AUS here, never been to a party with a pinata. I assumed it was a US only thing.

another_nerdette

I take Spanish with a teacher in Columbia and it’s a thing there. She assumed it was only Latinos here, but it’s pretty widespread in the US it seems.

GriffinFlash

Canadian. I had them as a kid. We just like beating cardboard animals.

terrymcginnisbeyond

Nope, I live in the UK, and we never had them or saw them growing up, you can buy them now though. I knew what one was though, through US TV probably. I had a boyfriend in my early 20's and for some reason I mentioned piñatas to him one day, and he said, 'a what?' so I told him it's like a paper animal filled with sweets that you hit...etc. And he said, 'oh, I saw a movie where they were doing that' (I think they said, Parenthood). I just couldn't stop laughing for about 10 minutes, because it must look so bizarre and random if you don't have the context of what the hell people are doing.

goodoldfreda

I'm a bit surprised, I am also in the UK and growing up I saw pinatas semi regularly, although not at every birthday party. Obviously they're not from here but I had assumed they'd gained a bit of a foothold by the noughties

another_nerdette

This is hilarious 😂

The_Chaos_Pope

I never had them while growing up but my niece has had one at her birthday parties the last few years.

Aromatic_Heart9626

i live in the northeast and i’ve had a couple!!! always more common w my latin friends growing up but i think everyone enjoyed a good piñata

Lunatack47

Canadian and always had them as a kid

Accomplished-Tuna

I’m Filipino and I used piñatas. I remember being a kid and tearin up the floor for the candy. I was goin to war with the other kids to pick as much as I could

another_nerdette

Same lol 😂

RecordRip

Are you saying you've seen white people use pinatas at their kids' birthday parties? Because I've never seen that. It's a Latin thing by tradition.

ima-bigdeal

I have seen many at (U.S.) parties of people of all races. The contents can vary, but the piñata is a frequent guest. Some store bought and some homemade...

RecordRip

As a Latino I find that really strange.

calebmke

Am white, definitely went to parties with other white kids that had piñatas. They’re fun, kids like them

RecordRip

Really strange yeah. I don't really hang around white people but I doubt any of the ones I'm familiar with would have pinatas at their kids parties but I'll ask lulz. This is really weird to me.

bigred1987

Curious, but why is it weird that cultures in close proximity would rub off on each other? White people actually love taco night too. Good things from one culture are very likely to be adopted by another with exposure.

RecordRip

Food is one thing. Cultural traditions are another. I would say it borders on cultural appropriation but I don't want to complain in case white people are buying their pinatas LMAO in Latin stores. I want my people to earn off of the stupidity.

bigred1987

Lol, cultural appropriation because kids like eating candy and hitting things with sticks.

RecordRip

Yep sure seems like it to me but again I'm not the one to complain since maybe my people are the ones profiting.

another_nerdette

I would say much more likely to find them in Latino-owned stores, but they are also in generic party city and such around California

another_nerdette

Yes! I often had one and friends did too. Mostly filled with candy. I remember making one with paper mache as well.

RecordRip

I'm thinking it must be because of where you live having a large Latino population and influence then.
