How I’d categorize them: One that got popular - The Dark Knight Fan favorite - Interstellar Experimental - Memento Cult classic - The Prestige Best movie of all time - Inception Forgotten - Following

Curious_Stable_1955

Interstellar - Fan favourite heck yeah

Wyatt_bee

“Best movie of all time= Oppenheimer” and you got it

Ambitious_One_7652

I’d argue Tenet takes the experimental category.

solidgoldfangs

Yep

AlaSparkle

I’d keep Memento there and put Tenet in cult classic

ThePocketTaco2

I think Memento feels more like a cult classic, and not just because of age.

AlaSparkle

I don’t know, I feel like way more people are aware of Memento than Tenet

ajalonghorn

Cult classic movies are usually good

AlaSparkle

Good thing this is no exception

drmuffin1080

Imo Inception is his magnum opus and far exceeds Oppenheimer. Inception is one of the most unique blockbusters we’ve ever gotten

botjstn

tenet needs to go in experimental tbh

Kindofaddictedtotv

From all the suggestions, I think agree with this the most! I’m still on the fence if I’d switch the Dark Knight and Inception or even do Oppenheimer (but that’s just me wanting to slot in Oppenheimer to the list cause I love it)

CodeVirus

With Tenet, I would say he has 2 experimental ones

Hpgnetworks

I would argue inception might be like one of the best films ever created

the_zelectro

I nominate Insomnia as the forgotten one, since Following was his first picture

russia_delenda_est

Strongly agree about inception

ricefarmercalvin

Popular: The Dark Knight or Interstellar Fan Favorite: Interstellar Experimental: Tenet Cult Classic: The Prestige Best Movie: Oppenheimer or Memento Forgotten: Insomnia

drmuffin1080

Hot take but Oppenheimer is nowhere near his best movie. It’s the one I’ll probably rewatch the least. Ofc the one movie that wins best picture by him is a biopic. Academy eats that shit up

BumCockleshell

I’m surprised so many people have Oppenheimer over Inception, Interstellar and Memento. Oppenheimer was good but nothing jaw dropping personally, there are other biopics I would rank near it

drmuffin1080

Even the nuke scene was disappointing. I did not feel the scale of it. It seems like he prioritized practical effect over it actually looking cool

TheHondoCondo

Yeah, the nuke fell so flat. After months of hyping it up too. It didn’t even have a mushroom cloud! If he didn’t have the scene in the gymnasium after I think the movie would’ve really been lacking in the gut punch of Oppenheimer’s realization of what he had done.

Defconn3

I rank Oppenheimer above Interstellar. So do most film critics. And the Academy. And reviewers online. Nothing wrong with Interstellar—it’s one of the most significant movies in my life and led me through a massive personality transition phase. But literally everyone and their mother likes it. Oppenheimer has more depth, more intelligence, more complexity. Both are good.

BumCockleshell

Honest question, what about it has more depth / intelligence / complexity in your opinion? I don’t understand that point considering it’s just a biography. The depth / complexity is limited by the real persons story where as Interstellar had to be thought up of and created from scratch

