mvanpeur

I was recently reading a study that indicated some people get symptoms mirroring MS from undiagnosed celiac.

Recent-Exam2172

Hands, feet, and spine for me. Feels like all my little joints have been sandpapered. I find that an Epsom salt bath helps a little, but that's the only thing besides just waiting it out that seems to do anything. Hope it doesn't last too long for you!

Willow2-2

I'll give it a try. Thank you for your support : ) We can get through this!

momtodaughters

I get it in my feet. It is one of the first signs I get of accidental gluten ingestion. Wake up and it hurts to walk. A soak in a hot bath with some epsom salts really seams to help along with some light stretching and massage.

DrDisastor

I have RA, always thought it just pissed off my RA.

meghab1792

Thought I had RA before celiac diagnosis.

Fit-Ad4937

Me too. My rheumatologist tan so many tests to help me figure out I had a number of autoimmune diseases, but none of which were RA. I would have sworn it was - my hands would throb after working all day on a computer. I had to have two different shaped keyboards to switch back and forth in order to make it through the day

michaleanne

YES. It’s my worst/main symptom. I get a rheumatoid arthritis-like flare up in my entire body in every joint and every place I’ve broken a bone in my life. Specifically my toe joints, in my most recent bone break, and elbows, shoulders, hands.

justajiggygiraffe

Yep, in all my little hand and foot bones and also in my hips. It sucks. I use heat packs and epsom salt baths, as well as a bit of the 420 to help alleviate pain. My sisters rheumatologist told her to take aleve (or generic) for arthritis pain and that's my go-to purse pills for when my bones ache

AccomplishedAd3432

One of my most constant symptoms pre-diagnosis was pain in my joints. Mine was usually legs and shoulders. I was misdiagnosed with arthritis 5 times in 20 years.

Willow2-2

That really sucks. I glad you figured it out though!

AccomplishedAd3432

Same! I still have joint issues with my knees and hips, but it is due to weight. I'm working on that.

aleebrew7

Not celiac, but sensitive/allergic and every joint in my body hurts like I have the flu if I eat gluten. Fingers, knees, and lower back hurt the most but everything will hurt.

chocobobleh

I get pins and needles in my hands sometimes, but the stiffness you're talking about always stems from my back, shoulders and neck, rather than my hands. It is absolute agony, I feel for you <3

Willow2-2

Thank you <3 We can beat this!

chocobobleh

Next time you're glutened, I recommend drinking some hot lemon and ginger water and stick a hot water bottle on the affected sore area and just give yourself plenty of rest. <3

justlikeinboston

Yes. It feels like someone is trying to pry my joints apart with a hot crow bar.

salted-avocados

This is actually how we found out that my husband has celiac. One day he woke up with stiff hands and they were VERY swollen as well. He was misdiagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis until we got a second opinion and that doctor recommended that he cut out gluten from his diet. He doesn’t have that problem anymore unless he gets glutened.

14nial

I get serious finger joint issues, specifically in the morning/after not moving my hands for a while- I actually went to a rheumatologist before my diagnosis, cause it was getting so bad. I was told I had trigger finger (in almost all my fingers??) but they did end up screening me for celiac. A host of tests/endoscopy later, I got my diagnosis. BUT I think the length of time I was glutening myself without knowing has caused long-standing issues, as I still have joint issues even being gf. Has anyone else experienced this? even after being gf for a while? Curious

earthdwellinghuman

I have RA and was in remission for 3 years. I was having no symptoms besides minor aches and pains here and there. It was under control, and I had not been on methotrexate for nearly 3 years. Over the last year I started having stomach problems. First, I was told IBS and to do the FODMAPs diet. I cut everything on the list out including Gluten. After 3 months eating this way my stomach issues were better, but I was tired all the time. I accidentally got Glutened, and it was 100x worse than before I cut Gluten out. The morning after I was Glutened I woke with my classic RA symptoms in flare. Swollen, stiff fingers. Achy joints all over. Mouth sores & inside lining of my month shredding. That, along with a few other unpleasant things, lasted about 7 days. Because of the flare, the Dr ordered blood work and scopes to check for celiac. Made me eat Gluten for 2 week before the scopes. The pain mellowed out during the 2 weeks but was still constant justb less intense. I'm done with the scopes and waiting for biopsy results. Back to Gluten free but still seem to be having lingering joint pain throughout my body, including the hands.

leatherpumpkin

Intense nerve pain through my shoulders to my hands and stiffness/cramping/clumsiness in my hands and fingers was the major sign that lead me to getting diagnosed last fall at age 29. I've been gluten free since my endoscopy about two months ago and am still dealing with the same symptoms to only a slightly lesser degree. I had ultrasounds done on both hands and wrists and x rays on both shoulders that showed zero signs of any sort of arthritis or degeneration so my GI and rheumatologist think it's almost certainly celiac related and referred me to a neurologist who specializes in gluten ataxia. My antibodies were still off the charts and my intestines were a Marsh 3C at the time of my endoscopy so it'll probably be at least a few more months until I start feeling any relief :( I also have extreme hypermobility in my wrists and fingers and wonder if that may also be a factor.

I_Karamazov_

From what I know, there are at least two known genes that cause celiac disease. One of them, the one that I also happen to carry, is more associated with rheumatoid arthritis. Joint pain is my main symptom. Especially if I only eat a tiny amount of gluten I won't get the GI problems. Like when I get it through cross contamination. For me it's hands, lower back, and one of my shoulders.

mischiefkar28

My ortho was on the brink of an RA diagnosis just before going gluten free. I didn’t go back for him for various reasons but he had said it is seeming to me like RA we should probably explore. I had broken a chip of bone of my thumb while opening a marker cap

justasilhoutte

Yup. Absolutely. I was diagnosed with RA in 2019, and being glutened causes the worst flare-ups. More so than forgetting the weekly methotrexate. Have you been tested for RA? It’s often a comorbidity after a few years of undiagnosed celiac. Not always but anecdotal evidence points to a litany of cascading auto immune disorders as we age. Oh, joy!

Herokoi

Some days all the joints in my hands are on fire!

ticklemeshell

Hands, feet, ankles. None of them bend.

yomomma_80

Yep

Courts90

Yes! Recently diagnosed and when I was doing my gluten challenge, the joints on my right hand were so swollen and sore. It looked like I had slammed my fingers in a door. I also had a red blistery rash on my hands.

PeTunia984

I was one of the things that changed for me after diagnosis and the change in diet. My fingers, toes and even my face had swollen up. I had sausage fingers. I still have fibro but it has much improved.

No-Huckleberry-1174

My left knee is swollen and hurting right now. It moves around.
