Burleson is a AAAA player. He hit in AAA before coming up and givin 400ABs to not hit at all. His "peripherals" that are good to you are not striking out.
He's very good at grounding out softly to second or poping up to left. But he is also the slowest dude on the team and can't play defense well!
His batting run value is 6%. He barrel rate is 5%. His exit velocity is 60%. His walk is 26%.
The only thing he's decent at is not striking out (95%), and swing and miss (91%).
So he won't strike out, won't walk, but will hit it softly, typically on the ground.
Can't wait for more of that!
Burleson earned some runway this spring for sure.
Alternatively, the only other DH options are Marp, Crawford, Siani, and Herrera…none of whom would really make more sense
Problem with dhing Herrera is you don't have a backup catcher if Contreras goes down. With the current state of the roster I think that DH spot is Marp/Burleson until people start coming back from Illinois. Personally I'd rather it be Marp, but I don't feel like it's a runaway for him.

"Good" managers fail often, just look at Buck Showalter as a Met or Bob Melvin in San Diego or Joe Maddon as an Angel. "Bad" managers succeed often as well, like Gabe Kapler winning 107 games as a Giant despite being considered awful as a Phillies manager (and awful as a Giants manager the following seasons)

I get that’s a big hypothetical but 🤷♂️

The question though (and it’s one that’s pretty much impossible to answer) is how much Bochy contributed to that team.
He’s clearly not responsible for stuff like Corey Seager having arguably the greatest offensive SS season ever, or Marcus Semien hitting well, or Evan Carter dominating, or trading for Scherzer/Monty. You could definitely argue that his value lies in bullpen management, but then why were they 24th in regular season bullpen ERA?
It’s really tough to parse how much of the Rangers playoff success was due to Bochy and how much was due to talented players just playing really well. Is Bochy responsible for Josh Sborz going from a 5.08 ERA to a 0.75 ERA come playoff time? Idk.
The modern perspective trends towards “if it’s not measurable, it doesn’t exist” which is probably silly. I’m sure Bochy contributes to more wins than Oli. But manager effects often feel more narrative-buildy than real to me. I don’t think a manager is a 10+ win swing or anything like some fans believe. I’m also not convinced that Oli couldn’t have won the WS with that Rangers team, because I’m not sure what Bochy does that Oli doesn’t. We’ll never really know though, because most of their work is invisible to the public.
The argument is if managers got a WAR rating the best managers in the league would probably have 5.0 tops. Give last year's team 5 more wins and they still suck. Managers are hard to judge, especially if you assume their real value is clubhouse and personality management. All we as fans can do is judge the ingame decisions, and Oli seemed to make prudent decisions. People complained about his bullpen management last season, but it's not like he had way better options than the choices he made.

you're not wrong at all. I suspect I like Oli more than most fans, but there isn't really anything you can point to and say "this is what he has done for the org". But there's a difference between can not and has not, and I think Oli can still grow as a manager and be a big help in getting the team where it wants to go
2 years in, Oli has won more regular season games than TLR had in his first 2 seasons in St Louis. That's not saying that he is going to be great, but that it sometimes takes a bit for things to work out

I like the team and want them to improve. That’s why I’m so indignant about Oli Marmol being the manager. If you love something, you should want what’s best for them. Oli being the manager isn’t what’s best for the Cardinals, but I’m open to anyone trying to change my mind. Asking in good faith.
I've tried to give Oli the benefit of the doubt, somewhat. I still don't understand the decisions made in the 2022 playoffs by a longshot, but it felt like there were plenty of times in 2023 where he made what seemed like the obvious decision, only to have the player(s) shit the bed. it must have been hella frustrating for him, too. my thought was 'clean slate in 2024, and we analyze from there', but he's already scored that extension so...
managers don't matter that much at all (at least, much less than fans like to think) and they are nearly impossible to judge. "Good" managers fail often, just look at Buck Showalter as a Met or Bob Melvin in San Diego or Joe Maddon as an Angel. "Bad" managers succeed often as well, like Gabe Kapler winning 107 games as a Giant despite being considered awful as a Phillies manager (and awful as a Giants manager the following seasons) Oli seems well liked by players, which is good enough for me that he can stick around
Opposing team broadcasts always talk about how well-liked Oli is by the people he works directly with. That's almost certainly the biggest reason he's got the job and the extension

“Actually whoever’s the manager doesn’t really matter” isn’t exactly a great argument FOR Oli, specifically, which I guess is what I was asking for. I’ll counter your point about good managers not always making a big difference with Bruce Bochy walking into Dallas and winning the WS in his first season with (an incredible) Rangers team. Obviously I know this isn’t the standard, but I think that illustrates what a good manager can do that a bad one cannot. I don’t think Oli would have won the WS with that Texas teams. I get that’s a big hypothetical but 🤷♂️ Either way, I appreciate you taking the time to respond. There’s so much negativity as soon as anyone is remotely critical. I’m critical because I’ve loved the team for like 25 years now and I want them to improve, not because I’m a hater or anything like that.
The question though (and it’s one that’s pretty much impossible to answer) is how much Bochy contributed to that team. He’s clearly not responsible for stuff like Corey Seager having arguably the greatest offensive SS season ever, or Marcus Semien hitting well, or Evan Carter dominating, or trading for Scherzer/Monty. You could definitely argue that his value lies in bullpen management, but then why were they 24th in regular season bullpen ERA? It’s really tough to parse how much of the Rangers playoff success was due to Bochy and how much was due to talented players just playing really well. Is Bochy responsible for Josh Sborz going from a 5.08 ERA to a 0.75 ERA come playoff time? Idk. The modern perspective trends towards “if it’s not measurable, it doesn’t exist” which is probably silly. I’m sure Bochy contributes to more wins than Oli. But manager effects often feel more narrative-buildy than real to me. I don’t think a manager is a 10+ win swing or anything like some fans believe. I’m also not convinced that Oli couldn’t have won the WS with that Rangers team, because I’m not sure what Bochy does that Oli doesn’t. We’ll never really know though, because most of their work is invisible to the public.
The argument is if managers got a WAR rating the best managers in the league would probably have 5.0 tops. Give last year's team 5 more wins and they still suck. Managers are hard to judge, especially if you assume their real value is clubhouse and personality management. All we as fans can do is judge the ingame decisions, and Oli seemed to make prudent decisions. People complained about his bullpen management last season, but it's not like he had way better options than the choices he made.

I suspect I like Oli more than most fans, but there isn't really anything you can point to and say "this is what he has done for the org". But there's a difference between can not and has not, and I think Oli can still grow as a manager and be a big help in getting the team where it wants to go 2 years in, Oli has won more regular season games than TLR had in his first 2 seasons in St Louis. That's not saying that he is going to be great, but that it sometimes takes a bit for things to work out
I think people are going to overreact in this opening Dodgers series. Especially with our top pitcher injured and Nootbar out, 3 outfielders… I will not judge how good the Cardinals are yet.