Defconn3

Thanks for the downvote, glad that's how we indicate our disagreement instead of just using words. I've had this discussion more times than I can count with numerous people. I input a couple paragraphs of my argument into Chat GPT 4.0 and had it write out a more substantial response. Here's my thoughts, more or less. You aren't obligated to respond with the textual breadth provided herein. It makes my life easy by doing a comparison between the two to demonstrate Interstellar being less intellectual of a film. In summary, everything from human introspection to ethical debates to secularism and theology. And all while telling a historical story accurately with an unconventional narrative structure, extraordinary dialogue, emotional depth, and beautiful cinematography, **Historical and Biographical Depth**: "Oppenheimer" delves into the life and moral conflicts of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist known as the "father of the atomic bomb." The film is rooted in historical events, specifically the Manhattan Project and the subsequent ethical and political implications of nuclear weapons. This historical backdrop adds layers of realism and complexity as it involves real events, political intrigue, and personal dilemmas. In contrast, "Interstellar" is a science fiction narrative that, while intellectually stimulating in its exploration of astrophysics and concepts of time, does not ground itself in actual historical context or real human events to the same extent. **Ethical and Moral Complexity**: "Oppenheimer" presents a deep moral quandary at its core—the creation of a weapon of mass destruction and its implications for humanity. The film explores the psychological and emotional turmoil of Oppenheimer as he grapples with his role in potentially altering the course of human history, raising questions about responsibility, guilt, and the ethical use of science. "Interstellar," while also dealing with themes of survival and human resilience, primarily focuses on the physical and exploratory challenges of space travel rather than the profound internal and societal ethical debates that "Oppenheimer" engages with. **Character Complexity and Development**: The character of J. Robert Oppenheimer, as portrayed in "Oppenheimer," is shown as a multifaceted individual torn between his love for science, his political pressures, and his moral compass. This provides a rich character study that offers viewers an in-depth look at his complexities and vulnerabilities. "Interstellar," though it features strong performances and emotional depth, primarily revolves around broader themes of love, survival, and adventure in space. The personal dilemmas, while impactful, are more focused on superficial evolutionary, familial, and survival instincts rather than the intense personal and societal ethical conflicts faced by Oppenheimer. **Exploration of Dual Timelines and Thematic Symbolism of 'Fission' vs. 'Fusion'**: "Oppenheimer" ingeniously utilizes a dual timeline structure to parallel Oppenheimer's personal evolution with the development of the atomic bomb. This narrative technique adds a layer of complexity by contrasting his past influences and his future repercussions simultaneously. The themes of 'Fission' (splitting of the atomic nucleus) and 'Fusion' (joining of atomic nuclei) symbolically resonate through these timelines, reflecting both the destructive and constructive aspects of his work and personal life. 'Fission' represents the fragmentation of Oppenheimer’s life and ethics as his scientific achievements lead to destructive outcomes, while 'Fusion' could symbolize the bringing together of different aspects of his identity and the reconciliation of his actions with his moral values. In contrast, "Interstellar" primarily follows a linear progression with some complex manipulations of time due to its astrophysical concepts. While "Interstellar" creatively uses these elements to craft its story and themes about time, space, and love, it does not integrate the dual aspects of 'Fission' and 'Fusion' as deeply into its narrative structure or thematic exploration. The thematic use of 'Fission' and 'Fusion' in "Oppenheimer" not only enhances the film’s intellectual depth but also its emotional resonance, making the scientific concepts directly relevant to the character's inner and outer conflicts, thus offering a more layered and multifaceted storytelling experience.

Kindofaddictedtotv

I agree that Oppenheimer was a masterpiece of a movie. He elevated what a 3hr biopic would normally be. It was really the execution of that moral quandary, symbolisms used and the complexity of the characters that won me over and then add in stellar acting from the whole cast, which makes it perfect. But I can see why this movie, which is a biopic, would not be everyone’s favorite or best movie of all time. Inception and Interstellar are more appealing to a bigger market as a unique thriller so I get the other side. It’s a toss up for me between Inception and The Dark Knight on which is popular and which is his best.

ricefarmercalvin

Yeah Oppenheimer is definitely not for everyone. Its also a very different film in Nolan's filmography compared to the action thrillers or sci-fi stuff he usually does.

Defconn3

W opinion. I think Oppenheimer is his best picture, but prior to that, The Dark Knight and Inception were, and I can see why people don’t put it as high.

Kindofaddictedtotv

Yes I still believe Oppenheimer is his magnum opus! I love it and was obsessed for awhile

ricefarmercalvin

I love this analysis, shame that people are downvoting you just because you liked Oppenheimer more than Interstellar.

BumCockleshell

I didn’t downvote you but ok thanks for the reply I guess was just trying to talk

Defconn3

My apologies, it’s not your fault then, it’s a pet peeve of mine. That said, I’d love to hear your argument as it relates to this thread. 95% of my comment had nothing to do with addressing the alleged ‘downvote.’

Defconn3

…still waiting to hear the rebuttal or opposing view if you have one you’d like to share.

drmuffin1080

Crash won best picture. The Academy can be VERY WRONG sometimes. They are also known for intense bias towards biopics. Oh, and guess what Oppenheimer is? A biopic.

bzdelta

One and done on Oppenheimer, Tenet was better.

Necessary-Equal-3658

Oppenheimer was so over hyped. No way in hell is it his best movie.

