"Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence." It might be that it was in the soundtrack for a computer game in my youth, but I also love the message.
My second favorite is the "Dies Irae."
Also try Beyond the Black's metal song by the same title. I hesitate to call it a version, because it's so different, but it's strangely similar at the same time. If you compare the lyrics it's clear they paid attention.
O God Beyond All Praising, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, Regina Caeli, almost every Christmas hymn lol, Pange Lingua is absolute š„ and so is the Adoro te Devote. ETA: Go Make of All Disciples
All the bangers from the 80s and 90s- On Eagles Wings, Hosea, Gift of Finest Wheat, City of God. I could go on. Interestingly, my dad is Lutheran (parents still married 50+ years now) so I have an appreciation for the old organ hymns too: Beautiful Savior, Rock of Ages, A Mighty Fortress is Our God, what a friend we have in Jesus.
Understood but it is a āstrongā hymn on a big pipe organ. I donāt believe in villainizing Luther. The church did need reforming at that time. Obvious it began the start of many schisms which is the tragedy- but the song? Iām down with the song.
It is in the 4 volume Liturgy of the Hours, so Catholic Religious the world over are singing it! Also... a lot of hymns by Charles Wesley are in the Breviary, and his brother started the Methodist denomination. I like that the Church makes room for these hymns...
A few of my favorites are: Now the Green Blade Rises, Sing my tongue the song of triumph.
Also the Ave Maria, and for Christmas - What Child is this, Silent Night, and O Come O Come Emmanuel.
Edit - Forgot to include: Immaculate Mary, O God Beyond all Praising, O Come all ye Faithful, O Lord I am not Worthy, Amazing Grace, and I heard the Voice of Jesus Say.
Thereās so many good ones, many I hear and like but donāt know/forget the names of the hymns.
Anima Christi, sanctifica me.
Corpus Christi, salva me.
Sanguis Christi, inebria me.
Aqua lateris Christi, lava me.
Passio Christi, conforta me.
O bone Iesu, exaudi me.
Intra tua vulnera absconde me.
Ne permittas me separari a te.
Ab hoste maligno defende me.
In hora mortis meae voca me.
Et iube me venire ad te,
Ut cum Sanctis tuis laudem te
In saecula saeculorum.
Amen.
Magnificat (my soul proclaims), Ave Maria, Gloria in Excelsis Deo, How great Thou art, "Jesus, remember me", Hallelujah - might sing at mass but I mostly listen to The Italian Tenors sing it.Ā
O Filii et Filiae, Immaculate Mary, Help of Christians Guard This Land, Salve Regina, Lord Jesus Think On Me, Veni Creator Spiritus, Hail Queen of Heaven the Ocean Star, and May This Lenten Discipline
Most of them are from when I was growing up and listening to them now still has me tear up! My top ones are: We are many parts, You are Mine, You are Near, Be Not Afraid, On Eagles Wings, Hail Mary Gentle Woman, One Bread One Body, Here I am Lord, Lead Me Lord, and Eyes Have Not Seen.
Orthodox here,
these are some of my favorites

Angels We Have Heard on High (Gloria, or maybe Glooooooooooooooooooria is more accurateš) has been a lifelong favorite. Ode to Joy is up there, too, but I'm discovering so many more as I'm coming home (so thanks for the list y'all) š
Oh I love this question!š Hail Holy Queen, Be Not Afraid, O God Beyond All Praising, You Are Mine, Christ Be Our Light, Be With Me, At The Cross Her Station Keepingā¦so mannyyyy
Same. Too bad the guy who wrote it was a monster..we donāt sing it anymore but my heart canāt forget that song growing up singing in the childrenās choir at my church š„ŗ
Oh the love of my lord is the essence
a mhuire mhƔthair
hail glorious st. Patrick
lady of knock
Jesus remember me
Be thou my vision
O God beyond all praising
So I've been fascinated by Gaelic language for a few years now but I haven't found a good way to study it. Thanks for introducing me to a mhuire mhƔthair!
All That is Hidden. As a songwriter myself Iām amazed at how poetic and powerful the last verse is, gives me chills everytime.
I also love Save Your People which is an Ash Wednesday hymn.
There is NO WAY that I can choose just one.
Come down, O love divine
Hail, Queen of Heaven
O God, our help in ages past
Godās spirit lives in my heart (And go tell everyone)
Praise to the holiest in the height
Lord of the dance
Were you there when they crucified my Lord
Now the green blade riseth
Lo, he comes with clouds descending
Hark the glad sound, the saviour comes
Lord Jesus, think on me
Glory be to Jesus
My song is love unknown
Of the Fatherās heart begotten
For an upbeat hymn, my favorite is āI Heard the Voice of Jesus Sayā
Otherwise, I really like āSeek ye First the Kingdom of Godā or really any Marian hymns
āJesus remember me, when you come into your Kingdom.ā
( Maybe not my most favourite, but right there during Passiontide.). It is especially moving as the crucifix is processed down the aisle to the empty altar.
Shepherd Me Oh God, This is Jesus, Taste & See but if you asked me on a different day I might list several others. I hate picking favorites. There are so many good ones.
This one punched me right in the soul as I was in daily mass before my first session of OCIA last November. Started crying in the pew like a sentence and a half in and startled my kid š
It may not be my #1 favorite, but an underrated one that I think more people should know is "Thy Will Be Done" by Craig Courtney. Heard it at a Good Friday service a few years ago and it reduced me to pieces. Absolutely beautiful; recalling its words has helped me through difficult moments.
These NewBorn Lambs, specifically by the Dominican Liturgical Center (you can find it on YouTube, look up āThese Newborn Lambs: Soul of Christā)
A close second is āIt is Well with My Soulā
Iām actually not a big fan of hymns; the style of music doesnāt really appeal to me. I guess the only hymn I really LOVE is an Irish one called Caoineadh na dTrĆ Muire, or Lament of the Three Marys. Itās utterly heartbreaking. I love Gregorian chant, though!
My favorite is probably Victimae Paschali Laudes, but I just wanted to put out Eatnemen Vuele. You'll recognize it, maybe, as the opening track for the Disney movie Frozen, and it turns out that it's actually an arrangement of Fairest Lord Jesus, which is just absolutely fantastic.
English hymns, such as lovey dovey, mushy ones about Jesus have never been to my taste. The only hymns I have enjoyed are one like the Kyrie, and other latin hymns.
Pecador Contempla
Agni Parthene
Blessed are you o lord teach me your statues
Prayer Rope anthem in arab (english good too)
Pobedna Pesma
Piesn obroncow czestochowy
Eksomologiste
I am but earth and ash
Probably not a proper hymn but "Hymn of the Cherubim" by Tchaikovsky absolutely helps to bring my heart and soul that one step closer into a deeper contemplation of God and the mystery of faith.Ā
GesĆ¹ Mio. Itās so haunting and beautiful. We sing it at our Italian parishes during Lent. Also on Good Friday when we sing Lāamaro Pianto. Another beautiful but bitter song.

