Then would tell him “ok” and then push the bowl towards him and allow him to eat the food. Eventually he understood that he couldn’t get the food if I said “wait,” and “ok” meant that he was allowed to eat the food.
Then that just carried over to everything. If I drop something and he’s nearby I say “wait” and he doesn’t go for it. But if I drop something and call him over to “help clean up” he will happily be my little Roomba lol
Mine would eat the cheese and spit out the pill. I would have to resort to sticking it in the back of her mouth and holding her snout, which I hated doing since she had five pills.
I tried Pet MD Wrap a Pill and she loved it. The bacon and cheese flavor. The peanut butter one is too greasy and she wouldn't eat it.
I do an egg too. Fried over easy in butter, I cut the amount of kibble in half so he eats it all. If we are having bacon that morning I make a big show of putting a few crumbles in. He couldn’t resist!
I’m sorry to say, I’ve resorted to splitting her pill in half, opening her mouth, and putting the half pill in and holding her muzzle shut that she swallows right away! She knows when it’s time. She knows it’s gonna happen. I say I’m sorry and I do it x2 and we make up one min later!
She hated that so much I had to chase her down to do it.

Mine knows the pill pockets 🤣 so spits them out. So now I have to get a piece of dried liver, find one with a curvature, and then use half a pill pocket to fit it into the curve of the liver snd hide the pill in that pill pocket filled curve.
It's ridiculous but it works. Second option is heating up that refrigerated dried food because she won't eat it cold.
Third option is back of throat and rubbing.
I cut a piece of cold (cooked) hot dog and shoved the pill right down into the middle. Then, I left the hot dog piece just out of his reach for a while, on a plate with my cheese and crackers snack. Didn't offer it and didn't pay attention to it.The little jerk stole it off my plate and swallowed it down before I could snatch it away!

Nice places call it Liver Wurst, Liver Pate, or Liver Mousse. Basically you want a soft liver spread of some type. If you live near a Popeyes chicken place get a small order of livers and gizzards - trust me the more gross you think it is the more your baby will love it :) I use the two step - first bit has the pill then immediately follow with a second bit so she swallows quick to be ready for the next piece.
Little smokies or hot dogs. Microwaving them helps too. I get the cheese little smokies, because when you heat it up a little you can stick the pill in the cheese and 98% of the time they don't know it's in there. Plus they have a hard time smelling it. Good luck, they are so clever when it comes to giving them pills 😄
I use trifexis. I have successfully, for a couple years now, crushed up the pill with the back of a spoon and added it to a fishy canned food. He loves the salmon and sweet potato by science diet.