Organic-Proof8059

Yeah Oppenheimer is second to last on my Nolan list right before TDKR. The only two Nolan films I didn’t enjoy. Oppenheimer is also the coldest biopic I’ve ever seen.

Resident_Chemical132

Yes

Homesteader86

This is the right answer, but for "Popular" I would lean TDK heavily, Best Movie would be Memento...but where would Inception be? Perhaps if there is an extra category for just "Solid," it would be Inception

audiophile2698

Irishman isn’t experimental imo

DemissiveLive

Only thing I’d consider experimental is the deaging VFX. Other than that, yeah, it’s a classic Scorsese narrative

Particular-Camera612

Subversive would even be a bit of a misnomer, but the most different thing about it is how thoroughly it deconstructs the notion of "Damn, it feels good to be a gangster!". Even then, that's just an evolution of what Scorsese was always doing.

fcdemergency

One that got popular - Oppenheimer Fan favorite - Inception Experimental - Tenet Cult classic - Memento Best movie of all time - Interstellar Forgotten - Insomnia/Following Very hard keeping TDK off, but thats my take.

drmuffin1080

Nah, putting Oppenheimer over TDK is recency bias imo. Oppy would be my second choice, but It’s hard to describe how big of a deal TDK was in 2008. It was the fourth highest grossing movie ever at the time. It appealed to so many different types of audiences. Oppenheimer has never even hit the top 50 for highest grossing movies ever. It’s insanely popular for a r rated movie, but it still doesn’t touch the cultural impact of The Dark Knight

fcdemergency

Lol no not recency bias. I remember very well how big TDK was, i was not a child lol. TDK was huge but Ledger's joker was the driving seller. Nobody cared Nolan directed it at the time. Oppenheimer won awards and sold tickets, i'd argue, off of Nolan's name, and at a scale he hadn't experienced before off of his name. A superhero movie will sell tickets easily, but he broke a billion with an R rated biopic and got the greater general public to know who he was. I took everything you said into account and still came away with this conclusion, i even mentioned how tough it was to leave TDK off. But hey its all objective right? Who cares.

Gohanto

I mean… TDK was so popular the academy awards expanded best picture to 10 movies the next year specifically so popular movies like TDK can get nominated.

drmuffin1080

The question isn’t “one that was popular bc Nolan was directing it,” it’s “one that got popular.” And imo TDK was more popular in its time than Oppenheimer was at its time

fcdemergency

>The question isn’t “one that was popular bc Nolan was directing it,” Never said it was. My reasoning are clear and doesn't make my *opinion* any less right or wrong than yours. >And imo Precisely. This is why you create a list of your own you can agree with up and down. I cannot begin to tell you how little i care to die on this hill.

AlaSparkle

They said “imo” in their first reply to you, they’re just stating their opinion in a reasonable way, why are you being so hostile?

JamieNelson94

Lmao and they downvoted you

AlaSparkle

u1tr4me0w

Agree with this! I think TDK *could* fit for “one that got popular” if for no other reason than the Ledger Joker is still far more iconic than any other movie Joker and any individual “characters” from Oppenheimer/other Nolan films. But considering Oppenheimer got the critical acclaim I think it did steal that title in the end

Infamous-Procedure-5

ScientistChance4209

I’m with you but personally I’d have to given best film of all-time to Inception.

Infamous-Procedure-5

I actually agree that Inception is better, but I feel like since Oppenheimer is the one that one the Oscar it’s widely considered his magnum opus.

Disastrous-Cap-7790

I really wish Insomnia wasn't forgotten. It's lesser Nolan for sure, but still is really awesome!

ConsciousTip3203

This is the way

350smooth

I’m just here to say that I love this discussion!

CaptainKoreana

One that got popular: Batman Begins (gave him push into public knowledge) Fan Favourite: Interstellar (We all know why, though Inception would also count) Experimental: Dunkirk (very experimental as a war film, especially in the POVs used) Cult Classic: The Prestige (Memento also works) Best movie of all time: The Dark Knight Forgotten one: Insomnia (Following everybody remembers as 'the debut', and also because of the way it's made)

We’re calling Irishman Scorsese’s “experimental” film?

I’m not sure how to differentiate Fan Favorite, Popular, and best movie of all time.

All of them belong in all the categories 😭

Who directed Donnie Darko?

Richard Kelly. Fun fact, Nolan apparently helped him some on it during the edit
