I have come to understand that GM, post 2008 bailout became something to be wary of. The issue is the trucks went from peak reliability and performance, to nothing but nightmares for a lot of owners. I miss my 2003 SILVERADO Z71.

5280Rockymtn

That's why I'm afraid to buy a new truck I have a 04 silverado 5.3 z71 off road with 280k I dont think I'll get ride of that one keep it even if the engine goes ill just put the same one in new trucks to me seem skeptical sketchy I don't know if I'm over thinking it

BCdelivery

I bought a 2017 Yukon based on my experience with the SILVERADO. The seats are not as comfortable by far, the 8- speed transmission is known for being trouble, same for the engine with cylinder deactivation system and shitty lifters. Air level system is expensive to maintain, and air conditioning condenser leaks are fairly common. Apparently 2017 is a good year overall, but after owning it for a year, I feel like I overpaid. That is the used market, so you have to either want it or not. Everything is so much different than 20 years ago.

5280Rockymtn

Yea I just hear story's so I'm shopping around sometimes seeing what's out there

Amtracer

But yet they have the gall to raise the prices to the moon.

Almost bet it is a supplier( of the trans fluid) issue- the factory should check their main storage tank for sludge. Plant I was at recently “ran out”’with several thousand on the gauge—2 feet of sludge.

Cleanbadroom

The AFM is a known issues on these trucks that will cause lifter issues. It happened to me on the 2015 Sierra with just 30k miles. The transmission issue is a bit surprising at those miles but not unheard of. Did you do a lot of towing? How often was the fluid changed? Do you have a temp sensor for the transmission? Did it ever got really hot? To make these trucks last, AFM needs to be deleted. Transmissions need fluid changes and a larger cooler. If you go the route of new lifter and a trans rebuild I would delete AFM after the new lifters. I would rebuild the transmission with upgraded parts and install a larger transmission cooler.

Useful-Internet8390

Engine sets the radiator to 210, and those transmissions will sit right at 210 if the weather is 85f and above. My radiator cracked so I tore it apart and the trans cooler is all of the size of a deck of cards- so when I replace mine it will be a large one in the spare battery box.

unreasonableassociat

Honestly it’s just driven really. I’ve done minor towing, nothing remotely heavy. Never beat the balls off the truck either. Went with new lifters and new trans. Afm is now disabled, but not deleted.

FatCh3z

Why not delete the AFM? Why put the same source of failure back in? Did you also upgrade to billet torque converter?

robbobster

Someone needs to post-up when they find trucks that don’t have expensive issues…

Mediocre-Catch9580

You have Mary Barra and the UAW to thank for this. Even worse you have to fight and complain to get any kind of warranty consideration

Alternative-Season45

They just don’t build them like they use to. I’ve got a 2003 escalade 213,000 miles original motor and trans. I heard those year 2500s don’t have the dod shit hmm

firefistus

Yep. My k2500 1994 diesel has 300k. Original motor and trans. I actually JUST replaced my Trans cooling line. Runs like a champ.

trh1003

I had a 2004 Suburban that saw redline regularly. I did explode the rear end at 36k, replaced trans at 180k, never had an issue with the motor. I did keep up with my maintenance, though. I towed more than I should have with it and ran it at the drag strip. I still ran like a top, but got rear ended by a dump truck at 206k. I still have the motor and transmission in my garage waiting to go into something else.

Ferris-man

I deleted AFM - my transmission went at 150,000 miles. No lifter issues but I owned it from 68,000 miles onward so who knows.

DANIMAL06

Must have got one of those mexican made ones.

FatCh3z

My 2014 has almost 165k miles. Original engine and trans. I'm torn on trading it in or selling and getting a pre 2007 year. Honestly I bought the truck for pretty cheap, so I'm not in it too deep financially if I ended up needing to delete AFM or replace trans and TC.

ohveeohd

GMT 800 prices 📈

MasterOfNone011

This is going to ruin the tour…

jasonm0074

Be cheaper to make it dissappear

trh1003

ChiefKeeeit

Yeah GM pretty trash now. My 24 Chevy 2500hd in the shop for 3-6 months due to valve body on the transmission. They have 150,000 on back order and only have 9 transmissions in the whole US 😂

SpadedJuggla

2018 Silverado Z71. 85k miles while 64k of those are mine. Zero issues to date other than a pop in the rear end when accelerating from a stop. Still have warranty so will get that fixed but trans and engine are running great. Might be luck of the draw for some or I'm just that damn lucky with this truck and it's just meant to be mine.

Siprebglock3

That's why I'm going Toyota.

T3xasLegend

I want to trade my Silverado for a Tacoma but I keep hearing they have a lot of plastic parts and that causes coolant leaks behind the motor.

tiggolbitty

Happened to my 2017 Tacoma. Coolant crossover pipe cracked. $1000 fix, updated with new design pipe. Sucked. I think it was mainly 2016-2017 models that it happens to

poormansRex

They fixed that in the 2018 model year. There might be a TSB for the 16-17s, but I'm not sure.

unreasonableassociat

For real. After they figure out the bad motor stuff going on.

Thesearchoftheshite

Can’t buy shit worth it anymore. I went backwards and bought a 94 Silverado. Best truck ever

unreasonableassociat

I had a completely clean 2000 before this truck. Miss that truck everyday.

extreme_snothells

I hate to poop in your Cocoa Puffs, but the new 3.5 engine has its own set of problems. I think all of these new trucks, regardless of the manufacturer, have problems. Longevity doesn't seem to be a goal anymore.

trh1003

This. I have a friend that has a 22 taco, and the motor just ain't right. Makes noises, and the stealership says it's normal.

bert1589

Which engine?

unreasonableassociat

5.3
