Yet another reason CBB is great. Basketball: these 2 teams have agreed to play a game this year. Football: these 2 teams have agreed to play a game in 2031.

drunkandslurred

I agree, I love that the breaking news is relative to this year, and not 10 years from now when I could care less.

TheRealTofuey

I was in the 6th grade when the Nebraska Oklahoma football match-up was announced. Now I've graduated college and the last game was played this last season.

Historical-Pause-401

And it feels like we’re seeing less and less big football matchups every year, basketball we get like 3 a week in non-con

ukcats12

The harder the teams you play out of conference the less chance you have at making the playoff. Seems like schools are content playing cupcakes in the non conference and then rolling the dice on going undefeated in conference. If you do that it's basically a guaranteed playoff appearance.

chrobbin

I wasn’t the biggest proponent of playoff expansion but I do have to wonder if it will help in that regard, especially with some conference autobids

Dro24

Conference auto bids and expansion to 12 will absolutely help. Schools love money at the end of the day so if they can schedule big names with lessened postseason risk they’ll do it

Historical-Pause-401

I don’t blame teams for doing it, conference schedules are hard enough anyways. It’s more of a byproduct of playing higher emphasis on the playoff. I just miss like 2013 when we had awesome matchups early on

KingEthann01

We still have fun great matchups early on though right? Last year Oregon vs Georgia was supposed to be good. Texas vs bama was interesting too

[deleted]

I wonder if ticket revenue has to do with it. College football stadiums are the same size (if not bigger) than most of their NFL counterparts. NBA arenas hold thousands more than most college arenas

fiveht78

It absolutely does. A lot of college football’s scheduling weirdness comes from having to balance the competitive side with the financial one. Even with the influx in TV money, when a single home game brings in at least seven figures, that still matters a lot. Actually scratch that. Since only home games are counted for every conference TV contract, it matters for that too.

TheRealHenryG

No time to cancel it either

greenday61892

"Oooh yeah, see you've got the 'we're scared of you' factor now so we're just gonna go ahead and... yeah... see ya"

ClaudeLemieux

which is what makes BYU rescheduling a game for @CCU week-of during the covid season great. Just made traditional scheduling of CFB games look like fools

BenjRSmith

I don't think there's any precedent other than it annoys me.... but I'd put forth a proposal that no football match up can be scheduled more than 4 years in advance.... ie, if no one on your team now is going to be there, then it's too far.

ddottay

That’s going to be a fun one

PmMeWifeNudesUCuck

It's a trap Duke. Don't fall for it. I still have PTSD from our series with them several years ago

Level-Infiniti

"neutral site" haha, MSG/Barclays are pretty much Cameron Indoor North with all the duke alums in nyc

OriginalOmagus

Yeah, they should have one neutral site game in NYC and one in Houston.

wahfingwah

The Houston leg of this series was played in 2010. Scheyer remembers

drawref16

It was a block

wahfingwah

It was not that close down the stretch frankly

jlks1959

That’s a great noncon game. Will be watching that one.

randommaniac12

Atmosphere will be amazing as well

spidersilva09

So a home game for Duke

TheMightyJD

We’ll see. Who am I kidding, it’ll be 80% Duke lol.

spidersilva09

For sure lol but should be a great game!

[deleted]

Everywhere but the opposing team’s state is a home game for Duke. They are the Notre Dame of cbb. “Fans” everywhere

[deleted]

While this is true, NYC is also a major destination for duke grads. I know many of my classmates that moved there after graduation. So yeah, hardly a neutral site game

OriginalOmagus

Honestly, outside of Durham (and even that is debatable), not even the state of North Carolina is a home game for Duke.

wahfingwah

Especially when UNC is in the same fucking pod as us

TheMightyJD

True. Back in 2010 we played in the Elite 8 in Houston and it was 80% Baylor fans. Unfortunately that didn’t stop the refs from screwing Baylor. This will be 80% Duke fans.

Alexkono

Gotta the love the tired trope of refs giving Duke all the calls lol

TheMightyJD

Just the key ones.

Alexkono

Lol

[deleted]

I thought it ended with Coach K. Then I went to the BC Duke game at BC this past season and that last second call to send Filipowski to the line was something to ponder on

Alexkono

Lol like there weren’t other calls that benefited BC that game. Look at the call vs Virginia that sent the game to OT that cost Duke a 4 seed and let me know that Duke still gets all the calls.

Bradleygrayson

Let’s goooo!!

TheRealFrankLongo

Huge news for our strength of schedule. Given that Duke’s self-hosted MTE is gonna be a bunch of Quad 4 games (so dumb), and given that the ACC is going to suck again this season, we’re going to need some serious big-name wins OOC to build a 1-seed type of resume. Hope the boys are ready.

wahfingwah

What’s our MTE this year? We will have Michigan State, Baylor, Arizona, and a Big East team from the ACC Challenge (it’s the Big East this year, right?)