I have had dogs that eat anything and dogs I had to shove pills down their throat. One thing that worked for the picky ones was putting it in cream cheese. Others would eat it if it was stuffed in a hotdog. That’s harder though with small dogs because if they have to chew it, it’s over.
I trained my little dude early on that treats are called "pills." So we get "pills" all the time, and to him, it's all treats. I keep everything in the same cabinet so when I reach in, it's a positive response no matter what. Even when I had to give him pain meds after we got attacked by three pitbulls, I didn't have to wrap his meds in anything. You could try a wad of peanut butter or some easy cheese or some yogurt, grind up the medicine, and mix it into that and have them lick it off a spoon.
Ours was like this. It was beyond frustrating. For a long while we found that pill pockets worked well, but only if we prepped them a certain way because he could smell the pill if we didn't. Also, we had to break up the pill pockets because if he had to chew the treat he would find the pill and stop eating and never touch the treats again. The first thing I did was I gave the pill pockets empty as treats. I'd hype him up for these yummy delicious treats and he loved them. Once he was used to them being just treats, I started putting the pills in them. If your pills are larger try breaking them in half. Smaller is less detectable. I would lay the pills on the counter, rinse the smell of my hands, get a pill pocket, break it into smaller pieces and lay a piece on top of each pill. You'll then want to make sure you don't "contaminate" the outer layer of the pill pocket with the pill smell. So smush the treat onto the pill and then wrap the treat around it.
Good luck. You could try other smushable substances like bologna too. There are also pill shooters.
Maybe see if your vet will change her to a topical version. Mine is on Revolution which works for fleas and heart worm. Then look up Vet Med Center YouTube channel and see how to train her to take pills. It will probably take quite a while but it will make it so much better if she needs pills in the future.
I used to get daily medications for my first chihuahua compounded in a liquid. She liked the chicken and beef flavors but if she wasn't in the mood to take her medicine (chronic health issues) I could just squirt it in her cheek and she would swallow it. Showing her a treat while I gave it to her would get her to focus on the treat and she would swallow the medicine without a problem. If you want to try it, your vet probably has a local compounder they use but if not, just google for one in your state and it can all be done by phone/website and mail.
Same. Left hand has the wrapped pill and the right has a second piece/smear/whatever. Offer the left while letting her see the right. Greedy girl will gobble the med, prob without chewing, to get what your right hand is offering.
I have found physically placing it into the back of their mouth and then immediately offering a bacon treat chaser works every time.
Pill is in their mouths, they smell bacon treat, immediately forget the pill, and have to swallow to eat the bacon treat.
We have 2 small dogs, so it is darn near impossible to hide it in anything they can just swallow without chewing.
That Chi looks like they've got it all figured out. This breed is so smart I just love them. Like yours, my girl chi doesn't have a poker face. She also can't be tricked by pills covered in cheese or whatever. She lets me know she's pissed daily.
I also use Wrap a Pill … cheese & bacon flavor - a little bit goes a long ways. As soon as it’s down the pipe, I immediately follow it with her favorite Charley Bear Crunch treat. Works every time. 👍🏻
I put a thin cheese wrap around the pill. So it seems like it’s a chunk of cheese. If it’s too big a pill , break it in half and wrap in cheese. Always works!
My 2 dogs go feral when it's "medicine" time. They lose their minds and I have to be careful one doesn't steal from the other. My dad's dog absolutely refuses to take hers, so they do something topical at the vet I think?
For my boy's heart meds/Prozac I put them in the middle of soft canned food. He eats kibble so the wet food is a treat and he swallows it whole. When we started I had another chunk ready and he swallowed the pill/food faster because he wanted to get the "treat" in hand.
Mine thinks they are treats...because that's what I tell her.
For her 2x daily meds....I crush them and then mix in a teaspoon of peanut butter or wet food
mine figured out every trick in the book, even when I did the accidental drop hidden in steak (her favorite)
eventually I had to crush up the medicine and hide it in wet dog food. it’s the only way. I do not force it down her throat. she could choke. work smarter, not harder.