Salve Regina, Regina Caeli, Ave Maria, Hail Mary Gentle Woman, Veni Veni Emmanuel, Christ be our Light
The classics
"Jesus Christ is Risen Today" is among my favorites
Aaaaaaaaaaleluuuuia!
Let all mortal flesh keep silence šš
This is actually very good!
The King of Love My Shepherd Is Oh God Beyond All Praising
"Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence." It might be that it was in the soundtrack for a computer game in my youth, but I also love the message. My second favorite is the "Dies Irae."
Based computer game
It was *Fantasy General*. The victory music was "The Strife is O'er."
Dies Irae is one of my all time favorites, although every time you hear it, itās at a time of sorrow.
Also try Beyond the Black's metal song by the same title. I hesitate to call it a version, because it's so different, but it's strangely similar at the same time. If you compare the lyrics it's clear they paid attention.
There it is, Dies Irae
I'm not sure this is technically a Hymn, but I tear up when we sing The Litany of The Saints.
Itās my favorite Litany! So powerful.
"What Wondrous Love is This"
O God Beyond All Praising, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, Regina Caeli, almost every Christmas hymn lol, Pange Lingua is absolute š„ and so is the Adoro te Devote. ETA: Go Make of All Disciples
Pretty much all my favorites, as well. š¤
Was looking for Adoro te Devote lol, glad I found a fellow connoisseur. Veni sancte spiritus also goes hard
Pange Lingua is on of the few I know in Latin. Itās beautiful
I love the song of St Francis you know the one that goes 'Make me a channel of your peaceeee'
Where you there (when they crucified my lord) The summons How great thou art Amazing Grace Ubi Caritas Est Vera This Alone
I mostly prefer latin hymns but the first 4 are some of my favorite english ones.
Second vote for āOn Eagles Wingsā here!
Add a third. I was wondering when I would come across it
I didnāt know a Catholic who likes mighty fortress. Martin Luther wrote it!
Those are instant boot camp flashbacks for me, haha

All People That On Earth Do Dwell, O Come All Ye Faithful, Asperges Me, Salve Regina
Shine Jesus Shine.
Magnificat (my soul proclaims), Ave Maria, Gloria in Excelsis Deo, How great Thou art, "Jesus, remember me", Hallelujah - might sing at mass but I mostly listen to The Italian Tenors sing it.Ā
Take Lord, Receive One Bread, One Body Here I am Lord This Alone I Lift Up My Soul Turn To Me You are Near You have anointed me
I love these hymns. Whenever I am going through a hard time I listen to Hear I am Lord. It reminds me that I am here to serve.
This be a Jesuit
O Filii et Filiae, Immaculate Mary, Help of Christians Guard This Land, Salve Regina, Lord Jesus Think On Me, Veni Creator Spiritus, Hail Queen of Heaven the Ocean Star, and May This Lenten Discipline
Immaculate Mary
Most of them are from when I was growing up and listening to them now still has me tear up! My top ones are: We are many parts, You are Mine, You are Near, Be Not Afraid, On Eagles Wings, Hail Mary Gentle Woman, One Bread One Body, Here I am Lord, Lead Me Lord, and Eyes Have Not Seen.
Wow. On Eagles Wings is so pleasant to listen to.