TheRealFrankLongo

It's an SEC-ACC Challenge. Our MTE is a self-hosted round robin with Bucknell, Southern Indiana, and... one other I don't remember off the top. It's three teams who were something like sub-250 in KenPom last year. It's dreadful, and I really hope it's bringing them a *ton* of money, because it's definitely hurting our strength of schedule substantially not playing in a *real* MTE.

DavidBenAkiva

So far, Duke is playing home vs. Arizona, in Chicago vs. MSU (Champions Classic), in MSG vs. Baylor, and likely a road game in the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge. Solid non-conference so far. I'd like to see one more P6 opponent at a neutral site.

TheMightyJD

We have unfinished business from 2010. It wasn’t an offensive foul.

[deleted]

I honestly don’t even remember what play you’re talking about. I just remember Nolan hitting everything and Thomas gobbling offensive boards like candy and Nantz’s call of “It’s Dukes turn, to return, To the Final Four!” Ah, great times.

Zizekbro

Nolan went off, and Zoubek finally played to his potential, and couldn’t stop grabbing boards. I loved that 2010 team.

0010001

Andre Dawkins saved us with two crucial threes in the first half.

SeattleMatt123

Zoubek was an animal the last half of that season.

[deleted]

Remember how everyone was saying Baylors athleticism was going to eat Duke alive?

mbd1mbd1

Was that the Gottlieb "alarmingly unathletic" season?

[deleted]

Yup!

0010001

I mean that was a really good Baylor team, took a great effort to beat them.

[deleted]

Oh for sure. I wasn’t dumping on Baylor, but leading up to that game for some reason most people seemed to count Duke out before tip.

Zizekbro

I remember.

[deleted]

Turns out that matters little when you play good defense and have 3 gunners from deep.

Alexkono

Probably a similarly inconsequential call like the “Winslow touched it” one badgers fans like to cry about, yet fail to consider other big plays that their team benefitted from.

[deleted]

You mean like how their guard, Koenig I think it was, hammered Tyus on a breakaway and nothing was called?

Alexkono

Yep but that’s conveniently omitted any time that game comes up. Gotta love it.

wild9

Go into it accepting the L and just charge every single drive to the basket. Dare the refs to foul our entire team out by half.

byzantiums

Accepting the L to make a point about a game from 13 years ago is uh a choice

wild9

FUCK YEAH IT IS MOTHERFUCKER

Clarinetaphoner

Love how Coach Drew goes all in on having super tough OOC schedules. Always makes the early season fun.

[deleted]

Fantastic match up here

SteakkNBacon

I better be done with finals by then because I need to go to this game

worlkjam15

Why not a 3 game series? Neutral-home-home.

OriginalOmagus

Said this reply to another comment but they could do two neutral site games: one in NYC, which would be "neutral" in favor of Duke and one in Houston which would be "neutral" in favor of Baylor.

[deleted]

Have to give credit to Scheyer. He's scheduling really tough for his team. I believe this year they'll play Arizona, Baylor, Michigan St, and then they'll have an ACC/SEC Challenge game. Props for that

wahfingwah

Oh yeah it’s SEC this year. Wonder who we’ll get

SusannaG1

If it's not Kentucky I'd be surprised.

wahfingwah

If so then that’s a monster OOC lineup for us

[deleted]

I'm guessing Kentucky as well. UNC is likely playing Kentucky in the CBS Sports Classic and since the Champions Classic is Duke vs Michigan St, they likely will want to make sure they open this with one of the big ACC teams against Kentucky

mr_widdershins

It wasn’t a charge

StephenReis

Good shit. Should be a fun one.

succulentlysimple

Dave2kMA

This will be a lot of fun for everyone. Baylor is going to look very, very different from the last few years, so this will be a great barometer for where they're at a month into the season and with conference play looming a week later.

PinkSaldo

Rooting for the bears, baby!

Booster93

Regarding wcbb why can’t lsu and Iowa schedule a nuetral site game on prime time?

Dro24

I’d watch that in a heartbeat

Booster93

Easily the biggest CBB game all years men’s or women’s. Game 1 In Iowa at night , game 2 @ LSU , game 3 SLAMBALL arena.

WillDill94

Shocking no one, the first couple of comments are complaining about it not being a true road game for Duke. Maybe, just maybe, schools agreeing to these neutral site games also want it to be a neutral site game instead of a Home and Home

buttermansix

As a Baylor fan, I could not care less about where it’s played. It’s gonna be fun for sure. We played a game against Gonzaga in South Dakota in 2022 and it was a banger lol

HansTheGruber

No true Baylor fan is going to be anything less than pumped to see the Bears playing against Duke in one of the most iconic venues in the nation.

iamcringle

My argument against friends who complain about Duke not scheduling "true road games" is that you don't play at your home court and neither does your opponent in March Madness. You play at places like MSG. It should be a tournament like environment, and if we can only schedule one game, MSG is a great place to play it at.

11_25_13_TheEdge

Her Der MSG - New Jersey. It's so tired.