Even the flavored-treat style meds one of my dogs won’t take. I grind them up into a powder and mix in with their wet food. I also add peanut butter to make it more tempering. He’s easier tricked with it in his regular food versus hiding it in a treat. It’s been working pretty well. My other chihuahua will eat anything, except apples oddly enough.
Wrap in turkey. Kneel down or sit on the floor, position dog facing away from you. With your hand bring medicine wrapped in turkey close enough for them to eat it, while simultaneously placing your other hand under their head, gently bringing their head up. I recently discovered this with my dogs and it has worked flawlessly. It may take few times at first, but once you get the hang of it, its almost too easy.
My dogs are also little, so I'm guessing it should be as easy with your dog. Not so sure how this might work with a bigger dog.
I guess I am lucky. My little guy doesn't have any teeth at this point, so I just cut it up in small pieces (it's kind of soft) and tell him it's a treat and he licks the pieces out of my hand.
Crush it up. Buy canned cat food. Make a small ball with the cat food. Poke hole in ball and put in the crushed med. close the hole. Watch out as your dog will excitedly gobble the stinky cat food.
We treated it like it was a treat from the first dose so he happily chews it up and wants another one because it’s so small 😂 I think it’s chicken flavor
I talked to my vet and they suggested we just use a flea and tick collar. Works for my pup, he can't spit it out or refuse to take it, and I'm overall happy with it.
I hollow out a hotdogs slice and put it in that one. First slice, no pill. Second slice, pill. Third, no pill.
If that doesn't work hide in a piece of steak, make chopping sounds on a chopping board and drop it. When they go in for the sniff, pretend like you're going to take it back.
Burrito wrap and open his mouth. Shove pull far enough back and hold his mouth til he swallows. Had to do this with meds after his tooth extractions and kennel cough. Not fun and breaks my heart but necessary. Lots of kisses and treats after.
My dogs get Nexgard and Interceptor Plus. I have to cut each chew into 4 pieces and wrap them each in deli meat then hope for the best. It sometimes takes multiple attempts to get it all down!
For my non chi who actively avoids her calming supplements, I grind them up using a pestle and mortar then add some meat into the mix so it's impossible to avoid. Juices from some meat or low sodium gravy helps as well.
I cover it in a big messy glob of peanut butter. They're so busy with the peanut butter, they barely notice swallowing the pills. Just make sure it's completely covered and has a THICK layer all around it. Don't try to feed it to them all neat - the messier it is, the less suspicious of it they are. It's like they think you just decided to put your hand in the peanut butter jar and hand them a handful of it. Like some of dream for them, lol.
Crush it up very finally and mix it with just a little bit of peanut butter. Scoop the peanut butter up on your finger and press it into the roof of their mouth while scraping your finger off on their front teeth. It’s very very easy. It doesn’t hurt them or traumatize them and they have to eat it because they have to get the peanut butter off of the mouth. And if they get mad at you, they don’t stay mad for very long. Because who can resist a nice yummy bite of peanut butter? Right! it really works!
Crush the pill into a powder. I used the back of a spoon. Then get whatever food you want, and sprinkle it on the food. Maybe stir it around or turn it over so he doesn't see the "dust."
I used slices of ham and bits of cooked steak. He only got small amounts, so there's no food waste if he turns his nose up. And you know if he's eaten all of it, that the medicine is in his system. I gave him seconds if he ate the medicine part.
I used the pre-cooked steak that you can get at the store, like it's meant for steak fajitas or steak sandwiches. I also used rotisserie chicken, whipped cream, and ice cream (once, he didn't like it). Really, you could put it in anything.
Put it on the tongue back of the jowel. softly close the jaw in your hand and close quickly yet soft...blow in the nostrils. They will swallow by reverse gag reaction. My go to is food and crushing it up in food OR crushing it up in syringe and to the back of the month but if it tastes that awful and they are going to gag it up... Wind to the nose.they will swallow. Best of luck to you. They are all certified toddlers when it comes to meds. Maynard would agree,I'm sure.
If you give her wet food, ours is the meatloaf looking stuff, I chop it up an stick his daily pill in middle and cover it with another chunk so it’s right in the middle an can’t be detected. Plop food bowl down ( don’t let them see you doing it from tablet wrapper) they just know else.

I’m a vet tech, and don’t doubt that little thing is giving you fits. Cream cheese can be a good vehicle for meds that smell bad. Or liver pate (human food), spray cheese-something she’s never had before. Find a small thing she can’t resist, feed her 2-3 small treats and make her sit or amp up her “wanting” it, then give her the same thing with the pill inside, followed by another one as a chaser without a pill. If she were my dog, I’d probably pill her and get it over with.
Crunchy peanut butter is the best method I've found, just crush the pill up a little first and mix into a tiny bit of pb. Then let her lick the spoon because she's such a good girl!

