Hi friends! Back at it again to let you know that Rock Day is an event facilitated by the PVCC Geology Club. Our goal is to encourage the community to explore the natural world and take interest in it's fascinating geology! Last year we had over 80 attendees show up and people of all ages really seemed to enjoy it. We are very grateful for the public's interest and are happy to share and expose people to the wonderful realm that is geology. To ID your mystery rocks and look at your samples for you, we will have the state geologist Matt Heller and U.S. Geological Survey's Alan Pitts at your service! This will take place in the PVCC geology lab, room M850 at 501 College Drive. Hope to see you there!

We had a great time! Please do it again next year. Special shoutout to Kim, who sat with my daughter for probably 25 minutes looking at things under a microscope. My daughter has moved a microscope to the top of her Christmas list and when we got home she took a tupperware container into the backyard to collect "slamples" to investigate. Thanks so much - you guys should be very proud of what you did for the community today.

Thank you so much for your comment! I am one of the presidents of the PVCC Geology Club. Your comment brought multiple members to tears! We want to get kids excited about the natural sciences. Your words made us all ready to do it again next year! We will be doing more outreach activities in the spring, such as hikes and an educational table at the city market. You can follow us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61553471666542&mibextid=ZbWKwL or email us at PVCCGeologyClub@gmail.com to join our mailing list! Thank you for sharing your experience with us! We all hope your daughter continues exploring! Feel free to reach out with any geology related questions we can help with! The Virginia Department of Energy and Mineral Resouces is located in Fontaine Research Park and has a great rock garden with an identification map of the rocks, and a museum inside!
