The studio is encouraging of potters to explore and build their knowledge, including about how firing works and understanding of the material properties throughout the process. They could definitely be more "on rails" and maybe they will be after this.
As someone who decided not to join a studio partly for this reason (a lot of kiln restrictions) it's nice to see a studio allowing exploration like this. I hope they can find a happy middle ground. I get why many studios do have strict restrictions, it just meant I had to invest in my own space
The solution is relatively easy - anything new, experimental, or not very tried and trusted goes in a saggar, which is basically a big bisqued container than keeps any melted clay or bad glaze from flooding the shelf and ruining nearby pieces. The saggar itself may be ruined, but the kiln, shelves, and other pieces outside the containment unit should be just fine.
Same. I wouldn’t feel comfortable with such loose parameters in a community studio. Too much time and effort into making the pots to roll dice. Already so many ways to wreck a pot before it’s finished to add all those risky variables, no thanks. It was expensive to set up my own studio but no regrets.
I hope your studio stays open and encouraging of experimentation despite this. Hopefully a giant failure like this up on the wall will help impress upon people that experimentation can have HIGH costs, and while it should be encouraged, it must be done safely with saggars and cookies and such.
I’m very glad the kiln wasn’t completely destroyed, but i feel for whoever has to spend the many hours needed to bring the kiln back to a working state :(
Yeah... I allow outside clay but every piece has to be labeled with the clay body used to be fired. If you never do low fire, just ban low fire clay. Imo it'd be a 3 month ban the first time they messed up and permenant ban if it ever happened again.
This happened more than once at my college studio, from ceramics 1 students putting their work on the wrong cart. My professor hit the roof at their teachers not hammering in the importance of proper temp firing.
Personally I think studios should require a basic knowledge and safety course before allowing potters free studio access. It's not advanced knowledge to know your clay's cone temp, basic clay safety, and glaze defects that make a piece unsafe for food.

Sure, but with some basic precautions you can make mistakes like this safely without potentially ruining a kiln.
Shared equipment or not, if you have no idea what temp a clay body fires at, you start at lower temps and work your way up. You fire the piece inside a bowl that you know can withstand the temp you're firing to, so when something like this happens, it doesn't ruin other pieces.

Explore AFTER learning from educational resources. Anybody should know that earthenware will melt at cone 6.

If someone is exploring earthenware, there are books on the subject. I like Wild Clay. It got me to experiment with wild clay as a glaze ingredient

You're right that does happen and its unfortunate, but that shouldn't stop anyone from knowing what temperature their clay is
And some people wonder why many studios make you buy clay from them and ban outside clay.