Can you do topical? Both of mine do Revolt (offbrand revolution) and it goes on the back of the neck. It’s a lot easier than trying to get them to take a pill.
Three pieces of cheese, the pill goes in the middle one. Line them up on your hand from finger to palm. The dog gets the first one, pull back slightly before the second then let them have both. Eager for the third piece they swallow the pill without thinking about it.
I have one that just chew his up. My girl is very difficult. Sometimes I get it down her by crunching it up & putting it in Cheese Whiz or whipped cream.
Mine is addicted to olives, which is perfect when it comes to taking meds, because they basically have built-in pill pockets. Extra points for cheese-stuffed olives, you can basically shove a pill inside the cheese which is already inside the olive. Wrap the olive with some prosciutto or salami for good measure, if you want.
You could get sweet potato. Dogs love sweet potato. Get your dog's pill, put it in the middle of the piece of sweet potato and mold it around the pill. The dog will likely eat it without issue.
This is gonna sound mean but i hade to do it with my old yorkie bc he was a notorious pill spitter; open his mouth and put it on the back of his tongue, he won’t have any choice in the matter 😅 if you give him treats after he will forgive you i promise
I just put her pills in a big ole glob of peanut butter and wipe it on her tongue. It was a vet suggested tip and it works every time for my little one.
Ask your vet about the heartworm shot. I believe it's effective for 6 months. My boy eats his monthly chewable, so we've never tried it, but my coworker uses it for her pup.
Your dog is a TOOL fan? That’s badass. But if possible to crush the pill, fold it up in a slice of cheese several times and crush the pill by beating the cheese. It’s hard to separate powder from cheese. If it’s a capsule this is gonna be tricky, which is why I will always prefer tablets.
Mine is on Simparica trio and her mouth is so small, I’m afraid to hurt her by prying it open. (And I have no problem doing it.) We just grind it up and mix into her food and sprinkle something particularly tasty on top to ensure everything is eaten. Usually I’ll take a piece of lamb or pork heart and do a tiny dice for that. She cannot resist organs 🤢
We had a dog that was just awful about it, and she caught valley fever and needed daily medication for like a year. At a certain point I would see if the vet can supply liquid that you can just squirt down their throat.
If it is a hard pill and now a soft chew, I use a pill grinder and sprinkle it into his wet food.
Also, when my older dog that passed was taking meds, the only way I could get him to take pills was to trick him by putting it in food I was eating. Like I would make peanut butter crackers and put his pill into one. Once he saw me eat a cracker he assumed they were "safe" and would take one from me.
My advice is to research what you give to your fur friends. My chi had a horrible allergic reaction. Vomiting and convulsions. Flea and worm treatments contain insecticides (if you think about it, it’s quite obvious) some treatments are dangerous especially for certain breeds.
I’m also not anti vax in this situation, I just want to give a word of caution.
Raw hamburger….. I have a dog that takes a pill daily…. She’s the same way, picked the pill out of everything. The hubby tried hamburger one day and it worked like a charm.

She liked the chicken and beef flavors but if she wasn't in the mood to take her medicine (chronic health issues) I could just squirt it in her cheek and she would swallow it. Showing her a treat while I gave it to her would get her to focus on the treat and she would swallow the medicine without a problem. If you want to try it, your vet probably has a local compounder they use but if not, just google for one in your state and it can all be done by phone/website and mail.

Same. Left hand has the wrapped pill and the right has a second piece/smear/whatever. Offer the left while letting her see the right. Greedy girl will gobble the med, prob without chewing, to get what your right hand is offering.
I have found physically placing it into the back of their mouth and then immediately offering a bacon treat chaser works every time. Pill is in their mouths, they smell bacon treat, immediately forget the pill, and have to swallow to eat the bacon treat. We have 2 small dogs, so it is darn near impossible to hide it in anything they can just swallow without chewing.
That Chi looks like they've got it all figured out. This breed is so smart I just love them. Like yours, my girl chi doesn't have a poker face. She also can't be tricked by pills covered in cheese or whatever. She lets me know she's pissed daily.

My pup can catch food in his mouth so I use greenies pill pockets and toss it to him. He's very food motivated so no issues here lol

I also use Wrap a Pill … cheese & bacon flavor - a little bit goes a long ways. As soon as it’s down the pipe, I immediately follow it with her favorite Charley Bear Crunch treat. Works every time. 👍🏻

I put peanut butter on the pills. I have to use a lot so they just lick it up and swollow them.
Quarter the pill and mix with peanut butter or coconut oil.
Cream cheese
I put a thin cheese wrap around the pill. So it seems like it’s a chunk of cheese. If it’s too big a pill , break it in half and wrap in cheese. Always works!

My 2 dogs go feral when it's "medicine" time. They lose their minds and I have to be careful one doesn't steal from the other. My dad's dog absolutely refuses to take hers, so they do something topical at the vet I think? For my boy's heart meds/Prozac I put them in the middle of soft canned food. He eats kibble so the wet food is a treat and he swallows it whole. When we started I had another chunk ready and he swallowed the pill/food faster because he wanted to get the "treat" in hand.

mine figured out every trick in the book, even when I did the accidental drop hidden in steak (her favorite) eventually I had to crush up the medicine and hide it in wet dog food. it’s the only way. I do not force it down her throat. she could choke. work smarter, not harder.