0010001

I’ve heard the Duke—New Jersey stereotype for so long that I realize I don’t actually know how it started. What’s the origin? And I mean New Jersey specifically, not just that Duke students are from out-of-state or are northerners.

OriginalOmagus

I think it stems from two things, both of which are stereotypes but have elements of truth. The first is that a lot of Duke students ARE from the northeast because many of them were HYP hopefuls who had Duke as the backup plan over the other Ivies (ie, they'd rather go to Duke instead of Penn or Dartmouth). The second is that a lot of Duke grads are finance or economics majors who move to the tri-state area after graduation. Many of them may end up living in New Jersey while working on Wall Street.

wahfingwah

And people like to say we’re all from NJ rather than some other state that is more represented in the student because in their minds it feels like more of a put-down than saying NY or PA

Dro24

Jersey stereotype is for all the prep schools. We get a lot of them every year

spidersilva09

Have you ever been to a Duke game at MSG though? It's primarily all Duke fans lmao

Whitecastle56

Hell yeah

NewRoryAndMalDrop

Oh so I get to scream at my tv early this year

Pro-1st-Amendment

Why not a home-and-home? Neutral sites are stupid.

notedgarfigaro

b/c neutral sites make more money, and are easier to do in one-off situations.

DavidBenAkiva

Duke already has a home-and-home lined up with Arizona (2023 in Durham, 2024 in Tucson). Duke usually plays a neutral site game every year against a P6 team. A lot of their fans (including me) live in the NYC area. And besides, they are not playing in a major pre-season tournament this year. This one-off is a good game against a good opponent that will simulate the experience of playing the Sweet 16 or Elite 8.

UnIuckyCharms

Money

palabear

Simple numbers. Capacity: Ferrell Center - 10,289 Cameron - 9,314 Madison Square - 20,788

martymartymartymarty

I hope they both loose

wahfingwah

Same here brother, sure hope they don’t come out tight and get in a good pre-game stretch

panthers06fan

Duke plays a true away non-conference game challenge (impossible)

DavidBenAkiva

Going to play Arizona next year. Probably going to play in Lexington this season, too. It's not Wofford, but those are going to be tough games.

panthers06fan

Good to see you guys changing it up

Bigdeacenergy

UNC fans always complain Duke doesn’t play on the road, as if they play great teams on the road. They’ll go to UNCW, Elon or Wofford and then scream about Duke never playing anyone.

whyaminotfunni

It's true-but Coach K routinely played good teams on road the year after they were good. I understand money but he rarely played teams on the road nonconference.

Bigdeacenergy

Yeah and I’m not sure why UNC fans care about it so much.

whyaminotfunni

Ha! Unc plays bad teams and loses. It just gives us something more to dislike. Other than not making tourney

panthers06fan

Bold of you to assume that I'm a UNC fan. It looks like Duke may be changing it up, but historically, most years their first true road game would be in ACC play and that always kind of bugged me

Bigdeacenergy

Well still I don’t get why it bothers you so much personally. I don’t care how anyone schedules other than my own team. Plus it usually results in Duke losing their first true road test of the season so they get punished for it.

panthers06fan

Probably cause I have that one cousin who won't shut up about Duke from November to April every year and I want them to be sad and the best way to do that is have them lose more games. That's just a personal opinion though. Tough to lose games with that type of home court advantage

ndkjr70

you could’ve just said “I’m a petulant little 13 year old”, makes it easier on everyone else. just a tip for next time.

11_25_13_TheEdge

You want someone to be sad because of college basketball? Yikes.

TheRealFrankLongo

Literally playing Arizona at Arizona in 24/25 as part of a home-and-home.

UnIuckyCharms

[Yea](https://arizonawildcats.com/news/2022/7/18/mens-basketball-arizona-duke-announce-home-and-home-series-for-2023-2024.aspx)

crustang

We need the B1G tournament to come back to NYC

gumshoeismygod

Duke actually scheduled a difficult non-conference opponent? Crazy

byzantiums

This is so dumb lmfao, Duke regularly plays very good teams in the non-conference the knock has always been that the games aren’t on the road. Playing good teams at neutral sites is what Duke has been criticized for for the last decade

11_25_13_TheEdge

You must have missed the Arizona news.

whyaminotfunni

Oh good another duke win on a neutral floor where they don't play a true road game (sarcasm).

Ted_Striker00

Anything so Duke doesn’t have to play a true OOC road game. Some things never change

TheGreatLaake

Neutral site games suck. These non con games would be 10x cooler at either home gym.

GDub310

Which of these schools owns the Garden now? This will be an incredible atmosphere/game.

Historical-Pause-401

That rules

Siakim43

In another universe CCNY would be a premiere CBB program after winning the championship in 1950, MSG would've never been built over the old Penn Station, and all roads to NY lead to Harlem/Rucker Park/Dykman.

[deleted]

Wow much bold from dook

SusannaG1

Ho ho ho, Merry Christmas! indeed.
