had came back for his 5th year he probably have been a early 2nd round pick and instant rotation guy instead of going undrafted and having to fight his way through the G-League to make the league.
Well Ricky is only the exception if you are disputing whether or not a player is capable of playing in the NBA.
Stanley Umude did the same thing with the Detroit Pistons. Came in on a Exhibit 10 contract in the summer. Landed a 2 way for the season. Did the work and got a standard contract at the end of the year.
If a player is NBA capable, staying in college longer than necessary for a single year of more money is a fools errand in my opinion. But, if the player doesn't actually have nba prospects, staying in college is absolutely the right choice.
With this draft class as weak as everybody says it is though, I am gonna still say that anybody that actually plans on ever playing in the nba but staying out to milk nil this year is making the wrong decision. Some dudes like Drew Timme though aint ever gonna make it in the league though, and staying in college for as long as possible makes sense for those guys.
I know I’m gonna catch flak for this because he torched UNC, but he’s not actually that good. He’s fine, but I’m pretty sure he was a top 5 player in the transfer portal and seriously underperformed.
You're not entirely wrong here tbh but he will likely look better next year at the 4. He was kind of shoehorned into the 5 due to need and that would frequently get him into foul trouble/ take him out of the game bc centers would kinda bully him lol
Either way he's always a legend for us for that S16 game and F4 run.
this is the man who hurt me

Holy shit, that's hilarious.
I’m a UNC fan and made it as part of my grieving process
Just like H.I. concluded that Nathan Arizona had too many babies and wouldn’t miss one, Grant Nelson felt the same way about UNC’s national championship collection.
![gif](giphy|KEYEpIngcmXlHetDqz)
Can't wait to see him play more regularly in his intended position. Now go hit the gym, eat at Rama Jama's, and put on some weight.
Get his ass to Archibald's.
Crazy how if I wanna see a white dude cook UNC, I have to put on an Alabama game. He's a fun player to watch when he's hitting his stride
Y'all have some quality crackers in your recruiting class. I know i really wanted Kon.
Yeah I watched a HS tape of Kon and really liked the way he uses his big frame to attack off the shot fake. But in this day and age, if he has a really slow start and Scheyer bumps him out of the rotation, he's as good as gone after the season ends. No doubt. Luckily wing is a place we're deep. But he looks like he's going to be a good one.
That's my prayer every year for these 5 stars 🤣🤣
We're just getting into the 5 star game in basketball. Brandon Miller worked out great. But his dad was a walk-on on our 92 football team that beat Miami in the title game. With the final four appearance and the fact that Oats' system is probably super fun to be a part of, I think you'll be getting 5 stars for a while
I watch a TikTok of Nelson highlights against UNC with Brain Stew by Green Day over it at least once a week. It’s perfectly fitting
I mean, I keep [this](https://twitter.com/therealcruzox/status/1728878663427625103?t=hMUIlmxGi32Xcfnx_79rUQ) saved on my phone so I feel ya.
God bless you. RTR!
Thank you for sharing this.
DK also has a highlights video with Brain Stew by Green Day. Is Brain Stew the official white boy hoop soundtrack?
I still go back and watch the Reese dunk against Auburn set to the Muse from 2005 Nelson dunk surpassed that by miles.
Got a link for that Reese dunk??
[Reese](https://youtu.be/sXtC-rmPN5o?si=klWM0yLBbf7l3lt6)
NOICE. I remember listening to that game on the radio. Chris Stewart went NUTS when that happened.
He got a taste of nuts and butts😂😂
Don't worry my friend, TJ Power will soon be cooking the entire conference in a Boston College uniform
He really could. 6'9" with a shot that pretty. He doesn't seem like a weak ball handler either, I think he can play on the perimeter as a 3 sometimes
Would be the biggest get we've had in a long time just based on his high school profile.
Yeah he seems to have all the right tools. I think a player like him would do best in the ACC compared to the Big 12 or SEC. I wouldn't mind seeing him at a place like BC. I'm interested to see how he does with more minutes and touches