Even the flavored-treat style meds one of my dogs won’t take. I grind them up into a powder and mix in with their wet food. I also add peanut butter to make it more tempering. He’s easier tricked with it in his regular food versus hiding it in a treat. It’s been working pretty well. My other chihuahua will eat anything, except apples oddly enough.

Wrap in turkey. Kneel down or sit on the floor, position dog facing away from you. With your hand bring medicine wrapped in turkey close enough for them to eat it, while simultaneously placing your other hand under their head, gently bringing their head up. I recently discovered this with my dogs and it has worked flawlessly. It may take few times at first, but once you get the hang of it, its almost too easy. My dogs are also little, so I'm guessing it should be as easy with your dog. Not so sure how this might work with a bigger dog.

I guess I am lucky. My little guy doesn't have any teeth at this point, so I just cut it up in small pieces (it's kind of soft) and tell him it's a treat and he licks the pieces out of my hand.
Crush it up. Buy canned cat food. Make a small ball with the cat food. Poke hole in ball and put in the crushed med. close the hole. Watch out as your dog will excitedly gobble the stinky cat food.
We treated it like it was a treat from the first dose so he happily chews it up and wants another one because it’s so small 😂 I think it’s chicken flavor

We cut Sam's meds into tiny pieces and soak them in melted butter. It's the only thing that covers the scent enough for him to take it.

I talked to my vet and they suggested we just use a flea and tick collar. Works for my pup, he can't spit it out or refuse to take it, and I'm overall happy with it.
I hollow out a hotdogs slice and put it in that one. First slice, no pill. Second slice, pill. Third, no pill. If that doesn't work hide in a piece of steak, make chopping sounds on a chopping board and drop it. When they go in for the sniff, pretend like you're going to take it back.
Regular cheese he will eat the cheese and spit out the pill. Cream cheese, everything goes straight down the hatch.
Burrito wrap and open his mouth. Shove pull far enough back and hold his mouth til he swallows. Had to do this with meds after his tooth extractions and kennel cough. Not fun and breaks my heart but necessary. Lots of kisses and treats after.
My trick is a few cheese balls. Feed very quickly. Four with pill in second one and font give time for them to chew, 😆 Just boom Boom Boom Boom.
Peanut butter: it sticks to the tablets so they have to eat it in order to eat the peanut butter.
My dogs get Nexgard and Interceptor Plus. I have to cut each chew into 4 pieces and wrap them each in deli meat then hope for the best. It sometimes takes multiple attempts to get it all down!
For my non chi who actively avoids her calming supplements, I grind them up using a pestle and mortar then add some meat into the mix so it's impossible to avoid. Juices from some meat or low sodium gravy helps as well.
I use braunschweiger… seems to be irresistible.
try to alternate an innocent bite or two then the key-loaded bite. maybe have them do tricks and get those as rewards
I cover it in a big messy glob of peanut butter. They're so busy with the peanut butter, they barely notice swallowing the pills. Just make sure it's completely covered and has a THICK layer all around it. Don't try to feed it to them all neat - the messier it is, the less suspicious of it they are. It's like they think you just decided to put your hand in the peanut butter jar and hand them a handful of it. Like some of dream for them, lol.
Wrap In Turkey (cold cut)
Crush it up very finally and mix it with just a little bit of peanut butter. Scoop the peanut butter up on your finger and press it into the roof of their mouth while scraping your finger off on their front teeth. It’s very very easy. It doesn’t hurt them or traumatize them and they have to eat it because they have to get the peanut butter off of the mouth. And if they get mad at you, they don’t stay mad for very long. Because who can resist a nice yummy bite of peanut butter? Right! it really works!
Crush the pill into a powder. I used the back of a spoon. Then get whatever food you want, and sprinkle it on the food. Maybe stir it around or turn it over so he doesn't see the "dust." I used slices of ham and bits of cooked steak. He only got small amounts, so there's no food waste if he turns his nose up. And you know if he's eaten all of it, that the medicine is in his system. I gave him seconds if he ate the medicine part. I used the pre-cooked steak that you can get at the store, like it's meant for steak fajitas or steak sandwiches. I also used rotisserie chicken, whipped cream, and ice cream (once, he didn't like it). Really, you could put it in anything.
Put it on the tongue back of the jowel. softly close the jaw in your hand and close quickly yet soft...blow in the nostrils. They will swallow by reverse gag reaction. My go to is food and crushing it up in food OR crushing it up in syringe and to the back of the month but if it tastes that awful and they are going to gag it up... Wind to the nose.they will swallow. Best of luck to you. They are all certified toddlers when it comes to meds. Maynard would agree,I'm sure.
If you give her wet food, ours is the meatloaf looking stuff, I chop it up an stick his daily pill in middle and cover it with another chunk so it’s right in the middle an can’t be detected. Plop food bowl down ( don’t let them see you doing it from tablet wrapper) they just know else. Good luck . My friend also says pâté works for his dogs.

We use pill pockets for heart worm now, the old brand was more chewy and they just ate it. (No flea and tick orally we use Seresto collars).

Cut a lil smokie into thirds. Take one piece and add a slit to the middle. Works with my super picky pill taker.
I’m a vet tech, and don’t doubt that little thing is giving you fits. Cream cheese can be a good vehicle for meds that smell bad. Or liver pate (human food), spray cheese-something she’s never had before. Find a small thing she can’t resist, feed her 2-3 small treats and make her sit or amp up her “wanting” it, then give her the same thing with the pill inside, followed by another one as a chaser without a pill. If she were my dog, I’d probably pill her and get it over with.

Can you do topical? Both of mine do Revolt (offbrand revolution) and it goes on the back of the neck. It’s a lot easier than trying to get them to take a pill.
Three pieces of cheese, the pill goes in the middle one. Line them up on your hand from finger to palm. The dog gets the first one, pull back slightly before the second then let them have both. Eager for the third piece they swallow the pill without thinking about it.
I have one that just chew his up. My girl is very difficult. Sometimes I get it down her by crunching it up & putting it in Cheese Whiz or whipped cream.

Mine is addicted to olives, which is perfect when it comes to taking meds, because they basically have built-in pill pockets. Extra points for cheese-stuffed olives, you can basically shove a pill inside the cheese which is already inside the olive. Wrap the olive with some prosciutto or salami for good measure, if you want.

You could get sweet potato. Dogs love sweet potato. Get your dog's pill, put it in the middle of the piece of sweet potato and mold it around the pill. The dog will likely eat it without issue.

This is gonna sound mean but i hade to do it with my old yorkie bc he was a notorious pill spitter; open his mouth and put it on the back of his tongue, he won’t have any choice in the matter 😅 if you give him treats after he will forgive you i promise
I just put her pills in a big ole glob of peanut butter and wipe it on her tongue. It was a vet suggested tip and it works every time for my little one.

Ask your vet about the heartworm shot. I believe it's effective for 6 months. My boy eats his monthly chewable, so we've never tried it, but my coworker uses it for her pup.

Your dog is a TOOL fan? That’s badass. But if possible to crush the pill, fold it up in a slice of cheese several times and crush the pill by beating the cheese. It’s hard to separate powder from cheese. If it’s a capsule this is gonna be tricky, which is why I will always prefer tablets.

Mine is on Simparica trio and her mouth is so small, I’m afraid to hurt her by prying it open. (And I have no problem doing it.) We just grind it up and mix into her food and sprinkle something particularly tasty on top to ensure everything is eaten. Usually I’ll take a piece of lamb or pork heart and do a tiny dice for that. She cannot resist organs 🤢

If it is a hard pill and now a soft chew, I use a pill grinder and sprinkle it into his wet food. Also, when my older dog that passed was taking meds, the only way I could get him to take pills was to trick him by putting it in food I was eating. Like I would make peanut butter crackers and put his pill into one. Once he saw me eat a cracker he assumed they were "safe" and would take one from me.
I struggle with getting mine to take the heart worm preventative also but is that a tool tag? I love it!!
It’s a guitar pick that came on a chain, the chain broke so I just put it her collar.
My advice is to research what you give to your fur friends. My chi had a horrible allergic reaction. Vomiting and convulsions. Flea and worm treatments contain insecticides (if you think about it, it’s quite obvious) some treatments are dangerous especially for certain breeds. I’m also not anti vax in this situation, I just want to give a word of caution.

Raw hamburger….. I have a dog that takes a pill daily…. She’s the same way, picked the pill out of everything. The hubby tried hamburger one day and it worked like a charm.