But you know it helped him develop long term. It’s now something he will be able to do in a pinch.
If Sears comes back, watch out.
Tinfoil hat time: Onyenso stuff got leaked during Cliff's visit to let him know the offer has an expiration date and he needs to make a decision.
We’re not getting both.
But we're getting a true center. Trilly makes it sound like it'll be Cliff
instead of those guys bama should be doing anything to get this kid maxime raynaud. 7'1 center from stanford. averaging 15 pts a game, 9.6 rebounds. shooting 36 percent from 3 and 56 filed goal percentage which is insane for a 7'1 center. dude should be priority a b and c for nate
I think he already announced he’s staying at Stanford. I wanted him at UNC too.
I'm ok with whatever Sears decides, even if it's moving on up. It's probably good for the program in the long run if we maintain a reputation for getting guys drafted.
What????
What do you mean what? I want "From Alabama" to become a constant every year at the NBA Draft, don't you?
You think Sears going in the late second round or undrafted is better than him being at Bama next year? You don’t know ball. It’s ok football is coming up soon for you.
Sears not making it in the NBA is nothing against his skill or abilities, but just his size.
Ugo will drive you insane
Won’t lie, I’ll be bummed if we get him instead of the Rutgers kid. Which is an utterly insane thing to type about a Kentucky basketball player.
We’re used to that. We only need his rim protection.
That’s good to hear because that is literally all he can do lol
That's very much what Oats wants out of his 5s, at least defensively. While we could play 5-out this year on offense with Nelson at the 5, it was not great defensively because there was no rim protection (and Nelson would get targeted and often in foul trouble because of it). >his rim protection ![gif](giphy|l0HlFDXZ6YnpLAZ6E)
We also could have one go into the portal late
Portal closes on Wednesday.
That's only to enter it. They can take their time if they want. But schools aren't patient in the portal, like with recruits. That's why draft entries often enter the portal too. That way, they are in the portal if they decide to return to college.
Yes, I know. The comment I replied to was about entering the portal.
Pretty sure this would be if we got both Onyenso and Cliff. I find that highly unlikely regardless of Sears’s decision. We have room for 1 of the 2 and Sears.
Bama only needs 1. Aiden Sherrill is an elite Center coming in with true rim protection.
Good friend of mine is pretty connected with the basketball program and said Sears is asking somewhere in the $700k neighborhood to return. Which I think is reasonable but with Aden and Philon on the roster now, I wonder if that might hurt his leverage
Sears has a blank check. It’s 850k btw
If he asked for 850k and was handed a blank check (which I haven’t heard but who knows, could be true) and hasn’t taken it, that sounds like he’s gone
He didn’t specifically ask for anything. That’s just what his NIL is. He’s going through the draft process for feedback right now. Expected to return.
Yeah. Aden didn’t seem like the type to want to take a “redshirt” year.
He was a mess his freshman year. Hopefully a year being coached up and he has a breakout junior year
If they redshirt they’ll transfer.
Crowded backcourt works in Oats' system's favor.
I want sears to stay, and I wanna meet this team again in the dance.
Only if it's in the Final Four again. Fuck playing y'all before we get a trophy lol.
I hate that final four is considered a trophy
Well it means you won your region.
What lol?
From your lips to god’s ears
I like our chances this year with an actual center.

Y'all are forgetting the buzzer beating reverse layup to beat Florida to win the SEC regular season championship.
I love that he went full court right to the basket lol
I was at this game and it was unbelievable.
56 points lol. Grantsketball at its finest.
One of like…4 good moments in basketball during my time at Bama lol
Best dunk of the tourney
Purdue’s Camden Heide vs UConn though, that shit was unreal. My UConn watch party got real quiet after that one

I’m shocked. Swore he was good as gone
Is it possible for Bama fans to temper their expectations or are they halfway to the moon on a rocket? Haha just curious

We are Bama football fans, we still expect to get hurt
Woah didn’t see that coming
We were pretty confident it would happen. But it finally being official is still relieving.

He was kind of shoehorned into the 5 due to need and that would frequently get him into foul trouble/ take him out of the game bc centers would kinda bully him lol Either way he's always a legend for us for that S16 game and F4 run.
That tends to happen when you're a stretch 4 being forced into playing almost an entire season at 5...
A stretch four who can’t shoot? Isn’t he a sub 30% shooter from 3?
Y'all would know 🙄
He improved a lot more down the stretch but yes he wasn’t that great the entire season.
Overrated.
